Fistly, I must reiterate a previous review imploring people to also go read dedicated games review sites; a lot of reviews here are woefully misguided, either appearing to have missed the point entirely (some need to look up the word 'tactics' before rendering a judgement on what doesnt qualify for it) or got so stuck in the cliche base-building RTS rut that to venture outside it is like going cold turkey (presumably one reason why the externally divisive C&C3 is so highly rated on Amazon).Onto World in Conflict itself. Well, lets start by commenting on its designers, Massive Entertainment. In a world populated by games that are still essentially clones of the old Command & Conquer with a measure of the more artificial Warcraft 3 paper-scissor-stone mechanics thrown in,Massive have never made a game remotely like that. The two Ground Controls were different from the 'norm' and different even from each other. WiC is also like them both in that it is not only different from the genre cliche but is even different from its predecessors; no copy-and-paste design from Massive! So if you are getting bored of 'samey' RTS games, WiC is recommended on pedigree alone.Graphics I wont talk about much; many here do, and in doing so often miss the game underneath them. The most important thing to say that the game is a rare gem these days in that it is very workable on even quite 'weak' computers.Gameplay-wise, you take contol of a small force (roughly platoon-size) of late Cold War troops and must command them with skill against a technically equal enemy. There is some paper-scissors-stone but not in the usual, artificial way; its more naturalistic and much less rigid. Objectives generally focus around strategic locations rather than simply slugging it out with an enemy base with no actual requirement or need for manouvre. Terrain plays a huge part in the game; bullets dont pass through terrain, you actually need direct line of sight to shoot along (a rarity even in these days), and that forced requirement to manouvre mistakingly makes many people think the game is a 'rush' game, with no tactics, when it is actually the total opposite and requires actual thought to play to the fullest extent.Ultimately, it is a rare and excellent experience; a real game of tactics rather than the usual 'spam a bunch of units and rush the enemy base ASAP' (or focus simply speed-clicking micromanagement, a just as intellectually bankrupt mechanic), where movement and application of tactics are actually rewarded properly; but also it is not so overcomplicated that someone without much knowledge of military matters would find it frustrating (or conversely, where the focus is solely on micromanagement, which can frustrate others). You can choose your own level of play.Online play is another big plus. Let me state here and now that I normally dislike online strategy gaming; usually designers with online play in mind tend to seriously compromise the quality of their game to pander to a stagnant market of artificial paper-scissor-stone online play (even otherwise excellent games like Company of Heroes ultimately fail to rise beyond mono-tactic and rigid build orders when playing online comes into effect). It also tends to be very cliquey and individualistic. Not so with WiC, where the emphasis is on teamplay. You are restricted to playing within certain roles, which is in a sense the ultimate form of paper-scissors-stone, but ironically it is managed in a way that avoids the usual frustration and restriction on creativity that so plagues other games. To win you need to play your roles not in an individually good way, but in a _mutally_ good way. A numerically inferior team can defeat a cohesively inferior team, almost unheard of in modern RTS gaming, and the highest ideal to aim for.-----------In summary, World in Conflict is a truly original and well-made game. It is proud of its heritage and lofty ideals, but not so much that it simply clones what has gone before. In a world that is becoming increasingly staid and lacking in originality or quality, it is a rare gem that not only delivers, but often exceeds its apparent promise. Well worth the money, but dont just take my word for it, look outside Amazon at balanced, professional reviews.

