This bag is impressive and very thick, rugged material was used in crafting it. The zippers are chunky with good pulls and have not snagged or stopped as of yet. I have packed it to maximum capacity, it's very roomy (the Large). I have used it for photo/video/audio/drone gear when filming out in the field. Packed it full with clothes. And just random stuff when I take drives out of town or to and from here and there. I've thrown it down snow banks, over snow mounds, into deep snow in general. It's been tossed in and out of my jeep many times. The compartment on the end is good for small stuff, trinkets, knives, earbuds, gum, toothpaste, toiletries, polaroids, tools, batteries, keys, etc. There is a mesh pocket within that keeps more valuable or small things in a mesh net pocket for easier separation and location of items. There's a mesh zipper lining under the main flap, to also keep things like small things, snacks, keys. I also keep a pair of my girlfriend's panties in it for when i'm away on trips and start to miss her. The bottom is double lined, reinforced with a thick ballistic canvas. I am tempted to put a bunch of sticks and dirt in the bag and drag it by a rope out the back of my jeep just to prove its rugged durability, but i'll refrain from doing that. The TNF black looks good, classic. Those other extravagant color schemes and designs aren't really something i'd use, although i've considered getting a second one in a different color to tell them apart, such as the black with spruce green trim, or the grey or something. Also considered getting one size up (the XL) since I tend to carry a lot of stuff on adventures, weekend trips, and driving back and forth from my apartment in the mountains, to visiting friends and family in the city on the weekends, etc. I think two would be good for my traveling. One with my camera/video/audio/drone gear in it, and the other with clothes, and usual personal items and whatnot. Anyway this bag is definitely worth buying

North Face Base Camp Duffle Small I've had this bag for longer than I can remember, I bought it back when I was in the Navy out in VA and it's been my go to bag for everything since I've had it... One of its functions over the years has been my motorcycle bag for the several different bikes l've had and it was usually held on by a bungie cord most of the time. Well since bungie cords sometimes tend to let go when you least expect, especially when in a hurry to get to work, the bag has rolled down the highway a few times. Twice before I noticed the moment it let go and was off the throttle right away and able to run back to grab it with nothing more than dirt and a few scuff marks to show for its 60+ mph tumble down the road...This last time I wasn't so lucky.... 0450 I get to work, reach back for my bag and it's gone!!! My stomach dropped... I hopped on the bike and raced back to get it.... This time when I'd gotten to the bag it had been run over, possibly more than once, even though it's bright yellow!?!? My lunch bag and all its contents had exploded inside the bag and my favorite coffee mug was flattened and shrapnel of all its parts were floating around with my extra riding gloves... With liquid dripping out I strapped it back on the bike and headed off to work... No coffee for me that morning... That night I get home and after a good rinse and a run through the washing machine it's still usable!!! List of its injuries: Two of the plastic cinch buckles broke, one for a shoulder strap the other for one of the cinch straps, the plastic key there's a small hole in the bottom along a seam that let go, next to a cut in the black Cardura, not all the way through the bag, but this "is" where the metal coffee cup was flattened in its defense, a few more scuff marks and a couple oil stains that didn't come out in the wash... All in all y'all make a very tough bag!!! Thanks! Todd

I ordered the Medium sized base camp bag to use as a cabin bag when travelling. When I looked at the prices I wasn't too enamoured with it but for the reputable TNF brand I decided to bite the bullet. I have since used the bag in a ski trip where I managed to pack all of my clothes for 5 days away (Pub clothes, sportswear, nightwear, footwear and underwear), as well as a pair salopettes and two skiing jackets within the bag. This and still with room to spare (see photo). The bag is made of a tough plastic which when empty, is difficult to shape and open up but shows its quality when it's full and being dragged around. The straps on the shoulders are comfortable and used as my main means of carrying. There is also a hand strap which allows you to carry it like a duffel bag. Due to the bag still having about 3 inch of space in it from the top to my items I appreciated the straps on the side of the bag which allowed me to compress down the bag and stop all my carefully packed clothes from being tossed around. A few key features I found when using the bag is the two handes at either side, this is handy when trying to free the bag when it is packed under other items as well as a general carry handle. All of the zips have a means to be padlocked together which gives peace of mind if and when it was to be put in the hold of the plane or on a luggage rack in transit. Mesh pockets on the inside are tough and sizeable on this bag. The bag is easy to clean, due to it being plastic a wipe and dry with a cloth has been suffice for me. One adaption I have since made is the addition of a chest clip onto the shoulder straps. Most of my rucksacks have this and I felt it a good addition, perhaps if TNF had done this I would have been even happier with the bag.

