I don't know who has more bags now my wife with her handbags or me with camera bags. Yes it's fair to say I have a few camera bags but then I'm a professional and each bag has its own use.If you want maximum protection for you camera kit from being dropped or you want to go hiking up a mountain then this bag isn't for you. The Thinktank retrospective range wasn't designed for being dropped it was designed for being used by professionals who don't want to get noticed but wants to be able to get to his equipment in a hurry.First impressions were this is a great bag but will everything fit. When I got the bag I couldn't help thinking was how nice everything about it was and the longer I have had it the better it gets.To start it's thick but soft canvas which wraps around the body, it doesn't look like something which came out the army navy surplus but it equally doesn't look out of place when you want to look a bit smart. I've got the pinestone gray green and can walk on a beach with shorts or in a city with a suit on. I needed something which really looked nothing like a camera bag, in fact most of the time I've a toy giraffe attached to the outside and now it looks like a nappy changing bag which for me is great.I wanted a bag for carrying my gear at weddings and a bag I could use in cities when travelling. I've found I can't get away with one camera body at weddings and there always comes a point where I have to put my bag down somewhere. I thought I was going to need the larger retrospective 30 bag as I have a lot of kit I wanted to be able to carry around but no when I went in and tried it I was surprised. This bag really works for me as like I say it looks nothing like a camera bag with expensive gear in.The soft fabric thin padding and front pocket mean that you can get loads in and I mean loads. The front pocket can take a full size canon 1ds body or body and grip. Inside I managed with a bit of shuffling to get in a 70-200mm f2.8 IS a 16-35mm f2.8 a 50mm f1.2 an 85mm f1.2 5Dmk2 with 24-70mm f2.8 attached all with hoods plus a 580ex flash inside, then in the front pocket I've a 1ds mk2 body and a ST-E2 wireless flash trigger.Admittedly with that lot in it, it is tight, not to mention heavy and if I was using that every day I'd use my rucksack but it's still workable at weddings. after all at weddings most of the time I have at least one body and lens around my neck. If your only use is weddings or events working with one body I think you'd be better off with a the lens changing bag.Travelling it's even better. Because it's soft it folds down and goes in my suitcase with my photo rucksack as carry on then when I want to go out I have my 5Dmk2 body my 16-35mm, or 24-105mm, plus a 70-200 f4IS 1.4 x convertor and a 50mm f1.4 and there's room for a water bottle and a sandwich.A couple of things I should mention,1. The retrospective 20 I've got will take a full size 1ds body with 70-200mm f2.8 IS attached (hood reversed) if you want it to.2. The bottom padding isn't great on this bag, as you put it down you can hear the end of the lens on the ground, I knew about this from other reviews before I bought it but as the overall quality was so high felt it was still worth it. I've added a bit of padding from a camping mat under the original.3. There are Velcro silencers so you don't get that ripping sound when you open the bag up, nice touch in a church or some music hall.4. The pockets are really well thought out none of this where everything falls out on the floor when you unzip them. Separate foldaway pockets for flashguns, filters pocket is just the right size, wallet and phone pocket is easy to get to, and pockets on the side for a ipod or digital photo bank. Oh yeah and a back pocket you could get a reflector in but comfortably holds an ipad in its sleeve.5. There's two straps on the end I didn't get these at first seeming useless actually they are really handy as your walking you can grab hold of one or you can clip things to them, like the Billingham pouches or a flash or extra lens pocket, water bottle that sort of thing. I don't know if think tank are planning on adding additional pouches to their range to expand theses bags.6. The shoulder pad is very comfortable and grips well. Unlike most it's soft and wraps around nicely rather than the stiff leather or plastic you get with some bags.7. There's a silly little weatherproof bag which clips on guess it's a good idea, me I'd rather have an umbrella.Other bags I looked at and tried,I tried some of the Billingham bags loved the quality disliked the price and weight. The Crumpler 8 million dollar was a nice but Crumpler name has become to associated with camera bags and the good bigger bags like the 8 million dollar are hard to get hold of in the uk. The Domke bags I couldn't get on with the complete lack of padding and the styling wasn't as good as the Thinktank. The lowepro messenger bags looked to much like a laptop bag for me and the Thinktank urban disguise range had a similar laptop bag look about them for me although they did have a tripod strap on the bottom.Remember never leave a bag left in a hot car without the window open and a bag is for Christmas not for life, although I think I'll be using this for a long time.

