The reviews are a bit mixed and I think that's understandable because there are times it's hard to get the device to do what you want. But it *is* possible to do what it advertises and it's really fantastic when it works, and once you have it configured it works fabulously well and your child is basically never forced to confront any of the frustration from the platform, so I won't deduct any stars for that. I'll try to break it down but will start by just saying that my 5-year-old daughter has used this for a little over a year and she LOVES it.The books have very small dot patterns embedded throughout the images on all the pages. The pen is "loaded" with data for various books and when it knows what book it's looking at,it knows what the dot pattern for that book means and it reads, from the page, whatever it's instructed to do. This might be: read the story, read a word the child taps the pen on, play a game (e.g. identify something of a color, find an emotion, find an object, do some math). There is really a *lot* of interactivity with the books through the story and games that you get with this platform. But if you don't have the book on the pen, the pen will tell the child to ask a parent to update the pen with the book. This is where it gets challenging because the software just doesn't work very well. I use it with Windows and sometimes the device isn't recognized by Windows, or the LeapFrog software can't seem to talk with the pen, or it's hard to navigate through the LeapFrog software to find the books to load onto the pen. This is (thankfully) rare, though, and the pen has reasonable capacity to store a lot of books (I have 10-20 on mine or so) and once it's set, it's ready to interact with your whole library. I think all of the frustration with this platform is in this process.Three other things I'll mention.1) As other reviewers have said, there are some backward compatibility issues, I guess. I haven't encountered this. I originally got an older generation pen from a used kid stuff sale before I bought one of these pens (eventually I got too many books for that very-old pen to store). I fully believe this is an issue for some books + pens because I've read about it multiple times, but it's never impacted me.2) People ask "why can't they just put all the books on the pens?" but the answer is kinda obvious if you think about attempting to support that kind of business. There are tons of books you'll never see or care about and it doesn't really make sense to build in storage for a full library of everything. And the library expands, so if you buy a pen today and a new Disney movie comes out tomorrow that your kid wants the book for, you'd be out of luck if they tried to design it this way. ("Why can't they just support MicroSD and put a proprietary format file on the card for the book?" would be an EXCELLENT question, though...)3) The books are ridiculously expensive and you almost definitely should not buy one new. Go to your local GoodWill / Salvation Army and you'll find some here and there.

Update in 2020:I ***would*** like to purchase one of these for each of my niece/nephews as this has best learning toy we've found so far. This is especially since all parents of little kids right now are looking for screen free activities to engage their kids during COVID lockdown!!!Unfortunately, leapfrog is no longer supporting products for this pen. So you can't easily purchase the books/activities that go with the leapreader. So frustrating! I know they have a new "pen" called LeapStart Go, but my impression from briefly looking at reviews of that product suggest it's just not the same. The leap reader is completely screen free and encourages a lot of interaction with books (even for kidsas small as 3.5 years old).==========old review=============We have used leapreaders in our house for approx three years now. The oldest one I had finally gave out b/c the optical scanner malfunctioned. Even so, I think it's a great value and I purchased new ones for both kids. (And really, I cannot blame the company, my kid was NOT particularly careful with his LR).******Why do I love it? It's a great way to keep young kids entertained without the use of a screen!!!******You can download audiobooks and music via their stand alone computer based app. My older kid (approx 5 yrs) listened to a geronimo stilton mouse mystery on constant repeat during our last car trip and it kept him very engaged. (we had to beg him to listen to a stink and a junie B jones story to give us a break sometimes). My younger kid (approx 3) listened to a laurie berkener song on constant repeat during that same car trip.Of course, it is not just a mini MP3 player for kids. The interactive books you purchase are GREAT, it's not just about having the pen "read the book" for your kids. Each page of the books is interactive, so when your child touches an image there will be a corresponding sound or dialogue. It really brings books to life for them. Furthermore, there are great games/activities in some of the sets, we particularly like the body board "book" that includes a fun song about brushing your teeth and a game naming different parts of the body. Pretty much every book has an activity associated with it - for instance the beginning reader books have activities that help them with phonetics.PLEASE EVERYONE LET LEAPFROG KNOW THAT THEY ARE BEING SHORT SIGHTED. I believe the company is focusing their efforts on tablets, which makes sense market-share-wise. But they could also provide the leapreader as a choice for discerning parents that are looking for screen substitutes. Right now I've decided to stockpile leapreader supplies in case they get harder to find in the future. Keep supporting the leapreader please!!!!!! Our family LOVES them! I want to be able to give them as gifts for nieces and nephews, but it's hard to do when I'm not sure about the future of the product! (you know, since some of them are still infants).

