When I was given the opportunity to review this my immediate reaction was "where's the matching salt grinder?". My conclusion is that this pepper grinder is very nice, does the job well, but actually is not necessarily something for the dining table.Let me explain what I mean here - I use pepper grinders at home in both the kitchen and at the dinner table, as well as ground pepper in a jar for cooking. When eating at the table, I'm quite happy with it being a coarse ground and we have a set with a matching salt grinder which looks fine. In the kitchen though, I use one of those supermarket spice jars which has a pepper grinder on it - it's not very comfortable to hold, gets quite grubby and is very coarse in its grind. Therefore we need a second pre-ground pepper which is much finer. For salt, I don't like salt grinders for cooking generally. The clever feature of this grinder is there is a scale of six grinds from fine to coarse. Frankly I think it is over-the-top and three would be sufficient, but having the fine grind is really nice for soups and means we won't use jarred ground pepper any more for that (as well as replacing the current grinder). It's not perfect and you do get some coarser stuff at the fine level and fine stuff at the coarse level but that's not really a problem in my opinion. The mechanism seems quite robust, it's a decent size (a little over 20cm in height) and the top comes off by pulling it from a rubber sleeve. You don't need a lot of force to do that, so children visiting looking to cause a mess and lots of sneezing have a good chance here.Overall for the kitchen, I think this is a really good grinder, and probably a nice gift as it is perhaps quite expensive for you to indulge in for yourself. I'm not convinced by it for the dinner table. It's a little too easy to open, it doesn’t have a matching salt grinder, and frankly the multiple levels of grind is a bit pretentious at a dinner table if you ask me.

Cole and Mason have been producing mills for salt and pepper since 1946. Since the mid - noughties the company has been part of the DKB Group of companies which also market kitchen goods under the Ken Hom and Jamie Oliver names, among a number of others. This particular mill is a new addition to the C&M range. It is a quality product which looks and feels good. It has 6 settings which enable you to dispense pepper from very fine to quite coarse - although if truth be told even at the finest setting some coarse grains escape and vice - versa. I'm not sure why you would need so many settings as I would have thought that that fine, medium and coarse would have sufficed - but there is something reassuring in the fact that the manufacturer's have gone to the trouble. It gives a sense of attention to detail. The grinding mechanism seems to be robust and should last for years and the mill is easy to fill and keep clean. The dark beech wooden finish is elegant and adds a touch of sophistication which will enhance any dinner table.I have noted that some vine voices have been critical of the fact that their mill arrived wrapped in bubble wrap but I suspect that if you purchased it under normal circumstances it will come attractively packaged in manner befitting the quality of the product.Reassuringly expensive and would make a great gift to give or receive (for people with an interest in cooking or entertaining).

This Cole and Mason Pepper Grinder is a great idea with a novel and easy to use dispenser guide that lets you choose the size of the pepper particles, while also looking classy on your table or kitchen unit. The wooden design stands out, which may be good or bad depending on how your kitchen matches to the dark wood design (or whether you're bothered by this!) Personally, the stainless steel matched our kitchen and the wooden parts certainly don't look out of place, either way it looks very well made. The grinding mechanism is smooth and easy to use with the indicator below the bottom steel strip designed to be easy to read in order to get the right sized grains by twisting left or right. With larger grains you do get smaller ones coming out as well, usually after you've used it previously for small grains, but that's to be expected. There are 6 different settings in all.The unit also came with pepper in and this was actually good quality pepper with a slightly lemony aroma. Refilling is also easy with just a twist of the lid. With no matching salt dispenser, we tend to use this just for cooking and for the odd occasion where it's more convenient to choose the size of the grains that come out. We've used it on home made french bread pizza, too. It works well in any situation, though and is always on hand in our kitchen.

Technically, one should not provide such vulgarity to guests as salt and pepper, as it would be an insult to the chef implying that the food is not already adequately seasoned. But then I don’t live in Downton Abbey so I’m not that fussed!Normally there is enough salt in my dishes either directly or via other forms of stock before they reach the table, but pepper is an acquired taste and that’s where having a nice pepper mill to put on the table can add a nice touch to a dinner party. We have a couple of cruet sets, all from Cole & Mason. I particularly like ones which have a clean flat top to them so you don’t inadvertently loosen the device as you are working it - which one of the sets I have does seem to do.This “Oldbury Gourmet” pepper mill has no such flaw and is nice to operate. It features a variable grind density from rough to fine which do make a noticeable difference, and is a nice surprise to friends who weren’t expecting such a choice from something as simple as a pepper mill. This mill looks very stylish in it’s dark wood with silver accents, and it is nicely constructed. At £34 (at time of review) it is fairly pricey for a single pepper mill, but if it fits with your table environment then it can provide an elegant detail that might make all the difference.

