Upgrading from a 2 Bay DS216j to this unit gave me a couple of generations of enhancements and space for two more drives. The Upgrade process given on the Synology website worked as planned, however the device spent a huge amount of time expanding the storage pool, surface scanning and then committing the RAID re-silver. There are tweaks to prompt the Synology to hurry the job up a bit, but even with these applied it was very much a case of leave it for a day or two and check it when I got the email to say things were done.4 Bay Raid options are more flexible, I run my DS418j with minimal services and maximum security hardening and no WAN side access. It's used for backing up business data and handling resource files for a design agency and consultancy. This unit handles the work without any issues and is responsive over our Gigabit LAN.I wouldn't recommend this unit for Plex and 4k streaming duties, if you want to do that sort of load you'd be far better looking at a none j model or a Play model as these Synology systems have better CPU, Memory and Dual LAN ports to ease traffic across the Network. For SME duties though it's hard to beat the value and reliability of the j series. Our unit is running WD Gold 6Tb, WD Red 3Tb x2 and Red Pro 6Tb drive and at some point in the future I'll probably cycle out the older 3Tb and add in 6Tb's or whatever disk is at the best value point at that juncture.Accoustically this unit is well insulated although I do stand mine on jumbo sized sound deadening feet and make sure everything is tight inside. I've noticed the unit is slightly quieter than the DS216j despite running more drives. I expect this is due to better air circulation internally and a slightly better build quality on the case. It's really not suited to Hot Swapping disks, there's too much fiddling for this sort of usage and too many screws. Again I didn't buy it to be tinkered with regularly, I like the Synology's because you can just configure them, automate and lock them away in the server rack.Working in conjunction with a UPS helps to make the device safe from yet another set of risks, and if you are super wary of Crypto-lockers (remember Syno locker anyone?) then you can always ghost out time based backups to a whole range of destinations...cloud, another Synology, a USB external drive, LTO or RDX.Encryption is easy enough to comply with GDPR.Overall I think a Synology is well worth the investment if you want reliability with minimum on-going tinkering or the kind of eye watering tedium associated with FreeNAS. Life is way too short to be reading and keeping up to date with something like FreeNAS unless you live for that kind of thing in which case why would you be reading this review anyways?

I've been thinking of a NAS solution for a number of years now and finally took the step when I upgraded from a Mac Pro to an iMac where the storage was unexpandable. I was recommended by an IT guy I work with to look at the Synology enclosures. After almost buying the two bay NAS, I bought this instead with a couple of WD 6Tb Red disks to compliment existing 3Tb and 2Tb WD Greens.I am absolutely blown away. Installation is incredibly easy - plug it into the iMac or PC via Ethernet, run the installation and you're away within minutes - though I did have a problem with a faulty drive that couldn't be recognised. However, don't expect to be up and running as quick.Creating a usable Storage Pool can take up to 12 hours as each drive is checked for errors before they can be used. However, once you have set up your preferred configuration (various RAID options are available) it is as easy to use as a conventional external hard disk. The Synology administration software is browser based and incredibly flexible. Its wealth of features alone is worth the very reasonable cost of the enclosure, and downloadable 'apps' allow you to set the box up for virtually any function whether it be a web server or your own personal Cloud. The software does seem daunting at first but you quickly find your way around its vast amount of functions.Put simply, I have a huge collection of data (video, music, RAW photo files, movies, etc.) and wouldn't dream of going back to DVD or Blu Ray as an archiving method anymore, or even external drives. NAS is the only way to go and this enclosure is the best place to start for a home user or even small business!Highly recommended!

I bought this to replace an old DS413J which has been running 24/7 for almost 5 years. The DS418J with it's better specs is noticeably faster, read/write speeds are good and there is very little fan noise.Synology's software makes setting up and controlling a breeze. Using Quickconnect I can easily connect remotely to the NAS and stream content off it.I recommend it to anybody who wants to stream and store files. If you just want somewhere to back your files up locally and nothing else then personally I would look for a large capacity external drive.

Product works as expected, has been working well for 3 weeks. I'm impressed with the quality of the Synology software, its security updates. Although the software is really ugly, I can make it work easily enough. I bought drives separately because cheaper (WD-RED).I'm mostly using it as a Time Machine destination for my two Mac computers (laptop & desktop). Over time I expect to start using other features.Commendable product after 3 weeks of ownership.

I use this with 4x 6TB drives, gives a lot of storage space. While the unit itself is very quiet the Toshiba drives are quite noisy. Mine is in a different room. The Synology DiskStation Manager software (DSM) is easy enough to use. I connect to it from both PC and Mac with no problems.Put it this way, this is the third DS41x unit I've purchased for my ever increasing storage needs. All three are rock solid.

Works just as I wanted it to do and there are always update for the firmware. The only problem is not with the NAS but with the drives which are put into it.

Excellent well made quiet and more than fit for purpose, would definitely recommend this item to anyone considering an NAS station.

Great product overall, so far very happy with it. Can not imagine going back to not having such a NAS.