I got this for my daughter who is 4 years and a few months old, and she loved it!I plugged the LeapReader into my PC via the supplied cable to charge the pen (it has built in batteries, so no need to buy lots). I used this time to also install the software for the pen and download the free material. The book supplied with the pen is a nice taster for what it can do; it has pages from across the LeapReader range - but I would have also liked to have seen a full book come with the reader itself at this price. In terms of what the pen can do - I was amazed! Not only does it read the text within the stories/books, you can place the pen over different characters and the pen actually recognises where you have placed it.Eg, you might be reading the book on the solar system, place the pen on the planet Earth, and it will say "Earth; the planet we live on".You do need to install the appropriate software for each book onto the pen; I am not sure how many at a time you can store total on the pen, and this does also mean that if you don't have access to a PC/Laptop, then you won't be able to use this pen.I am still amazed at how the pen can recognise different parts of the page and different pictures and icons. It uses this to great effect in games and making each page multifunctional. I'll give the example of the Solar System book again; each page has different icons which you can "tap" on to change the function of the page. One might activate a game (eg, which planet is Mars?) or educational feature (Eg, you "tap" on a planet, and the pen will read out facts about that planet). It allows children to both learn and also test themselves on what they have learnt using fun games. It also encourages my daughter to try and read words - one function of the pen allows the child to slowly scan words so they can learn to sound the words out and read them for themselves. My daughter's reading has come on in leaps and bounds now, she can try to sound out words such as "Best", "Skip" and even read the word "Drink" without any help, which she wasn't confident in doing before we got this pen.I found that any USB charger can be used to charge the pen, simply use the cable supplied. The LeapReader branded AC adapter isn't too expensive if you don't and might be a good idea if you need to charge the pen away from home.Aside from my issue of not having a full book included in the package, I absolutely love this pen, and more importantly, so does my little princess!

I was genuinely sceptical about this system until I tried it, as I'd never tried this kind of reading system. The actual reading pen is a marvel. It's easy enough for a child to hold and use, but it's incredibly accurate at spotting which point on the page is being touched, down to the millimetre, so a child can touch a word and it will say that exact word, every time. Technologically, it's really, really impressive. The Learning Paper takes it a step further. The Reader doubles as a pencil which will write onto the special paper, and somehow the pen manages to track where it's up to and say the right thing depending on whether you've drawn a letter accurately or done it completely wrong. And,even better, it always says positive encouraging things, and isn't too irritating- which, with kids materials, is always a bonus.Other full marks include the fact that the LeapFrog software is OK- I've seen a lot worse- and the device will charge via USB so you don't need to worry about batteries. It's also pretty durable, as far as I've been willing to test it, which is quite far- it survives banging on the table. Our daughter's already quite interested in reading but it still provided her with an extra layer of fun, and I can imagine that for kids who are more interested in playing with games or smartphones than books, this extra 'gadgetising' of books will make reading and writing a bit more appealing. It's a slight shame that this package doesn't actually come with any proper books. It comes with a sampler book, which contains 2 pages from each of some of the major titles you can buy ("Cars", "Cinderella", "Brave", etc.), but each one is taken from somewhere in the middle of that story and it's not a proper storybook in its own right- you'll need to buy those separately. They're available on Amazon, at prices which are higher than normal books but not ridiculously excessive. I think it would've been nicer if Leapfrog had included at least one proper book bundled with the reader itself (you do get some audiobooks, but you don't get to choose them). I also was a little bit irritated by the packaging, which seemed deliberately designed to make the sampler book look a lot bigger than it actually is. However those minor marketing criticisms aside, I can't mark it less than 5, because not only is this an impressive little gadget, but our daughter genuinely enjoys it as well.

