I have previously (and quite recently) purchased hard drives with much less storage for more money. So, the first plus point in this drive’s favour would be the price (£56.99 for 2TB at the time of this review) which I feel is a great deal. This drive is just slightly smaller and lighter than other drives I own. It’s not by much, but it’s noticeable when you line it up with other hard drives. Always a good thing when things are more streamlined. As claimed, I took this straight out of the box, plugged it in and away it went. In the box you get the drive, a little guarantee leaflet and two power cables - USB-C (which I will save for the future!) and USB-A. There was a little space in the plastic box not filled, which I now wonder should have contained a little instruction leaflet. Perhaps it was just mine that was missing. Not that you really need an instruction manual. I decided to use this as a Time Machine back-up so all I needed to do was plug it in and then click Back Up Now on the Time Machine drop-down menu on the Finder on my Mac. As I had previously used another hard drive with Time Machine, I got asked a few quick questions to make sure I wasn’t being taken advantage of, and then everything went swimmingly from there.Since I used this drive the first time, I have upgraded my machine to Catalina. Even though the box states that it is Mojave, High Sierra or Sierra compatible, I’m happy to report that it also works fine with Catalina 10.15.1.You can also use this drive as a simple storage device. Again, as claimed, it’s a simple as dragging and dropping files to and from the drive’s folder window. The drive comes with a 3-year limited warranty - which I hopefully will have no need for.You also get WD Discovery software included, which allows you to set a password with 256-bit AES hardware encryption - which sounds impressive although I confess to not really knowing the ins and outs of it.The Discovery software also lets you connect your drive with any cloud storage services such as Dropbox or Google Drive. This just means you can move things about more easily between your devices and your cloud storage. Not something I’m going to take advantage of but nice to know it’s available if I change my mind about what I use this drive for in the future.

The product itself is excellent, but I had substantial issues getting it to work correctly. In my experience (others may find differently) it was not Time Machine Ready out of the box and required a significant amount of research and experimentation to get it to work. When first connected it backed up 2 or 3 times, then said 'back-up failed'. Googling and experimentation ensued. I downloaded the more comprehensive WD Utilities software and used it to ensure the sleep function was not the cause of the failure. It would then back up once after restarting, and the next backup would fail as the first one still said 'in progress'. Restarting meant it would again back up once, then fail the second time.Further Googling found instructions posted by someone allegedly from Apple Support to use Apple's First Aid function after restarting the computer in Recovery Mode, the object of which was to ensure both drives were in the same state, and fix minor issues in one or other of the drives. The drive was then deleted. I did this twice as it did not work the first time, and the second time I did all the drives on my computer including the WD backup. The problem notification changed to something else, I forget the exact wording, but it still failed after the first backup. Then yet more Googling suggested removing all the WD Utilities (which I downloaded separately as part of problem-solving) and WD Discovery (came pre-installed) software. I searched my hard drive and deleted all WD software. Then restarted the laptop and it backed up flawlessly. It has functioned perfectly ever since, backing up as regular as clockwork. As I said, it's working great now, but it took more than two weeks to sort. I contacted Amazon support and they promptly offered to replace it (great service from Amazon), and that was the point at which I got it working. All in all it is fine now, but the key issue for me is it says 'Time Machine ready' (which is why I bought it) meaning in my book it should be plug and play. In my experience it was not. Still, a happy ending overall.

This WD My Passport for Mac (2TB) Portable Hard Drive comes complete with two USB Leads – one a USB A to B type and another USB B to C Type with WD Security and Drive Utilities for Mac pre-installed on the drive. The disc drive is very slim and compact and the immediate impression is of a well-made product which comes with a limited 3-year warranty and 30 days free support from the date of the first call. You can reformat this drive to work with a Windows PC if you wish - see the WD website for instructions. The drive self-installed on my Mac Book without fuss and if you want to install the software the process is equally painless. I found the WD encryption/password protection software really handy,it’s easy to set up and the drive seems social media friendly too.No extra power supply is required although the USB B type plugs are less common than most other types so you’ll need to carry the lead when travelling. I found the capacity to be slightly below 2TB (as you’d expect) but the disc feels fast at both reading and writing, I transferred 500 or 600 largish RAW photos very quickly to the drive which is almost silent and doesn’t really seem to get warm.Okay, so this isn’t an SSD with lightning speed, but it does offer fast read/write speeds for a drive of its type and provides a significant amount of storage in a very compact form at a reasonable price with the option of encryption/password protection – good value and hard to fault.

