I went with the red 40l. This bag has been pretty damn amazing. It is the best kick around convertible duffle/pack ever. I actually prefer to wear it on my back with the bottom of the duffle against my back. I guess I don’t want the black facing out like it shows in the images. And - I almost didn’t buy it because I didn’t want to buy it if it was only comfortable with the black side facing out. I can say it is just as comfortable either way and confirm it if anyone else was wondering.A few other points I’d mention/ but cannot even take a single star away for-1) Pro- it’s very!!! waterproof!!It’s amazing at the Ymca pool even on the floor where every swim team athlete is doing flip turns...But it doesn’t have a wet clothes compartment if your wet/ sweaty clothes are in the bag and you leave it in your car or wherever (while at work after the gym like meeee...) the entire bag is a damp hot baked potato inside when you open it up later.Tip- Because I button back my duffle straps I’ve actually used them to weave my towel through or snap my swim suit and carry wet or whatever items on the outside of my bag sometimes.Or.... make sure you use an alternative wet item specific bag. I don’t even think I’d prefer a built in one because I’d rather continuously wash my wet item bag anyway.2) Pro- the D pocket entry flap on this 40l is pretty great for storing a looooot more stuff than you can assume from the images.Tip- initially out of the box the zippers are stiffer and you might think it’s a little annoying to zip quick but it does break in after a little while and the zippers are not as stiff they start to move better without wrestling.Maybe a minor con- you can put quite a bit in the D flap pocket... sometimes the weight of what you put in there is annoying when you’re getting in and out of your bag.. not worth taking away any stars.3) Pro- The small external zip pocket on the top of the bag looks small in the images but it’s pretty deceiving. For perspective I can fit 4 full size deodorants in the pocket plus my 7plus iPhone and car keys.**What I do really think would have taken this bag to the next level**I wish... in the main internal compartment of the bag some side pockets were offered on the long sides and even at the base so that I could better organize my things. When I wear the bag as a backpack everything in it settles to the small of my back anyway and then the items become an unorganized pile of stuff.Again I wouldn’t take a star for it... it would propel this bag to the next level though in my opinion. If I could add anything else. Maybe a z-stap and buckle so that thinks could be held on externally like a towel or a hoodie. And possibly for a women’s fram it’s nice to have a chest strap as on because depending on how narrow your shoulders are it can improve the fit near the armpits pulling the straps in towards each other.I do like to add a carabiner to my bags...Oh and I’m also 5’4” 135lb female, highly active the 40l bag sits from the base of my neck and ends right at my pant line- maybe I’ll attach some photos. I wish the images also showed the bag on a female frame. The shoulder straps are comfortable. I’ve hade the bag loaded with 3 pairs of running shoes, a work outfit, casual shoes, jump rope, wrist wraps my goggles, cap, ear plug boxes, workout journal, some snacks, extra workout pants tanks and bras, wooden handstand blocks 3x3x4, hand chalk, a small hygiene kit, and towel and didn’t even bat an eyelash trying to zip it. I still had more space.Last thing I’ll mention and I almost feel meh- stupid. The back pack straps double as the duffle strap.. I’m not sure if it’s written anywhere. Initially I thought I didn’t receive one and hardly cared anyway till daysssssss later it was some sort of massive realization out of no where. I’m pretty happy I didn’t write to the company saying I was missing one. Not my finest moment but in case the struggle is experienced by others. It’s probably written somewhere in the product description. ??‍♀️

***Review for 40L bag***Thule has put a lot of effort into this bag. Everything has been thought out and the materials are tough. It is very well made. Unfortunately, what works on the larger 90L and 130L bags is overkill and crowded on a 40L bag. This size is a bit larger than a day pack. For some people this might be a weekend trip bag; for others it is enough space for a week-long trip.I like the large top load opening. I appreciate the flexibility that has been built into the backpack straps. The method for securing them is entirely sound and easy to adjust. The zippers are YKK and have cord pulls. There are two interior mesh pockets under the top flap. It has four compression straps.Unfortunately, the waterproof materials make the bag stiff and unyielding (think typical dry-bag material), more so because this is such a modestly sized bag. The weatherproof zipper on the end pocket moves grudgingly. I find myself fighting the bag. If you don't require a weatherproof bag, I would not spend the extra money for these features.I think the feature set of this bag make the most sense in the larger sizes where there is room to fit all of the straps and buckles, and where the stiffness of the material is countered by the size of the panels.

