I agree with many of the positive points already made in previous reviews and particularly like the use of English childrens' voices by the device, making it much more appealing to children. It does occasionally seem to slip into American when reading 'emails' but that is forgiveable. The software issue referred to in the title relates to the ability to connect the device to a computer via a USB cable. I first downloaded and installed the Leapfrog Connect software on my 2010 Acer desktop running Windows 7 Home. The program required the latest version of Adobe Flash which was duly installed, but unfortunately it wouldn't recognise it and kept demanding the new version of Flash.I then installed the application on my 2011 Samsung Netbook (Win 7 Starter). This time it worked except it wasn't possible to set up the parental account. It transpires that this was due to the program being incompatible with the lower screen resolution of most netbooks. Third time lucky - I dusted off an old laptop running Vista Business and that worked fine.Having spoken to the helpful support line, it seems they are having software issues at the moment and know about some of the problems, in particular with netbooks. Our 2 year old seems to really like his Leaptop. It also seems very good value to me and would get 5 stars if they could just improve the durability of the software.

I bought this for my son for his 2nd birthday. I've been a fan of other leapfrog products so I thought this would be a winner for my little boy.My son loves this laptop and is constantly playing with it. At the moment he does a lot of keyboard mashing and prefers the animal noises and songs most of all however I very much believe that he will grow more and more into it as times goes by.Only today I heard him playing with it and he kept pressing the 'K' button and the laptop was telling him 'K, makes the sound k for kangaroo' (or something along these lines). Later on I asked him if he could show me where K was and he pressed it straight away! I've never shown him this and I didn't prompt him at all.I was really quite shocked and very impressed.ALSO! A added parent bonus. When you plug this laptop into your own computer to update it (make up new emails or change the songs), you have an option to see what activity your child has been doing and what it is that they are learning. Its very good as I for one just thought he was mashing the keyboard and making lots of noise but the breakdown let me see what he was doing and what it meant which I was really happy about. I like to see what he is learning and how I can encourage him so this was a big added bonus.I very much recommend this to other parents.

I read around a few laptops before deciding to purchase this Leaptop. I bought it in Pink for my daughters 1 year birthday as she adores my laptop and I thought it would be a good distraction whilst I use mine. I decided on this one due to the reasonable price and good reviews. After 1 day I can see it is very durable because my daughter has been throwing it off the sofa onto the floor without anything breaking. The screen is small but more annoyingly has no colour only black and grey which I notice most toys have but I would've preferred a colour-screen to keep her attention. The most annoying part was that I could not put her name into the Leaptop when I personalised it as the Leaptop is restricted to only saying a few names of whcih my daughter's was not one.It does have may of the common names but would've been nice if there was a way to perhaps the audio of my daughters name so it could refer to her by name as opposed to just writing her name on the screen as she cannot read yet. Other than that it is good but the personalisation is less fantastic than I thought it would be.I ordered this on Sunday and received it Tuesday so great service from Amazon of course.

This is a very good toy. It is fun and you learn with it. I bought it for my two year old son and he adores it.You connect it to a computer and write the name of your child say Romeo. so each time you turn it on it says "Hello Romeo" you don't choose from pre-set names, you write whatever your child is known as say Sammy, Johnie, Kiki, Nikki, or any short cut name. It allows you to make that choice, so it makes the toy so personal for your child. It calls his name now and then. The email too is a brilliant idea. as we listen to the emails I composed to my son. he just beams with excitement! It is a good toy both for fun and learning. You learn have 26 alphabets with different 26 sounds of any musical instrument,26 different sounds of different animals, 26 names of animals that begin with each letter of the alphabet and some music. How brilliant!and it celebrates the letter that begins with your child's name. The battery life is also good. It takes only 2 small batteries and really lasts.my little boy adores it and i think is a very good bargain and worth every penny. No regrets.

I've been impressed by several LeapFrog toys, including this one, but not so impressed by their support. I don't know if I did something wrong, but after setting up his name, the toy speaks in mixed American and British accents. Most of it is British, but blogs, some emails and pressing the letter key of our son's name come out in American. Maybe it is because I am in Peru, or maybe it is because I used the Mac version of the connect software -- although the connect software is set to UK/Ireland, and the toy was bought in the UK. Support is a confusing mess, but eventually I sent a message to UK support, and they replied with a canned message asking me to send the item to a UK Freepost address for analysis. So that is an unhelpful dead end. It seems more likely to be a problem with the Connect software anyway.Well, never mind. The toy itself is doing its job. Just the other day I was drawing a turtle for our 2-year-old son and he immediately went to his 'computer' and pressed the T key to get the turtle to display. So he is certainly learning from it.

I brought this for my 20month old son for Christmas and as advised setted it up the night before via my own but not so colourful laptop. Very easy to set up and straight forward. I love the fact that you have the choice of US English or UK English. Not only with the accent but with the sound of words/letters too. Especially where the differences are in Z and also the choices of mummy or mommy etc. These things are important with reguard to where our children grow up, since these are everyday sounds/letters they hear so kudo's for the choice of the English! From the moment my son first pressed a button he was laughing and engaged into it.It was hard pressed getting him to open the rest of his presents as he was happy to just sit and play with his leaptop!!I got it when the price was reduced but will say It's worth every penny as the child will grow with this toy for a long while to come learning his ABC's, Counting and music! Even having email's from his mum! lol

Well-constructed and designed mini "laptop" for your toddler. The settings can be personalised by logging onto the Leapfrog website and setting up an account, then each time the laptop is started or an interactive program is used, it will address your child by name. There are plenty of functions on the device to keep them amused and it serves as both a play and educational tool. This is the second one I have bought over the last three years, and my only gripe is that the graphics desperately need upgrading, even if this means a slight rise in price. At present, the blocky, 80s-style images are not appealing even to kids of this age when most have some access to smartphones and tablets with theirbold colours and realistic visuals. So it really doesn't compute that the Leapfrog persist with this prehistoric technology - particularly when, that aside, they have produced such a worthy item.

