First purchased silent hunter 2 back in 2001, now playing silent hunter 3 (sh3) and silent hunter 4 with u boat missions add on, a great franchise from ubisoft in my opinion.silent hunter 4 (sh4) is the best graphically of them all, although i prefer SH3 German campaign in the Atlantic, you just cant beat being in charge of a German u-boat.SH4 covers the pacific theatre, you play as a US Commander against the Imperial Japanese Navy.this is the best sub simulation franchise out there at the moment, and if you always wanted to know what it was like being a US submarine commander in WW 2 then this is the game for you. I also recommend SH3 for those interested in the German Atlantic campaign, not as good graphically but just as, if not more absorbing.most of the issues have been solved and there are numerous patches and mods out there to download for free which completely overhauls the gaming experience, making it a far better game. these modders have put in 100's of hours of work in their spare time for no financial gain to produce a better game, my hat goes off to you all, many thanks.i give the franchise 5 stars but SH4 only 4 stars, the reason being that SH2, SH3 AND SH4 have all been based in WW 2, the game play is the same and needs a new direction.silent hunter 5 is now under development and i would personally like to see the franchise brought forward into the cold war era, with nuclear/ diesel electric subs. perhaps on the lines of tom Clancy's red storm rising, which i used to play on the old commodore 64. this would be a refreshing change, using your sensors to track the enemy subs, deploying guided torpedoes and missiles etc instead of just attacking surface vessels like previous games.

I ran this game using my old PC and based on that experience I would have given the game 3 stars tops. The frame rate was pretty low and the game didn't flow as it did in SH3. So I was pretty dissapointed in this game and I stored it away. Then I bought a new PC equiped with a state of the art graphics card: 8800 GTX. The game ran fluently, the frame rate stayed on a more than decent level and the entire graphical aspect of the game was astonishing. So I reconsidered my evaluation to a 4.The game itself is pretty much the same as SH3. Instead of a german sub hunting allied ships, you are now in command of an american sub hunting japanese ships; so no big difference there. The biggest change has been the 'micromanagement' of the crew. In SH3 I was more involved in replacing crew and officers to sleeping quarters than I was doing hunting. Especially on the longer missions to the US east coast. Now the AI rotates your crew is three shifts, easy! Don't forget to deactivate battle stations though! otherwise your crew stays on alert. Also the damage representation is more accurate than in SH3. Now you can locally see where the ship was hit and even see inside the ship once the outer hull has been breached! Very realistic. So why not 5 stars? Like many others I spoke with, I can't get the 'feeling' that I'm inside that 'iron coffin' waiting for the next depht charge to explode...In short, I loved SH3 and I like SH4.

Silent Hunter 4 is probably the most realistic sub sim availible. Not to mention one of the few. All possible implementable details are include in the game. Even traveling time. I.E. without using the time shift function, it can take 2 or 3 days to cross the Pacific. Tube loading times, crew fatigue, skill and rank. Fuel, betteries, oxygen, are all included to enhance the realisme of the game. With sections such as crew management, damadge control, navigation and detection systems, it truley is a game to be played by the Submarine enthusiaste. Manual firing of torpedoes and other armaments requires ALOT of skill and patience, and is definatly something to practice to enhance the realisme further. But in the beginning you can switch to Autocrew and slowly learn bit by bit.Online multiplay....?? Had a look to see if anyone was online. No one!! Not somthing that is widley played online over the internet apparently. HOWEVER... i did enlist the help of a friend and setup a home network. Instantly the game was trasformed to a whole new level. Working as a team to take out the ships in the multiplayer scenarios was a blast. Dropping coutermeasures and decoys to draw them away from you team mate, or timeing that last torpedo to hit at exactly the same time as your allie. Definalty a team building exercice.Overall.... Hours of fun if you got the patience to learn a little.

Firstly, my advice is to ignore the fools who bought this game without checking how fast there computer is and what the minimum specs are too run it, you need a good system put it that way, but always check you meet reccomended specs and never buy a game if you only meet minimum, you won't get much enjoyment from it.. anywaySimply put this game is amazing!! i'd never played the silent hunter series before but this game took my breath away, It's in depth but you can pick up the basics with a few tutorial missions in about 30mins,The realism and graphics are incredible, you can set how realistic you want it, but you get most enjoyment when you really do your homework on submarine warfare and set it to a realistic setting.Getting within 1000 yards of a Japanese battleship and firing a full spread from your foreward torpedo tubes, then coming about and letting off your aft torpedos is amazing, but the enemy arent daft, they've got ways of finding and killing you.You can start your career as a submarine captain, choosing from a variety of US submarines out in the Pacific off the coast of japan, you recruit your crew, each with their own specialisations, you can earn medals and experience for your actions. If you like realism, and enjoyed the film U571 then you will fall in love with this game! it doesn't get much better

