Let's be clear I think this product is brilliant in what it does, I have only given 4 stars because for me it doesn't appear to do everything, although I have tried to recognise some failings that are due to Apple rather than this device.GeneralPros ;Easy to set up. Had up and running within 5 mins.Internet bridge ( allows you to connect to device and internet at same time). Not only does this work well I can extend the wifi into parts of house it is a bit dodgy in normally, ( although wifi extension is NOT a documented feature ).USB connection. Brilliant for connecting a USB stick ( a Sandisk micro drive fits perfectly) or even a portable hard drive. Tried both and works seamlessly.Copying files.Easy to copy between ipad etc and sd card or USB, or between sd card and usb.Emergency battery. Not used in anger, but appears to be simple to use.Ease of use. For what it does, it is easy to use.Cons;Size. It is a lot bigger than the Sandisk equivalent. Aout 3/4 size of mobile hard drive, but thinner. Not particularly a problem for me.Limited file formats. The app only recognises certain file formats, so whilst you can copy and store you may not be able to open.Other points to note : if you put a USB drive in and keep it in, device does not fully power off. Whilst the USB cable appears generic, my device will only power up when using that cable ?My specific use requirements.I want to use this device primarily to help me with my photography and to allow me to do more editing on my Ipad and to show photos on this and my android phone. My ipad only has 16 GB of memory and I was hoping this device would save me £500 + if I wanted to update to a bigger ipad. I was also hoping it would allow me to get around the Apple traps for importing photos through sd readers ( which I have). The bottom line is that the verbatim drive is a great product and has achieved most of what I was looking for, but frustratingly not all. I am aware that my limited technical knowledge may mean that there are solutions to some of these, but I haven't found them yet !Niggles ;Cannot import RAW files. I tend to shoot in RAW and the device does not recognise either Nikon nor Canon RAW files. Given Apples dictatorial approach I haven't found a way of copying them somewhere on my Ipad and then getting them onto the camera roll so that I can edit them.No direct import to camera roll on Apple. This is probably an extension of the last niggle. On the device you set up folders and copy files to those. You cannot copy direct to the camera roll. You have to go into folder with the files, view them and then use the save in Photos option. It works but come on. A quick look on my Android phone and this is not an issue, you save the jpg and then you can immediately view /edit.The " open in" function is very limited so you have to save and then open up the photo editing app.OverallOverall this is a brilliant device at a great price, the app could be improved to make it better but thanks to Apple I suspect will always be easier to use on an Android device. Not sure it has saved me the whole of the £500+, but I will either persevere with ipad in which case it has, or switch to an Android tablet solely for my photography which will still mean a massive saving.

As has been stated by many reviewers, this is a very useful, fairly unique, product. It is slightly smaller than an external 2.5" HDD drive. It worked out of the box for basic functions. As has been previously stated, the apps look very old, but are in the same style as software found on routers and other devices - so not really the "fault" of verbatim, but the requirements of the hardware. People are used to pretty GUI style views and the device and app software is a rather primitive GUI looking back to the early Windows 2 and GEM interfaces of the 80's. That takes be back . . .Next issue was, like others, the inability of some drives to be recognised. It was mentioned briefly in one review,so I was able to work it out very quickly - external USB and HDD's have to be formatted to FAT32 or exFAT, the unit does NOT recognised anything formatted to MAC formats. Disappointing, as most of my HDD's are formatted to OS format. I am having to move 1.1 Gb of movies and files to other HDD's in order to reformat my main 2Tb portable HDD to exFAT so I can stream movies and photos . . a bit of a pain, but it will keep me occupied for a few hours and give me a chance to get rid of a lot of duplicates and other dross.I did not charge the unit out of the box - I was impatient! :) The unit worked for about an hour before the red light for low battery warning turned on. I unplugged my WD HDD and substituted my SDD external HDD. The battery light immediately turned green as the SDD takes little power - so, if you need a long time running on battery, then an external SDD drive will maximise the time you have cordless. Expensive solution, but I had a spare SDD after an upgrade and bought an Zheino external HDD box from Amazon. That's a separate story - but suffice to say, it's great, USB 3 and takes any 2.5" spare HDD you may have. Screwless install, flips open like a pack of cigarettes ( remember those? :) ) and the drive simply slots in. Buy one.I had the usual few issues streaming a movie for the first time. I have iPad's in the house, a small iPad and the new iPad Pro. Both connected and played the movie without issue. The iPad mini found the movie straight away and played with VLC with no issues. The iPad Pro wasn't as painless, but it did find and play with VLC after I sorted out what seems to be a conflict with another media player I had. I had loaded NPlayer which seemed to have caused some confusion with PlayerXtreme but once Nplayer was deleted, all was fine and PlayerXtreme or VLC work flawlessly from within the MediaServer app. I am still having issues getting VLC to recognise the fileserver from within VLC itself. More work needs to be done. Settings in PlayerXtreme work fine.Overall, for media sharing, success. I have yet to try saving photos from my camera to it, but that will be for another rainy afternoon this week.