My daughter was given this at christmas. She had just turned four and we thought perhaps to simple for her but she loves it. Were not a great fan of electronic noisy toys so it is a bit of a novelty for her. It is great for car journeys and frequently joins us out and about, where she has to sit still and wait. She likes the personalised element although it just stock emails that you pick from. Also the personalised part is in an american accent, which is slightly grating (or at least thats how ours has been set up). Most impressive is the amount of times it has been dropped on our stone floors and it absolutely fine. I think it actually has a bit too much going on to be educational, the phonics bit is the least fun therefor the least played with. If thats what your looking for, she was also given the fridge phonics set by leapfrog which she also loves.

I bought this for my 2 year old daughter who absolutley loves this toy. She has been playing with it off and on for 3 days now and has already learnt to spell her name thanks to the personalised song we downloaded, she also nearly has the alphabet off by heart thanks to the alphabet song. This toy is really effective as it uses song and repatition to aid learning. She particularly likes the questions about animals and shouts out the answers before she presses the paw button.I would say you won't get a better educational yet fun toy for the money. Top tip is to personalise the leaptop before you give it to your child this takes five minutes on the Leapfrog website and will secure your childs interest from the start.I am so pleased with this that I am now looking at more Leapfrog items for my daughter.

I bought this toy for my daughter's third birthday and she absolutely loves it! Once I connected it to the internet and personalized the welcome greeting to say and type her name, the toy became even more amazing for her. She loves pushing the buttons and dancing to the songs and the best thing is that when I get tired of hearing the same songs I can just plug it into the USB, connect and change the songs! There are many different choices which are free! It is also definitely durable. My daughter left it out in the garden and it started to rain, by the time I realized it was out there it was soaked! None-the-less I brought it inside, dried it and it carried on working as normal!I would definitely recommend this product - I can see me taking it along for car journeys to keep my little one entertained!

I bought this when it was a good price for my daughter for her 2nd birthday. She doesn't tend to pay much attention to the educational element of electronic toys so I wasn't sure how successful this one would be but it's been brilliant. She was just starting to learn the alphabet and this has really helped her. She's also learnt some new animals from it. It would be nice if there were a couple more games to play though and its a shame you can't personalise it with the child's name. Also each letter is represented by a different animal but they obviously struggled with some letters - such as U for 'umbrella bird',not something I had heard before let alone recognise a picture of it so I'm not sure how a 2 year old is supposed to when I couldn't help her with that one!

I bought this for my 18 month old daughters 2nd christmas and she loves it. She's still a bit too young to fully engage with it but loves the songs I downloaded for her and the fact that when you turn it on, it says her name! I think this is a genius product especially when it cost me less than £15 from amazon and you are able to personalise it with her name & favourite songs from the leapfrog website. Its very practical in that the alphabet goes from A to Z left to right and not like a keyboard and is travel friendly being so small and compact. Its durable aswell as my little girl is quite rough and manages to drop things often.I'm only giving it 4 stars as she hasn't fully embraced it yet with all the features but I think this will be a matter of time.

I bought this laptop for my son's 2nd birthday. He has taken a real interest in the last few months (he is 32 months now) and has learnt a lot from it. It teaches the alphabet and phonics which they teach in nursery/reception and he has been repeating the letters and sounds. He can now recognise letters like w, m, e and o pointing them out if he sees them in written form. The voice is English, not American which is a bonus. It also keeps him busy in the car and I can always rely on it to divert his attention when he's doing silly things or if I need five minutes peace and quiet. :)My 7 month old loves the sounds it makes as well whilst trying to stuff it in her mouth! All in all would definitely recommend and the price is very good for what you get.

I bought the Leaptop for my grandson Ethan and was very pleased with the quality. I have previously purchased other leapfrog toys and always rate them very highly. When l'm looking after Ethan he loves to send an 'E' to mammy and always has a smile on his face whislt doing it. He is 2 1/2 years old and bangs on the keys like crazy so very pleased its durable. Although I must admit it looked very strange watching him the first time he used it. His little fingers were tapping on the keybaord like a well trained typist. For the price it amazing. Only thing I would change is music choice it would have been nicer to have popular nursery rhymes with lyrics for him to sing along to.Would highly recommend it.

This is a great product! I had read many reviews before I decided to get it for my three year old. She DOES love getting the mail and the pre installed songs are nice and familiar. The only thing I have my doubts on is that after installing it on my pc.. THE PC JUST CRASHED and i had this massive VIRUS. I had often heard that these electronic toys you connect to your pc could have pre installed viruses on them. I have no idea if this was the case but it was kinda weird that it happened right after I did that. Guess my daughter won't be getting any more mails from mommy and she will hear the same 5 songs for a good long time as I won't plug it in my pc another time just in case...