A very nice, medium size Pepper Mill, that is not too big - you see do see some huge ones that are really only suited to restaurants. But at about 7" tall, this is not too small either and would suit most households. It is finished in a very pleasing natural wood, with prominent grain and stainless steel head - with an embossed P for Pepper on the top. There is another brushed steel band near the bottom, which can be turned to give various levels of grind - from fine to coarse. This is quite stiff, but no problem - it's very easy to see the black marker pointing to the varying sizes of granularity. It feels solid and exudes quality - the grinding mechanism works well and it's obviously designed to last. The top pulls off easily to add more pepper corns and the whole process is simplicity itself and intuitive. It has a classic look that isn't out of place on the dining table or the kitchen and I can't imagine how this could be improved upon, apart from being part of a set for condiments. It's not flashy or futuristic, but this is a high quality item that just does the job exceptionally well. Highly recommended.

This is a solidly made, apparently reliable, 'hand-draulic' pepper grinder. The traditional construction is comfortable and tactile in use. It would make a great gift for a wedding. My original wedding present one, looking rather like this version, lasted until our silver anniversary.I have become exasperated with battery operated ones which always seem to let you down eventually by spilling their guts over the dinner table. They are of necessity heavier and more awkward, despite the electrical mechanisation of the process. It is great to have a grown up, self sufficient grinder with six 'gourmet precision' levels of fine, medium fine, medium and coarse available to use.Simple to fill with fresh peppercorns by opening the top. Some good advice is given, which is to ensure you always buy good quality pepper corns, they are not all equal. The video above, made by the manufacturers Cole and Mason, is really helpful, it is all you need to help you use the machine to best advantage, demonstrating the operation of the pepper grinder quite clearly.

The look and feel of the outside of this pepper grinder is very good - lovely dark wood with classy stainless steel top and lower band. Top marks for style.Sizewise, this is a very nice example - not too big but feels solid and well made.Cole & Mason have a good name for their products so you would expect all the above. Time will tell on the build quality but so far so good. The lower band has a scale of fineness from coarse to very fine. Again this seems to work well, although 6 different grades seems a bit OTT - I suspect most will go for high, low or in between...?Filling is easy - pull off the top and fill with peppercorns.Perhaps too good for the kitchen, but a high quality product for the table.Negative points - at the price, a presentation box would seem warranted. The instructions are virtually non existentand it is so small a magnifying glass would be needed in any case! The text is black on silver - I wish manufacturers would just give clear instructions in black and white!

Good solid pepper grinder with a "cunning" size scale.Smart looking pepper grinder - but will live in our kitchen rather than on the dining table. We have a VERY old pepper grinder that my wife was given before we got married (several decades ago) which is still working OK - but is a bit arthritic, and the screw top does keep falling off into the saucepan! This should make a good replacement. This new one has a top that snaps on (quite tight to get off - but probably a Good Thing)... so no more inadvertent splashes in the pan.The idea with this new grinder is that it has a scale from small to large - so that you can control the size of pepper pieces - and this is what attracted it to me in the first place. This does seem to work ...ish.The small setting does mean you don't get big pieces, but the larger setting means you get a variety of sized bits - which I suppose if fair enough.Very nice looking, pleasant to handle, and very suitable for our kitchen needs.

Unlike most pepper grinders, this has 6 preset levels from you to choose from depending on what you need. Coarse for rubs down to a fine for general seasoning. While the coarse is very course (barely cracks the peppercorns) the fine may not be fine enough for some people. Unlike those grinders with continual adjustment, there is no screw to lose or unscrew too much and it all falls apart. The adjustment is made by turning a brushed steel collar to whichever setting you want. A certain amount of experiment is needed to get use to the levels. The grinder is operated by a large brushed steel knob that pulls off with firm pressure for refilling. Love it or hate it, peppercorns are already in it so it's ready to go.This does mean you can practice but personally I'd replace them from a sealed packet when using on food.To me it looks a very elegant piece that will stand up to plenty of use . Just need the matching salt mill too.

