Wanted something portable to carry PC tools & programs on, so that when I am out and about, I can run the various utilities. Also handy for copying files & images from say a friend's PC for onward editing etc, when returning to the office. When I said, 'works straight out of the box', that's not exactly true - as with many items now being produced in China, they are 'carded' and this was no exception. It took a fair while to extract the drive from its packaging, destroying the card (with its warranty instructions) in the process, so might be tricky in the event if requiring a return.Once out of the packaging, insertion of the cable and plugging into a spare USB port produced an immediate recognition from my laptop running Windows 8.1,so no issues with the drive. What also happens is that Verbatim has included an autorun utility that opens up and gives a menu of options including product registration, downloading user manuals (in many different languages) and several other optional utilities that you can choose to try out or otherwise use as required. The registration process is straightforward and, after submitting the unit's Serial number and owner/seller details, you end up on the Verbatim website, where you can view their range of goodies and find out where to buy them if desired. In use, the drive is quite fast - especially if you plug it into a USB 3.0 port (don't worry, it's backwards compatible) and use the full speed advantage offered by this protocol. As it draws its own power from the USB port there is no requirement for any adapters or external power sources - you just plug it in as per a Flash memory stick. The important thing to remember of course, is to ensure that the drive is correctly removed, using the Windows Safe to Remove utility, in order to avoid potential file corruption of disk damage. In practice, I'm guessing that there are alternative protocol settings but there's no harm in being cautious. The drive capacity is quoted as '500GB' but in practice, as with most such drives sold these days, the actual usable capacity is only 465 GB, with the rest technically being taken up by Verbatim's built in drive utilities (actually only 2.5GB used) - some of which can be deleted but the capacity does not appear to change when refreshed in the Properties section of the OS. in reality, 465 GB, if multiplied by the standard conversion rate of 1024 bytes per kb, rounds up to 499,980,533,760 bytes=499GB!All in all, a good buy and well priced perhaps the cheapest around. There are bigger portable drives about (of which I have couple for back up) but this one is more than adequate for the use it is being put to.Recommended

I had a Verbatim hard disk for 5-6 years and it still works. There are rumors about other disks like buffalo western digital, Lacie bla bla bla which are overrated. So i would like to share my experience with you. I was working as a salesman in an electronic shop. We use to sell hard disks of various manufacturers. From all the hard disks that we use to sell at least 3 out of 10 disks came back straight to the service section for replacement.Verbatim and Samsung hard drives never came back. I was working there for three years... in three years they might have been 3 returns of Verbatim and Samsung. And i still have my verbatim next to me right now 6 years and still running. It is noisy if i have to rate it from 1 to 10 in noise i would give it a 4.But my recommendation to you all people trying to buy a hard drive, your priority should NOT be the slick design or how quite the disk is but "HOW RELIABLE IS."losing your data isn't very pleasing and i have experienced it with a buffalo hard drive...

I've bought a few of these over the last couple of years. I use them as back up and for viewing photos and videos through my TV.The one I bought most recently is slightly thinner than the other 1Tb ones I have but they aren't big or heavy anyway. My PC only has USB2 so I can't comment on the USB3 speed. I don't tend to move more than a couple of Gb at a time and I certainly don't find the transfer speed at USB2 slow enough to cause any major irritation. One of my older 500Gb ones did have a bit of a wobble recently; I lent it to a friend and it came back showing no data at all. I don't know if there had been a directory problem but it seems to work fine after I reformatted it using the utility from the Verbatim website. As with any drive,I never have only one copy of data (following an expensive mistake a few years ago). For a small, USB powered, large capacity drive, I was very happy for the £49.99 I paid.

Fast (USB 3.0), completely silent and reliable. Powers off the USB cable so no separate power supply needed. What more could you want in a drive? One note of caution though from the various other reviews I have read of drives. Never ever keep all your backups in one place on one drive. An external hard drive is only part of a comprehensive backup solution, ideally have two external drives from different manufacturers and a cloud backup too. It's cheaper than losing everything. I've had 2 internal hard drive failures and 3 windows complete rebuilds and have never lost anything thanks to a policy of keeping my stuff on a PC, 2 external drives and the cloud. This drive is an essential and recommended part of this strategy and I have never had any problems with it.

