This NAS drive is a great addition to your network. It has dual drive support as well as USB 3 external support. The drive enclosure came with two 2TB WD Red drives, configured as RAID 1. This means that your data is automatically stored on both drives simultaneously providing redundancy against failure. You can of course change this configuration to use the NAS as a 4TB storage option. The setup was reasonably straightforward, going to a website to perform an initial setup. You need to register an account to use the drive on-line from any device. What wasn't obvious was that you need to go to the device login page to view the device information and log in with the account information that you gave on the website. The device interface is well designed, which is in contrast to the PC software WD Sync that I couldn't get working on Windows 10. I have spent around 2 hours on this and it still can't get past an issue where the software cannot find the device, even though Windows 10 can interact with it with no problems. I have mapped a network drive and this works well also. The drive is fast enough to stream 1080p video without any problems locally, although it is difficult to give you representative timings due to variable wireless network speeds. I was getting around 113 MBps download speeds which seems good. Also remember if you are streaming off the internet you will be limited to your broadband upload speed which can be very low. The drives themselves are quiet with only a faint whir in the background. The speed of the drives themselves is not disclosed, the spec sheet indicates 6GB/s using 'IntelliPower' and a 64MB cache. The WD 4TB Cloud drive is a direct replacement for many of the cloud based file sharing services, such as dropbox, google drive etc. It saves you having to subscribe to a paid service and gives you extra security against companies looking at your data. The drive also provides a few useful services, include ftp server, various media servers (itunes, DLNA) and for apple fans, direct support for Time Machine.Overall, it's great having your own cloud storage solution. The redundancy feature saves a lot of worry, but I'm docking a star because of the issue with the software and also, there a few features missing - for example, no support for printing, or adding any other network device.EDIT: I have finally got the Sync software working by uninstalling the software (again) and re-installing. It's found the drive and I'm pleased to say that it is working perfectly. I can now have local folders on my PC which are synced with the NAS drive.

The first thing is that this WD My Cloud device is quite small in size as in compact and easily fits on the desktop without taking up too much space plus you notice once up and running it is also very quiet in operation and does not hum or throb away like another of my old devices did – this is the problem, in some respects these days in that you get accustomed to your ‘old gear’ and its working sounds etc. and then something like this comes along and shows the big, modern difference in the progress that has been made. I will say I did have slight ‘teething problems’ getting it to function on Windows 10 but this could have been me messing about but a friend who popped in to see this marvel helped as between us we got it as good I want it for my needs,as outlined further on. Once up and running it’s very good at such things as streaming video as in 1080 definition quality very well indeed and the sheer quality and speed is far better than my old ‘stone bonker’ device I used to have but on anything big it had to cope with, threw a wobbly part way through doing its process – won’t name the make but we have all been there I would think!. The drive comes with two 2TB WD drives so that your data is automatically stored on both drives simultaneously providing a safe guard against possible failure but its possible to change this and configuration it to use the NAS as a 4TB storage option which brings this in the ‘Jack of All Trades’ area. In use is where it scores highly as the drive is quick and I do mean quick and as pointed out above, I can stream HD video with ease but I use this device mainly for storage of photos and said video. Plus as we have now got this drive in Windows 10 sorted (!) and so can use it as a standard storage device which is useful. Daughter had a look and a ‘play around’ with it and she said it’s just great for uploading photos from her phone and annoyingly she figured that out while I was still thinking about it! – makes you feel old? – I’ll say... Overall, despite the initial messing about to get it to go on Windows 10, which was perhaps me and was my fault, I will say it works very well for my needs and the WD brand seems to be making real headway in this storage market, so based on the old device I struggled with until this arrived, this is the one to have based on my own experiences so far and the sheer joy of seeing all those photos loaded with such ease is real progress in my book. This is a decent bit of kit which provides network storage for the home or small office. The marketing team couldn't resist sticking Cloud in the name. It isn't cloud storage, but it is remotely accessible, which is a very different thing.Anyway, in terms of the essentials it has two 2TB drives, which mirror each other on a RAID 1 setting (which is the default). You can change this to RAID 0 and get 4TB of storage, but that is somewhat riskier. There are other versions of this device with 8TB and 12TB (i.e. 4TB 6TB mirrored) or a driveless version where you can slot in your own SATA drives.Stick it on the network, turn it on and you are up and running - the device can be found in Windows Explorer or OS X Finder.Speed very much depends on how good your wireless network is, but I certainly had no trouble streaming videos on my BT Hub.You can manage the storage for users, user groups, individual folders and even, for example, set a storage limit for a specific user. From that initial set-up there are a couple of extras:1. Back-up / sync software for your PCs; WD user software has always been a bit hit and miss (I first bought a WD Passport 64Gb back up disk years) ago and it is still an area of weakness. It works and is passable, but by no means special2. Remote access to your files via smartphones or a browser; you can control who can access, via which devices and what they can see. This is effectively your replacement for Dropbox, but (a) if you are used to Dropbox you are going to find it a bit clunky, and (b) your files are not in the cloud, replicated across multiple servers, they are in your home - when your home internet goes down, nothing will be available. Those limitations aside, this is a good step into managed storage for the data-heavy family or small business. More private than Dropbox and Google Drive, and of course with no annual fees, and simple to set up initially. Proper geeks will probably find plenty of reasons to dismiss this kit, but for the reasonably savvy consumer it is well worth consideration.

