As a fan of the books and the (excellent) TV series, I pre-ordered this game as I thought it would be worth checking out.Although it arrived on release day, I didn't get around to installing the game for more than a week, during which time I spotted some fairly critical reviews and began to worry that I'd bought a piece of rubbish. It was therefore with a certain amount of trepidation that I loaded it up last weekend and began playing it.It's possible (though unlikely) that the poor comments I saw had lowered my expectations (or that the 75 MB patch that downloaded when I checked for updates fixed problems that others may have had)but I think the game is excellent.Yes the graphics are more on a par with Dragon Age: Origins or Mass Effect 1 (or Knights of the Old Republic) than Skyrim but that's perfectly acceptable and doesn't detract from your enjoyment of the game. And yes, fights do have a bit of a consoley feel but the combat mechanic is fine. (You can pause combat to queue up actions (4 max) - power permitting - or just click on targets to use a basic attack).Levels / missions are also pretty linear (just like DA:O & ME, then) but, again, that's not a problem and variety is added by having the game flip you between playing 2 different characters and their respective stories. In another nice touch, the game lets one of the characters possess his pet war dog and roam around in canine form (essential for completing some missions where a human is too big to reach the objective).Once you get used to which buttons to click, (it's slightly counter-intuitive) the inventory management, item-equipping and trading screens are simple, clear and straightforward and the interface is generally good and easy to use (MUCH better than the default Skyrim PC user interface!).But what makes you want to keep playing this game is what has always made the difference between good & bad RPGs - the story - and this game does a great job of making you interested in the characters and their fates pretty much from the word go. Mors and Alester are both interesting and fun to play in different ways and their tales tick along nicely with plenty of roleplaying opportunities (spare the prisoner? / torture him for info? / kill him? - it's up to you) so that you can play the way you want to. There's also enough of a flavour of the Game of Thrones world here for fans to feel immediately engaged (even though you're not playing as a member of the Lannister or Stark family) and the story is neatly woven into and around known places and events from the books. Don't worry if you aren't familiar with the source material as enjoying the game doesn't depend on it).Experience with ME3 has taught me that you can't properly judge a game until you've finished it (!) but 10 hours in, I'd happily recommend this to anyone who has played and enjoyed similar games, from KotOR and Morrowind to ME3 and Skyrim

This game will get overlooked by many people which is a shame. For those who have the patience for it though you will be rewarded with one of the best stories to come out of a computer game in years. To anybody who isn't familiar the Song Of Ice & Fire world it's going to be pretty unforgiving in bringing you up to speed. The combat system which many are critical of is actually quite refreshing in my opinion. There's no ridiculous heavy armour ninjas drowning their adversaries with particle effects and 7ft meat cleavers, just a pause and queue system with semi-believable support, dps and tank maneuvers. In some ways it feels much more like RPG games from back in the day and maybe that is why the casual generation takes offense to it.In a way it often feels like the developers weren't sure if they wanted to appeal to an older PC audience or a wider console playing audience had they aimed for one or the other it may have been more successful. It's nothing special and it doesn't take any risks but it doesn't infuriate in the way that The Witcher's timed click system did for example. To me the the greatest flaw is the voice acting. The delivery, particularly by some of the key voice actors is shockingly bad and the direction of some of the cutscenes is no better. For the most part the events that unfold are believable and entertaining although there is a child birth scene at one point that produced an unintentional laugh out loud moment... Plop. The graphics are somewhat inconsistent with textures/models being generally poor with some well rendered exceptions standing out like sore thumbs. Some scenes look quite amateurish but then you'll go to a location like castle black and it's like a different team worked on it. With the PC version at least the usual Unreal Engine tweaks and forcing of supersampling can improve things to a degree. The story itself steals the show and you can tell George R.R. Martin had more than a little involvement. All the main characters have a lot of substance and from about ten hours in I couldn't put the damn thing down. It starts a little slow with two stories going back and forth between chapters with each chapter ending on a cliffhanger. As it progresses the combination of intrigues, back-stabs and indiscriminate culling of characters make it far less predictable than anything in recent memory. As it becomes clear the two protagonists' fates are finely interwoven the pace starts to really pick up and the last third of the game is as dark as it gets. I can't help but mention that Alistair who's character is a religious zealot is the spitting image of Mel Gibson. So much so that it might not be a coincidence lol.