I work in advertising and commercial videography/photography by trade, and as a consequence, I've been all over the world many times with my NF duffs riding shotgun. From the deserts of Dubai, to the Alps of the Swiss, these bags just work. In terms of their utility, there is simply no other bag that is as utilitarian. Lightweight from the start, they allow me to pack more gear. Of course, because of their volumetric exceptionalism, it's not hard to overfill them - it's a double edged sword really. Perhaps that's the only downside, hauling these beasts around fully stuffed. #selfcontrol #whatsthat I currently own two large, one XL, and a Rolling Thunder 30. In terms of construction quality and durability, you can treat these bags like absolute sh#@ and they just lift their middle finger and flash you a grin in response. It's fantastic. Also worth noting, is their completely flat/rolled (user's choice) form factor when empty. I store my three duffs inside of my Rolling Thunder 30 when not in use. So four bags taking up the space of one - great for tight spaces. ;) They also make you seem way more interesting than you actually are. For example, when I walk through many airports with them in tow, I am often stopped and asked what kind of insane "adventure" I'm off to/coming from. I think there is still a solid stereotype worldwide that North Face gear, especially duffles, means you scale the side of death defying remote mountaintops in far off lands for fun. When you answer, "Nah, just visiting family in Kalamazoo," the looks of confusion are worth their weight in gold. Ha. So, in summary... buy a North Face Base Camp and not only can you fit all your sh@# inside of it, you instantly become way more cool than you actually are. #NFDuffsFTW

I am going away for a couple of weeks this year and I also go sailing - so I was considering a new sailing bag. For sometime I've used my wheeled Antler holdall, which is great on flat clean surfaces, but not so good for carrying (stairs!), or indeed inside a boat due to its rigid base.I was originally thinking of a Gill or Musto (well known sailing brands) until I hit upon these duffels. I've now bought a Large size (sailing involves wellies, big waterproofs, sleeping bags etc - bulky stuff, if not that heavy), and I think it will be great for general travelling as well. The quality of construction looks top notch. I got this in Jan 2020, and I believe it is the new version (the previous one did not have normal carry handles)- this has proper carry handles, a large separate zipped compartment on the end, rucksac straps, and external straps for cinching down the entire bag (rather than straps inside that only ever press down on your socks). It also has a zipped net compartment under the lid, and an internal unzipped one at the end. There are no feet or other sharp things that may mark car seats, so it will also be my preferred bag if I know it will be thrown on the back seat. It also comes with a net bag for storing it in - it folds down pretty flat, so you could even take it within a piece of luggage, or collapse it at your destination, unlike a rigid bag.It looks like I've ended up with a bag that is a good contrast to my wheeled bag, and which I can use for all kinds of travel, including sailing, skiing, camping or car tours. Hopefully it will last a very long time, as realistically I will not be dragging it on a sledge in the Arctic, although it feels like it would take it.

I am so happy that I purchased this bag, I absolutely love it! I needed something that could transition pretty seamlessly into my work, workout, and personal use. I work from 8-4:30 and vary btw going to the gym before or after work. I've been able to fit my clothes rolled up in a rumble roller, a towel, toiletry bag, travel hair dryer, my Game of Thrones book, lunch bag, and small accessories bag (for my work badge, USB stick, cash, etc) to and from work and the gym. I hang a master lock off one of the daisy chains. I also spend the weekends at my BF's who loved 45 min away, so I've been able to pack a weekend's worth of clothes, toiletries, my laptop, work stuff, and my knitting! There's an inside pocket that I can use for my phone, headphones, and other loose knick-knacks. The outside pocket is pretty small (can't fit an iPhone 6 Plus), so I just use it for my keys. The straps are super comfy. Sometimes they tighten if I accidentally sit on it on the bus, but they're easily re-adjustable, and they never loosen when I'm actually wearing the bag as a backpack. I've also gotten a lot of compliments on the bag! The XS is the perfect size for my needs. My one disclaimer, if you can call it that, is that I'm 5', so as my BF puts it, all my things are small. He's 6'5" and uses the S, which is perfect for his needs. We've both used our bags for airplane travel and they're very durable. When packed to the brim, the XS can still fit in the upper cabinets of the plane if you're using it as your carry-on. It was harder to fit the S, so that was best to be checked.