We already have speciality (My Passport for Mac) WD drives for our Macs (3Tb for the 27” iMac; a neat little 2Tb for the 21” iMac) and this 2Tb drive is to be used for a 11” MacAir (with a 120Gb SSD) – somewhat of an over kill except for pictures and video storage. I will also be backing up an older 9.7” iPadPro via the MacAir.The outer pack claims compatibility with OS Mojave and Windows 10 - although the MacAir has already been updated to the latest OS Catalina.Out off the blister pack is one neat little drive (so small and thin) with connecting cables for USBA and USBC. There is also a detailed multilanguage extremely small print warranty / regulatory / disputes sheet and no instruction sheet.Hmmm!Still this appears to be simple plug and play and on the 11” MacAir loaded Drive Utilities and Security software. It was easy to allocate it as the Time machine back-up drive. I was very surprised to find there was some 91Gb on the MacAir which took some 3h to completely back up. You can remove the drive using the usual “drag and drop” eject method as used for most external USB drives. You are given the opportunity at set up to password protect (with encryption) the device but I haven’t yet done thisSo, initial impressions 4 star (may upgrade later).NOTE there is also software for use on Windows computers so be careful to open the correct file

I’ve owned several My Passport drives from Western Digital and have always been impressed with their solid construction and reliability. This drive is no exception and with 2Tb of storage and a USB-C interface is perfect for sharing very large files or backing up your data. With two cables you can get maximum speed over USB-C but still make use of this drive if your machines has a USB-A connector (USB 2 or 3).The drive is “for Mac” which won’t stop it working on Windows (you’ll probably need to format it first). It comes bundled with software for macOS to make backing up easier, and can be password protected. I'm using it to back up my photography projects and it works perfectly for me.Overall this is a great package. You’ll find cheaper drives with the same capacity, but probably not the same longevity.

I've used various WD My Passport for Mac hard drives over the years, always with great confidence in their security and effectiveness. What is most remarkable about this particular drive is its extraordinary compactness. 0.9 x 10.5 x 7.5. It is barely wider than my iPhone 8 plus, certainly shorter, and thinner than the phone in its Torro case. It really is pocketable though one wouldn't want to transport it in that way.Best of all it is plug in and use, incredibly important for a non-techie like myself - I just want something that will store valuable data securely, both in terms of reliability and privacy. It works much more quietly than the older drives I have and quicker too.A perfect combination of ease of use, security and compactness. Very recommendable and at a fair price.

I had problems with my Mac recognising 2 LaCie HD's which i had to return, so I ordered this without much confidence. However, I plugged it into my new 2020 MacBook Pro and it instantly opened Time Machine and asked if I wanted to use it as a Time Machine backup - clicked yes and it started to back up the 500GB of data - my selecting 'back up automatically' it set itself to do hourly, daily and weekly backups. Super simple and effortless - not had it long so can't say what the longterm operation is like but for a plug and forget backup system it seems hard to beat. The HD is also very small and neat, you could slip it into the breast pocket of a suit jacket and not know it was there (not sure why you would want to do that but it illustrates it's compact size).

I have been buying WD drives for years and was wary of this latest one, as it had a lot of mixed reviews... I had a little trouble with the USB adapter to USBc cable to begin, but the minute I realised I had a better cable it sorted out all the conectivity issues, I'd suggest purchasing your own cable on purchase if you don't have a USBc port in your computer. These drives are perfect for storing files, stack well and back up quick.

My WD Passport ULTRA 4tb was suffering from a very low data transfer rate until I stopped using the supplied cable and instead replaced it with a good quality USB-c to USB-c cable bought separately . As soon as I did that the problem disappeared and the drive now seems to be functioning normally. With the supplied cable the drive was often hot to touch but with the new cable it seems much cooler.

I’ve been using Western Digital products for decades now, both as user and reseller, and never had any real problem. I have three 4Tb MyCloud drives at home for personal and professional use. Regarding portable HDD, I have already had a lot of it, always from WD and I can affirm that this is the best I have had so far. Fast, reliable and surprisingly compact for a 4Tb disk.

It arrived in good time but when I tried to use it on my Mac Pro I couldn't even get it to light up. I tried and tried but no good. I realised that it must be the usb cable sent with the ext hdd. Luckily I had a spare cable which I plugged dint and lo and behold the light came on and I could then go ahead an backup my pc, The hdd itself is very good.

I have tried Seagate, La Cie and Western Digital (WD) external hard drives. Being a Maccie, I found WD's 'My Passport for Mac' drives the most reliable. Would not touch other brands. My first WD 'For Mac' is now 5 years old and still working well. Beware -- external hard drives fail without any warning -- always back up in duplicate or triplicate!

This was a difficult item to install as the new Mac would not accept the plug in and go. Took a load of messing around and another Mac friend to get it connect. But when it eventually connected. Easy peasy. Remember to not move it when plugged in as you could easily wreck the disk inside. But in a happy 4terrabyte storage person now. Phew

Small neat tidy looking external hard drive. Using with my Mac as it’s already formatted. Just plug it in & off you go! I’m busy creating folders & dragging my photos in there for back up. Once I got into it, it’s working very well & im very pleased with the speed & how easy it is to eject. A neat device & 2TB to boot! Recommended!

Although I found this item a little pricey. I paid for a quality product that ensures by back ups are safe. This does this perfectly. Everything worked exactly as it should, Zero issues and works within set parameters.I recommend this item as ‘Very Fit for Purpose.’
