Wow! What a processor!! Installation is fairly easy if you're good with your hands. These LGA1150 chips don't have pins like most AMD CPU's, the pins are on the motherboard - lots of videos on YouTube about installation. I've paired this with an H81M-PLUS motherboard and 8GB DDR3 RAM. This will pretty much handle anything you can throw at it. This is perfectly adequate for all modern games (decent GPU needed for most AAA titles) as well as video encoding, file compression etc.Single core performance is good, and gives me ~30 FPS @ 1080p high settings in Flight Sim X (which is very single-core optimised) on an ancient 8800GT card. This processor will automatically “Turbo Boost” to 3.9GHz core speed if temperatures and voltage conditions are met, giving noticeable gains (You don't need a Z97 motherboard or unlocked 4690K chip to get the Turbo Boost). Windows 10 runs beautifully with it, with all drives using AES256 BitLocker encryption showing no noticable lag, I'm yet to find something it can't do quickly. Power consumption is rated at 88 Watt TDP which is great considering the processing power of this. I have a Seidon 120V Ver. 2 AIO liquid cooler, idles at 27-30C and under load maximum is around 47C when benchmarking. This should be no problem for a good (not stock) air cooler, and you can run this CPU safely up to about 70C. It is over two times less power hungry than the top-end consumer AMD CPU's like the FX-9590 which has a TDP of 220W! Total power draw from the wall under load is about 130W with the i5-4690, 2x SSD, HDD, 8800GT and the usual USB peripherals. This means you don't need a 1 KW PSU as some would have you believe, I am using an own-brand 430W PSU no problem. As an upgrade from the six-thread (3-core) AMD FX-6300 I had previously, this is night and day difference especially in single-threaded apps. My main reason for buying this was to play FSX: SE. I went from about 12FPS with medium graphics to 30 stable with all settings much higher. Please do buy this processor, it is amazing and the price is perfect! Hope this helps someone!

Installed Win 7 in literally only a few minutes. If like me you are using a PC for gaming, e-mail, browsing, and word, this is an excellent choice. If you want to additionally do video editing or other complex apps that utilise hyper-threading, then i7 will obviously be faster.Clock for clock the i5 and i7 in gaming, perform within a very very few frames per second of each other. Do a search for 'i5 vs i7 for gaming', to be assured.Search for 'CPU gaming benchmarks' or '4690 gaming benchmarks' to find out how fast this is.I have only had modest Arctic Freezer 7 Pro on the CPU, and gaming it max temps at 63'C in room temp 23'C. (Case fans on medium speed. Temperature will also drop a little when the thermal paste cures.)I will find another CPU cooler and I expect to see comfortably under 60'C. Even when fully loaded with a CPU tester, it only pulls 66'C. (The Freezer 7 Pro I drafted it over from my previous Core 2 Duo PC.)As said I was running a Core 2 Duo, E6700, DDR2 system. The CPU ran desktop work fine, but bottlenecked nearly all modern games with exceptions like Dead Space 3. The Fear series runs fine. Games like Crysis 1, Crysis 2, and Sniper Ghost Warrior, are all examples that would not play through smoothly. .......... The 4690 runs Crysis 3 like a breeze. One core runs at 80% while the other three run anywhere between 20-40%. (Crysis 3 overall 35-50% CPU usage. CPU never overclocked.)

Brought cpu by mistake, paid via my mobile while travelling and didn't realise I brought the non K version until it was too late.. But looked online and there didn't seem to be a lot of difference in benchmarks between this and a heavily overclocked 4690K.. It most cases around 12-15%.. Then I heard you could run it at the full turbo speed constantly and play with the Front side bus.. And as I'd brought a Z97 board (I really did think I'd brought the k version) I pushed the fsb up to 102.57mhz and locked the multiplier to 39 (which is only available because the turbo is 39) and my locked 4690 now runs at 4ghz.. Tested it with prime 95 torture test and cpu-z and it really is running at 3999.99 MHz and is completely stable..Tried most of the latest game like witcher 3, watchdogs, tomb raider, dying light and everything is completely stable and very fast.. Makes the processor I replaced this with (AMD fx6300) look like it was standing still... Lightroom 6.1 now runs smoothly even with 36MP files being edited with several layers.. And I'm really happy..So to sum up yes I would have preferred the K version and although it can easily reach 4.5-4.8ghz most people including myself wouldn't run it 24/7 at these speeds.. I probably would have settled for 4.2 ghz So 200mhz slower and saved myself £30. Not too shabby.. Oh and temps while stressing were 50-52C with a corasir H100. .

