Ok so for the record - I have never actually played any of the Tales of series before. Mostly just due to my not gaming much as a kid. So I come into this game with no reference of the series as a whole. As another note: I've not finished the story yetm in fact im only about 20 hours in so bear that in mind when reading this review.Overall I have enjoyed the game so far. While the characters are somewhat cliched, they are nether-the-less well fleshed out as characters. The story is a intresting spin on the usual JRPG theme of teenagers-using-the-power-of-friendship-to-kill-God thing, with the main plot device being the restoring of a young womans soul after it was shattered and spread throughout the world. The plot is well written, and its well paced with the story talking its time to explain things without dragging on for too long.As for the gameplay, after a bit of research it seems quite similar to the other Tales of games. The battles enable you to freely move the main character around the battle arena while chaing combos and skills. Your party characters are controlled by the computer, with you setting up their behaviour by altering each characters "stragegy". This lets you set NPC behaviour, so for instance you can set characters to mostly heal your or go on the offensive. This enables some flexability, but you can only change these stragegy's outside of battles. Like a lot of RPGS, there are random encounters along with scripted boss fights, and a world map screen that you use to transverse between the towns and major locations. The leveling system is based on a characters "Soma" which forms their weapon. When you level up, you gain points that you can then allocated to the characters Soma. There are 5 attributes you can focus on, and 5 skills for each attribute. You can gain additional skills by balancing the attributes you level, although I'm not 100% clear on exactly how this is worked out. I have done this more by luck than planning, mostly because I tend to play with balanced characters. It does allow you to customise your characters however, since you can choose to level some attributed over others, enabling you to build characters with varying attributes. It's a nice bit of customisation, which is usually pretty rare for JRPGS (where characters tend to have attributes fixed to their class).I have noticed a few performance issues with the game; with the game occassionally freezing and taking some seconds to initate the random encounters. I have also noticed some lag in battles along with some unstable framerates when you have a upwards of 4 enemies on the battle field. But these are only minor complaints, overall it plays very fluidly and well. The game looks very nice on the Vita as well, with good textures and colours.Another minor issue is with the subtitles. The voices in this game have not been dubbed, so instead the story is subbed with the orginal japanese audio. This is not a problem in itself, but I have noticed that in most cases the audio and the text don't seem to match up very well. I can only assume this was for age-rating issues, but it is a little jarring when the audio and text don't match. I imagine this not be a major issue for most people however.Like I said before, I can't say how this stacks up in the series but, a few performance issues aside, it's been a pretty fun game. If you are an RPG fan, theres lots to enjoy here. I may check out more of the Tales games after this.

Tolkien once said that all art is grown from the leaf mould of the mind, that is to say that every story out there owes a debt to its predecessors, how great that debt is depends on many factors. Not least of which just how blatantly one narrative is prepared to rip off another. While there is a debate to be had as where influence and or homage ends and simple theft begins, in Tales of heart R the debate runs more along the lines of: Just how much of One Piece can we cram into this sucker.Oh I don't mean that it's storyline or setting is anything like the world of Luffy and his Pirate crew, but the characters, the art style and many of the relationships are dead cert, unapologetic, steals from Oda's work. And, you know what? That's fine. No seriously, it's fine. they worked for Oda and they work here. it many be unoriginal but damn if it's not entertaining. Another writer, (T. S. Eliot) said tha young writers borrow, mature writers steal. As I said above as regards R it's a matter of simple theft. In the mean time the game runs, sounds, and feels like a lot of its own predecessors and is mostly good for it. In fact about the only complaint I have in terms of it's theft of its own older siblings is that they took the upgrade system from Tales of Xillia. That wasn't a particularly good system and it's not all that great here. Granted they've added a slightly wrinkle which tries to keep the player upgrading his/her path in a well rounded manner, but, unfortunately, that tend to simply make for ever more clone like avatars, with little to no individuality in their combat setups. As i said earlier the art style is copied to a large degree from One Piece with some of that shows elongated faces, particularly on the 'sexy women', over all though the look of this game and the cleanness and smoothness of the animation needs be praised, it might not stretch the Vita to any startling degree but, hell it does look nice. The sound is also somewhere in rip off territory with the opening theme being a simplified version of another classic. But simplified or not, rip off or not, it is a classic for a reason and that's because it's sounds damn good, it did then, it does now, and if I could only remember its name I be a lot happier.Outside this little game of spot the influence, Tales of Heart R runs a competent and enjoyable gaming experience. It's not a title which will blow your socks off, or in anyway convert those who aren't already fans of the JRPG genre, but for those who are, this will scratch your itch for another few weeks or months. So go at it, you'll have a fun time.