I have had this device for a week now. It allows me to access both my portable USB hard drive and all my SD cards from my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 3) and my pad (Nexus 7). This was pretty easy to set up using the free Android app.The Battery life is OK and gives me about 3 to 4 hours even with everything turned on and a hard drive connected. I have also managed to set it up so that I can access it using ES File Explorer (very nice). The built-in Wi-Fi bridge allows you to be on-line whilst accessing external storage, this is handy if you want to play music from an external drive while you are browsing the internet, checking email etc. It is fairly easy to set up IF you are only using it to access open Wi-Fi networks (eg.In pubs and coffee shops). However .... the interface is a bit clunky and it's tricky to connect to a well secured wireless network.1. It won't allow you to connect to a hidden network (only networks where the SSID is broadcast), so you may have to compromise security to use the bridge at home.2. It does not keep a list of networks you have used in the past and has to search every time.3. It does not remember your settings, so when I turn on the wireless bridge I have to set the region to England (and not the USA) every time.4. It does not actually connect until after you have exited settings, leaving you with the impression that the connection failed. Also, on my unit, the MAC address printed on the back of the device was incorrect. This proved to be very inconvenient because I use MAC filtering, thus I need to add a device's MAC address to an 'allowed' list before it can connect to my Wi-Fi. I figured this out eventually (after multiple connection failures) and then had to turn off all my wireless security and allow it to connect so that I could look on the 'client' list to see what the correct MAC address was.On balance I think this unit is good value for money and if Verbatim can upgrade their software and firmware to overcome the problems I have outlined then I would definitely class it as outstanding. In the meantime it only gets 4 stars from me.

I spend a lot of time travelling on business using digital audio, video and photo equipment. I usually use my evenings at my hotel to review my day's work and draft reports etc.I have lost count of the hours spent moving digital media files around, using cables, card readers or portable hard drives connected to a lap top. Time and time again I misplaced cables or they failed ans left me stuck.I had been looking at the MediaShare unit for a while and, after I had another lost evening I ordered one. It arrived 3 weeks ago and I took it with me on a trip.to an assignment in Ireland which I extended for an extra week to have a break and do some photography.Well I tried it out on my IPad using theVerbatim IOS App and was blown away by how simple it was to both view and copy files from my camera SDXC cards to a 64gb USB stick. I was able to use the App to create folders on the stick and copy either all or just selective files across. The Android App is on my Galaxy S5 and works well on that too.So whilst it is still early days in getting used to this unit, I have already decided this small addition to my work kit is going to be invaluable. It allows me to review and select files quickly and by using my IPad Air, in better detail and quality. I was able to get my reports done quicker and without a bundle of cables. I also have an Apple Lightning camera connection cable which is an SD card reader for the IPad but, as good as it is, the Verbatim MeriaShare is far better for my needs and will handle all file types. It is not a super fast transmission unit but is quick enough. As said above, it's early days but so far no downsides. Will have time to push it harder and widen it's use in the next few weeks but it does what I need.I am uncertain of it's battery life but it has not run down or failed to date. As it is charged via a micro USB connection I can use a back up power brick in an emergency.I will update this review if any unexpected issues arise.Recommended kit!