We own a lot of LeapFrog products at our house (tag junior, leap pad 2, and the new leap pad ultra). I'm a huge fan of their educational content. Now that my oldest is approaching Kindergarten, I was wanting him to start working on writing, which makes the LeapReader system great. It has a lot of the same functions as the Tag reader when it comes to reading the books. This can read the story out loud or it can read individual words and help the child learn how to sound out the words. This also has some additional features like built-in audio books, music, and trivia games. It also has an essential feature - the ability to plug in headphones!!! Trust me, after listing to the "Punc punc, punc, punctuation" song 15 times in a row, you'll be thankful. The size makes it portable, it's easy to just throw it in my purse when we have doctor's visits or long waits. The LeapReader "pen" functions using a special type of carbon paper. The positive thing, is that your four year old is not going to be able to color on your walls with this pen, the downside is that it only works on the special paper from LeapFrog, so if they go through all the paper, then you'll need to buy more. Personally, I keep the paper up on a shelf and just get it out one piece at a time to help ration it out. I suppose you could always just have the retrace over again on a "used" piece of paper if you wanted to.As an educational product, I think this is fantastic. Be aware that the book that's included is essentially just a sampler book (not a complete story). My boys like looking at it, but it's not like a typical book with a storyline, it just shows a couple pages from several different books to give you a taste of what the different stories are like. My only other real criticism is that the music selection is seriously lacking for the LeapReader. The LeapPad has a TON of music options (everything from Disney Soundtracks, to Sesame Street). The LeapReader only has the KidzBop albums (which I personally find obnoxious) apart from those, there is only ONE "educational" album apart from the one included with the device. That was rather disappointing, but I'm hopeful that they'll add more selections in the future.

This new LeapReader is far from the first LeapFrog product in the family and so maybe this is why we struggled at first to get it registered online in order to download the free content and install the supporting software (available for Windows and Mac's) - we already have a clutch of LeapFrog devices registered across several accounts - but thankfully it turned out to be a temporary problem. Once you're up and running there's lots to explore and discover with the LeapReader, it looks a bit like a junior Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver and seems almost as multi-functional. Young readers can use it to help them while reading to themselves by getting the LeapReader to speak difficult words they might struggle to recognise,or it can be used to practise basic writing skills by forming letters - cleverly the pen can only make marks on special magic paper (which of course you have to buy) and not your kitchen table or other furniture. It can also be used to play audiobooks, although these have to be unprotected audio files (like those you'd rip from CD's yourself), but there's limited storage onboard so you're limited to relatively short audiobooks - your kids might have to wait for their first smartphone to tackle War & Peace. However the audiobook function turned out to be a favourite feature in our family and at bedtime might turn out to be a favourite feature for tired-out parents too.The included book demonstrates the LeapReader's range of functions but to get full use of it you'll have to start buying the (somewhat expensive) special books the device works with. There's a good range available and cover reading and writing levels across a good range of ages. The writing skills books, which come with the special magic paper, are great for younger kids just starting to read and write but for older kids there are science packs, which explore subjects like the solar system or the human body. The range available means that the device could continue to be useful (and fun) for several years - so be thankful the batteries are both included and rechargeable.

I purchased the Leapreader when my little boy was just 3 and it has been just brilliant. I wasn't sure if it would just be a novelty that would soon lose interest but I liked the concept of using real books rather than a Leappad tablet. At 3 1/2 he was able to use the audiobook function in the car on long journeys and with a bit of guidance quickly learned to touch the pictures of his favourite characters (Disney Pixar Cars book) to hear the sounds. The books entertained him for months. The only issue we had was that he pressed too hard and scratched the pages so I stuck some Sugru on the end of the pen then removed it once his skills improved. I agree with other reviewers that the software isn't great - struggled to install it,it only worked on our Windows 7 machine, and it's very slow to use. Also books can be difficult to source, they can be very expensive in some cases and my boy only uses the Leapreader occasionally by himself. That being said, despite the expense I absolutely love the Leapreader. The 5 stars are for being the best resource for starting to teach him basic reading skills now he's a year older. I bought the Learn To Read vowel book sets and we sit together and he tries to sound out simple 3 letter words then we use the pen to see if he's correct and to explore the sounds. Some of the books also make him laugh and he likes the puzzles at the end. I'm so glad I bought the Leapreader and have no regrets.Update: At 6 years old he can actually read all his Leapreader books but still enjoys using them with the pen when he wakes up very early to keep himself entertained in the early hours. The puzzles in the back of the vowel reading books are his favourites. His letter and number formation is a bit sloppy still so I am using the writing books with Mr Pencil to help him improve. He also really enjoys the audiobooks with his headphones on - they are a great introduction to longer story CDs that he isn't ready for yet but will be in the future. It is still a fantastic resource for us.