The setup of this unit is an absolute breeze even with the firmware update it took about 10 minutes and is definitely designed with the novice in mind. This unit is slow to add data to but is super quick to access and stream data and media and that's the most important detail, Who wants data stream's that suffer with lags.OK so it took a full day to load my 1.6 Tb of music to the drive (I was not impressed by that) .So when all was in place I started my Marantz music Streamer/Amp and connected with ease and started playing my tunes... Perfect no lag... no loss of quality it was and is doing the job it was brought for with ease.So although I have a dedicated NAS just for films and TV series Ichucked a few movies on to it on a share with remote access and asked a few friends and family to log in and view them with as many devices as possible and let me know how things went.Only one person could not connect but only because they were on a university network,Connections were made from behind VPN's using smart TV's mobile phones/tablets and laptops and base PC's.All reported that they had enjoyed perfect playback with no lag or sound drop and of the highest picture resolutionSmart TV's will when on a slow network auto adjust the playback quality to avoid lags all had 4K straight down the pipe and on screen.I am aware that because I have the highest speed fibre that I have an advantage over standard broadband connections but I think this would have a only have a negligible effect on overall performance when accessing via remote access. So my view is that although its a pain putting large blocks of data on to it at the start once setup is complete it is a superb piece of kit and well worth the money.Be aware that after the initial set up e-mails for confirmation (required) WD will start to send you marketing e-mails (never saw a box to opt out) but just open the mail and click unsubscribe at the bottom and they stop.

I bought this as a replacment for a Synology DS119j, which was a really poor piece of kit that was too low powered to do basic NAS work. I set up the WD My Cloud Ex2 Ultra yesterday, and had a few issues with set up, but the main problem was actually my Bitdefender Total Security that kept blocking access (so I had to enabe access thorugh that, but it took me a while to figure out that was the issue). Aside from that, it is largely plug and play and then you just need to set up the acconts, which is pretty straightforward if you have a passing familiarity with computers. I have now set up accounts and shares for all my family and they now have access through both mycloud.com and on their phones.I wanted a NAS that would act as a fairly straightforward cloud device and that is was this does. It goes further than that as well. I've already streamed a film through it within the house. I tried using Plex, but you have to pay for the streaming service, so I just used the VLC app on my phone and that worked fine. I also streamed a film on my laptop directly through windows and that also worked fine. Compared to Synology and Qnap, there are far fewer apps, which is a bit of a letdown, so there is no specific photo app for example. What is available is a My Cloud app that deals with all files in pretty much the same way. You can sync photos from your phone with this, but it is not as sophisticated as say Photo Station or Moments on the Synology system. That said, if you don't want to spend hours meesing about with complex networking software which requires some in-depth understanding of networks, but need a straightforward NAS that is easy to use and do what it claims to do, then this seems ot be an excellent choice.

I got this NAS up and running in 5 minutes. It took less than10 minutes to register it and create a MyCloud account. This process was very easy and straight forward, with the hardest parts being having to give your NAS a name ( I chose "NAS"..) and think of a password. The WD Sync app is very simple. I just accepted the default settings (My Docs, My pics, My videos and MyMusic). It then took about 2 hours to copy 160 GB from my PC to the NAS via gigabit ethernet (everything in my house is ethernet except my tablet and phone). I then tried the WD Sync app with a few trial files and it is simple. Create a document in My Docs on your PC and it immediately appears on the NAS.I purchased this NASmainly for storing my photos which are rapidly filling up my 500 GB SSD on my PC - every time I press the shutter button on my camera, there goes anything from 20+ MB to 50+ MB depending on how I have set my camera. It was very easy to map a network drive to the Photos folder on the NAS, so I cn now use my NAS as a fancy external HD. I now store my photos on the NAS thus by-passing my PC completely. If this NAS had better instructions in the packaging and on the WD website, it would get five stars. I found out how poor the documentation is when I tried to set up the NAS as a DLNA media server. After a bit of searching on the WD website, I gave up and tried to muddle through on my own.I got the NAS set up as a DLNA server, but my TV still would not recognise it on the network. After a bit of searching on Google and YouTube, I realised that I had to set up a Windows Homegroup first. Once I did that, my TV recognised the NAS and I can now use my TV to view photos, play music and vatch videos that are stored on the NAS.