this game is the ulitmate of startegys, it is awsome!!! this game makes C&C 3 look rubbish, why? because it is proper strategy, and i mean proper!usally games on single player take 40 minites and on multi 20 at the most, some people think that how can you build up you forces in that time because they get statergys which take 30 mins to build up forces! 20 seconds on this game and you have the first wave of troops to fight with usally 5-8 units. soem people may think while reading this review well fighting a war with 5-8 units sounds pretty rubbish, well when there are 16 people on a game all wioth 5-8 units thats alot of units on the battlefield already. 50 seconds the fighting starts and does not stop for a solid 20 miniutes,by the end of it you have properbly called in 4-6 new waves of forces and had to think alot! I love playing infantry because it is so realistic, they can hid in woods and forests, take cover in buildings, and on of the most anyonying things about other stataregies is that units die really unrealisticly on Empire Earth the short swords man does a backflip in the air while screaming "urgh" to make sure you know he is dead. I hate that on this it does not happen people and units die properly infantry if they are running and die dont do a backflip they fall over adn skid along the floor for a second which would happen. But by the time the battle is up the city, town or suberb you were fighting in is no more, artillery barrages and tactical nukes have made it a smoldeing ash, that is what happens in real war, these things happen in war, a nuke leaves radadtion which effects any units going near. buildings blow up realisticly not catch fire, get more on fire and then suddenly turn into a pile of rubble, with a laser guided bomb it penetrates the roof then it blows up a burst of explosions and the building crumbles in on itself, realistic or what??the only proplem is you need a awsome computer, i mean awsome, 1 year old at the most. my laptop is 4 yeears old, i ahd to buy a new video card, some new ram and connect to a faster internet, then it worked well, but if you have a new computer so buy this game, if you dont if you want it be ready to spend £200 on new stuff for it.But it is a must buy i think my 200 pounds were well spent

I thinkt hat World in Conflict is actually over-rated on many professional game sites, so i complied a concise review of the games standard edition. Yes you don't get the snazy headset with this.GAMEPLAY:Well there are quite a few missions (haven't finished it yet), and at first they give the impression that the level will be easy to complete, many of the goals set are for you to obtain command points, which sound easy but are suprisingly challenging. The difficulty is pretty medium i think, games may take a while to do but can be acheived with persistance. The game is pretty simple as well as far as command and control goes, the controls are easy to pick up and can have you going in no time with the easy tutorial.Overall = 8/10ONLINE PLAY:Online play isn't the greatest thing in the world unfortunately. You have 4 roles that you play as, armour support air and infantry. If you pick anything except Air you are likely to get obliterated by the opposing apaches instantly. It is a lot more fun having a smaller condensed battle were you all play as a single role, otherwise it is just he who controls the Sky wins.Overall = 4/10GRAPHICS and AUDIO:The graphics look amazing, even on low detail, and for most people thjats what your only going to get. I have at the moment a 2 GB RAM, 3.4 Ghz processor and an 8600 GT card, and i can only get the settings on low to medium. (So i bouhgt a new computer which arrives shortly), the graphics though are good quality, even if you run them on low, so there's note laods of problems there. I don't advise getting the game if you have any specs lower than i have mentioned as you won't enjoy it much at all. As for the Audio, i can't really say that much, the effects are pretty good quality, but thats about it, i turnewd the music right down.Overall = 7/10OVERALL:The game can offer some great graphical scenes here and some nice SFX to go with it, but be prepared to fork out money on a top machine if you want those. Online play is lacking and i think, thats what fails the game.OVERALL SCORE =7/10

Ok, the engine for this game is superb. So much so that to run the game at its most pretty you will need a very high end machine to get the best out of it. Even so, on lower settings the game is presented beautifully. It is great fun to play as well as you ply your outnumbered units against a mass of Soviet forces. The games uses a neat system where you gather points to call in various air and artillery strikes which are wonderfully rendered by the already well advertised game engine. However, for all of the lush graphics and smart presentation the game lacks in one crucial area. Its essentially a kick and rush game where you simply send in enough of your forces to eventually kill enough of theirs. Its a war of attrition and any unit that attains a veteran status is soon wiped out simply because the enemy is too many. You can't really employ any tactics of your own having to follow the orders of the colonel to the letter. And no, sending one tank down one street whilst the others attack down another does not constitute 'tactics' it could have been much, much better. Its a shame that the hype has overshadowed these failings as World of Conflict is a big step in the right direction. Its just too frenetic to be anything other than a click and fire game where you simply hope your forces dont become overwhelmed which they are almost always near to being. It tries too hard to be clever when in reality its just a very good looking air head that can't engage in any reasonable conversation. I know its a weird analogy but hey. Still, its very enjoyable at times and although the story is a little trite to say the very least it is a good yarn. You will not regret buying this but be warned it isn't the be all and end all of computer games. Its just heading in the right way.

