This is a remake of the original Rowan/Empire "Battle of Britain" flight sim (CLEARLY WRITTEN ON THE BOX), but don't let that put you off. It's not been just a facelift, but much of the internal workings of the game have been revamped or completely rewritten.Even the famous BDG-MA upgrades on the original BoB game don't come close to this version. The flight models have had a total rework, and the graphics are stunning - just wait until you see the clouds/sky, weather effects, water... the sunrise & sun sets are simply mouthwatering.OK, graphics only make up part of the game. How does it run?Well, out of the box it has caused problems for many, while equal amounts of people have had no problems at all. This game needs A LOT of horsepower to run, so if you're on anything under a 128mb video card with less than 256mb RAM, you will have problems. The game play is pretty solid once running, and is even better with the patches that have been released by the developers SHOCKWAVE (if you have problems with the game, ignore GMX they're a bunch of wasters. Shockwave are very active in the forums for this game via the Shockwave website, and are very quick to respond to any issues and lend assistance, as are the rest of the BoBII: WoV community) and the dynamic campaigns out peform any WWII sim rival by far. Why? The sheer scope of the battle.... you can have upto 1000+ aircraft in the larger dogfights as the battle progresses, with the fight stretching from Dover to Brighton all the way inland to London! You can play the campaign from the RAF or the Luftwaffe, and you can fly the following aircraft:Spitfire Mk1aSpitfire Mk1bHurricane Mk1aHurricane Mk1bMesserschmitt Bf109E-3Messercshmitt Bf110C-3/B (pilot only)Junkers Ju87B-2 Stuka (pilot only)Heinkel He111, Junkers Ju88, Dornier Do17 (gunners only)The actual campaign starts early July 1940 and continues until late September 1940. The campaign can actually be run on a real time basis when in the "map room" where you plan & watch the battle progress, or you can accelerate time to speed up things and progress onto the next big dogfight. You can fly for any active squadron within the RAF or Luftwaffe, and fly in any position within that squadron (squadron leader, wingman, flight leader, element leader on so on). The campaign can be flown right from the start, for you can enter at any one of a pre-defined historical tactical stage of the conflict. The in-game configurations are quite extensive and do need to be set up carefully to enjoy trouble free gaming by matching the game performance to that of your operating system. As said before, if you have problems, log onto the Shockwave forums for help! The game also includes a series of training missions and one-off combat missions to help you hone your skill and learn your preferred aircraft before taking to a campaign. There are still some issues & bugs with the game, but the Dev team at Shockwave are working flat out on fixes ( I know as I've been lending a hand is some of the testing & reporting on the beta of the latest patch & upgrade ). The latest patch (brings game up to v2.03) is due for release in the very near future, and will be advertised on the Shockwave forums. The game is also VERY mod friendly, and there have been numerous add-ons for details on the aircraft & landscape already put together by the BoBII community which are well worth investigating. There is no multiplayer in the game, but with the game being open & modable, it could be possibility in the future. The same goes for new aircraft and new campaign areas - one that has been talked about already is the Med.There is a hell of a lot to this game if you're willing to take the time to look... and if you get involved with the BoBII community on the forums the experience just gets better & better.I have given this a 5 star rating because despite the teething problems that many have had, this game is a stunner, but I fear that only the patient will ever see the true splendour of this title as currently you need to do a lot of tweaking with the settings. The graphics are top notch, and the single player campaign CANNOT be beaten for sheer size and complexity.Coupled that with the first class support from the Developers (remember that's SHOCKWAVE not GMX) and the potential for growth by mods, this game is just superb.Just so you know, I've been using flight simulators since the early 1980's. I'm a diehard IL-2 series fan, and have flown that pretty much non-stop since the original release in 2001 both offline and on multiplayer all the way through to the latest Pacific Fighters version. But since BoBII: WoV, I've barely touched it, as I'm too busy defending England in the summer of 1940.