I bought this dual drive Nas to replace my ageing single drive Mycloud device. With the exception of the occasional issue trying to access the device from my Windows 10PC File Explorer, I have found the Mycloud devices to be very reliable for DNLA streaming of video and music as well as 24/7 CCTV security. But I found backup to a USB problematic so I bought this dual version for additional data safety, having as it does, a Raid 1 option.Having previous experience setting up a Mycloud device, this one was easy to set up for me although it isn't always easy if the installer doesn't have much experience with these WD items. It's knowing what to set up within the device software options and how to do so that is half the battle.Once it is set up it though which took me around 4 hours including moving over 100GBytes of data from the old drive to this one, it works a treat and the Android App means my phones images are automatically uploaded to my Nas as a backup which is a nice useful feature. This EX2 ultra version has a more powerful processor compared to the older versions which include the single drive Mycloud and mirror devices and more memory too which helps speed up response and makes interacting with the device much better. With less memory and the slower processor things could grind to a halt at times with older models.I tend to opt for static IP (ARP) with fixed devices like this and it was very easy to set this one up uising the same address as my previous device. This saved me having to reconfigure my security camera nas storage settings. If you are looking for a reliable relatively easy to use Nas drive for media streaming and one or two 1080P security cameras perhaps, this is ideal.

My ageing Synology DS12 seemed to constantly tell me disks were bad, so I took the plunge and abandoned it. Not too flush with cash, this was a well reviewed and fairly priced alternative. My NAS needs are quite simple, don't get divorced if the laptop dies and all the photo's and home movies go with it! OK, and being able to server them up to the TV for some family nostalgia, along with RAID 1 just in case. This deals with those things very smoothly. A solid leap in performance from my old 7 year old device. The user experience is well laid out but no an on board operating system like other manufacturers. It's more like what you get from a Wifi Router. Still, lots of easy to configure options with a reasonable amount of depth.Ultimately, it was VERY easy to get up and running to setup shares, be able to stream to TV's, and also manage the device and content remotely over the web. I quite love that I can set my Iphone (8) up with the WD software to automatically push photo's and videos to a share, then manage the content directly on the NAS, rather than going via PC. The EX2 Ultra will also Email me alerts on issues or log changes.Power management is interesting. You can set a schedule for up and downtime, but there is no power button, so if you want to access it when you've scheduled it to be off, you need to pull the power cable and reinsert. I might be missing a deep sleep wake on lan option, but don't think so. Ultimately I guess this keeps the price down, and with disk sleep it probably is OK to leave on all the time. Just doesn't quite fit with a green message.Disk loading (compared to my old device) is also nice and simple. Spring loaded lid, unscrew the clamp, push disk in. Super.

This product is a home Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. This means you can add it to your home network via ethernet, and it can become a fileserver for all your connected devices in the home (via your internal network) or even away from home (via your public IP address). The 4TB is 2 x 2TB disks which are, by default, mirrored - which means you get 2TB of actual storage. Every time you write or change data on one disk - it is copied to the other disk. This gives you an excellent chance of retaining data should a disk fail. Other configurations (which allow full access to 4TB) are available. The unit is small and pretty quiet, but not silent. It has a USB v3 port so I was able to transfer data to & from a connected hard drive very quickly. So what do I use it for? It holds all my photos. This means I can access the photos on any of our family tablets, phones, laptops, desktops, even the PS3 & the TV. It holds my library of flac & mp3 files - which I use as my library source for our Sonos music system. I use it for work files that I need access to at home & whilst out & about. It could hold your video collection, it could be backup server for your connected devices. There are many uses for a NAS, and we couldn't live without one now.My one gripe with it - it is very poorly documented. Its all online and not intuitive. Also the setup process was really quite fiddly - accounts taking ages to get registered. WD could definitely improve the User Experience there.

