The trend for prolonged rear-facing car seats for children up to aged 4 is gaining momemtum in the U.K., and there are plenty of reasons that you might wish to continue to rear-face your child after they outgrown their Stage 0+ baby carrier. In my personal experience, I have come across some militant and bullying online Parent & Baby Groups who will tell you that you are a bad parent if you don’t rear-face till 4 years old. Personally, I have experience of such online ‘support’ groups calling me evil and uncaring for forward facing my son from 15 months. What I will say is this. Every parent has the right to choose for themselves. If you feel that prolonged rear-facing is what you want to do,and your budget will stretch, then great. If you aren’t sure, or can’t afford to rear-face, just remember this. You are not a bad parent for forward facing. Your decision. No one else’s, especially not any online groups bullying you and trying to tell you what to do.Ordinarily, as I mentioned above, my son forward faces in a seat with an impact cushion. However, he has also been using this lovely seat when we travel in my husbands car, and surprisingly, he has not minded being rear-facing as long as he has the iPad to watch, mounted on the rear headrests in a holder. Without sometime to look at, rear-facing could get very boring for the child very quickly. This seat from Maxi-Cosi is one of the leading designs, in terms of style, build quality and impact protection, which is what you’d expect from a leading brand. It’s a very substantial Group 1 car seat, well padded and comfortable, and it requires the use of the base unit, with isofix and the support leg, so overall, it’s not a cheap bundle. But if you do intend to use this car seat rear-facing right up until the age of 4, then it’s right up there with the best of the bunch in terms of safety and design.Equally, you might decide to swap it round to forward facing before your child is 4. Maybe they are particularly tall and getting cramped. My son is 3.5 years old and quite short, so he can still sit rear-facing in reasonable comfort. Taller children might find that their legs have to be bent at the knee, out to the sides, a bit like a frog. But you may feel that that’s a small inconvenience which is overridden by the safety benefits... I’ll leave that up to you to decide. The harness is very easy to use, it has lovely wide, padded straps with soft touch fabric that won’t rub if it’s against bare skin, and the seat fabric itself is also premium feel, soft and smooth.Everything about this seat feels well built, solid and designed to last. The seating positions can be adjusted, from semi-reclining to more upright, though it’s not nearly as upright as my forward facing seat by design, with maximum impact protection being the key driver of the design, I believe. The height of the head cushions and harness is also easy to adjust up and down as the child grows. All the locking components of this seat, the harness and the clips that lock it to the isofix base for example, all have a solid, robust, ‘click’ sound as they engage. I really like proper, easily heard, audible safety features which take the guess work out of installing the seat. In my case, the seat remains on the base from day to day, so once it’s fitted correctly I can just leave it and forget about it.Overall, the seat and base work very well to provide a comfortable, safe travelling experience for children under 4. We will continue to use this seat in my husbands car till my son reaches 4 years old. He has been quite happy to use it in recent weeks, and as he seems to be indifferent to rear-facing, with no apparent reluctance to lose his view out of the front windscreen, we will just keep the iPad to hand to keep him entertained on longer journeys. In my car, he will still be forward facing, with an impact shield, a choice I remain happy with.4 stars.

This Maxi-Cosi Pearl One I-size is quite possibly the best Group 1 seat I've ever come across, it's really been designed with parents and children in mind, or at least BY parents of children in the group 1 size range. Not only does it allow for extended rearward facing up until 105cm, but it has a GENIUS seatbelt system which makes getting a fractious or wriggly toddler much easier. Plus it's super comfortable and washable!! Meaning little one is comfy and the seat doesn't have to get stinky or sticky.First of all the GENIUS seatbelt system had to have been designed by someone who has lost the plot trying to get a tantruming toddler into a regular car seat and struggled to find the straps whichhave a habit of disappearing up their bottoms and behind their backs and once you've got one bit in the other bit disappears etc- this is GENIUS, so simple but brilliant, when you release the catch the over shoulder straps sit up in the air like over shoulder restraints on a Rollercoaster and the crotch pad bends forward and stays there. So when it comes to putting your little one in, it's simple, no fumbling, no lifting, no searching, just one arm, two arms and click, done. I could kiss the person who designed this, and my girls are actually pretty well behaved, I imagine there will be offers of having babies from people who have difficult to put in the car seat children! The extended rear facing to 105cm is a brilliant way to secure your child's safety as all research points towards this being the safest method for young children to travel. I was gutted when my eldest had to go forward facing at 2 1/2 because all the extended rearward facing seats at the time did not fit our vehicles, she could still fit in this but she's too accustomed to forward facing so this will be used for my youngest who despite being 2 is a bit short and a bit light to go into this yet. This is a great seat for her safety as both my daughters have a genetic condition that makes them slight, so if this goes to 105cm she could be in this until she is around 7 and the workmanship on this seat makes me trust that this would last those 4 or so years. The only downsides are practical and personal. The practical is it only fits in the Family fix isofix base which is another hefty purchase, and makes this a very expensive system, however, I do think that it is worth it if you buy the system from birth and use the Rock group 0 seat for your newborn and upgrade to this when they outgrow that. But if you are only buying into the system from group 1 it's not as much bang for your buck. The personal isn't really a downside it's that I only wish this car seat had come out 3 years ago when I was upgrading my eldest from group 0-1 as I could've had rearward facing for longer, perhaps not as long as her little sister will as she is less laid back than her baby sister and wants to see everything, but still I would've felt less mum guilt for her forward facing so early. This is great for helping combat mum guilt, and making baby feel comfy and be safe and secure as they become a toddler and beyond.