I have really warmed to this simple, well designed kitchen appliance. The shape of the pepper pot means it is very easy to hold, fitting exceptionally well into the hand. The dark wood is exceptionally smooth, and combined with the stainless steel rim band and top makes it very easy on the eye. The discreet “P” on the top leaves no confusion as to whether you have picked up a salt mill by mistake.Compared to my old pepper mill, this is far easier to fill with peppercorns, with no fiddly screw top to contend with, just pull of the bottom, which has a snug fit. The fact that there are 6 different grinding options is very useful, and very easy to select the desired one. I like the coarsest for topping salads and pasta, and the finest for adding to soups, stews and general cooking. I have no quibbles with this appliance, and I feel it is well worth the price for something that I will use umpteen times a day. Recommended

This pepper mill is AMAZING! the quality and precision you would expect from Cole & Mason and it doesn't disappoint. Incredibly stylish and functional pepper mill that will look fab in any style kitchen. I thought the 6 different sizes was a bit of a gimmick but it is actually quite good fun and a bit of a table conversation maker. I like a medium setting and my son likes the biggest setting. The pepper tends to 'Rush' out in all settings but I think this is due to the high quality. We have been used to a cheap alternative that never works and makes a mess. The C&M is superb. It comes pre-filled with pepper corns but to refill simply pull hard on the top and it comes off.It grinds with ease and does not make a mess on the underneath. The price is off putting but if you can afford it, it is indeed worth every penny. Would make a great gift for the discerning chef. Now where's the salt version?.....

This is an upmarket elegant pepper mill. The look and feel, together with the operation looks first class. I like the weight in the hand and the grinder choice to select the particle size from fine to coarse. It comes filled with peppercorns and looks stunning. It is expensive for a pepper mill, but it does have a lifetime warranty and it is from a well established and respected brand. My biggest gripe is that it just comes in bubble wrap. For this price I was expecting it to be in a nice presentation box as it would make an ideal present, now it just looks like I am resifting an item as there is no box. It may be as it is free gift for review, it did not come in a box, but if that is the case, then it should have been noted as such. If it does come with a box, then I will adjust the stars accordingly. Anyone know if the retail version is actually boxed?

I'm thrilled to bits with this and have used it nearly every day. I've been eating a lot more scrambled egg and carbonara! It stands at 19cm tall and feels very solid and substantial. The twister at the top is metal, as is a dial near the base which can be twisted to vary the amount of grinding and thus how fine the pepper is. Both can be twisted effortlessly; I have experienced no jamming or resistance from either. For loading pepper, the top twister is pulled off which requires moderate effort and a good grip, so an elderly person might struggle with this. It usefully came loaded with a generous amount which is still going strong.I'm so impressed with the overall quality that I am checking out other Cole & Mason products.Cheaper alternatives will do just as good a job but this is just an absolute pleasure to use and is clearly built to last.

I loved this grinder from the moment I took it from the package. It just looks so elegant with its walnut stained beech wood and its stainless steel cap and ring further down the shaft that it is suitable for table or kitchen. The cap has a P on it to differentiate from the salt (I think I must get the one for salt) The stainless feel ring is discreetly marked Cole and Mason andis actually the grinding mechanism with 6 grades. As it came ready filled I was able to try these grades immediately and for my own use I think I will use 1 or 6 most but it is good to have such a choice. It is shaped so that it fits nicely into my hand. Filling is easy, just pull cap off and fill. I love it,not only is it useful but would grace any table

We have the the pepper grinder sister to this mill and have been very impressed with its quality after 2 years of use, so decided to buy the salt version.Being a very keen cook, grinder mills for salt and pepper are a bone of contention for me and the bane of my life.So many are useless or disintegrate after a few months. But Cole and Mason produce a premium product and I am very happy with the design and build quality. Easy to fill, well made, stylish and with a good range of adjustment for coarseness of grind. The pepper mill is still silky smooth in operation and working well after 2 years, so I have high hopes for the salt mill. Use medium sized salt crystals for the best results