My six year old son has taken to the Leapfrog Leapreader Reading and Writing system really well. It's great for him to wind down with and most of the available books offer some good educational content. So far he's learnt all about the human body and dinosaurs and paleontology. We've even been out looking for fossils as a result of reading Leap and the Lost Dinosaur. Whilst it hasn't seen a sea change in his reading skills, he's getting great pleasure from the assisted reading that the Leapreader provides. So far the "reader" part of the system has been more successful for us than the "writing" part. A single sheet of demonstration writing paper is supplied and when Leapreader is placed on the special paper,it guides your child to draw the shape of the letter. My son found Leapreader quite chunky and difficult to write with, so we haven't looked into the several books that are available. As far as the "reading" part goes, a demonstration book is included with this pack but it's basically a series of extracts / adverts for the books that are available to buy. Depending on the book you are reading, there is a set of icons at the bottom of each page that changes the way the Leapreader behaves when your child touches a word with it. Green diamond (Say It mode) Leapreader reads the whole word. Yellow Diamond (Sound it mode) as your child touches each individual letter, Leapreader sounds it phonetically and then says the whole word. Orange diamond (Spell it mode) as your child touches each individual letter, Leapreader says the letter and then says the whole word. There is also a Green Star which usually involves some sort of interactive quiz or game based on what your child has just read. As well as using the Leapreader to help with words, there's various interactive content to be found by touching different parts of the illustrations. It's worth checking the level of interaction that each book has, because not all books we've bought make use of the full range of icons.

The LeapFrog LeapReader Reading and Writing System is one item which I would happily recommend to all those who have children ages four to eight. My nephew who has just started school loves this and still has trouble accepting he has fun while learning. When we first charged the actual reader up and downloaded the necessary files using the USB connecter, I was happily shocked at how much really is involved with the actual system. The makers of the system have certainly researched what children need to know and what pace they are able to learn, as immediately DN1 was having fun while listening and following the story using the reader. He has only started primary school and he is already having homework practising his letters and learning little verses, now with his LeapReader he wants to do more letters and learns as he listens. His teacher already is praising how well he is doing and I know I am biased how wonderful he is but I do believe his LeapReader is really helping him and improving his work as he goes along. When he was at playschool he was not interested with using pen and paper but now he realises that learning to read and write means he can go further forward with his LeapReader. His younger brother now wants a LeapReader of his own as he sees his big brother having fun; I know this will be used for years to come as both boys will receive so much satisfaction from learning as they happily listen to the many songs etc. involved within the system.I love everything about this and I understand that the books can be rather expensive but now instead of buying him sweets every week I give him money and he keeps it until he has enough to get a new book for his reader or he gets one as a treat when he has been good therefore it gives him something he really wants to aim for.I would happily recommend this LeapFrog LeapReader Reading and Writing System is a wonderful product and will give your child many hours of learning fun.

I have been using the LeapReader with my 2 year old daughter who is advanced for her age. She loves to learn new things and has found this reading and writing system to be fun! She gets a lot of enjoyment out of using the special pen that allows her to learn words. Although on the younger side of the age group this is targeted for, it is still a useful tool to start to develop reading and writing skills. My daughter enjoys using the pen to write letters, although she doesn't understand everything she can follow the lines to creates letters. The pen also teaches her words which she will repeat and say out loud herself, especially new words to her which she hasn't heard before! The Pen is a very clever piece of kit.The book that comes with the LeapReader is a taster of what it is about and what it can do. I personally think it should have come with a full on book for the price. You will need to buy full books at a cost as the samples will not keep your child entertained! I have done that for my daughter and it is worth it as the amount of tasks your child can do with the pen is vast. The LeapReader also has a headphone socket to allow your child to listen to audio books without disturbing everyone else which is great for older children as can take this off to bed with them! You get to download 2 free audio books.Overall it is a great educational gift for a child. Remember to fully charge the LeapReader via USB overnight before you give it to your child, as you know what kids are like, very impatient and won't be thanking you when they have to wait to use the LeapReader!!!!!Although this is a very clever piece of kit for the price, I think tablets will start to become the dominant technology for this sort of learning. I know my daughter can work my iPad better than me at only 3! She can open up her favourite Apps and away she goes. That is where I think the long term future lies.