First off I need to point out that this seat requires an isofix base – namely the Maxi-COSI FamilyFix One Base Car Seat, i-Size which is £199. The base slides onto your car’s isofix points and clicks into place and the care seat then clicks onto that. Isofix is a very easy was to fit a car seat and makes it less likely that you’ll install it incorrectly.I was delighted to see that Maxi-Cosi had released a new extended rear-facing (erf) car seat and was delighted to be able to try it out. I have two erf car seats from other brands (BeSafe and Axkid) and was keen to see how this offering from Maxi-Cosi would compare. The first car seat I bought for my child was a Maxi-Cosi Milofix and it wasbought because I thought it rear-faced to 18kgs only to find that it was rear-facing to 13kgs only and then needed to forward face. I was disappointed as I’d been impressed with the quality of finish on the Maxi-Cosi and it could be used from birth but I really wanted an erf seat. I replaced it with the BeSafe IziKid X2 (erf to 18kg or 105cm) and then bought an Axkid Minikid for our family car as it has a higher height and weight limit (though is belt fitted) so will last even longer (25kg or 125cm).So imagine my excitement when I saw a Maxi-Cosi erf seat! When I got my delivery I couldn’t wait to unbox it and when I removed it from the box, I was once again impressed with the quality. It looks great and is very well finished. It has the Swedish Plus Test markings on it – a must for any car seat my little one will be in as it is the strictest car seat safety test to pass - both of my other erf seats have passed this test. Some people might say it is expensive when you factor in the cost of the base (which is essential) but I would counter that you can’t put a price on the life of a child. I will pay this and more (and actually have done) to ensure that my child is in the safest seat they can be in. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I’m doing everything in my power to keep my child as safe as I can while driving on the roads. Extended rear-facing is the safest way to travel for a child (it is five times safer than forward facing) and has been proven time and again – we in the UK are only just starting to catch on now and I’m glad that a big name like Maxi-Cosi have added an erf seat to their product line.It was super easy to fit in our family car and within a few minutes my little one was testing it out. Their verdict was it is “comfy,” is “great” and that they “like it” so a thumbs up from them! It’s certainly a thumbs up from me as it has passed stringent car seat safety tests and will keep my little one rear-facing until at least 4 years old. Car seat manufacturers please take note - we need more seats like this please!Extended Rear Facing is FIVE times safer than Forward Facing - buy this seat and its base!

It may only be a matter of time before all child seats have to be backwards facing as it is the safer option, but many of these seats just don't fit well in a car for long, especially as your child gets older; not to mention that keeping a 3 and a half year old entertained is bad enough when they can look out of the front window. If you are planning to go rear facing, then the 'Maxi-Cosi Pearl One' may just be the best option. It comes at a cost and is not standalone so also needs the base, but once you have the 'Pearl' and the Isofix base that works with it, you have a very secure and simple seat to use.The 'Pearl' fits effortlessly into 'Family Fix' base and can be removed just as simply. What I have found when using Maxi Cosi is that they have gone through a high quality design phase so that the product does what a parent needs. Attaching the belts is very simple and moving the headrest to appease taller children is also simple. You could quite easily use this seat with a range of children and not really have to spend much time fiddling to get it to fit. The ability to rest the back is also easy, so a child can recline easily for sleeping. I found that in a moderate sized family care there was enough room for this seat to recline all the way and not get in the way of the front seats, but smaller cars may struggle. The material is well made and hardy. It wipes easily for quick spillages and can be removed and washed in the washing machine should things get a little nastier. When fitting both the seat and the base, it is simple to set up and see if your connections are right by looking for the green stickers. If they are red you need to adjust something. I have noticed that the seat being rear facing means that there is effectively no dangle room for the kid's legs, instead as they get a little taller they become increasingly squashed. This is an inherent problem with rear facing seats and not one that Maxi Cosi have been able to solve.