Easy to set up and looks good. Initially found it a bit slow, but then realised that the switch on my wired (Ethernet) network was 10/100 base. Changed the switch to a gigabit version and it flies. I transferred a 50GB file in about 30 mins. Gets a bit warmer than I would like.... 40+ degree in my office and had to take it out of the cupboard it was in as it was getting nearer to 50c with its fans revving over 6000! Now sitting and looking good on a bookshelf. You get this data from the health check tool on the software dashboard. Noise level is very acceptable though it does rise as fans and disks spin up under heavy use. It does run warm even in idle so not environmentally ideal,I think spec says it's about 12watts - check. Anyway I believe all these products are similar and this may be slightly better than competitors.I am using this as a time machine back up and it works absolutely perfectly. Also using it as a dlna sever. WDs built in server works well. The only problem I have had with it is when using the PLEX software. PLEX asks to download an upgrade but it keeps failing to install. (I ended up just not using PLEX as I realised it doesn't do what I wanted it for anyway). Other than that I found the operating system very user friendly..

I'm struggling at the moment to get the best use out of this. I accept it is probably my lack of IT skills which is the problem rather than the equipment. So far I have got it working effectively just as an external hard drive and it is doing very well as that. I see a number of other reviews go into technical stuff which is beyond me. So I thought it might be useful pointing out a few things which may be helpful to others, like me, who are less well informed. First it was a bit of a shock to open the box and find no instructions whatsoever. Googling 'my cloud EX2 Ultra' got me straight to the manufacturers site but I struggled then to find anything among the wealth of technical info to help.I finally found a very good manual under the 'support' heading which got me started. Also I had not appreciated with all the mentions of access and sharing from anywhere that the device would need siting alongside my router. Although the device is not very large, there was nowhere to put it without re-siting the router so, if this is the same for you, it is something to think about. I am sure it will get more and more useful for me as time goes on and I was probably naïve about how easy it would be to use and I have got off to a slow start.

Really simple to set up and use. On a basic level you can pretty much plug it in, make an account then you just have to either drag and drop files across or set it to sync with the desired folders (which will keep it constantly up to date). There's other settings on the admin dashboard that you can play about with if you want tweak the device to your preferences. While the device only comes with a really basic instruction card, a full manual is available online should you need it.It works great with Xbox One by simply enabling the correct setting in the admin section . You are then able to access it via the Xbox media player to stream videos, view photographs etc.I assume you can also do this with Playstation 4 but I don't have one so can't advise for definite. My only slight complaint if I had to find one is that it is a little noiser than my PC and laptop but even then I only notice it if I'm working at my desk with no other sound. If you're playing music (even quietly) or a video then you can't hear it at all. I'd imagine in a week or so I won't even notice it.

Works great - however it should be pointed out that the storage space here (16TB) listed assumes that you're working your NAS as a standard single storage unit... But, as soon as you run it in RAID mode, you get half of those 16 as available storage space (8TB) because the RAID structure stripes the data across both drives for redundancy to reduce the risk of data loss. For the uninitiated it will seem great with 16TB advertised but when you have large volumes of data you don't want to lose it in case of a drive failure. So, unless this IS going to be your backup drive, at which point you can use the full 16TB for storage as a single storage unit, I recommend using RAID. So,if this is your main storage unit and you don't have anything else for back-up, then you should to set it to to RAID mode when you install it and thereby reducing the risk of data loss if one drive fails. If a failure happens, you will not be happy with yourself after you lost TB of data.... Just saying

Bought as Warehouse Deal - amazing bang for the buck! The unit contains 2x WD NAS Red-Series, when starting you can decide in which configuration you want to set it up - RAID 0/1, JBOD, Spanning. The first steps are easy to make - define some users, define shares, and you are set; a public share (music, videos, photos) is predefined for those who want it even quicker. DNLA/iTunes or Backup for macOS (TimeMachine) is also just 1-2 clicks away.On the top, it has a bunch of professional features (Active Directory Aggregation, LLTD, iSCSI, several Backup options,...) - but in my opinion WD did a great job to keep it quite easy to handle.Several plugs-ins are available, like Dropbox, QuickFynd,Anti-Virus, P2P, just to name a few. The choice might not be as mighty as with Synology, but until now I did not miss anything. So you can really tweak your unit, so that it fits every need and function, but isn't slowed down because of unnecessary burden.

The drives come pre-RAID'd so when you first access you might think you have the wrong device until you go into the settings to see that RAID is on. The drive itself is quick to load and mostly works okay. As a photographer, I back up photos into folders based on events and dates. When I tried to run a backup of my old drives onto this drive via USB to the back of the NAS, the WD back up tool would often fail. It will process 1 folder then stop and say the second folder is not found. It wasn't reliable at all. However, once you map the drive onto your network you are also able to map the USB drive as well and transfer it through Windows Explorer which works extremely well (provided you are connecting via a LAN cable and not over wifi or that takes forever)All in all,it does what it's supposed to do. It's completely let down by the built in management software for backups.