I need to be able to back up critical data 'in the field' where there may be no power or mobile signal. It could be many files of typically 25 - 30 Mb at a pop. This does it !I admit I've only just got it and it seems to be taking forever for the green charging light to turn continuous (supposedly indicates full battery charge when it does) so the jury's out on battery life. The setup? Painless and almost immediate. Download the free Verbatim Mediashare App to your phone/tablet/device and follow the very simple instructions. A couple of minutes max and it was working. It's beautifully compact, almost identical in size to my WD my passport 1TB drive and well built too.I've ordered another Amazon Basics carry case as for the HDD because it will fit perfectly and they are SO good. I awaited arrival to check this.Sadly, Citylink courier was a joke. Ordered over the weekend, paid for "1st class" delivery. Amazon dispatched Monday. Notifications received as due Tuesday, then Wednesday. The tracking system just said 'in transit' and stopped dead there. By Thursday, having wasted much time waiting in, I phoned CityLink. "It's a different tracking system used by Amazon"....."check ours" .... "the package is out on the van now for delivery". On checking, CityLink's site couldn't even identify the package let alone track it. The package was delivered within an hour of me phoning on Thursday lunchtime. Verbatim 10, Amazon 10, Citylink 2 at best.Don't hesitate to buy the product, it's good all round..... provided the battery is sound.**** UPDATE *****The information sheet about the green battery status LED is rather confusing. In my experience, it will flash whilst charging regardless of charge state when switched off. The continuous, fully charged light will only show as such once the device is switched on. In other words: it's fine !!!! I've not yet ascertained battery charge life but am loving this gadget.

This device is very simple. It's a small battery-powered portable wireless NAS without the storage. You supply that separately in the form of a USB2 stick or SD card (e.g. from your camera). You can insert both at once but this slightly shortens battery life. To use it, attach your storage, charge the battery up and turn it on. Within a minute you'll see a new wireless access point. Now all you need to do is download the Verbatim MediaShare Wireless app for your Android or iOS device (Windows Phone and Blackberry not supported), fire it up and enter the wireless details printed on the sticker on the back of the device (you can change it yourself from the app settings screen).I wouldn't recommend using this device without the official app. Up to five devices can connect at once, but obviously the more that do affects battery life (not a worry if you're on mains). If you're also in range of another wireless hotspot, i.e. your home broadband, you can set this one to pass through to your home wireless. That way you gain access to the media on this device and can also web browse etc as normal. I took this away on holiday with me for viewing my holiday snaps on a tablet and passed the internet connection through to the hotel wireless.Battery life is as advertised. I had it streaming from USB to one tablet for about 6 hours and it was still going strong. I only have a few criticisms of it:1. No Windows Phone app.2. Streaming videos was near-instantaneous, but photos were laggy. I think this is because it was busy generating thumbnail views for everything in the app so it may have improved if I had the patience to let it finish.

Initially I was hugely disappointed with this, as the app refuses to connect to any Amazon device, but worked on my android phone.A quick email to Verbatim, which they replied to within minutes, explained that their app didn't support any kindle devices anymore, but there are other apps available for free from the app store that work seamlessly.I'm really impressed with this. It dropped a star for the frustration of the Verbatim app closing every time I tried to connect and the hours lost trying to get it to work. However, the unit was only partially charged and was still on, after being left overnight, when I got up this morning. I now have five devices connected, it'll charge from a car USB port, and the storage is only limited by the size and number of SD cards you have. This will be a huge asset for the kids the next long car journey we go on as their tablets are limited on space for content.I've not tried it with a USB Hard drive yet, as I'm going to probably only going to use a few different SD cards. U rated films and kids TV programmes on one card, and another with films not suited for my young kids on another. I don't want my 5 year old being scarred by watching zombie movies, or whatever...I'm using Goodplayer to access the content. If anything, it's better than the mediashare app, and it's child's play to access once it's been set up.Overall, I'm hugely impressed and this would be a 5 star product if not for the wasted time and frustration of it not working straight from the box. For under 25 quid, you can't go wrong.Should also be said that the customer support from Verbatim was excellent.