Many people think that you need an i7 if you're building a high end rig, but after doing some research, I found this to be false. I have this paired with a GTX 980 and there are no bottlenecks whatsoever. I also get an extra 5-10fps after overclocking my GTX 980, showing this CPU is easily capable of running even a 980ti or Titan X. I didn't get I5 4690k as it costs more, which pretty much eliminates the performance improvement you get form overclocking it, not to mention the fact the you would need a £20+ aftermarket cooler to prevent overheating from an overclock. The stock cooler on this works just fine, never going above 75 degrees Celsius even in the very demanding games like Crysis 3,or heavy benchmarks like 3d mark firestrike and Unigine Heaven/Valley. The stock cooler is also quiet, so I have never felt the need to change it, especially considering this is a non-k chip, meaning it can't be overclocked. In short, if you're just going to be gaming, don't get an i7, get this.

I've just used this i5 4690 CPU in a new build to replace my aged and much upgraded Q6600 based Dell Dimension 9200. The Dell was not a slow machine even in it's old age but the performance hike provided by an i5 4690 system is obvious in GUI speed and even mundane stuff like WP, email and web surfing. This new quad core cpu may be slightly overkill for a general purpose desktop but as current cpu design speeds are starting to top out because of the laws of physics I'm fairly certain my new i5 4690 will stay usable for good few years especially in a PC running Linux like mine.

It's an intel, decent for an I5. Like everyone else who's just upgraded their computer it feels fast.Comes with stock cooler which is fine for an unclockable(ish) processor and thermal paste pre-applied. I might upgrade this later but that would only really be for aesthetics as in a case with two intake fans and one exhaust mine has't got hotter than 57CNot much more to add really - don't go using Amazon reviews as your research when buying a processor :)

Haven't found anything yet that will raise the temperature of this CPU above 40C, even when playing today's games on ultra and watching 1080p video. Very impressed with it so far, I went with this one rather than the "k" variant because I have no intention to overclock, and 3.5Ghz seems fast enough anyway. Most I've seen with the turbo on is 3.87Ghz, although I'm not sure why because I wasn't running any programs.

Great cpu I put 5 stars because the cpu is great, fast and reliable, comes with stock cooler which I have used and is fine has I don't over clock. Only downside is that I had to wait so long for it to arrive and when it finally got here and I opened the box I found my cpu had changed into a wrist watch. But I must say I Amazons defence it was rectified quickly so a big thank you for that

CPU works great. Its fast in general and excellent for gaming. If the I7 seems too costly for you then perhaps this I5 would be better suited as its an excellent performer. As a person who used to run an AMD FX6300 I'd say just go straight to this I5 or the lower end I5's as from experience AMD is an absolute bottleneck in a lot of gaming scenarios.

19.10.2015

I use it for multitasking and medium gaming and some photo editing. Not a hitch, lightning fast, handles anything I throw at it. Great buy!Running quad core i5, with gigabyte Z97x mobo, 24Gb hyper-x fury ram, Asus navida GTX 750ti, cooler master v8 with 1 samsung evo ssd and 3HDDs and 2 optical drives in Thermatake urban S41 case.

19.12.2014

Great CPU, everything works really good, does not go above 60-70 degrees when playing some games with quite high requirements. From the very beginning I was using Cooler Master Hyper Evo 212 so I don't know how the stock cooler works but I'v heard it is not really good so I would recommend that you buy one as soon as possible.

Just to note that this looked like one for the Japaneses market (Japaneses instructions) hence why it is about £14 cheaper. So as long as you know what you are doing or can follow the pictures, then no problem.Got good Benchmark results that indicates my system is 4 times faster than the machine I built 18 months ago.

Great Processor. I upgraded from a Pentium G3258 as it was really struggling to run the more modern games such as Deus Ex. I installed this with a GTX 1060 and I can play it on High with just about everything Maxed and I'm getting a good 35 to 40 FPS. If you cant afford an I7 I would highly recommend this

25.9.2014

Goes like stink. Even using the on-board graphics, Minecraft plays smoothly on maximum distance. The supplied cooler is reasonably quiet, so I haven't felt the urge to buy some great finny monstrosity to keep the noise down.

Amazing CPU for gaming, didn't come with English paperwork (Mandarin)... I was not able to read any warranty information, this could be a problem for a first time builder who wants to check they are doing things right.