I have to admit; I got this game to fulfill a bit of a void in my current games collection that used to be filled by games like Command and Conquer or Company of Heroes. I wasn't expecting anything novel, but quite liked the concept of a Russian invasion of the US. In terms of units, gameplay, cutscenes, etc., it's like a lot of RTS games out there, but then, this game comes and surprises you.The between-mission cutscenes are comic-style artwork, the voice acting is good, the scenery is convincing, and the scale is accurate. A big thing for me is they've got the time period just right; a showdown between two huge superpowers at the peak of their war-fighting prowess takes you back to the good old days and away for the current binge of asymmetric warfare and suicide bombers. This game also realises a fact that is missing in so many RTS games; most kills are from indirect fire or air support, and this is a game that has got artillery and support powers just right. No stupid laser guns, and you have to build the timing into your actions, and bang. They've got it just right. Cluster bombs take out light units, bunker-busters take out buildings, A-10 chew up rows of tanks... it's not just a dumb superweapon, you actually have to integrate it into your plan of attack. Why not 5 stars? Ultimately it's a little samey after a while. The story takes you through the first time but I'm not sure it's got a great deal of replay value. Helicopters feel woefully underpowered due to the micromanagement they require, and there is a bit of a dichotomy between on the one hand wanting to value your precious valiant units and upgrade their veterancy, and on the other hand being able to just spam as many infinite units as you want into the line of fire.Definitely worth a shot.

***DEMO BASED***The singleplayer missions take on a format similar to Company of Heroes, cinematic and then objective-based play (taking the good ol' tried and tested control points). Taking control points allows you to call in units (unlike other RTS', this game features no bases but instead player-chosen drop zones). The singleplayer gmae itself appears average, with basic unit abilities (offensive and defensive) and a points system. It's the multiplayer where WiC comes into its element, the online community runs dedicated servers; so unlike other RTS' you can leap straight into or out of the fray with up to sixteen players! Upon entering the game the player chooses a side and then one of four unit types: Infantry,Armour, Support and Air. The multiplayer revolves around teams fighting for control points, with players relying on others for basic support (for example, an armoured company is going to get butchered by aircraft, so they will need an Air player to offer air support or anti-aircraft vehicles from a Support playe). This is however where the problem comes in; teamplay, this game is only fun if you are with decent players who will acknowledge waypoints and requests for help! Finally, the game engine. The game uses a decent traditional RTS HUD and hotkeys. The graphics are pretty decent, even when I run them on medium ;)The sound is great and perhaps one of the best elements, with dialogue recorded for almost every event, chatter when units are zoomed in on and commander reports.I would certainly buy this game if you enjoy the idea of jumping in and out of deep multiplayer combat ranging from a 5 minute break to a 30 minute showdown!

First off, if you really want a review, go to a games review site, not amazon. Numerous reviews here sound like they are from people who lost once too often at this game. Now, to the gameplay. Straight out of the box it is a very good, well made game, but with the odd hiccup. Now, after many patches in the space of a very short time, this game has met everyones hopes for it. The support from the developers of this game is phenomenal, and that is reflected in the patches which address every major issue brought up by the community. The tutorial gives you everything you need to know, and the campaign slowly introduces new units on even mission throughout. The isn't much to say about the graphics, only that on full settings they are near photo realistic. As said by many other people, even on low graphics it still looks good. Now, multiplayer. It is like nothing I've played, and for the better. It will take a couple of hours for you to find your place, know your strengths and weaknesses, and start leaning towards one role. Air, Armour, Support and Infantry, each with its own units to choose from. It basically boils down to a massive Rock, Paper, Scissors. People complain when they get 'owned' by the roles which is their counter. Don't attack your predators, attack your prey. If something is going badly, change your role mid-game to counter it. With matches of 8v8 there is always others around to help you out. And instead of being like other RTS's, you have a few units to command, rather than an army of thousands, allowing you to constantly monitor your units, which adds some really interesting gameplay.