i was very disappointed to see my package was missing the reading pen! the book and the handwriting practice sheets looked wonderful, unfortunately my 5yo could not use the system without the pen.UPDATE: the manufacturer sent me a replacement so i could review this item, and i'm so glad they did - this system is fantastic!! my just-turned 5yo dd knows her basic phonics (e.g., 1st set of bob books), but her letter formation is terrible. i feel such guilt for not working more with her, but with 2 older kids and a job, it is hard to find the time to sit with her and watch her write.this reading and writing system is awesome. she expands her vocabulary with the leap reader books, and the system allows her to go back to unfamiliar words to read aloud. the writing system won't let her go forward unless she begins at the correct starting point and traces over the colored lines. for those who don't have a tag reader, the tip is not actually a pen, it's a pencil mounted onto a thick holder so it's very easy for small hands to manipulate. the best part is the pen is telling her to go back and do it the right way, so she doesn't get angry with me for correcting her. because the leapreader talks, my daughter can practice her writing on the kitchen counter and i am free to prep dinner while i listen to her progress.another reviewer said the USB charging/uploading was kind of a pain. i agree, batteries and bluetooth would have been nice. however, i don't think it's enough of an inconvenience to take a way one star. i look forward to seeing more of this series. i am thoroughly impressed with how technology has been applied to helping kids read and write, and i am not one who believes things like an ipad can replace mom & dad's attention and guidance.

My daughter has had this since coming up to 2 maybe a little earlier and has done really well with it. Started of with just pressing to read and sounds etc then progressed well. She has always been advanced for her age but this has definitely helped and would recommend. It’s also nice to get away from actual devices. Have some learning things on iPad and brought her the kindle with child’s part but she never really took to it. I Have a selection of books from learning to read and write to body maths/ numbers and planets. Only annoyances is pens bit bulky for her to write with ( added cost of the insertable paper is abit annoying also better if you got more than one page for each bit)have mixed the writing ones with wipe clean books I brought. I seem to have got lucky instead of the demo book I got a actual book with it . One out of one of the sets but think that may have been a fluke. Some of the tag books also work with it but you have to check on the website if they do as some don’t. The tag books are better for starting out which is shame as some of the ones that didn’t work I would have liked to have brought but really didn’t want to buy both. To download the content just need to tap the books with the pen then plug into the computer. My laptop isn’t great and yet I’ve only had a issue once, although I think the whole thing was down. It still linked me to the books to simply press download instead of it automatically doing it. You can do multiple at the same time also. Just buy the books and tap each one, then plug into computer. She has about 10 books so far and all stored on the pen not sure how many it will actually take . There’s music and stories also . More can be downloaded of the site.

I got this to replace our older Tag reader. It has more memory, so I was able to place all of our Tag book audio onto it, with room to spare. We were fortunate that the Tag books that we had were all compatible with the new LeapReader (not all of them are, check their website). However, the board book Tag Junior books aren't available on the new LeapReader, which is a shame. With the previous Tag reader, I could place both hardcover Tag books and board book Tag Junior books on it.My kids, ages 2 and 4, love this new LeapReader. Surprisingly, it actually tells stories on its own, without any books required. The kids love this function. They walk around pressing the buttons on the LeapReader and listening to its stories. It also plays educational songs from the Letter Factory and Talking Word Factory cartoons, among others. It's very expensive (retail price $59.99 in Canada), but I was able to find one cheap on amazon and we already have the Tag library of books to go with it.When I first plugged it into the computer, it took about half an hour and 4 updates before it was ready to use. Transferring audiobooks is easier than before, as it automatically starts syncing whatever audiobooks you decide to download from the internet. (In the old software, you had to download to your computer, then once that was all done, slowly sync to the device). However, the software is still nowhere as easy to use as it could be.So I'd recommend the LeapReader, but it could be better improved by (a) lowering the price, (b) adding more backwards compatible Tag book support, especially Tag Junior books, and (c) improving the computer software for it.

*Please note this review is very long*I purchased the Leapreader pen about two years ago. Infuriatingly as other reviewers have commented I too had a faulty pen that would not connect or download any of the many books I had purchased to go with it. Leapfrog were useless and in the end it went in the bin and I had a very unhappy little boy and a bunch of useless books. However, I recently came across it again before Christmas on Amazon at the price of £19.99 and decided I'd bite the bullet and give it one last go.Originally I had issues with connection and the Leapfrog connect software being slow and temperamental but after removing my Antivirus software which was what I believe to be causingconflicting issues with the Leapfrog software I managed to download the books on to the pen with no issues at all. I must say I am very impressed with the quality of the functions of the pens and the amount you can do with them. Children can have the whole story read to them, highlight single words at a time to be spoken to them so they can see how they are pronounced and can play games. As well as the books you can also download music and fun facts from the Leapfrog app store. Since I had my last Leapreader pen they've brought out different activity packs such as the human body, solar system and animal packs which are absolutely Fab! Was well worth the hassle and the wait as I now have a worth while reading tool to help my 6 year old who struggles with reading and writing and finds it's very hard to engage in anything remotely educational.
