The pad is lightweight but tough enough to withstand constantly being dropped. Stylus is attached by string with a neat space on the reverse for it to be tidied away,Bought for a 3y/o who had previously showed NO interest in writing, bought i will admit to simply make up the cash id spent on both kids, and its one they fight over,3y/o has gone from scribbles to writing first 4 letters of her long name, she can recognise her letters and can differenciate between upper and lower case (puh = p / Pee =P) this is within one calendar month of "playing" with it. She has older friends in reception class and they love it too - she will play teacher and pick a letter -they then copy the lights movements using pen and paper (she does it on little screen)and then they all cheer because they're so clever.I will agree with a previous reviewer that it doesnt actually tell the child when a letter is copied incorrectly, BUT as they practice they do get better and after a short while she was picking a letter and writing it before the lights had finished,Games include what letter is itwill teach them to draw flowers and stars as well as basic shapesI find the quality of the screens just a little poor, for a leapfrog product, BUT considering the price and overall quality and functionality of the "game" this is a minor gripe,The instructions to use the pad are super simple - no adult interfering required your jobs is to be amazed and clap, If i need 5 mins peace i say lets play lower case while i do the dishes - and she is away, Had i known about this with my older son id have bought him one too at the same age, (he plays onthe sly and his handwriting is much neater already)Another way of "playing" with this is to watch alphablocks (cbeebies) as they have a slightly better annunciation of the letters and show the sounds in context with the letters on the pad,She calls it her pad and adores it,I would highly recomend it to anyone with a child that can hold a pen and follow a series of lights, im impressed with the leaps she has made in just a month, now i need leapfrog to have a stage 2 version so i can help her move alongI paid £12 for mine (new) whilst it was on offer, i think this was a bargain, and knowing what i do now would pay the £20 (approx) asking price

I got this for our now three year old birthday. It's pretty safe to say that it was her favourite present and she loves playing with it every day. It's a nice size for toddler hands and the pen is attached to the board with sturdy string so the pen can't get lost but still lots of room for the child to be able to operate the pen on the pad. My daughter does have the habit of using this upside down so the writing pad is at the top. I think it's easier for her to write with the pad at the top but it does frustrate me as I don't want her learning letters upside down! We bought this for her as she had been showing an interest in letters and thought this would promote the next step of actually writing letters. She now can do a few letters without having to trace them and when writing with pencils on paper so we are really happy. Their are two noise levels which is great when you need it to be a bit quieter, that's if your child will let you have it one the quite mode that is! There are two levels to this the first where you trace the letters and the the second where you follow with the machine. My daughter is still on level one and does get confused when she accidentally changes it to level two. I like the fact that when they have wrote the letter it tells the child how to phonetically sounds the letter. My daughter is defiantly getting better at phonics because of this. She also loves that when you have wrote a number it gets you to pat your tummy or stamp your feet the number amount of times. No wonder she keeps writing number ten so stamp her feet ten times! My daughter loves it and it's great for keeping her entertained.

This is a great educational toy. However, there are some flaws in the design which I think could be improved.Firstly, 'slider' type screen is a bit flimsy, I can't see it being durable in a household with children who are quite rough on their toys. Also, the screen itself does not perfom brilliantly, the pen does not make enough of a mark on the screen when used and sometimes hardly shows up especially when the lights are on underneath the pen marks to show you where to write. The cord on the pen could do with being a bit longer too as its quite difficult to get the pen into the correct position to write. The toy has a couple of functions, capital letters, lowercase letters, a 'play'function and a drawing function. I think the drawing one is a bit of a waste of time and should have been utilised to include another educational aspect e.g. time telling (child could draw in hands of the clock when told what time to write etc) or short words etc. A final criticism would be that the sound is very annoying after a while and it has no volume control (only a 'loud' and 'louder' type button, so that should be improved in any future design.Despite this, my children enjoy this toy and I would say that it is worth the money. A good pre-school toy to prepare your child for letter forming in preparation for primary school.Recommended.

I bought this in the hope of keeping my 26 month old amused on long car journeys and it certainly did the job. In the two weeks that we've had it it has become a firm favourite - although she doesn't yet understand the concept of tracing over the light and keeps shouting at it to stop moving! She enjoys drawing on the scribble pad and the lights and sounds it makes. It does however teach some of the letter sounds differently to the way I would, and the letter construction doesn't seem to be quite correct in some instances. There also seems to be too much focus on the letter names rather than the letter sounds. The scribble pad is also a bit tempermental - okay for the money but a bit frustrating at times when the slider gets stuck or the lines simply disappear or won't form.Unfortunately my daughter sometimes suffers from travel sickness... so this toy is currently in quarantine hoping Daddy will be able to revive it from a vomit shower!Hoping to to get some more use out of it yet...!

My 3 year old has recently taking an interest in letters/words, the sound they make and how to write them. So I purchased this little helper to help him form the letters and understand the sounds. It does the job well, the pad is like those toys with the pull along bar to rub out what has been drawn - which was not what I expected. Its sometimes doesn't draw the line, but he doesn't seem to bothered, he just goes over it again. Its a great toy because he can practice without me hovering over him, showing him how to do it and eventually frustrating him - I.E. It allows him to explore and learn independently. The activies and voice instructions/praise are easy to understand and are clear. Its early days, but definetly a good buy, particularly if the child has an interest in letters. Its a good size as well, big enough for little hands, but small enough to move around. Giving it 4 overall because we haven't had the toy long enough to give a full review, but 5 given for educational value.