1) This game is sooooooooooo immense as the cinematics are, i swear to god, LIKE REAL and you really do want to play through the seemingly dull campaigne (only dull when you find out how good online is.)2) You dont control whole army but small groups with many tactics and options. (like 6000 points worth. 1 best tank = 1200. Best anything = 1200. Riflemen = 400)3) dont know what bolony some other reviews are about but you can play this on the worst graphics setting and still looks good. You do need a high spec pc for anything above High+ as it does then lag down.4) gorgeous, very simple: no actual names of units only phrase of what they do. example: demo team/heavy tank/medium chopper/anti-tank team.Stuff like that. There are loads more units. Each faction (USSR-russia) (USA-duh) (NATO-WW2 aliiances, europe basically) Nato+USA vs. USSR. Each faction has 4 catagories which you in your team (online) all then control. eg. Player 1 - air Player 2 - armour etc..5) ONLINE IS FREE AND AWSOME AS YOU JUMP INTO ANY OPEN GAME WITH NO LAG EVER (only when a nuke goes of in you face) JUST LIKE CALL OF DUTY WAW/4.6) ITS CHEAP AND NEARLY ALL THE BUGS LISTED BEFORE ARE FIXED IN ONE SMALL UPDATE WHICH IS ALL THE PREVIOUS PUT TOGETHER.7) Camera can zoom from 300m and see everything(need to change in game options first) to 1m and (on high graphics) see a riflemen's mouschtache.get it. or else youll never know what a tactical nuke looks and sounds like when your either right in the middle of it. (you actually see the radioactivity and clicks) Or when your 300m above it on the highest camera setting you can get.

I knew I'd like this game, but I just cant get to grips with the whole troop drop thing.I prefer to make as many units as I want, but World in Conflict focuses more on instant gameplay, which although isn't my taste, is still a good thing. You don't have to mess about gathering or running out of resources. You have a set amount of points (probably not the technical term) which you start with to order a few troops. So you might order a couple of heavy attack helo's or a tank and a medium attack chopper. If one of your units goes down, you slowly get the points back, so you can reorder more when available. Might sound complicated, but it's really simple and really effective. It means battles last exactly as long as they need to.Some people say the single player is weak, but it really isn't that bad. It's all I've managed to play as I'm really not that good and don't fancy getting owned online.Although, from what I've read, online is where the game shines.I tried to practice in skirmishes against the AI, but after a while, the game crashes to desktop.Which did eventually cause me to loose interest.Still, there are new fixes and maps being released, so hopefully I'll be able to play it soon. One of this years best RTS games and a refreshing new style of gameplay it's definitely worth a try.

Having played both the Beta and Demo, i couldn't wait for the real thing. Now it is out, i can throw myself full on into the campaign and multiplayer. the campaign is well written and actually has a movie like plot. On the hardest difficulty it is also very impressive, the A.I uses a multitude of tactics to wipe you out, to my annoyance. But its the multiplayer were the fun truly starts. having only played 3 maps before the real game. i was astounded by the amount of maps, and how different they each were. each map requiring different plans and tactics.Within half a minute you're busy firing shells into the enemy. its so fast-paced.People have complained about the tactics on this game.that there isn't any. well personally i believe they are wrong. the tactics comes in form of teamwork. proper teamwork. so not matter if the enemy masses in one place. a well worked-out attack can change to tide of battle instantly. of even a well placed artillery strike.that reminds me, the visuals on this game are stunning. you can just sit there and watch the battle unfold before your eyes.A Brilliant game offline and onlineA definite buy for RTS fansand should also be tried by non-RTS fans.