I own a Kindle Fire HD I bought in late 2013 and wanted somewhere to store all my music, about 32 gig in total. Well this little gem does the job and then some. As we bought this as a device mainly for in doors for playing music, my review will reflect this, and I am 61 years old, so please bear this in mind.I found setting up very easy, I always change the SSID and make sure I have a 30 character password. Then bridged to my main router and the job was done. When copying files on, there is a way of creating new folders, which is a bit fiddly and doesn't allows spaces, but not too bad really. It will play mp3's straight off and go through a whole album none stop, but when playing wma files,it prompts you for an AP, I chose VLC, But when playing, the original library was not visible. This wasn't a problem as I make sure I only play mp3 files. I have some photo's on it and can open them although the viewer is very limited, ie no zooming or changing orientation. Also, stored documents and they were opened with docs to go.The wi-fi range covered the whole house, but not outside, unless I took it out with me, of course. I set up tethering on my Sony Experia, but the Kindle has to be next to it as the wi-fi for the Sony is so poor. But by bridging the Verbatim to the Sony Experia, I now have excellent coverage.I haven't managed to flatten the battery yet, but I do have it attached to the usb on my main router most of the time. My wife and I love camping and the brilliant little gadget is going to make our internet access a lot easier.

I was a bit disappointed after some hours of playing around with the device, because the Verbatim MediaShare app didn't play AVI's at all on iPad, and other media players CineXPlayer, OPlayer, VLC Player, flex:player, Plex Player, AVPlayer HD were all incapable of opening SMB shares. The one that was able to open - PlayerXtreme - could not play movies with AC3 audio tracks. Fortunately I did not gave up at this point (I was cose to) and found nPlayer (4,49 €) which opens Samba shares and plays all my videos fine. It can even utilize hardware acceleration, and has Dolby Digital sound which truly makes difference. ([...]) Note, I don't have any interest in promoting them - it is just the only app that works flawlessly with this device, learned after burning some 10 Euros in vain.I could not find a way to the internet through my OpenWrt-enhanced router, and could not find any documentation on how to set it up either - though it seems to work with all the other "ordinary" routers I stumbled upon so far. The error messages in the Verbatim app are not too informative and the app is poorly designed in my opinion, missing important features. This device is good for sharing media during travels (and at home for those who don't have a NAS or a router with USB-sharing). The battery life seems to be enough, though there's no battery level indicator besides the red light when reaching the 30% level (flashing at 10%).Overall I'm happy with the purchase - does what is expected, but the MediaShare app.

This is a lovely little product which gives you lots of the advantages of a wireless file server for a very low cost. With its free iPad app it is easy to configure the device and to access and move files on a SD card or USB device (including disk drives), though I prefer using a paid app called FileBrowser to access the files. You get a manual for mobile devices, but I didn't see any docs for Mac/PCs. In fact it creates a Windows (smb) Share containing its filesystem, which means all the files on your SD card and USB stick can be easily accessed from "traditional" computers.Through the smb share I also use MediaShare with my XBMC media centre software on both Mac and Raspberry Pi.Things I found out: (1)use the app to set a password for access to the share, by default it is blank; (2) if you have the wireless bridge option set up, you can access the device from a trad computer through its own network address (10.10.10.254) or through its address on your main router (which you can find out from your router set-up page); (3) don't leave a USB device connected when the MediaShare is switched off - it will continue to use power and drain the battery.I've been using this for a week now, mainly for accessing music and photos. Possibly it may have a few limitations in terms of multiple connections or range, but for the money it's a fantastic little device that I would highly recommend.