Had this for a year now. Well my 4yr old can write her alphabet on paper without any mistakes thanks to this toy. The batteries in them are still lasting. You can also learn to draw shapes and its great that it teaches how to write uppercase and lowercase letters. Highly recommended. It doesn't get full stars because the pen should of been made like a regular pen, not a big chunky one. I read in some reviews that letter formation is not accurate with some of the letters, my opinion to this is that it doesn't matter how you write your letters, just as long as you can write them and read them. This toy might be a bit confusing for children who have already started school and learning to write the alphabet from they teacher, but my child already knew how to write the alphabet before she started school and I told her to write them in the way she knew, it doesn't matter how the teacher writes them. We all write differently when we grow up anyway.

This is fantastic. My daughter received it for her third birthday. She loves those wipe clean books where you can practice numbers and letters and shapes and things, but is always leaving the lids off the pens! This has two levels, so when she's older we can move to the harder challenges. It has games and challenges and congratulates them when they've done well. It's a great size for her to just sit and play with it on her lap, and the pen is perfect size for tiny hands. It also fits into a holder on the back, so it's not just hanging loose when not in use.The screen is little, but it's fine for what it's used for, they're writing single numbers and letters, not a four page essay. There are two volume options, my daughter of course likes the loudest one, but it's not a bad volume. This is a great learning tool, non messy penmanship skills, learning letters and numbers. She's barely put it down since she got it.

I bought this for my son and daughter who have just turned 5 and 6 years old, my son had been learning to write for a year, and struggled to get the hang of it, and my daughter was just learning at school, so I thought it would be a great learning tool. When it arrived I realised I should of bought two, they loved it and spent ages on it, I figured the novelty would wear off, but it still hasn't. The only thing I was a bit disappointed with was the writing pad, I thought it was like a leapster where it recognises what is written, but it doesn't, they could do anything, not follow the dots, and it doesn't notice, I found it best to sit with them and help them do it the first few times till they got the hang of it.Other than that, both my kids writing has improved, they enjoy learning to write which is the important thing. This is a top toy, really good value for money, I would recommend!

My 4 year old son had this bought for him on his birthday. He loved it straight away. Its easy to use, and has really helped him write his letters. Also very easy to take in the car & to friends houses. It has afew settings - tracing capital & small letters, & shapes/pictures. It also has guess the letter, as the toy starts to draw it. My 3 year old daughter also uses it, and to my amazement has picked it up really quickly, as is doing really well on it. Its so good, I've recommended it to friends, and bought it for 2 presents (for a 3 year old girl, and an 8 year old who has special needs). The only slight problem with it is the slider that wipes it clean - occasionally you have to wiggle the slider to get it across - but it seems to right itself quickly.I'd highly recommend this toy (for 3 to 5 year olds)- one of the best things they've had.

This is excellent. I bought the number one too. My only niggle is that the screen is easily scratched - even using the writing tool it comes with. The very soft writing screen does not allow for a child writing heavily on it. The screen already has a million dents and scratches in it. DON'T LET THIS PUT YOU OFF THOUGH. When the toy is in use, and the screen is lighting up the letter to be traced, you can't notice/see the scratches and dents of previous attempts. It is fantastic and is teaching my just turned 4yr old how to write, and the difference between numbers and letters. It teaches big letters and small letters, it pronounces them in phonics too. Overall, I'm very happy with it. Oh,the other niggle is that the screen wiper that wipes the screen, is extremely flimsy. I'm wonderng how long that is going to last.

I bought this toy for my 6 year old boy & girl. Since I've received it a week ago it's been played with all day long. It seems really durable although we've only had it for a week. The formation of the letters is really helpfull, specially for my son 6 y.o., who is left handed and has some problems with his writing. My 2 y.o. daughter really enjoys it too, and she's trying to follow the light in forming the letters & shapes. It's been a brilliant toy overall with a very clever design. I would recommend it to anyone who wants sth enjoyable that will also help the little ones learn the letters.P.S. We learn english as a second language & I really like the fact that the letter z is called - zed - instead of -zi as in many other talking toys.Excellent buy.

I bought this for my 4 year-old daughter's birthday. My friend's son had been given one for his birthday and she was very interested and sat with it for quite some time when she was given a shot. Now she has her own she plays with it often and can easily access all the functions herself. The Scribble&Write is particulary good at the moment because my daughter's keen to write for herself. The sound effects and little tunes that accompany the activities are not wearing on the ears and it's very easy to make out what's being said and understand the instructions. There's also a handy little space on the back to hold the pen when it's not in use.I would recommend this to anyone...even my seconddaughter who's 20 months old loves it.

My son has played with this toy every day since he got it. He's nearly 4 and it's just right for him as he's learning his shapes and letters at school. He figured out how to play the different modes all by himself. It's helping him learn how to hold a pen for better control, to get to know his letters and shapes better and hand-eye coordination to follow the red lights that light up to show him where the follow with the pen. The music is catchy and the toy is solid and chunky so I think it could withstand the knocks and drops it will get with my son! It's so good that we bought the same thing for his friend who's just a little younger. An educational toy that's good fun too.I'd say from age 3 minimum.

This toy has surpassed all my expectations! It has two stages, to accommodate your child's skill level. The first level simply shows the child how to write the letter or number and tells them the sound it makes but the second level gives more direction when printing by only showing the next step once the child has placed the stylus on the flashing dot, if the child strays from the lights showing the strokes for the letter it asks them to start again. I bought it for my daughter who is 4 and she uses the second level and I will be buying it for my 3 year old niece for her birthday. My daughter enjoys playing with it and is so proud to show off what she has learned.