This bag may look like a gym bag from the pictures, but it's far more than that. When you actually see it, you realize it bears little resemblance to any gym bag you might have ever had. It's very, very heavy duty, the kind of material that feels like it will last a very long time. The zippers are thick and well made, with climber type pulls at the ends of them. The bag opens up to give tons of space, plenty for a long weekend away. There are two mesh inside zip pockets, as well as an outside zip pocket. This actually can be either a bag or a backpack. There are removable backpack straps, and it would look good and work well as a backpack.I think this would be perfect for giving to someone heading to college. They could fit a lot into it for the moving in time, and then have it there for any weekends away, or for taking to the gym, or even for carrying loads of books to class. When it wasn't being used, it could be stored without taking up much room at all. It's so nice to see a product that is this well made, and to know you'll get a huge amount of use from it!

This bag just breathes quality! From the moment I opened the box to the last check, it felt really good. When you open the box, it comes rolled up in a mesh bag. I think it is a nice touch though putting a bag in a bag sounds silly. Then the plastic is of very solid plastic, the one you would find on fishing boats type of. Very water resistant. The zipper is huge and the top of the bag goes over it as a kind of a rooftop (for lack of other terms) to prevent the water to drip onto the zipper. At 40L the size is not that large by itself but it is a perfect bag to take with you where you are likely to encounter rain or lots of water. It comes with 2 backpack handles that are easy to install or remove. The bottom part of the bag is made of heavy and solid fabric, not plastic. That is the part your back is supposed to come in contact with when carryting it as a backpack. It has two more pockets openable from the outside and the inside has two more mesh pockets.

The 40L bag from Thule is the perfect size for weekend getaways. The name "chasm" is an apt descriptor because this bag holds A LOT of stuff. (I couldn't resist showing how well my 11-pound Tibetan spaniel fits inside with plenty of room to spare!) The wide mouth opening makes for easy access and I find the small exterior pocket and the two zippered mesh pockets located on the underside of the top flap especially useful. The bag's waterproof tarpaulin fabric has a substantial feel and should last for many years. The zippers appear to be very sturdy and open and close easily. While I'm not much of a backpacker, I appreciate the fact the Chasm comes equipped with removable backpack straps in addition to the duffel handles. The red feather/orange color combo, while definitely not for the meek, is a welcome change from basic black. It will be hard to lose this bag on an airport luggage carousel.

I have used products from Thule more than several times and have been completely satisfied with all of those. And this item, the Thule chasm bag was no exception. This duffel bag was the most versatile bag I have ever had. I could have several different configurations based on my usage such as making a backpack or a shoulder bag. The straps of the bags could be positioned in different ways and the strap was looking very strong. The finish was a top-notch and the material used for the bag was tough and waterproof. The large top opening of the bag made me easy to pack lot of stuff at once, and the bag was not stiff. And the capacity of 40L was perfect for me.So the bag instantly became my first choice of a business trip.I hope this bag lasts long like other Thule products I have had. Perfect bag for me.

I recently used this as an overnight bag. It is large enough to contain a change of clothes, a pair of shoes, shaving kit, a couple of books and other small items. The main compartment is roomy and there are small zipper-closing compartments as well. I used one for sunglasses and iPod, charging cable, etc. This would also work well as a gym bag...clothes, shoes and other sports gear. The bag comes with standard carry straps, but it also surprisingly comes with hand carry straps (think backpack straps) and a single shoulder strap as well. The construction is solid and the zippers are heavy-duty and should last a long time.As long as the bag anyway. All in all a nice addition to our family assortment of carry-bags.

I am a big fan of quality, high end travel bags such as Tumi (just so that you know my standards). I've never owned this particular brand before, but I can say wholeheartedly that this Thule Chasm Bag is a killer workhorse of a duffel bag! The quality is definitely here without breaking the bank too much. It feel like it will hold up well to any sort of harsh conditions or abuse and it also looks great. The bright red/orange color is quite striking. It has all the versatility that you could ask for- carry it horizontaly or vertically in your hands, toss it over your shoulders or even wear it as a backpack. I will be ordering another in a different size.

Being a 40L bag it’s being enough to still be a carry-on and the bag itself definitely has more room than I expected. It can easily hold 2/3 days worth of clothes

Very happy with this purchase. Big enough for a few days away, probably don't need it to be waterproof often.
