As a person who has literally grown up with Simon the Sorcerer and the Monkey Island series at his side, I couldn't resist buying this when I realised it was available in the uk finally; and generally, I'm not disappointed by Simon 4: Chaos happens.First, I'll get the criticism out of the way. As a lover of the past games in the series, the new (german) developers only went wrong in three respects.1. The voice acting. How they expected to get away with making every single character american is a mystery to me! One of the biggest charms of the older games was the fantastic voice acting and characterisation. In Simon 4 however, all of that goes out the window. Where did the cockney attitude of Goldilocks go?Why does Simon sound like an annoying brat rather than an angsty teenager? Maybe it's because Silver-Style wanted the game to be more american friendly but frankly I think it is sacreligous to the original games that they were replaced with american ameteurs. Sarcasm just doesn't work when spoken in an american accent.2. Simon's character. Carrying on from my first point, they have toned down and americanised Simons personality to death! The Simon of the first three games was a selfish, arrogant teenager who only "helped" people for his own personal gain after being dragged kicking and screaming to the magical world, yet from the start Simon in his forth iteration willingly jumps into the magical world like a "proper" hero! At points he seems to be genuinely sorry when he upsets people. Worrying? Very. They have just made him too nice!!!3. Sordid who?. Sordid is worryingly NOT the antagonist. Maybe it's just me, but after three games of trying to defeat Sordid, and with the third leaving him ambiguously missing, I was dissapointed to find him missing with only one mention of him at all. I'm holding out hope that Simon 6 will yield an end to the dark lord. Now thats done with, its time to praise the game for all it's worth. Please bare in mind that I played the entire game with the voices off, imagining the original voice actors saying the dialogue. The gameplay is fantastic. I'v never played an adventure game with such an easy-to-use interface. Ditching the FULL 3D of Simon 3D, this game goes back to the fixed camera perfection of the first two. A brilliant move if you ask me, as it plays just like an old-school adventure. The puzzles are fun and interesting, but not overly taxing. Not once have I been left wondering "What next?" and feeling frustrated. The new characters are good and well-designed; I just wish I could have heard their voices in the style of Simon 1 or 2. Comedy-wise, there are some fantastic moments, such as those with Mr and Mrs Riding Hood, the Drunken Wolf and the Bridge Troll, however sometimes it falls flat with the clumsy dialogue. Regardless, the good bits are great and the bad bits are forgettable. The Graphic style, musical score and general background ambience are awesome. I was suprised at the all around quality of the stylistic elements, but the graphics are arguably the best seem in an adventure game to date, and the score could definately rival that of the Monkey island series. All in all, if you enjoyed the first three games, be warned. Simon is no longer the angry teenager of the original games and the dry wit and sarcasm has been lost in translation. However, it still functions as a solid adventure in its own right with some great moments. I would definately recommend a play, especially at this price, just with subtitles on, voices off.

Bypass the voicing problems and the game is very enjoyable. Unlike the other previous games you cant be stuck on it for hours because you do not know where to go. There is a little guidance in the menus instructing you on what needs to be done which makes the game that bit more smoother and easier to enjoy. The voices aren't really that bad its just the swampling thats a bit annoying and that doesn't ruin the game as he is only in the game for like 5 minutes and is worth putting up with. Still worth buying if your a simon the sorcerer fan especially with the small price.

I have to disagree with the other reviews, each to their own.I thought it was a great game. I had no problems with the voices, The story was strong and the puzzles made you think out of the box. The graphics were very good as were the subtitles. I found the jokes funny and giggled a lot. The lenght was good at about 25 hours. The jounal helped as did the hot spot and exit buttons.I was a great fan of Simon 1 and 2 and was bitterly disapointed with 3 but 4 makes up for it