I got this game at discounted price, so could take it or leave it. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Not having read the books or watched the television series, I found it very immersive. The fantasy setting is refreshing when compared to the usual stories or dwarfs, elves and orcs. It is more adult in style and there is quite a bit of 's***' and even one 'f*****g' in the dialogue, plus clues and missing people are often to be found in brothels; so not a game for your 13-year old brother. The combat style is different to other games I have played. I am not an expert at third-person hand-to-hand combat, but I could play it well enough that I was not slaughtered at every occasion. If you want to tougher, jack up the difficulty level. I like the different special attack and defence abilities you can 'buy' from the skill trees. At times you even get called upon to play as a dog which is interesting. You switch back and forth between two characters in successive chapters and I guess some players will find this frustrating. You can tailor them a bit, with three different combat styles for each of the characters, a range of strengths and weaknesses and skill trees. Neither character is wealthy and some players might find it frustrating having to save up to buy a decent sword or piece of armour. The graphics are sound, at times picturesque. There are a lot of people to encounter, with generally good voice acting, some will be familiar from television series. The accents are generally from different regions of the UK and Ireland, rather than the USA.If you want a fast slaughtering game, this is not for you. You often have to make moral judgements which have consequences for how others behave towards you subsequently. There are lots of cut scenes which you have some control over, but I imagine some people would be bored with them. Thus, this game may appeal more to people 30+ years old plus who are looking for a story which draws them in. However, this may discourage you to replay the game.Overall, I enjoyed becoming immersed in this game, which I imagine will be best liked by older gamers. Certainly if you want to rush through a game, and skip all the exposition and moral judgements, then this is not for you. If you like something a little different, then give it a try, especially at the prices it is falling to.

Many of the negative reviews of this seem to be from people who didn't play all that far into the game. That's understandable because the narrative takes a long, long time to get going properly and I found that, in the first 6 chapters or so, the quests were largely predictable and repetitive - and the overall development of the action and narrative are too slow-paced (not entirely unlike certain of Martin's novels, some might say...). To be honest I almost gave up on the game at various points because it just wasn't proving interesting enough. It was well worth sticking with it, though, because, between a third and half way through, the whole thing picks up in intensity, intrigue and action - and the story itself,as many others have pointed out, really comes into its own. In fact I'd go as far as to say that the story is stunningly good for this sort of a game. There are still some weaknesses - most of the times when you are 'searching' for things or people, the route you need to take is made unnecessarily obvious, there are some rather embarrassing graphics failures in places and there are quite a lot of rather similar fights one after another and, yes, the voice acting is fairly dreadful at times (though this is hardly unusual).Yet the further I got, the less these things bothered me. The fighting became more interesting/challenging as more abilities were unlocked, the point and purpose of primary quests became far clearer as the story started to unfold at greater pace and because of these things overall intensity and enjoyment eventually were strong. And the ending is excellent.

Like many people who have bought this game I'm a fan of the a song ice and fire books and the hbo tv series, if you like them too then buy the game the story stays on track with then with many twists and turns lots of intrigue and treachery, you will also see many place like the wall and kingslanding that bring you in to the world one of the best parts for me was morr's journey in the gift a dark overgrown forest with the isolated moles town it was very atmospheric all it lack was some dark mysterious music it make you feel tense, as for the combat at first I was disappointed by the almost turn based system be used to the free flow of other games but as the game continued and I bought bettergear and got more attack skill I began to like it and I felt it fitted the game well it still had problems if you are in a fight and you knock someone down even main bosses you can effectively keep doing this make some fights worthless also if the enermy has crossbowmen or archers with them you have to focuse on them as arrow do much more damage then other games lastly I could not find a way to make my other characters to use special attacks so I had to just keep queueing attack for them, but for the most partif you look at the fights more strategically You can enjoy the combat, in all I feel the game was good it stuck to the story well and really was deep it's characters where likeable villains give really reasons to hate them the combat could have been better but I found it to get better later was you get more used to it I hope for a future game.

There may be a 'fan factor' at work here, as I've spent some time immersed in George Martin's Westeros prior to buying this game... so my review may not be completely impartial.True, as others have commented; the graphics are not cutting edge. They are adequate though, and the environment created in this game actually feels quite true to the books / film. The 'sets' in some places are actually quite jaw-dropping (Kings Landing). The story is (for an RPG) quite intricate, and ties in quite well with the 'feel' of the books, as well as the storyline in 'Game of Thrones'. The cameo of the author was amusing too.Though it has also come in for some criticism,I quite liked the battle system; blending as it does an element of real-time with an element of turn-based. Queuing up complimentary moves between your player characters (and the warg!) to maximise your edge in battle is quite rewarding.I've done all four endings now, and not even a whiff of Disney. Very dark indeed, and better for it.In summary, I'll give this four stars. If I hadn't just played LA Noir and Red Dead Redemption it would get five. Finishing it has left me a little bereft, as good games should.Shame they couldn't resolve one of the four endings to leave an 'open-world' game, like the above mentioned titles... perhaps blending in an element of 'Risk', so to speak - you you could participate in the chaos after Robert Baratheon's denouement, call the banners etc... Maybe I just want the moon on a stick.