Having just visited U-995 near Kiel and been on board a real U-boat, not only did I watch "Das Boot" again but I booted up this game having left it for a few weeks. The game graphics are brilliant on my high end PC and the action is tense and unnerving but, as in real life I guess, preceeded by a huge amount of steaming through large tracts of ocean where little or nothing happens for long periods of time. The game time can be increased to reduce this "downtime" but you run the risk of something happening too quickly - partcicularly from enemy aircraft. Playing online works well although this part of the game is more of a fairground line 'em up shoot than a strategic hunt of elusive targets through huge areas of ocean than is the solo game, but enjoyable nevertheless if you can find others that are online at the same time. External camera angles are a treat if you allow them for yourself and as your submarine steams into the distance you can leave your camera over that stricken vessel you have hit midships and watch it slowly slide into the depths. The goose bumps will raise on the back of your neck.

As a fan of silent hunter 3, i was not dissapointed with this game whatso-ever.I think the main qualms with the other reviewers, is they expected their computers to be able to just "play the new game" without even looking at the box.Lets get one thing straight, the graphics on this game truly are some of the best ive seen on pc so far, (in terms of realism) and give a thoroughly good kicking to any decent PC on full whack.(watch the ingame trailers from their site for some clue.)This isnt just another 'update' - the graphics have been completely overhauled, and do require some very decent firepower. In terms of gameplay it lives up to its predecessor very well, and still has all the tense action from the last installment.(being 'pinged' - only to bring up the periscope and see a destroyer about 10 meters away steaming right at you,can be pretty nerve-wracking!)If your pc is good enough, and you like sims, try it out, i dont think you'll be dissapointed.

This game is amazing! To start off with the graphics are brilliant. you can watch the crew fire the deck guns out of the periscope. Even better is when a ship is blown up. Damage is taken from where the gun (or torpedo) hits. Such as a torpedo to th motor would immobilize the ship, and a shell to the weapon would stop it from firing. The event cameras also worth maxamising to watch torpedo release and impact. The sound is even better (if you haven't turned it off for better performance). the sounds come when you surface or sink the boat, with pumps. The gameplay is best on 91%, with 'no weapons officer assistance' (you can get assistance in firing torpedos) off and 'no event camera'off (you can watch the exiting bits)! However, i think this game requires Windows Vista to get full performance, and there are no cheats (realism acts similarly).

After almost a year since this sims release the game is now acheiving it's full potential thanks both to the persistence of the Ubisoft devteam in bug-stomping & the Subsim community in the development of many fantastic free mods widening & deepening an already fantastic simulation.Recent improvments have shortened loading times and a new dynamic loading system has improved the speed of the game on less 'state of the art PCs'The graphics in this sim are simply stunning as is the overall atmosphere. For those who desire U-Boats rather than the US fleet boats included in the main game Ubisoft have recently released an add-on disc (available separately)with a "U-Boats in the Pacific" Campaign this also features strategic control over air reconnaisance & task forces.

Unfortunately it never came. I had ordered it to replace my original SH4, which to date remains one of the best computer simulation games ever, not just a typical war 'shoot 'em up' game. One has to really do some thinking to outwit Captain Watanabe of the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer command and his ship captains - fictional name I made up. Graphics are outstanding, displays of equipment equally so, and tactical views through periscopes/TBT/gunsights are fantastic. I even saw a sailor taking a leak off the side of IJN YAMATO as she passed by my boat at periscope depth, not something one sees in everyday sims.

Continuing the success of its predecessors Silent Hunter 4 will fascinate fans of this particular genre. No PC game is devoid of glitches but what really counts, what is the remaining aftertaste after having a go at a game is all about playability and atmosphere, both of which are considerable throughout the game.

Excellent game about the wolves and their preys. Reminds me of the VERY old game 'Das Boot', but with the graphics of nowadays. Graphics are well done, you don't need a super machine to run it. Make sure you have 2 GB internal!

really had fun with this game as it was different from my other submarine games which had me sailing in german u- boats as i was in usa submarines fighting the japanese and germans well worth a look

You need this and the U Boat missions patch in order to convert it with one of the great mega-mods over at the SubSim forum. Once converted the game is epic - everything upgraded and improved

A great game in fact no other game has this simulator quality. All though it might be a bit dated it still stands the test of time. Hours just seem to melt away with game play.