Played on Windows Vista & 7 64bit.If your playing above 1920x1080p or have issues with the in game air simulation not scaling to your monitors resolution. Then in the graphics options, disable "Use Windows desktop resolution (recommended)" & manually input your monitors resolution in the "3D resolution" option. I had to do this myself playing at 22560x1440p.BOB2WOV combined with the 2.12 patch (which you can get online along with the multiskin patch), is firstly a flight simulation recreation of the Battle Of Britain, however the game doesn't force you to fly, you have the choice, and as such there is some strategy on offer too.The main draw to this game however is the single player campaign flight simulation of being able to fly Allied or Axis with Spitfires/Hurricanes/Bf109s etc.The strategy side is that you play the part of the Supreme Air commander for the RAF or the Luftwaffe. You get to decide such things for example, as RAF, the size/location of squadrons on patrol, the location/relocation of squadrons around British airfields and which squadrons get priority to aircraft replacements. And obviously with the Luftwaffe you get to choose fighter support sizes for your bombers, and where to bomb etc.The simulation side of the game is very good, and benefits both experienced/less experienced simulation players. I'm not a hardcore flight simulation player, but i found the planes easy to maneuver, with the only difficulty being keeping track(view) of your target. BOB2 lets you tweak things like how realistic or unrealistic you want things to be in this case. From things like air affects/turbulance on your plane, having realistic or unlimited ammo and the quality of your sides and opponents pilots etc. When launching into a battle, you can also decide to be the Leader or a wingman, which can make things easier, so you can concentrate on battle more. However if your leader dies, you will take command of whats left.Visually the game is very good air to air wise, and patches have added hundreds of new buildings/plane skins, so when your flying low you can see buildings or landmarks. The thing that will take your breath away at first, when you jump into a battle, will be the scale of the battles(its AMAZING), with upto anything like 200 planes in battle at once, which gives you some scale/feel on what it was like for the pilots of the time, to be such a small speck with the large scale events going on around you.I am very pleased that they gave this game another chance, and have certainly breathed air into its lungs, and brought it back to life, as it was meant to be enjoyed, jolly good show ;0) Highly recommended.

Before ordering I researched the product to realise that this game puts high demands on your pc, so I was not too surprised to find it crash fairly regularly after loading and playing. Searching further on the freely available support forums (A2A Sims) I have since realised that this is an old game now but there are several updated patches to this game, enhancing stability issues as well as improving on the options and general gameplay. I think this game will probably cause similar problems to others out there, (I run a standard out of the box 4yr old Dell with windows XP) so be prepared to consider downloading the latest patch and then once loaded be alter the local game settings (very easy)to increase the all important Frames Rate Speed.Ok there is no manual, and no obvious guidance on where to download it from. From the earlier mentioned forum, I again freely downloaded an excellent (PDF) 275 page manual which helped no end.Out of the box the product would of only got a lesser rating, but I am basing my review score with the freely available downloadable patch (2.10) in mind and with all settings working as best as I possibly can with my run of the mill pc.The game does come with a very informative and well put together 50 minute DVD. If you know nothing about the Battle of Britain (shame on you) then watch this for an insight. This will put you in the picture and right frame of mind to fully enjoy the experience. The game can be played as pilot doing stand alone training missions or as a commander of either the RAF or Luftwaffe. The settings options available are fully geared for choice how you wish to play the game and also for you to alter the detailing and effects available. Bascially a slower PC can still play the game as long as you dumb down he res of the background images and water effects for example. Once you have achieved a smooth frame rate with no sticking or jamming on the visuals you will finally enjoy what I feel is a very very good game. The 'feel' of the aircraft just seems right, the missions are a challenge and the historical accuracy is a lesson in WW2 history itself. This will give many hours of gameplay and enjoyment and not the kind of game you would master in a weekend. I would recommened this game but be prepared for a bit of tweaking here and there to get the best from your PC.

