Hi all,I recently bought this game as I have been a fan of the HoMM series ever since the first release of the original game back in the 90's.Now i'm pretty sure that many of you have been around review sites such as "Gamespot, IGN" etc, and they all seem to review this game very lowly, usually in the mid range 5/10 area. But I thought that after playing it myself and getting into the game I needed to correct this gross injustice. Now I can understand why they have critised it, because it is more or less the same as the others and only adds 1 new faction and they also commented on the campaign being so hard, but if you are like me I never played that anyway. Now in my eyes the game is alot better than Hammers of Fate, the original expansion, mainly because it adds the Stronghold race which are very unique and are very well made, they have some really amusing and enjoyable units. They also have added a third upgrade for all creatures in the game, which basically works along the lines that you have a choice of 2 upgrades with slightly different stats on each, but you can change the upgrade of any creature back and forth any time. This really does make the other factions playable and will refresh your interest with them. Now my only critisms are that there are not many new maps that have been added which is a real shame because its something that I was hoping for because I am getting slightly tired of the same old ones again and again. The second problem is that the AI seem to be too easy on normal but quite outrageous on hard there needs to be some balancing. The last problem is a small but annoying one for hardcore fans that they haven't actually released a new treant model which I was also hoping for as the current one is shocking, but someone off the forums has created the old beta treant to replace this with an effectively working 3rd upgrade! Nice no? Just search for "treants_ToE" and you should find it on the forums.I just wanted to post this review to give an enthusiast's view rather than a review site's.Hope this helps.

For those who know the HOMM series this was by far the best release to date. The new version is a stand-alone and does not require any previous games for playing as might seem from the title. You get additional 3rd unit upgrade, the new dwarf raze, new skills and abilities and even modification to the old ones (and I have to say the changes make real good sense eliminating old exploits) making the game very big in number of variables directly increasing the challenge. For those who do not know the series, it is clear a fantasy game with all the traditional razes (8 in total including the dwarfs, elves, humans and goblins) and each of them with completely different units and hence strategies.Additionally you have your heroes which are actually the generals of your armies with an impressive amount of abilities and attributes which will affect your armies combat stats and added to that you have the magic (coming from the heroes but also the units). All this skills are gained gradually when aquiring experience in battle as the usual role-playing games with level-ups, although this is not a first person game but an army land conquering game. The amount of features is difficult to describe, with own (chess like-turn based) combat system, treasures, incredible amount of artifacts, competition for resources positive and negative turn effects that will influence your strategy and a map generator giving endless replayability. The bad thing I see is the waiting time the pc takes for ai players to make their moves, becomes quite annoying really.Despite that the game is not just beautiful, intelligent and challenging but the best thing it has is that it is original. Usually pc-console games they made one game system and dozens of games come out with different labels and graphics but all are the same game. HOMM is unique and this makes it IMO a must try for pc strategy fans.

This really is a great expansion/ stand alone product. Everyone should own a Heroes game and if HOMM3 isn't it then this is. Out of 3,4 and 5 this is the only one of these I now play. The character development has been improved -and seems to be slightly simplified to be able to use, and you can find these skill wheels online for guidence (otherwise you will never get the ulitimate powers.).There is plenty of a new campaign for the expansion to complete which has a story but didn't seem all that interesting. Other improvements obviously include the additional upgrade for each creature.Generally speaking about the series playing multiplayer on the same pc is the way to go (preferably only 2players as you have to wait between turns)- just be weary that the only thing you get done today is amassing great heroes and armies to eventually take each other out (each time differently due to the different huge skill wheels that there are for each individual team).Easy to pick up, difficult to master- the golden phrase can be applied here. Making you forget about time is what this game/series does best, staying up till 3 to complete a mission (hence why best to play with somone else to warn you of the time).

I think this is last installment of series, and is more than just an extension. It seems to have better graphics (I use 1920 X 1080), plus extra features. The new "Tribes" are good fun, with own special abilities, and now two options of upgrade for same cost with different abilities, which makes it a bit more interesting. These alternative upgrades also available for all the other Hero types. I also really like the Caravan feature, which is added from Heros IV, but not in previous Heroes V games - this allows you to choose troops from remote buildings or other towns to be hired in a single town and automatically travel, thus saving a lot of time using heroes to transport troops as the neede arrises.I've been playing this game series since the begining and this is easily the best version. I also like this format of game, so highly recomend it, and for the price I paid, this is probably the best value entertainment I have ever had!
