There I was minding my own business watching cricket on the telly and a courier knocks on the door, struggling to carry a parcel. I didn't order anything, but I know someone who might have, so I opened it. We have a new kitchen and bathroom, and it took me a few seconds to register (there was a wicket in the cricket, so my mind was on that). Both rooms need tiling and I was all in favour of getting a man in to do it. "Now you don't have to" was her comment when I saw my new tile cutter. Apparently it's 'my' tile cutter. Not 'hers' or 'ours', but mine, so I knew what I would be doing for the next week even though I'm a DiY accident waiting to happen.The first thing to know is that this is a bit of a beast.Yes, you can get smaller and cheaper tile cutters but there tends to be a reason why they're priced as they are, but that doesn't mean everything is top notch with this cutter, of which more later. This is such a monster that it has two carrying handles and a press on stud strap to prevent it coming apart when transported. Unlike many other cutters, this has a separate locking lever, which holds the tile in place by means of pushing down on the handle so the hook is under the base plate. Once you've aligned your tile and done this, score and break it. Easy.This is the PTC 470, which denotes the maximum tile size of 470mm (there is also a 640 version but both have a 12mm maximum tile thickness) and it can also cut at an angle of anything up to 45º, but I have yet to try this. When used with fairly large tiles, it works like a dream but not everyone wants larger tiles. Now, this might be in the 'Rolls Royce' box of tile cutters but when it comes to cutting small tiles (I tried it on some 100×100mm I have for the bathroom) or thin slices from any size tile, it suffers badly. There are two reasons for this:1. The black surface is springy so when the breaking stamp is pushed down to split the tile, there doesn't seem to be enough reverse force to ensure it breaks.2. Both the breaking stamp and locking lever are too big. You can't cut off anything less than about 20mm as the locking lever covers the first 15mm of a tile, so the footprint of the stamp isn't big enough to create any down force to break.At least I can get the kitchen done, though I'm going to have to find a way round the part tiles needed in the bathroom. I guess that's one of the advantages an electric cutter has. I'll still give a four as it's obviously meant for the larger tile. Mind you, it's going to be a bugger to store. Damn you Bosch!

Having seen a Bosch tile cutter at work (ok so not same model but one before it) when had some work done at home, fireplace ripped out and redone along with slate hearth tiles all behind wood burner and that. Then offered the chance to try this out immediate thought was going to make bathroom tiling easier. Well the cutting part of them at least. Starting small though, replacing a couple of tiles in shower and kitchen first that needed doing so giving this a test before the big bathroom job.Thankfully a safe item to use even if it does look like an instrument of torture. Previous one we had was a larger square shape, difficult to hold when moving it for use from garage to outside.For ease of use and storage this wins hands down. It feels solid and not flimsy and looks like it should last a long time, even if you only use it every now and again as when doing a big tiling job and it finished then no more need until the next tiling job or replacement of broken, cracked ones. As OH says "great gadget for cutting them, anyone now for doing the tiling, a machine for that next please".So far only smaller tiles, smooth surface ones used, for replacing a couple in shower along with kitchen worktop ones and it cut them clear, no breaks, ragged edges and so easy. I say easy I just watched as OH did it. It will really come into its own in a few months when bathroom overhauled and different textured tiles etc will be needed to be cut. Flooring and wall tiles so should be interesting to see the results with the floor tiles. Previously used another shops own make for doing slate flooring and that was good for the rougher textured tile but worn out after doing a hall of it and not worth buying any replacement bits for it. At least with this Bosch cutter replacement bits easily sourced.So far so good and can understand why the builders have this make thrown into the back of their vans as they seem so robust this make of machine. Will update review when bathroom tiling all done, but first thought it does make the tile cutting quicker work.

This review is via my other half for whom this arrived just in time as he had been putting off these tiling jobs for ages now!First impressions out of the box, it looked like a quality piece of kit and had convenient carry handle slots either side of it for easy transportation.In actual use, here are the comments my husband made; ( we used it on both ceramic tiles, and also terracotta tiles)Very easy to use; You just place your tile flush against the guide edges and then secure it in place using the steel clamping rail. This keeps the tile in position so it doesn't move when you cut.The rail is spring mounted so it automatically adjusts to the thickness of whatever tile you're using,and there are also spring based support pads on both sides of the cutter to prevent chipping.Next slide the titanium coated cutting wheel along the tile, there is a support handle which makes it very easy to grip, and the wheel slides over the tile with very little effort to score the tile.Unlike other cutters apparently, with this one there is no need to reposition the tile to break it, and no need to make any adjustments to the cutter, you just fold down the breaking stamp and the tiles break perfectly cleanly. We must have done a couple of dozen tiles this afternoon and each and everyone was cut perfectly!I was relieved to note that the moving parts are protected with a transport safety lock, and so glad this tiling job is finally underway, no more excuses from the husband!Incidentally, this model cuts tiles up to 470mm long, there is also a larger model, the 620, which can cut tiles up to 620mm long.