when this game came in the post i had no trouble loading it on my pc, so once it did load i could not get off the game, ( i have got windows 7 home premium)this game is very much true to the times of the second world war when Britain was under attack by Nazi Germany, some of the planes you can fly are Spitfires mk1a, mk1b, Hurricanes mk1a, mk1b, German ju88's, ju87's, bf109e's and so on.I have this on my pc a Quad Core Q8400 processing power and huge 1Tb hard drive coupled with an Nvidia GeForce gaming graphics card and Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 processor (2.66GHz). 4Gb RAM. 1Tb hard drive. DVDRW drive. 512Mb nVidia Inno3D GeForce 9800GT gaming graphics card. 52 in 1 card reader. Microsoft Works.Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium. So yes the game will load with this pc spec.some of the stuff you can do in the game inclues starting up the planes yourself the pv12 or Merlin engine sound like the real thing (i heard a Spitfire take off from Duxford air museum), you learn to take off and land, basic training and dog fighting, historic game play and much more.you can talk to other pilots and blast out some orders like "break or stick to me like glue" the game also has real crash landings and you can learn how to land the planes when it's damage and eject, you control the landing gear on take off and flaps when landing. The graphics are i think outstanding and the over all game play needs some practice but once you have the hang of it the battles are yours to rule the sky's, a good joy stick to use with this game is a cyborg x which costs around £30.00.If you like flight combat sims and want to live back in 1940's Britain and kick some Nazi butt this is the game for you i love it. there is an update for Battle of Britain Two the latest update is 2.11 wich will give you a better map in the battle room, mirrors are slightly changed, better handling for all planes, real life kills (so if you got shot down you can see your life fade away) multiplayer, better in game video's, radio voices through out the game including in flight and better graphics all round. If you want a awesome world war Two flight simulator thats as real life as it gets and true to the real Battle of Britain from 1940 buy this Battle of Britain 2 you will not be disapointed i promise you.

Many of the earlier reviews of this game stated comments such as 'flawed' & 'buggy'. Well now I can tell you that since the release of the 2.04 patch and the 2.05 patch - this is the definitive simulator.Thrusting the player into 1940s England, BoBII:WoV rules supreme. Incredibly detailed aircraft, the player will often forget they are still in the 21st century. The Flight Models of each aircraft are almost perfect. Every flaw and strength of each aircraft of the period is clearly defined. The cockpits are beautifully created with interactive [for the most part] buttons, switches and toggles. What does stand out however in this game is the AI.I've played many combat flight sims over the years from LucasArts Battle of Britain to Lockon Modern Air Combat. I can tell you that Wings of Victory by FAR has the best AI I've ever experienced. If you want pure realism and adrenaline rushes as your Spitfire rises to engage oncoming bomber formations, this is the game for you.The only reason I have rated this game as a 4 star is that is still has several small bugs that need to be ironed out (which will be occuring in a matter of days with the release of the 2.06 patch). I also believe the scenery could be vastly improved. However when you're zipping by at 320MPH with an Me109 glued to your six, you're not going to be sight-seeing.The game runs superb on my modest system. It handles the large bomber formations perfectly, graphics are top notch. Throw in an excellant customer support forum within which Devs of the game actively engage with the customers for improvements to the game, regular patches and fixes (including revisions of the FMs).You cannot go wrong with this game now, especially since the release of 2.05 patch which has practically eradicated any form of CTD and un-playability!So the final line; are you looking for a game that pits you against the best AI available with excellant graphic and flight modelling? Do you want to feel the rush as your squadron scrambles to meet the incoming waves of Luftwaffen aircraft? Do you want to feel the panic take hold as you sight those Me109s diving out of the sun too late? Invest in BobII:WoV and immerse yourself in 1940s once more.

Not sure what the last persons issues were. A spot of bad luck I suppose. I can understand his frustrations if the game did not function for him as he had expected but I have not had any issues with it. On the contrary, I have been nothing but thrilled with this product. Works fantastic on my X2 4600+, X1900XT rig. Best Combat Flight Sim I have played in a long time and with the acception of LOMAC I have played nearly all of em since the good old days of the 1990 version of Battle of Britain and other classics all the way to the IL2 Forgotten Battles. It's a world class Combat Flight Sim wrapped in a Real Time Strategy Game set against the backdrop of the most fiercest air battle in all human history.I can't get enough. The best way to describe it would be to merge the IL-2 series of games flight authenticity and flight model with Falcon 4.0 Allied Force's complex battlefield dynamics. It's a real time on going dynamic battle between you and the enemy AI General. You can play as either the RAF or the Germans. The immersion is great. That last guy needs to make sure he patched up to the latest version though. It had a rocky release but thank god the dev's stayed up with it. Since 2.04 and before it had some issues and crashes to desktop or freezing I hear. But since 2.05 and now 2.06, thousands are enjoying it. It's stable now. Just check in at their forums and see what regular players think. I hope he gets a chance to resolve whatever issue he is having or it might be the best Combat Flight Sim he never played. :(PCGAMER said it well in their March SIM COLUMN...- "Toss in some improved AI...and a new multiskin component...and you'll end up with a top-of-the-line WWII combat flight simulation that can hold its own with anything on the 2007 radar screen.""BOB2's padlocking system remains one of the best in the business""If you have the right stuff, a twisting and turning engagement between the nimble Spitfire and the quicker Bf109 can produce some of the most amazing aerial dogfighting action you'll ever witness in a PC Combat-sim."C.

"Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory" is a simply stunning flight simulator. But it is much more than that, it is as others have said a time machine to 1940. I am an enormous Battle of Britain enthusiast and have read (and own) many dozens of books on this subject, and everything about this game rings true to what I have read. The realism in this is quite simply awe-inspiring and will satisfy the most demanding of players. But be warned this is not some arcade, jump in the cockpit and shoot down swags of aircraft. Rather it is a highly detailed, complicated and an entirely realistic game and with a very steep learning curve. There are however several different "sim levels" in this from where the engine management, etc are automatically controlled by the computer right up to where the player has to control and manage everything about his aircraft - just starting the engine at this level requires the same amount of processes and procedure as firing up the real thing. However if you are willing to dedicate the time to this and take it step by step you will get as close to flying in the Battle of Britain as it is possible. The enemy AI is incredible and the ground you are flying over is map perfect (actually to the point where you could use a road map of Britain to navigate). The graphics and sound make this completely immersive and so realistically atmospheric you have to pinch yourself. You will need a fairly powerful PC to play this and it is imperative that you download the latest patch (currently 2.11) to make this as good as it gets. But if you really want to come as close as it is possible to experience what it was like to fly and fight in the summer of 1940 then for goodness sake get "Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory". You can virtually smell the oil, petrol and cordite. Tally Ho and enjoy!

A few months ago, I was an Il2 guy, I never thought I will find something better on the market. I was wrong. BoB2 is a real time machine. There's only a handful of flyable aircraft, but they're very well made indeed. The flight model is as accurate as in the Microsoft FS series. You'll find yourself enjoying just flying around Dover rocks in dusk. But there's more: huge, I mean huge battles! In no other games can you lead 24 spits and 12 Hurricanes against HUNDREDS of german bombers escorted by 50+ 109s. Even if you're an ace in other games, it's gonna be difficult to point your crosshair on a hun for the first time. And that's just not enough..AI planes won't fly straight forward, you'll have to follow them through series of manouvres you've never even tried to do. But for the sake of reality, you'll find novice bomber crews jumping out of their planes after a burst just because they panic!Sounds: just like the real ones.Radio chatter: you can ask everything, even the wind direction at altitude/ surface. No multiplayer, but who cares! This game has the best Campaign mode EVER! you command the whole RAF, hundreds of planes in the air a the same time, don't expect to become an ace in one mission, be happy if you survive!Dark sides: damage modeling. Just not as good as the other parts of the game.Don't forget, BoB2 supports 6DOF, and it has detailed, clickable cockpits! The out of box version might be a bit buggy, but don't mind, just install the patches (2.06 is on its way), it's gonna be ok.In conclusion; it's a historically perfectly made game for those who are well trained in other games, and want something more challenging. visit the forums at [...] .This game has the best community, you can ask anything, they'll help you!

It's a shame that the sim was cursed with problems straight out of the box, when what is apparently a previously undetected bug causes crashes on many machines. But in the long run, BoB:WoV is worth it. Since its launch, there have been two patches, one to address the frequent CTDs which plague many users, and one to enhance frame rates; both of these have had marked success on my machine. On the plus side, the visuals are amazing and the immersion is truly second to none. The flight models are challenging (in a good way) on full realism, but the screen can be a little jerky when there are 300+ aircraft in the same sky. Then again,no other sim could even attempt to try to put that many planes into a mission and I wouldn't recommend you try unless you have a fire extinguisher stood ready. ;)I've found that he Development Team (Shockwave) are eager to help anybody who has problems and are willing to seek a solution. They really care about this sim and are firmly committed to further development (CFS3's authors could learn a lot from them). The sim isn't perfect; IMO it's a diamond that needs polishing. It holds a level of historical accuracy in maps, tactics, and just odd little details which I can never remember seeing in any other title, and it puts you right in the middle of it. I believe it has the potential to rival any sim out there, but it's a shame it was hamstrung by a disasterous launch.