Overall, this is a really good bag. I like that it's waterproof and it can take a beating without getting beat up. It's really durable. And it comes in a wide range of colors. I use this for a gym bag to hold all of my weightlifting and power-lifting gear. I also will use it for weekend trips, etc. I would suggest two improvements to this bag. First, the straps could really use some work. Not the shoulder strap (that's fine), but the straps used to support the bag. They're REALLY flimsy and they twist too easily, which means you end up with a hard, thin, twisted cord instead of the wider strap that it should be. I'm always having to stop and untwist the straps, which is really annoying. That's how I discovered that the straps are not as easily adjustable as they should be for a bag at this price, which surprised me. The second recommendation I would make is to add another panel pocket inside the bag. My bag only has one small zipped pocket, and it's one the "lid" of the bag. I wish there was a second zipper panel inside along the sides somewhere because when I carry my bag (which is always full of gear) everything goes to the bottom of the bag. So when I need to find something, I have to pull everything out of the bag until I put my hand on what I'm looking for. Another inside pocket would make it much easier to organize the contents of the bag. Other than the sub-par straps and my desire for another pocket, it's a great bag that I think will hold up for a long time.

I'm usually a minimalist. But there are a few adventures left in the world where light is too light. When your bag has to be tied to a yak for a few days or dragged out of a huge pile of gear on the airport tarmac, something like this duffel -- tough, durable, heavy, nearly indistructable -- is the only thing that is likely to survive without a split seam or rip. I've owned the old and new designs and -- to join in the current debate -- I like the new one better. Those carry handles in the old version? Perfect for hitting you in the back in backpack mode. But how can you haul the new version by hand? Use the handles on the side. They work better because the whole bag is closer to your body in that orientation. To each his own, but to me new is an improvement. Are they perfect? Nope. They're not fully waterproof. Put everything inside in dry bags or trash-compactor bags to be safe. And the compression straps can get caught in airport conveyor belts. Tie them up and out of the way. And since they are somewhat cylindrical they can sometimes roll around a bit in the back of the car (squarer is better there). But they are still tougher than anything else out there. They'll hold most any weight (maybe more than you can carry easily) without splitting. And the smallest two sizes are great carry-on. They've been tested for decades. They pass the test.

Just got back from a 3 week European journey using only this bag and it was perfect for my trekking and carry-on needs! If you're debating between this size or the medium size for carry-on use, I would highly recommend getting this small size as anything larger would have been required to be checked. Fit perfectly in both the major airline carry on testers as well as the smaller airline testers that I used to hop from country to country. If you're a minimalist like me, you can easily fit all you'd need in this bag for a 2-3 week hostel/hotel based journey. Very easy to pack and carry. Extended treks can become slightly uncomfortable as the shoulder straps aren't extremely padded.I've walked up to about 20 kilometers with this bag on my back and I noticed shoulder soreness about halfway through. I definitely wouldn't recommend it for extended backcountry trips as it's not comfortable or large enough for camp gear and clothes/equipment. Also, I'm not extremely confident in its waterproofing/repellent capabilities as some of my clothes inside were wet after walking about 5km in medium to heavy rain. The contents did stay dry through a lot of light rain, however. Overall, I have no regrets purchasing this bag and would definitely recommend it to anyone using it as described above!

The bag itself looks sleek. I purchasef the full black duffel. The black doesn't present itself as one of those blacks that make anything look cheap regardless of the price. It's the type of black that hits the "cool kids" spot. The zippers didn't snag. But it was hard to get too if you had the zippers on the sides due to the flaps covering it. It wasn't an issue if the were placed in the middle though. The straps to use as a bagpack was a legit idea. It made the bag so much more convenient. When it was heavy i'd just put it on my back. Of course it was confortable. North face bags are known for being easy on your back. But when I wanted to put thing in the bag the straps were in the way.I had to loosen them to put things inside. And it felt a little weird using them to carry the bag as a shoulder strap. All the daisy chains and handles over the bag are great. I like hooking things on to them. And being able to grab the bag from any side. All in all. If you're thinking about purchasing the bag then stop thinking. Just buy it. If you don't have the dinero then go ask santa or whatever floats your boat.

