I have not purchased the item from Amazon this time but I thought I would write a review as it is such a good device. It is quad core with only 1Gb RAM but is able to run multiple apps with ease. It is not the fastest of devices but covers all the important things. One thing to be aware of is that it does not run Plex, which will be a show stopper for some. The reason for this is that it is using an ARMv8 processor without backward compatibility. Plex may be developed for ARMv8 but there is no timeline at present. You can however use the excellent (if not quite as polished) DS Video app from Synology, it has an app for Apple (including Apple TV) and Android but there is no smart TV app that I am aware of.The devices party trick is using DS Video it can transcode 4k video. All in all a great first NAS and when Plex is developed it will be even better. I would recommend it highly for a first NAS if you don't need any local data resilience.Plex is now available in Alpha - even better device now. Check the Plex/Synology forums for more info.

I bought this to replace an aging Seagate Goflex Home when its disk finally failed, and also because the admin interface was becoming less easily accessed on modern browsers due to Flash requirements etc. The GFH had functioned successfully for many years as a central file server and DLNA media server, plus a network printer server. So far I've found the DS118 to be easy to set up and administer. The user interface is good, and there seems to be plenty of apps available to install if needed. Read and write speed seems good. I've made use of Hyper Backup to establish a data backup regime to a USB disk which then lives off-site.The DLNA support offers slightly different folder structures to the Goflex Home but still perfectly usable.USB print serving works ok,though it is slightly irritating that the printer totally disappears from the network when switched off: the old GFH would queue prints until the printer were switched back on. We don't use the printer enough to warrant it being left on 24/7.

First time NAS user. When it comes to technology I like to keep things simple, so I was a bit apprehensive about this purchase. Fortunately it turned out to be very straight forward, just put the hard drive inside and plug it into the router, then you're taken through a simple formatting set-up procedure. Pretty sure anyone could set this thing up. Interface is easy to navigate although most of the settings are of no interest to me as all I'm using it for is a Plex media server, again very easy to set up and all working perfectly. Only issue I'm having is actually copying movies across which is very slow for me, but this is more down to my wifi network,so what I'm doing is just plugging a USB stick straight into the back and transfering this way instead. It's really quiet and low power, I've worked out it's only costing me £1 a month to have it running 24/7. Overall happy with this purchase and hopefully it will prove to be reliable in the long term.

A very good mid-range NAS.Specifications...- Quad Core 64bit CPU running at 1.4GHz- 1GB DDR4 RAM memory- 112 MB/sec data transfer (reading & writing) - Confirmed IRL- HD & 4K Video Hardware Transcoding on-the-fly- 2 x USB3 Sockets on the back.- DSM 6 (Disk Station Manager)Cautions -- Space for 1 hard drive only. No redundancy, so shouldn't be used as the one-and-only backup.- Internal Hard Drive is EXT4 only. No btrfs. There is not much else to say, other than it works flawlessly, is very fast & responsive, and transfers data at the upper limit of what is possible on a gigabit network. Finally, DSM 6.2 is just the best software interface I've come across for checking & altering network settings.DSM allows you to install apps of various sorts to increase the NAS functionality in multimedia or backup. Definitely recommended.

I bought this 3 months ago. It’s my second synology NAS, I have an old DS112J too. I use the old NAS as my primary storage and synchronise the content to this device. The purpose of buying this was to use as a Plex server for viewing movies. The device supports the Plex server as an installed application and it works brilliantly, it’s quiet (I have located it next to my TV in my lounge) and being black in colour it blends in well with the devices around it. You can switch off the activity and status lights. My family don’t even know it’s there! I have a 4TB WD red drive in it. The whole bundle cost approx £260.I’m not sure how it would perform if any significant video translation were required,I suspect not very well, but if you’re looking for that then you should be buying a higher end device.

This was bought as a replacement for another NAS, and so far it's performing ok. Others have commented on the speed, and yes, data transfer from the old drive was very painful indeed (we did it folder by folder over several nights). However, this drive is used in an office environment (i.e. no large media files), and in this setting its speed is perfectly adequate during daily operations. But given the experience during data migration, I wouldn't want to shift large data volumes to and from the drive on a daily basis. The software is fine, we used the supplied Windows app to set up users and passwords without any undue stress, and are also able to access files from Android (sorry, no Apple devices present,so I cannot comment).

I'm a software developer and I've been testing a few different brands to make sure my software works properly. It's connecting to a NAS box's built-in MySQL Server (in this case mariaDB).Brands like WD are actually more solid - they seem better built but inside even the more recent WD boxes is quite an old processor so I had to do quite a bit of tweaking to my software to make it work with the low powered WD devices. But this Synology flies. It's got a fast, recent, 64 bit processor and a ton of memory. If you're looking for a solid door stop or a step to reach a top shelf then get the WD. But if you want a fast device and you don't mind putting it somewhere safe so it doesn't get kicked or stoodon then get this synology.

Having used an older ds116 with 1tb of storage for 6 months I was used to the Synology NAS. When I started to run out of space I invested in a newer ds118 with a WD 4tb HDD. As NAS units go it's about as simple to set up and use as any. There's lots of online help so I've not encountered any problems or issues yet. It's super quiet, you cannot hear it in operation, and as well as streaming about 750gb of music to my Squeezebox Touch, I've also started copying my music dvds which I'm watching on my smart TV.

Easy to set up, everything I tried worked well. There are a few slightly fiddly things like assigning users of the Audio tool permissions to play on DLNA devices, but nothing that 2 minutes of googling couldn't overcome.Only big drawback is that Audio Station can't do gapless playback - so hopeless for mixed CDs and gapless albums. You can connect using a different player, but it's more hassle and there's no good reason why this basic feature shouldn't be included....

Set up was easy. It was instantly recognised by home wifi and by windows desktop, smartphone and smart TV. Machine is always left on and has been working a treat with 3tb Seagate Ironwolf for nas. There is a lot of free Synology software to play with. A nice bit of kit for home use. I would definitely buy Synology again. Ps I didn't need regular back up so can only comment on the one bay drive. I back up on a separate hard drive.

Bought it primarily as a music server. Works really well though the built in Synology music server does not work with my Cambridge CXN network player. I installed MinimServer and that works with the CXN. MinimServer is an available download from Synology so no compatibility issues. I also installed BubbleUPnP Server which enables me to listen to my music anywhere with BubbleUPnP on my android phone.

Bought this as an archive drive, Big fan of Synology - great technology, design and performance. Simple to install, and very good management software. Automatically goes into standby, saving disc wear. WD Red (Western Digital) drives are excellent. Not the cheapest but well worth paying the extra for if you want some of the best storage devices on the market (in my opinion).

I currnetly have a ds115 and ds215 which are ok for purpose.. but now this ds118 is fast, much much faster and i use it for watching movies of blu ray quality around 6 - 10gb in size. the media server and video station part of it is fast and load thumb nails really quick on a smart tv..... just wish this was around years ago as this one is perfect

This Synology 118 replaced a 6 year old 112+ Nas,which was beginning to struggle a wee bit!.Needless to say the new unit is superb value for money with a quad core cpu / 1gb DDR4 ram,I swapped my WD RED 2 TB drive over to the 118 with no fuss.It sits silently 24 hrs daily ...fit and forget...Well done Synology

I'm not an IT expert but I've completed the set-up with reasonable ease and it is working well as storage for all of the household. I've not managed to get any of the mobile apps to work yet, but this is possibly due to me not using the correct settings to allow that. Still a work in progress.