We have been wanting to try a rear facing seat for our toddler Sometime especially as it is now known that these are considerably safer than forward facing. Maxi cosi I’ve come up with this I size model which requires a specific place to allow rear facing for up to 4 years old or 105 cm. This seems very encouraging to begin with however unfortunately our toddler who was already very used to sitting in forward facing maxi cosi pearl Initially did not like sitting rear facing and then appeared to be uncomfortable with having her legs affectively in a cross-legged frog position. I’m not sure that this is comfortable for very long car rides although of course it would be considered to be safer. In the first week of its outing we had one episode of a huge vomit on this particular car seat (I wonder if this was due to travelling backwards and effectively a tyoe of travel sickness ) So I got to test out the getting the whole system out to wash it and clean it although I hadn’t wanted to just at this point! Insured whilst it is generally easy to strip and wash the unit down there are lots of crevices and knocks and crannies which were tickly difficult to clean especially on the base and around the belt. The cover was easily washable in the washing machine but we had to use a hose to get rid of all the vomit residue and I still think that the straps could not come out for proper cleaning. There really isn’t much guidance on this even on the Internet or YouTube videos. For us I think this will become a car seat that we would not use so often due to this experience and seeking travel sickness (my toddler has vomited once since birth only this was the second time!) It’s a shame that car seats cannot be tried before buying as this would not be a good fit for our family but the product itself is good, just beware that the straps are very difficult to clean in these situations.

Please note this can only be used with the £199.99 FAMILYFIX ONE I-SIZE BASE. It is designed to be a part of the entire system. For the purposes of this test, I borrowed the base unit from a friend. I have looked at the system before and was put off by the price. It is very expensive compared with a normal car seat. The only reason I tested it, is because I received the seat free of charge from Vine.Once the Base unit is fixed in place, this seat slides onto the base plate. It is fully adjustable and once in the correct position, you hear a loud click, which means it is now safely in place. The system allows for many different adjustments for the size of the seat you are affixing it to and even the angle of the chair. The big plus of this is the quality. Everything is well made, the three-point locking system is excellent and you can wash everything very easily. It is one of, if not the safest seat on the market with all-round impact protection. It is designed for 6 months to 4 years. It is simply one of the best designed, safest but most expensive car seat systems you can buy. It works well, but this is a serious investment. If you are happy spending the money to buy the two parts, it is to be highly recommended.

This is a fantastic seat but MUST be bought with the isofix base. It is rear facing from about 12 months to approx 4 years (or 105cm which in our case seems likely to be before 4 years!).It clicks into the isofix base immediately and is relatively light should you need to move it.What I love is the fact that the shoulder straps and crotch buckle are by default raised away from the seat meaning no fumbling underneath a wriggly toddler who is resisting being put in their car seat! Our baby is 18lb 8oz and is too small for this car seat right now however we are happy to be switching her into this. Our 4 year old was forward facing at about 9 months (extended rear facing didn't seem to be an option back then,if it was then I certainly wasn't aware of it!) but nowadays there is so much information about ERF I'd actually feel pretty uncomfortable putting our precious cargo in a forward facing seat and we never travel on Motorways or even A-roads!

This seat is. It a stand alone item and requires the i size maxi cosi base. The seat is a good mix of both comfort and safety. It fits into the base unit quickly and easily allowing you the convenience of removing it at will, in my area there have been a spate of thefts of car seats so being able to bring it into the house over night is a real bonus for me.The seat is lovely and cushioned for little one, giving them maximum comfort for when they inevitably fall asleep. The fastening clip is excellent, very secure but not impossible to fasten around a wriggle little one who has decided that they don’t want to play along today. As you would expect from a car seat it complies with all safety standards,is made from the best materials and is incredibly strong.I feel very confident in this system.

Bit fiddly to get into the iso fix, and very high up when child is sat in it. Can't imagine how a child up to 4 could fit in it. Very sturdy and secure when in place.