Thanks to the work of a dedicated community of volunteer coders, Battle of Britain II, or BOBII, is now 300x the game it was in 2006 and with patch 2.11 has become the most authentic and immersive reproduction of the Battle of Britain available on the PC. This video gives a flavour of both the Battle, and how closely the game reflects the reality. Search 'BOBII' on YouTube for many more examples.Battle of Britain II, Wings of Victory was released in 2006. The developers improved it through 2006 and 2007 with patches and fixes and then generously handed the code over to a group of Battle of Britain enthusiasts, the BoB Developers Group (BDG)who continued to make improvements to the game which introduced a range of exciting new features including a single player campaign, dynamic AI, improved flight models tested by a real Battle of Britain RAF fighter pilot (Wing Commander Tim Elkington), more than 200+ new ground models, historically accurate skins for every one of the thousands of fighters and bombers in the game, and a range of free add on missions and campaigns. Version 2.11 introduced further improvements and not least, the ability to fly the venerable Tiger Moth trainer with hi fidelity flight model and authentic Gypsy Major engine sounds.

It would be a mistake to read only about the initial stability issues with this sim. It is complex and needed a lot of fixing. But 3+ years on, it is still going strong with regular content updates. The latest all-in-one patch is version 2.08 with version 2.09 about to come. There is a strong community around the sim and the topic. Just look for a2asimulations(dot)com (formerly shockwaveproductions(dot)com) and look for the Battle of Britain II forums for updates. With the update patches has come the most complete representation of the Battle of Britain ever. Over 400 individual aircraft skins are in the "Multiskin" package and each individual aircraft has historically accurate markings and deployment. You then have simply the best AI in the combat flight sim business, bar none. This has been developed over 5 years now. And of course the largest scale combat in any sim. Hundreds of aircraft fight in historically accurate battle raging over fifty miles. If you have a graphics card that fully supports DirectX9 (you need this) then patch it and it's a real gem. A benchmark sim that has matured very well.

Battle of Britain games are ten a penny. This one is transcendent. The gamer enoys all the edge of the seat excitement of a wham-bam DVD but the here program is structured by precise historical analysis. Each day's action between July10 1940 and Sept 15th is mapped out on by attacks based on respective Luftwaffe and RAF war diaries and the first lesson you learn is that your resources are finite ! If you play the part of the Luftwaffe, you can afford to fight a battle of attrition. Be too profligate with the lives of your bomber crews and you face a crisis of morale - they turn back or scatter their bombs. Play the part of the RAF and each plane is a precious asset which you lose at your peril.Ignore the negative reviews - they are out of date.Just dont try to run it on an old plastic box. As a professional historian I can vouch for the accuracy of the program and I am in awe of the work that has gone into it. As a game its a scintillating experience, one that conjures up all the gut-wrenching thrills, the courage the glory and the sheer terror of the Battle of Britain.

This is a fantastic immersive game and deserves 4 stars despite its age. Battles with 100 planes on each side are amazing as is the strategy element. However get involved in the online forums first to check it will work on your machine and to get recommendations for what version to patch it to (on CD is v 2.00 so you need to patch it). It worked partially on my Win 10 machine (internal graphics only - caused some crashes when flying but it was flyable in my case - also playable without probs as strategy-only) and that was enough motivation for me to restore an old XP machine to play it on.

having been into flight sims for as long as ive been around computers (oh boy, about 26 years if i think about it!).battle of britain 2 has to be the single most well rounded, atmospheric and convincing sim ive ever played. If your lucky enough to have a trackir headset and a force feedback joystick it is one of the most emersive gaming experiences out there.Add to this a very supportive and mature community, and a great deal of support from a developement team who clearly love their (unpaid) work,BOB2 has to be one if not THE gaming highlight of the year so far
