Stranger of Sword City is a dungeon-crawler RPG that is very much in the vein of the classic Wizardry games. For the uninitiated, this means assembling a party of characters (either pre-made or customised by you) and exploring labyrinthine dungeons in a 1st-person view, taking on a myriad of dangerous foes in turn-based combat. As you progress deeper into the dungeons, you'll discover tougher enemies and greater rewards. In between visits to the dungeons, you'll have the chance to manage/recover your party and buy/sell items and equipment back at your base. The combat itself is very challenging, requiring both careful planning in battles and a properly balanced party, and tracking down the special marks is great fun.The story sets the scene quite nicely and keeps the game running along, but is never so heavy as to interrupt the flow of the game, with dialogue scenes furthering the story as you progress through the game, occuring both in the field and back at your headquarters. As for the visuals, SoSC features nicely realised visuals, with 3D dungeons (each with its own look and feel) and pre-rendered character and enemy sprites. The character art itself is worthy of mention, as the game gives you the choice between two styles - one is a more detailed, "mature" look, and the other is the standard anime look that you might prefer in Japanese games. You have the choice of switching these at any time through the options, so you can decide which you prefer at your leisure. The cover art on the game case can even be reversed to reflect your favourite art style, which is a really nice touch.Audio-wise, the game features a nicely written soundtrack that mostly sits in the background, but it isn't afraid to grab your attention with its rousing battle themes. Voiceovers are used sparingly, and are only available in Japanese (which I personally feel is more authentic). Sound effects are there when needed, and consist largely of your typical combat sounds, creaking doors, etc.As far as gameplay is concerned, aside from the classic dungeon-crawler gameplay, there are a few extra features. One is the ambush system, which allows you to hide in wait at dedicated points in the dungeons in order to attack special "transporter" enemies. These enemies are tougher than regular ones, and increase in power with each consecutive ambush you make during a single dungeon visit, but they carry rare equipment that you'll definitely benefit from. The other thing to mention is that the game can be quite unforgiving (which may be a good or bad thing depending on how you like your challenges). All party members have a fixed number of so-called "life points" that decrease each time that character falls in combat. In order to recover fallen allies, you'll need to rest them back at the base, meaning they won't be available to you again until they've finished healing (time passes while you're in the dungeons). Similarly, the aforementioned life points can be recovered, though they take several days, and if a character loses all of them, he or she will disappear for good (think permadeath), so you need to be careful. However, you can always create new party members at the base, but you'll lose your progress with an individual character if they die for good. I would suggest saving quite frequently and to alternate between a few different save files to avoid any painful losses. Many stronger enemies have the potential to kill a party member in just one or two strikes. All in all, SoSC is a really well polished dungeon crawler with very challenging combat and a unique story and setting that will keep you wanting to see what's around the next corner. Although it's a bit of a contradiction in this case, it's fair to say that they really don't make them like this anymore!

The game is one of the best Dungeon Crawlers in recent years. The setting of the game is quite grim, the normal people in it, die easily enough and a lot end up resorting to robbery, murder and narcotics.True to classical Dungeon Crawlers, there's perma-death in this game, however not in the traditional sense. Characters have Life Points, depending on their age (fully customisable by the player), when they get K.O.'d in battle, they lose one of those points, they can be recovered however it'll cost money and the character will be out of commission for several days. All in all, it's a great game with a good storyline and branching endings.

This is a dungeon crawler RPG for the Vita where you can customise your allies. You can now rank yourself against the world. This game is a fun challenge for those who like dungeon crawler games. You can have a party up to 5 as far as I know.