I don't know why so many people have had issues with this product. This is the second one I have bought, having had the first for around eighteen months and have had no problems whatsoever. I keep movies and downloaded music files on it mostly, as a backup to my laptop, and have had no problems whatsoever. The biggest file I moved onto it was 117GB and it done it in under 90 minutes, which I was more than happy with.As for durability, no problems there either. have dropped it onto the floor once and it still worked fine. Would certainly recommend and use again, but check all the colours and sizes first, as some are more expensive at 500MB for instance, than their plainer coloured 1TB counterparts. Also arrived within three days,so overall, five stars.

I was attracted to this unit as it could backup both MAC and Windows computer files, it will back up MAC from system 10.4 onwards which is quite old by today's standards, but there are quite a few G3 and later computers using the old type of pre-Intel OS, so this super capacity unit 2TB (as opposed to a G5 standard HD of 60GB) is pretty amazing.Al l did was create a new folder for each machine and copied and pasted in files to back up so simple as it could be. Worked well on my HP laptop for backing up files, so this is a really useful thing to have. I will buy another as a backup part 2 as it is such a good unit.Highly recommend it.

Firstly congratulations to Amazon for sending replacements the next day. i was impressed with that. Secondly, I ordered two disks and only wanted to return the faulty one but had to send back both and have two replacements. I noted that the instructions said, "Must be in pristine condition" and if you have ever tried to unpack a Verbatim disk, plug it in and try it out - you will know that just getting it out of the packaging is a trial. The two replacement disks work but I wonder whether they will last as the socket for the USB3 plug does not seem robust.

Previously I purchased an unnamed storage product it was cheaper until I found out later it was unreliable, kept failing...I wasn't expecting this product to be so good. I am installing Windows 10 on my laptop therefore I need storage before I flatten my machine...this product is light and the speed transferring and retreiving is the best I've experienced, the USB lead is short but I prefer that, easy to carry around and seems tough

I do like external hard drives. I think that they are a great invention. The fact that they do not need their own separate power supply anymore is a bonus as well. This drive works fine. If has various media types on it and plays them all no problem. It is still working fine in May 2016. You lose a little storage due to the internal set up of the device, but given the space on it you could store quite a lot on it.

This has to be the best external memory I have ever used. Not only has it Usb 3.0 for amazing write times but it is so slim and finished to the highest standard. It looks incredible. One of the best products I have purchased from amazon. Without a doubt I will be purchasing verbatim products again. Cable is pretty long (30 - 40cm) just in case you got a tower and your ports are in the middle or at the top.

Used this to create back up image of reinstalled Windows XP. Full back up possible using supplied Nero software. Checked it worked by fully restoring the laptop. Worked a treat. Windows 7 owners could achieve this with Windows back up software. This is, however, not the only benefit of the Store 'n' Go. It is very compact and good value for a 1TB portable drive.

I have several of these Verbatim drives. I'm a wedding photographer so need a lot of storage space. All of mine are still working and have had no issues. The oldest is about 4 years old now. I buy them in different colours so I can tell them apart easily. I need Verbatim to make more colours now as I think silver has completed my set of available options!

The hard disk is great, very fast with the USB3 and its backwards compatible Good and seems well made. Only thing stopping it getting 5 star is the connector on the device end of the cable. Its not a USB type of connector it, so you have to use the supplied cable, it would have been nice if it used a type of USB connector.

Great little external drive. Came with a silly 1ft cable though so for use on my tower pc (under a desk with usb3 ports at rear) to get files I had to order some extension cables (only 1 needed but I have another tower PC elsewhere so gonna leave cable in) however it's fast/small works great.

15.2.2017

It works. Very fast really. Copying from it to my laptop it reached 90 MB/s but it was half plenty. I hope it keeps on going so fast! Mind that it's very little it's 14 cm x 9 cm. Perfect. It's my third verbatim external hard disk, I would say, go for it have no doubts.