Many years ago I remember installing the original Command and Conquer RTS and marvelling at it. Since then I have been a fan of the genre although as time has gone on the various titles do seem to get a bit obvious over time. After installing WIC and playing the tutorial I got the same buzz as I had back with the original c&c. I am only just into the first few missions but so far this has it all; breathtaking graphics that made me glad I spent far too much on a hot rig recently; a storyline that sets a good pace; a good mix of units and an interesting and rewarding way of building and replenishing them; great tactical support.....the artillery and airstrike element of this game is very powerful both in terms of gameplay and visuals. What also gives WIC the edge is the little touches. I was panning around the battlefield and placed the camera next to an IFV and they were having a conversation inside! The game is very fast moving indeed which isn't such a bad thing.....base building and amassing huge armies ready for a surge can get boring after a while! Great for bringing back that '80s paranoia. Best way I can describe this game is RTS but looking, tasting and feeling totally fresh!

Real time strategy as you fight WW3 in the mid 1980s.If you saw the film Red Dawn, this is the kind of thing you see here, Russians invading the US mainland and you control a variety of troops to try to hold back the red hoard. You play the part of a lieutenant undertaking a number of missions, very similar to Company Of Heroes but with more modern weapons. Mainly you control ground troops, but there is one chapter where you command helicopters fighting above New York and the Statue of Liberty.Playing the single player campaign at normal level, I really enjoyed this. There is no base or structure building, this is about using your resources wisely, along with re-enforcements and artillery. The story jumps about a little, the US, Russia and Europe all feature and there is a backstory that links it all together. But controls are easy to use with nice graphics and you get involved quickly and easily and as the story unfolds you start to enjoy it more and more as you grow in confidence and ability with your troops. If you liked Company of Heroes then I have no doubt you would enjoy this too - great stuff.

I couldn't wait to get my grubby mits on this, being an avid fan of rts war games. I was expecting great things, but my hopes were soon dashed. The graphics are very nice and the game plays smoothly enough, it's just that the missions somehow get repetetive and on occasion the action is unerringly relentless. There is no chance to grab your breath and the strategy seems to be to complete your task as quickly as possible, and or hold a position against never ending enemies that have little or no AI. Also, even though the maps look huge, the actual play area is not that big and is no where near as interactive as, say, Soldiers heroes of ww2 (which in my opinion is better, and that's saying something for a 3 year old game). Company of heroes is also better than this offering, but if your getting bored and suffering from lack of new ww2 rts titles this will keep you sane for a few days.

Ok guys, the demo is out there should be links on most major gaming sites. Try fileshack, gamespot etc...Anyway I am really impressed with the demo, the sheer scale and intensity of the gameplay is incredible. This is more frenetic than company of heroes by a long way.Very detailed units, fully destructible terrain and the most realistic explosions I have EVER seen in a video game. We can't review the full game until it's here, (take notice all those of you who weirdly try to before playing!?!?!) However if the demo is anything to go by then WiC is going to be a very impressive game.Note of caution this game like all these newfangled releases (crysis, assasins creed etc) are graphically very demanding,as there are such sweet visuals make sure you have a good rig to see them in all their glory.Ciao bene

***DEMO BASED***I downloaded the demo yesterday, and after just ONE play i'm going to be buying it as soon as I have the money.Absolutely fantastic pacing for a strategy game, although it can seem quite relentless at times, you soon get used to the all out action approach to the genre.Unfortunately my computer is quite low spec for these days, and i was initially apprehensive about how it would run on my computer. However, i was able to run it quite well, almost no slow down. Even on low setting, when the action kicks in the explosions, smoke trails and everything else looks absolutely gorgeous. To give you an idea of the spec of my computer ive listed it below, hopefully to persuade any doubters that it really can run on an ageing system.AMD XP 3200mhz CPU1gb DDR2 RAM256mb Radeon 9600 Graphics Card