This came in a huge box but actually due to the fact that the handle folds down it's not that big to store, though it is heavy due to all the bits being really robust and designed to tackle the job of cutting tiles well. The bed is solid metal and all the the cutting blade is titanium coated, and the bed which the tile goes onto is well spring loaded.To use it you place your tile (up to 470mm, hence the name), which can be up to 12mm thick onto the bed and you use the guides and rulers to work out where to cut. Cutting is a simple matter of pushing forward and then down so that two stamps on it push the scored tile down and break it.Once you've worked out how to use it - not necessarily a piece of cake for the "DIY averse but needs must" like those in this house,it's fairly easy to use and, as you can hopefully see below, it cuts tiles at angles as well as straight, leaving straight edges. The instructions seem to assume you know what you are doing (we didn't) and are fairly concise and rely heavily on pictures.The downside to this cutter, which I think could realistically be used by the DIY keen person to tile a whole room, rather than do a small repair as we did, is that if you want to just cut a very small strip you are going to struggle - it just doesn't really work under 4cm or so, so you'd have to score it and break it in some other way than with the cutter.All in all a good piece of kit if you have the need and I would recommend.

Prior to purchasing this I did quite a bit of research as it seems there's some pretty iffy tile cutters out there. Sure I could have just gone ahead and bought a £35 cheapy from B&Q but I've been caught out too many times by that sort of false economy. Considered hiring one but then you're stuck with rushing the job if you're to avoid paying the same sort of money that would buy a pro cutter. This Bosch tile cutter seemed to get good reviews and I was not let down at all. It's a big bit of kit mind and overall it is robust and very well constructed. It oozes quality and invokes a sense of confidence when you're using it. Used it for cutting kitchen floor tiles and EVERY single cut was accurate and clean,and even very thin cuts close to the edge of a tile came off as sharp as you like. Watched a number useful How To videos on YouTube first (Tommy's Trade Secrets / Tommy's Yard is a good site) to get an idea of how much pressure to use. So although it was reasonably expensive, this cutter proved to be an excellent buy. I'll be using it to do the bathroom later in the year and I'm confident that if I feel I don't need to hang on to it, I'll get a decent price for it on eBay and recover much of the original outlay. Cracking bit of kit.

This tool arrived in a very large box and, although the device is smaller than that might lead you to expect it will still take up some real shelf space. The tile cutter will cut tiles 470 x 470 mm but beware – it cannot cut natural materials such as stone, marble, slate, etc.The instructions for use are laid out in a set of pictures showing you how to operate it, but with no accompanying text. There is a section of trouble-shooting if you have problems. On the device itself there are four illustrations on how to operate it. Checking the Bosch website does not reveal a “how-to” video which would be helpful given that this device has features not used on simpler, less expensive devices.Overall it is well made,cuts the tiles with accuracy and without needing to deeply etch the tile surface to obtain a clean break. You should make a saving on tiles since you will have fewer mis-cuts and breakages.

my first impression when removing from the box was how big it was. Il looks solid and well made. It has a locking system and handles on each side so moving and lifting it is easy.t comes with a leaflet containing diagrams and text with safety rules, practical advice re use and maintenance and service advice. It has a rail and rule for positioning the tile which is easily adjusted The tile is held in position then scored and broken by a lever to the desired size and shape. My husband and son were putting ceramic tiles down in the hall. They were thrilled with how it worked. They wasted no tiles and did the job very quickly. They also noticed that it coped well with repetitive work too.I did not use it but I did like the results

I found this very robust and pretty good for large (600mm) tiles. My only comment on cutting is that, at the end nearest the handle, I’d occasionally get a cut that would deviate slightly in the last 20-30mm on a 600mm cut despite there being a clear score line. Not the end of the world.The other slightly counter-intuitive bit of design is that the scale on the stop for small cuts goes in the opposite direction from the scale for large cuts. Only made the mistake once but worth being aware of so, rather than a 235mm cut, you don’t get a 225mm cut.

makes a tough job easy, cuts without excessive pressure, the cutting wheel is replaceable which is brilliant and with all the extras (measuring guide,cutting guide,sprung plates for breaking the tile). so much better than the cheaper options from the diy store we had been using.I cuts down waste from all those tiles that don't break correctly so will save you money in the long run and it is sized to take even the biggest household tiles

The basic tile cutter I had before this would have the equivalent of penis envy if it were a living being with feelings. This is quite weighty and came in a huge box. It doesn't look like it's going to fall apart any time soon and is used to cutting down to size, which it does so with ease.I don't think this is the most high-end tile cutter, it's roughly mid-range, but for the price I think it's almost perfect.

If you need a quality tile cutter then Bosch is one of the first names that will come up as a prospective purchase.This is quality with a capital 'Q' and although expensive its performance and build quality justify the price.

Excellent product can cut tiles extremely well with very little effort. Holds the tiles in place when cutting and is extremely accurate. Can cut large tiles and thin strips as well as being able to cut tiny little squares.
