As someone who’s an old trainspotter, but not a raving Thomas fan, I’m probably the wrong person to review this, but here goes.It does everything the description says, and it’s well-made, so I’ll look at the authenticity instead.I suspect that Stephen is a TV creation, rather than an Awdry original, but brief research suggests that he (Stephen) has been subject to some changes of appearance. One fan site says: “Some merchandise lines depict him with his old black funnel.” Here he certainly has the newer funnel (white with a gold crown on top), but it’s just a short chimney, not the tall one that Stephen has (and of course the Rocket on whom he is based). I fear this has been done only to avoid larger packaging.Another lack of verisimilitude is the huge piston; Youtube clips show this connected to the driving wheel and moving, but this one is static. Sad anorak, you say? Yes indeed, but children have sharp eyes too.Note that the required two AA batteries are not included.

To get the most out of this you will need to get some of the trackmaster sets of rails to go with it. Which is where it starts to get a bit expensive. We already had a builder bucket which was just over £30, which works out a bit cheaper per piece than a set circuitous track. I am now going to have to get some additional track as the Thomas empire is gradually increasing in size.Initially, I thought the train was broken as it was missing the arm that joins the front wheels, but it is supposed to be that way. The train itself is well built and will take a little rough and tumble. The carriages hook together with some ease, but younger ones may need some assistance. This set has a little more interaction than the others in the range in that a button press on the passenger carriage make it look like the passengers have left. My only criticism is that around £20 (current price) value for money is not the best, but it seems to be the price for these timeless classics.

This is a lovely little battery powered toy train. Whilst it could technically be played with stand alone, it is intended to be used with the Fisher Price Thomas and Friends Track Master railway system. This is just something to bear in mind for those who don’t already own some of the track sets, which are of course sold separately!!The character is ‘Stephen’ who is inspired by the famous Stephenson’s Rocket locomotive (essentially the first practical steam train to be used commercially). You get the locomotive, its tender and a passenger carriage. There is a button on top of the carriage which can be used to simulate the passengers being dropped off (i.e they disappear from the carriage windows). The train is battery powered and quite quick. 2 AAA batteries are required, but are not included.Overall, this is a good quality toy for 3+ year old children who are into their trains and / or Thomas the Tank Engine.

Excellent item, comes in 3 pieces; train, coal and barrel wagon and passenger carriage.Press the grey top on the blue passenger carriage for passengers or no passengers (I didn't know, mg son showed me).Explaining the name "the Rocket and how he's actually older than Hiro (a different train in the "Thomas" universe) and various details about how Stephensons Rocket worked and what it meant to steam locomotives everywhere.A very good item to teach parts of a train to a child (or in my case, by my son).Runs on easy to buy batteries, compared to the older versions of Thomas trains, which had big clunky ones. Also batteries quite secure and batteries won't keep getting removed etc,as the top of the train is secured to the bottom with clasp like security pieces and a screw.Excellent item ?Read full review...

I can't for sure. I've been reading Thomas books since *I* was a small kid and always sad that there wasn't one with my name. Then a few years ago along comes Stephen and I'm delighted! Loosely, very loosely, based on Stephenson's Rocket, he's the oldest engine in the Thomas books. Runs on trackmaster track, just about on wooden track; this motorised Stephen will be a great addition to anyone's collection. The carriage has a neat trick - push down on the top and the people disappear, push again and they come back. Really liked that and fooled the real kid for a time. Get this for your three year old and then take them to the Science Museum* to see the real thing!*Think the real Rocket is currently in Manchester Science Museum (7/19)rather than South Kensington while it normally resides.

A lovely toy train, in bright colours as per the photos here. It requires 2 AAA batteries not supplied in the box, easy to put in underneath the train via a screw (using a Phillips screwdriver) the lever on top of the train easily pushes to make the wheels turn. It’s quiet and would go on a track or carpet. My grandson is 4 and will love playing with Runaway Stephen along with his detachable yellow coal truck, and a passenger carriage which has a press button on top to magically put passengers inside or empties the carriage by pressing the button, perfect for little ones imaginations. I’ve added a few photos, I hope my review helps you,I’d happily recommend it as Fisher-Price always make quality toys my own children had over 30 years ago.