Ok so this game has had some good reviews and very bad reviews. It could have been better but over all its not a bad game. First of all its not Skyrim, dragon age, balders gate or any of them its more a hibrid of lets say dragon age as far as combat and world map is concerned. risen where the graphics and voice acting are concerned. If you are expecting a game of player customization this game does not have it, unless you count being able to choose what you wear or which weapons you use. It does take a little while to get used to but most games do, at first i thought "have i made a mistake buying this game" but i didnt make a mistake after an hour of playing I was hooked. The story follows 2 people, you will do a chapter as 1 then the next as the other then switch over again from what iv seen so far, i wont go anymore into it for spoilers, you will meet and interact with people from the series and books. The combat starts out slow but as you level up you become faster as do your enemies. My advice is save often. The choices you make through the game affect things later on, much like dragon age and in some ways Risen, but again this is a game of its own.Over all this is a good game, if you are a fan of the series or books then buy it, you will love it, if not then again buy it but my advice is watch the series so you know what people in the game are talking about. Give it time i cant stress that enough. If you are a Skyrim fan boy then remember not every game is skyrim.

This is an RPG of the like that hasnt been seen for years, the only comparison being the Witcher. It has grey moral choices, twists, choice repercussions it is a very well written story that kept me hooked. It does not treat you like a fluffy bunny where people of the world are either good or bad. I kept thinking it was going to end but no there was more! brilliant. I like that there are actually items to pick up and that change your characters appearance, rather than the recent idea some rpg's have had of "dont need an inventory thats too complicated". If you have read the books, this game is a must,it lets you be a part of the universe the books have created.Ok the graphics do seem a little dated, and apart from the main characters the voice acting is slightly off but combat is enjoyable and challenging, and the puzzles and "errand" running running are actually entertaining rather than a chore. For the price it is well worth it if you want a good story. If your of the hack and slash type maybe not for you.One of the best games ive played, but then i play because i enjoy a good Tale.

After reading many of these reviews I thought the game was going to be terrible, I was undecided and only really bought it because I was missing the books and TV series. However, anyone who has enjoyed the song of ice and fire saga will surely enjoy this, especially if you like RPG games. It has a very engaging storyline as you would expect. The combat system is a refreshing change from most other games I've played; especially when you get used to it. Also not all the choices are quite so obviously 'good and bad' as in other games.Although the graphics don't stand up to many current games, it is still a pleasure to explore Westeros and meet characters you recognise. If you're a fan of the Game of Thrones series and games in general then you'll enjoy this game.If you've never heard of game of thrones before this and you're looking for a game to play like you played Skyrim then go away, watch it on TV or read some books, then come back to buy this.

If you are a fan of the Song of Ice and Fire Novel series or the Game of Thrones HBO series and are also a fan of CRPG's then I recommend you give this game a try.The game may not be to the high standards of The Witcher 2 or Dragon Age but it is still a fun game. The graphics are decent enough but the it's the story that really steals the show and just like the Novels and TV Series has you guessing and wanting to know what happens next. The game is rough around the edges admittedly but it is not anywhere near as bad as many review on the web are suggesting. If you are willing to forgive it for it's faults, such as erratic voice acting and rough graphics there is fun and deep RPG to be enjoyed here set within the rich and brilliant fantasy world or George RR Martin.

If your expecting tv series stlye acting and voicing then this isnt the game for you. However if your after a genuininely fun game that challanges and has a good story plot thick with well loved characters and the famous backstabbing youve seen in the tv series. The Story is well worked with the tv series both in detail (house names, history, locations characters) to giving you a sense of injustice when something bad happens to someone you like.Overall this game is fun, true to the tv series, boils up all kinds of emotions while playing and challanging, if it had better voice acting and grpahics this would possibly game of the year

I bought this game after getting into the tv series.I wasn`t dissapointed. The graphics are a little dated but to be expected on a two year old release. The game play is intense and reminds me of Dragon Age Origins. The pre rendered scenery is great. The music is epic. You play two characters whose stories advance the main plot together.A Red Wizard/Priest and a member of the Nights Watch. The story is detailed and immersive if a little linear.I enjoyed playing this game and thought it well worth the money i paid.

The universe George R.R. Martin created certainly is one of the best I've read in recent years and this game manages to capture a hint of that universe and delivers hours of fun entertainment, yet it makes you work hard for it. It is a wonderful game provided you can get past it's problems, if you manage to get past that it will deliver big time.Even with the bugs and annoying things I will rate it with 5 stars, just because, well it's the seven kingdoms with a great story, even if slow at times.

23.2.2014

Haveing had read all the game of thrones books this game really expands on the got universe. It's great to hear and see the likenesses of the actors from the tv series as well. If you like game of thones all the collectables and story references are brilliant. As for gameplay itself it's not a hack and slash button bashed its a rather slow turn based strategie based combat. Different from what I usually play but it has a certain unique quality.

This game may go under the radar as been a lame book/tv tie in but it would be a mistake to think that!...the game play is much like dragon age origins (not a bad thing!). You have a wheel to choose you comments from when talking ans is all spoken!. Combay again is the sameish a D.A.O you can input 3 attacks etc for your guy to carry out then add more. Graphics i though were ok, no frame rate issues that i noticed and ran very smooth.