I seem to acquire bags for my cameras on a regular basis, sometimes I think they might be breeding! I have a Billingham that I bought over 25 years ago, a Kata rucksack and a couple of Crumpler bags.I've had this bag for a while but have only just got around to using it on a trip for a week, I have to say I'm really impressed.I used this bag to take my Sony NEX6, Zeiss 24-70mm, Sony 17-55mm, and Sony LA-EA2 adaptor. Also packed in was my ipad, 2 smart phones, passport, sunglases (in large case) Ipad charger, 3 cables, B & W P5 headphones and small 1020 pelicase. There was enough room to add a Minolta 50mm F1.7 lens, spare battery and spare memory card. They was even enough room to take my wallet, car and house keys, I could have added more in...I just ran out of things to put in it. Oh and a couple of cereal bars in the outside pockets. There are plenty of pockets, the one on the back was large enough to take my ipad in it's case as well as my travel documents. What I also love about this case is that there are enough pockets so that you can put everything away securely and protected well. Sometimes I forgot which pocket I put things in but as long as I was organised enough I found it very easy to lay my hands on anything I need. I love the wide strap and shoulder pad at no point did I think it was heavy although it weighed in at 5Kg. I also like the key holder, a small strap and clip that you can put your key-rings on. The hidden pockets inside the main compartment are cavernous but can be awkward to get too if the main cavity is stuffed with camera gear.It easily fits airline carry on allowances and looks cool too, I didn't even find the velcro closing/opening system worrying, I thought I wouldn't like the fact that there are no clips but I was pleasantly surprised. Anyone attempting to open the flip is greeting by a very loud ripping sound that gives them away.I was also really surprised by the finish of the bag, I didn't think I'd like it but I'm happy to say it's grown on me and I like how soft it is and how appealing the weathered look is.Now the downsides...The rain cover, great that one is included but I'd like it better if the bag was waterproof without it because putting it on can be awkward in a rain shower. That said I did get caught in a shower for 5 mins and got away without using it.Protection, although I didn't have a problem I think this bag could do with a bit more protection on the bottom, it's not padded quite enough.Pity I can't give 4 1/2 stars.

Recently i bought quite a lot of camera equipment. To keep them together in a safe way i also bought Lowepro Vertex 100 (which i am very happy with it too). But what Lowepro is missing, Think Tank capitalises it. Which is the design.Functionality comes first and Think Tank Retrospective is a winner. You can adjust with dividers the way you want it. More than enough pockets! Silencer for the velcro is just genius. Used it in a church! Also everything feels great. From the material to workmanship, everything feels right. But what i always felt with Lowepro is that they just didn't care about the design. Almost like some very conservative guy with no sense of adventure was the chief of design!Well now i understand why Think Tank products are such a hit.... Quality product with functionality and looks. Perfect combination...Just a couple of warnings, first, in my opinion this is not a bag to keep things perfectly protected when you travel by an airplane for example (Vertex has better cushioning for that purpose!). This is a secondary bag that doesn't attract any attention to an expensive gear that you carry when you're at work. But not enough protection to throw around (So be careful when you put it on to the floor!). Second, don't forget that if you put 70-200mm IS II L, 24-70mm and 5D mark II (which is what i usually carry) it still is quite heavy. Padding on the shoulder strap is perfect but if you do carry for a long time it still makes you tired...To sum it up, I've used Lowepro for more than 15 years but after using Think Tank Retrospective for the first time, i know what my next purchase will be!