I intially bought this device because I wanted a storage solution for my iphone. Specifically, I needed space to store all my music files, which are mostly FLAC, which takes up a lot of space. I thought this would be the ideal solution and it was!The device takes a little bit of setting up, mainly because the app for the device is complete crap and doesn't work properly. The app needs a complete overhaul and updating. It's useless. Luckily, there is nPlayer app. This app will save you. Buy the app and connect the device to your iphone or ipad with it. Here's how to do it:Launch nPlayer. Select Network. Then SMB/CIFS. Hit + to create a new server. In the Address field type smb://10.10.10.254.In the Title field you can call it whatever you like, I put Verbatim MediaShare. In the User field type admin. Leave password and workgroup blank. Hit the tick. You will not have to repeat this step next time.It takes a little patience to get the app up and running. Stick with it.Once the app is fully connected, you're good to go. You can now stream your music files through your phone, although if you want to play Flac files you must convert them ACC, which is easy enough with AVS Audio Converter. All in all, I love this device as it does exactly what I want it to. Recommended if you need storage for your iphone or other device.

I love this. It has revolutionised my daily commute. I have a large collection of DVD's which, since the arrival of twins I have been unable to watch. I have successfully ripped these to an SD card and a memory stick and can now watch them in the relative sanity of my daily journey into London. No more dvd's gathering dust for me! It is dead easy to operate and understand and verbatims support is very good also when I had a query. It has operated with an iphone 4 and a nexus 7 (2012) without issue. In terms of moving files too and from I have only moved one file from the verbatim to my iphone 'just because' I haven't tried it the other way and to be honest, I don't think I need that function. The streaming side of things is superb and what's more its great value to boot. I thoroughly recommend this product. My only concerns are that it gets quite warm when in use. I was keeping mine in a hard drive carrying case but it got really hot so it now is in an outer pocket of my bag when in use. Also, the scrubbing function is difficult when watching a film and I would like the option to continue from where I left a film, if I shut the app down. It doesn't want to do that which means I have to use the aforementioned rubbish scrubbing function to get to the point I was at!

Works well, good value for money for the features and functions. Its Mediashare IOS and Android App are poor, app is very basic for file management as it does not handle folders at all. Luckily there are many other free apps to do file managment, e.g. create folders and to move files and to rename folders and files. In IOS I used a Remote File Manager Free (only manage one device for free version) to manager files (there are two others: FileExplorer Free, Rmanager). In Android I used X-Plorer to do file management on it. In WIndows Vista to 8 it is samba file share is inbuilt and of course Windows access this device too. It writes at about 1MBytes/s (1GB takes about 15 mins.) in my configuration which is,USB 3 disk reading, writing to a memory card that is 20MB/s write capable for large video files. Streaming video is fine for one device though I have not tested with more devices. Its main functions: battery, samba transfer, pass through to internet for surfing while connected to its wifi, SD slot and USB slot (for hard disk).

So I have mac and a windows laptop and have been able to set this up from both just fine. I am often getting trains about the country, I connect this up to my portable hard drive and leave it in my bag overhead. Then stream to my iPad and this works perfectly and I have not had an issue with it what so ever. The biggest surprise to me was how long the battery lasted, I have yet had it die on me during a journey so I can only speculate that it lasts (for me at least) at least 4 hours streaming for at least 3 of those.Setup is relatively easy, switch it on and go to your web browser and type in 10.10.10.254 and use the wizard to set it up (username admin with a blank password). If wireless internet is needed then use the wizard to connect the device up to your wifi connection, then you connect to the device, the internet connection then passes through the device and you also get access to the usb drive that you have connected. So works perfectly with iPAD (I have gen3 and keep it up to date), macbook and windows 7/8/8.1.

Thought it had stopped working after 6 months (refused to charge) but it turned out to be a failing USB hub. This had successfully charged the device many times but when it failed I assumed that the device was at fault but I was wrong. Very helpful dialogue with Verbatim customer services and if the product had been at fault I'm sure they would have sorted something out. As it happens the device is now charged up (via an Apple mains charger) and I'll be shopping for a new hub.As for the device itself, it's very handy for viewing photos from an SD card or listening to music if you have a phone or iPad with limited memory. Streaming is good and loading doesn't take too long. The software itself looks a bit dated and, although t's difficult to explain why, it doesn't work just how I'd like it to hence 4 and not 5 stars - mainly appearance I think but that doesn't affect performance. However, very easy to use, very portable, and as long as you remember to keep it charged up works a treat.
