For a while now I've been using a Fujitsu dock to connect my desk based network, USB Keyboard, Mouse and CD-Rom, monitor, speakers etc... to my laptop via just one USB3 connection. It works quite well, and soon becomes clear that my model is sold under various brand names including StarTech, and that the software and reference design come from a company called DisplayLink. The picture on the monitor and network speed are excellent - when it works. The software has a very annoying function in that it will ONLY run and appear on the desktop IF the dock is correctly seen, so leaves nothing but hair-tearing when it comes to troubleshooting.I regularly have to disconnect the USB3 and power-cycle the unit to get the screen back - and that's with the latest (generic) software release and firmware update. When it works, it's amazing, when it doesn't, it's frustrating. The 'Targus' branded unit is a little different, needing no power supply if the USB port is able to supply enough juice (my other model needs a fairly hefty 12V PSU) and so far seems more reliable - in fact I often do wonder if the problems with the other model I already have are mostly caused by power and multiple earthing; especially as it manages to 'self power' though a USB hub sometimes, even though this should not happen. In 48 hours I have not needed to reboot the Targus unit, which I assume is much newer hardware, and it offers the usual HDMI, network, and also VGA ports. A 5V micro USB socket is available if needed, as is a USB3 'passthrough'. It's early days but I suspect this hardware revision is a lot more reliable than previous models, and look forward to trying it on a mac soon. At half the price of my existing unit, highly recommended.

The Targus generic docking station (product id DOCK110EUZ) is a pocket-sized portable docking station for PCs or Macs. It plugs into a USB port and offers a number of peripheral ports:- 2 x USB 3.0 port- Gigabit Ethernet port- HDMI (for connection to TV)- VGA (for monitor)The unit has USB plug on a short lead, for connecting to the host laptop. There is also a micro-USB input so that you can power the hub externally from a 5V supply. No 5V power supply is provided by Targus, but it doesn't seem to be necessary as it can draw power from the host USB.Installing on Windows (in this case 10) was straightforward: Plug 'N' Play automatically installs the necessary drivers. A few moments later,it's possible to see a picture on the new monitor. On Mac it's less straightforward: you need to visit the Targus website (support page) and download and install the Mac driver (and reboot!) before the screen will be recognized. I briefly tried the HDMI port connected to the TV and this seemed to work fine. The documentation suggest that you can also install on Android, and the website has Ubuntu drivers available; I did not try either of these. The box contains a nearly useless manual, which includes a web link to an online manual. This web link points at the Targus website, but the link is broken, and in fact you have to go and hunt around to find a PDF manual. This manual has two sides of information in a number of languages. I think that since this product sometimes needs drivers, and it's useful to have a manual when things go wrong, they would be better to dispose of the useless handbook, and instead provide drivers and manual on a CD.

This dock has a great selection of ports, and adaptors to allow connection via VGA, HDMI or DVI. Works a treat with my Win 7 laptop.