My daughter was Thomas mad when she was little, we had to go to see him every time he came to the station near where we lived. She now has a little boy who has just started to play with his toys and Stephen is just the thing. Bright colours, wheels, little passengers and a button to press. I have to say Stephen has gone from my memory bank, we had Thomas and Diesel and I think 2 coaches called Annie and Clarabelle (can't remember) and a few others, Henry comes to mind as being slightly 'cheerful'. If Stephen is a new addition he is very well received and if I have forgotten him I apologise. Great toy and very sturdy, a bit expensive but if it lasts years works out better. You get what you pay for.

This Thomas the Tank Engine (Stephen) toy arrived well packaged and came with two carriages for the train to pull. The colour is bright and vibrant and the plastic seems to be of good quality, with nice seals between the joints and surfaces. This requires batteries to work, so make sure you get some in ready. This can be used on the Master Track system that Thomas the Tank Engine make and the passenger carriage has a nice feature where you can push a button on top and 'drop' the passengers off and then pick them up again afterwards. This is a fun set that can be used with existing Master Track systems and if you are a fan of Thomas the Tanks engine, this will be right up your street/track!

TrackMaster toys let children build a custom-made motorised railway with connectable track sets and their favourite Thomas & Friends characters. Kids can race with friends and have a fun time.In this item you get Stephen. Flip the switch to see stephen race along on exciting, motorized journeys as he pulls his cargo car and his passenger coach. My nephew was thrilled to add this to his Thomas collection and plays with it for hours on end!It is such a good quality product and will last for years. This is a nice big train and will be suitable as a birthday or Christmas present.Highly recommend this toy.

Stephen the train came in 3 sections, the train front / engine and 2 carriages. Each section can be removed so you can tow just the one carriage or just have Stephen on its own. I wish this item was a die cast metal but being a kids toy the plastic is adequate enough. I was expecting the size to be pretty small but on arrival it was a great length and my 4 nearly 5 year old nephew absolutely loves it. I’m guessing the manufacturer also sells tracks and set for the trains to go on, but you have just as much fun on a hard surface. Really nice little toy 5*

This is another must for any collector of Thomas. We already have other track master stuff, which the kids love. There is also a button on the top of the carriage to pretend to drop passengers and pickup passengers which is nifty and interesting for them to play with and encourage imagination.I think its a really good value series overall for the build quality and the interactivity and engaging potential it seems to create. A really traditional, but engrossing toy that seems to be part of a firm favourite of Thomas based things.

Our youngest loves this. It’s not cheap at around £20 but it does come in nice packaging and comes with three sections. It needs a couple of AA batteries (not included - boo!). We don’t have the track for it yet but it works perfectly well on our laminated floor and our son adores it. Well be investing in some of the other characters no doubt (there are nine of them). It says 3 and above although I’m not sure it’s robust enough for a 3 year old, maybe a year or two older than that. Recommended.

Brilliant quality and price. The kids really enjoy playing with Stephen and it also had some fun little extra that were a really good surprise. It came beautifully packaged and was bigger than I had expected. The kids really love Thomas and his friends, so when I gave them this they were over the moon. It’s battery operated and those batteries are not included. Amazing as a gift or a treat.

TrackMaster is a new motorised collection from Thomas and Friends. It's very cute, well made, great materials and colours. As expected, doesn't fit any other tracks but Track Master, but the collection includes a great glow in the dark track set and other motorised engines, so could make a very exciting present for a Thomas enthusiast.

Super happy with this Stephen. I didn't realise there was a button on the carriage pleasantly surprised my son loves pressing the button and pretending he has dropped his passengers off at the castle and press the button and picks them up again. Lovley train would recommend this Stephen to any thomas fan