My boyfriend got me the medium for my birthday. I only have large rolling suitcases for my trips to Japan. He knew I wouldn't buy something like this for myself so he got me one for my birthday so I could take it to Maui for a long weekend. I am here in Maui and I love it! It's perfect and so durable. We did an inter island flight and there were some showers when our bags were going to the plane but I was not worried because I knew my stuff was safe. A very comforting feeling. I am not a very outdoorsy girl but I loved the style. (He hot me the white with pink and blue pattern). It is totally my style. It was big enough to haul my stuff plus I have room to bring back things if I want.I was even able to carry it on. I might not be able to if I maxed it out but I kept it simple for a 4 day trip WITH extra shoes and makeup. Great purchase. So good the when I first got it and showed my friend. She decided to get one too. It's durable material makes it a great combo of fashion and function. Great product! It also folds up nice for easy storage, just remember how you receive it so it's easier to reproduce.

I have a pair of the Blackhole duffles in purple that I've owned since 2010. I have the medium as a check in bag and the small as my carry on. I am a woman of 5'4", 106lbs, athletic built and carrying the medium- fully packed is a bit much for me. The straps are not comfortable should you need to walk far with it on your back but as check in luggage it is absolutely perfect. It fits a month's worth of clothes and essentials with room to spare for souvenirs and stuff you may pick up on your travels. One thing the blackhole excels on I say durability. I've packed climbing and diving fear in it, had it manhandled in airports, busses, trains, boats and jeepneys through Southeast Asia, Europe,Australia and North America and it still looks awesome. It has scuffs here and there but overall it has held up well. It I still expensive but really, considering I'm close to getting 10 years worth of rough travelling with these babies, it is absolutely worth it!

Base camp duffels have been my go-to bags for travel for several years now. I'v had a Medium and XS bag, and just recently purchased this Small bag. The Small bag that I received most recently is slightly different than my older bags: the shoulder straps are a little bigger, and there is no "centered" handle. The older bags had a 2-sided handle that could be connected over the top of the bag, which, when connected, covered the bag's opening, making it awkward to open. The new style replaces this arrangement with 1 handle on either side of the duffel, and it's much nicer to me. I have been using the XS bag as a gym bag and a carry-on bag for years, and it's ideal,if just slightly smaller than the maximum allowable carry-on size. I've found that I want just a little more room for some of my longer trips. So I've added the Small bag to my arsenal. It seems like the ideal size to me, and I can't wait to travel with it for the first time this week.

For a trip to cancun with 2 kids, I used 1 medium and 2 small sized duffels. All our stuff for the 7 day adventure, plus extra stuff for wedding clothes, accessories and shoes, fit beautifully. Very sturdy, stands out on the baggage carousel. Both sizes fit great as carry on in the overhead bins. Note that the medium was not filled to absolute full capacity, otherwise would possibly not fit, especially if traveling on a smaller jet. Loved the bag and the ease of travel with a "backpack", especially when running through an airport to make a connecting flight. My only complaint was that the shoulder straps would be exponentially more comfortable if they were padded. It made standing in those long airport lines a pain, especially with the medium. The small sizes didn't bother as much as they simply hold less weight, but TNF should look into padding the medium and larger sizes due to the additional weight they can allow you to carry.

I frickin' love this bag. Walked out of the airport in Ketchikan, Alaska, and onto an open fishing boat. This bag was tossed on the deck and stayed there for hours in rain, sea spray from the moving boat, dripping saltwater from the nets, flopping fish and spilled beer. Here's a photo of the bag in the boat while we were halibut fishing. Then we got a few rockfish. Then we pulled the shrimp pots. Then we pulled the crab pots. Then we had the greatest meal ever enjoyed by human beings under the shelter of ancient cedar trees on a small island in the rain. Then I enjoyed the kind of deep sleep only found in the silence of a forest with sleeping bag, clothes and gear that was bone-dry thanks to this awesome bag.Days later, on my long walk up from the dock back to the airport, I simply shouldered this bag with its backpack straps and had a very nice stroll - hands-free and grinning ear-to-ear.