I'm not going to say the Tales series is necessarily predictable, but when you put one of these games in you know pretty much what you're getting. The characters will be variations on classic Anime tropes as you navigate your teenage protagonist through a series of battles based on a combination of button mashing and tactics. In terms of design and style they all follow a pretty tight formula. The main variations come from the plots, which (while they always share features like multiple worlds and a powerful church) are all unique and clever with a lot of enjoyable world-building.Since the elements that make up a Tales game are so standard there are really only two major questions that needto be answered about this game: how good is the story and how well does the game adapt itself to the portable system? As to the latter the answer is pretty well. The graphics on the Vita are very good and the game doesn't look substantially worse than Tales of Xilia on the PS3. The fact that this was ported from a DS game makes it even more impressive since there is little evidence of the compromises that must have been made for that system apart from slightly smaller level designs than normal. As to the story, without giving too much away it's a decent one. You play a teenage boy (of course) called Kor Meteor who has accidentally scattered the emotions of a girl (the eponymous Kohaku Hearts) while trying to save her from an evil witch. Kor is fun in his innocent easily pushed around way, while Kohaku gets to slowly recover her personality. To help repair your mistake you travel with her and her comically overprotective brother as you hunt for the pieces of her soul. As you might expect complications ensue. The characters are entertaining and the plot diverting. Like all Tales games there are short character skits that appear occasionally where you get to see the characters interact with each other outside of the normal exposition moments. These are often funny or character building so they help flesh out the story a lot.One unusual thing is (like the recently released

I've never played the original but after playing just 2 hours im very happy with this game. The animated cut scenes are great, the gameplay is easy to get the hang of and its pretty damn funny as well. The story starts off pretty abruptly after the opening cutscene but that just means you can get to playing the game faster than a lot of other JRPG's that might have up to an hour of messing around before you can really start or even save. Only complaints so far are that some of the audio doesn't sync or have subs to go with it and the subs are too take for a game that's rated 16. eg instead of pervert they used rapscallion.Theres a few typos as well but nothing as game breaking as SAO:HF I think the DLC could have been a bit better as i dont care for costumes at all. Some kind of weapon and items pack would have been a lot better.Recommended for any RPG/JRPG fan and with 50-100 hours of gameplay its well worth the price. I just hope it sells well and the Vita starts to get a lot more physical games.I got the pre order edition so for anyone else that did theres a mistake in the instructions on how to enter the draw. The instructions say go to dlc.tohr.com but this website doesnt exist. The correct link is dlc-tohr.comI originally wrote that i was dissapointed that it didn't use any of the vita's touch capabilities but a few hours in they introduce a touch mechanic in battles.

I love Tales games and was really excited that this was finally getting released outside of Japan. The gameplay is similar to Tales of Symphonia and Vesperia with a new twist on levelling up your characters and creating new wepons for them using Somas. If you're a fan of the series then you will get many hours of great portable gaming fun out of this, the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because it has no english dub only the original Japanese voices. This has made it harder to get engrossed in the story and characters as with the english dub you start looking forward to the skits and can enjoy them without having to read along, also some of the translations are a bit odd so if you are reading everything you'll get a few giggles when they say weird stuff.

I downloaded thIs off PSN.Ive played just under 12 hours of this game and its really good. The characters are great and its so refreshing to have a little girl character (Beryl) who doesn't have an annoying squeaky voice. The main character (Kor) is also great too as he is really dumb in an adorable way and fodder for his team mate, Hisui who bullies him mercilessly. The combat is excellent and I found my self grinding just so i could perfect my combat form rather than for level and gald. If your a fan of the story and characters of Tales as well as its combat you will love this!
