I have the Canon M50 mirrorless camera. Canon’s dedicated lenses for the camera though well made, are limited in some ways, most notably but their relatively slow apertures. That hasn’t stopped me enjoying them, but I was hoping Canon would bring something new out. Sigma have beaten them to it, and then some!I already own the 16mm sigma AF DC DN lens and thats amazingly sharp and crisp. The 56mm is just as good. Given the APS-C element and the canon 1.6 crop factor the 56mm becomes effectively a 90mm F/1.4 lens, which is great as a dedicated portrait lens. It’s the main reason I bought this lens and I have used it a few times already and it does not disappoint. It’s a great ‘low light’ beast, yet, its physical form is so deceptively small (especially compared to its 16mm sister)The build quality is excellent too, it doesn’t feel ‘plastic’ at all. It forms part of their contemporary lenses family as denoted by the little silver ‘C’ on the camera body. I have been fortunate to use several sigma Art lenses, the big brothers of the contemporary line and I can tell you, the quality and build of the contempory lenses is just as good. This lens is bitingly sharp with excellent contrast. The auto focus is just as good, in my opinion, as the dedicated Canon lenses I have, I havent noticed any reduced speed at all.If you are in the market for a new lens for your Canon M series camera, thats not going to break the bank, that will actually out perform the canon lenses for the M series, then you definitely should consider this lens.Finally... Image Stabilisation. No, this camera doesnt have it. The camera body has internal IS which can be switched on. Bloggers wouldn’t generally use this lens to vlog with anyway unless you were using it to get some awesome b-roll. If you were looking for that, then consider a gimbal, or simply learn to use the lens better. It’s definitely doable without IS with this lens.

I've only had the lens for a week and I already own the Sony 85mm 1.8 (paired with my Sony A7iii), so my review is based in initial experience and how it comapres to my Sony 85mm lens (which cost £185 more):- It's smaller than I expected - shorter than the Sony 85mm 1.8 but feels a similar weight- It feels cheap and rubbery compared to the smoother finish and more premium feel of the Sony lenses- The focus is very fast - not quite as fast as the Sony but fast enough for moderate action e.g. kids and my dog- The sharpness is on a par with the Sony- The bokeh (background blur) is not as creamy as the Sony but the bokeh balls are of a nicer, rounder shape - important for lights more than anything else- The Sony has a dedicated focus button which is helpful for portraitsIf you have the Sony 50mm 1.8 APS-C lens, then this lens would be a big step-up in terms of sharpness and quality of bokeh, but it doesn't have image stablisation. The overall picture quality with my Sony A6500 is really close to my A7III with the 85mm 1.8, but costs more than £1,000 less, so if price and compact size are important to you, then this is a great deal.

I got my Siggy 56mm for my Pen-F in a sale with a discount.Even at full price this is exceptional value in comparison to other lens. The large f1.4 aperture permits acceptable images in lower light conditions. Use your Live View or similar to view the image to see if its acceptable, very easy to use.The lens is quick to focus in usual light levels, accuracy dropping off as light lessens. This is in line with all lens, the less available light the less competence in the autofocus department.Equally at home in video, the autofocus is very quiet and shouldnt be audible on screen.I was (needlessly) worried about size, however fits fine on my Pen-F as shown in the images. It is way smaller than the Sigma 30mm f1.4 or Olympus 75mm lens, bigger than Olympus 25mm/45mm lens.Mine has a circular polariser on which adds to the size ever so slightly.Unlike some lens manufacturers, Sigma have the kindly foresight to INCLUDE the lens hood - thank you Sigma and please take note other manufacturers!Definetly a worthy lens to any m4/3 camera, DV or drone body, this is very good value lens that wont disappoint.

Has quickly become one of my most used lenses, and brilliant especially for indoor events and concerts. Sharp wide open, though better stopped down a notch or two as the depth of field is very shallow at f/1.4. Sharper at f/1.8 than the Olympus 45mm, and to my eyes better, richer, nicely saturated colour rendition, a feature I appreciate about all the Sigma lenses I own.Getting this lens completes the Sigma fast prime trinity alongside the 16 and 30mm. All are excellent, but the 56 is the most consistent of the three - none of the slight focus hunting of the 30mm, and sharper wide open than the 16mm, as well as being the least bulky. Was thinking about getting the Olympus 75mm,but no need - the Sigma plus an old teleconverter gives me the equivalent and more in terms of reach and speed. Trust-wise, this is on a par with the Oly PRO zooms in my opinion. So if the focal length is one you can use on m43, this lens is an essential addition. Beats the Oly 45 f/1.8 hands down, and a considerable saving in weight and price over the 45 f/1.2. Massive salute to Sigma for this absolute winner.

This is a superb lens for micro four thirds. The 56mm focal length equates to 112mm on full frame making this a really useful portrait lens. Build quality is excellent and it is the smallest and lightest of Sigma's f1.4 trio of lenses for mirrorless cameras, so fits nicely alongside the smaller Olympus or Panasonic lenses. However, the best thing about this lens is that it's very sharp. Even at f1.4 the central image quality is excellent; stop it down a little and it's sharp across the entire frame. I frequently use it with my Olympus 12-40 f2.8 Pro zoom to give a fast twin lens outfit covering most focal lengths for general shooting. I have quite a number of micro four thirds lenses, but this lens stands out as one of my favourites.

I bought this lens off the back of buying the 30mm DC DN one for my 6300. All I can say is it’s fabulous. As sharp - if not sharper - than the 30mm and excellent in low light. 56mm on an APS-C sensor camera equates to 84mm on full frame - so this is a perfect portrait lens. Bokeh is creamy and the image is so bright. Only issue for me is that the 56mm is not automatically detected by Lightroom when processing the RAW files ... there is a Sigma 56mm DC DN profile available in LR but you have to manually select it. Hopefully this will get sorted in LR. As mentioned above, no OSS so need a gimbal if you are into video ... or keep arms extra steady. It's not too bad without OSS though.

Even wide open this lens is super sharp! I've found that it's hard to find sharp glass on the micro four thirds system but this lens has blown me away, in fact I'd say its the sharpest lens I've ever used on any system. The attached image is a 100% crop at 1.4 with the focus point on the eye, look carfully and you can see my reflection as I take the shot. The focus can be hit and miss but this is mainly dependant on the body the lens is on, I use single point focus which I find has a better hit rate. For portraits and headshots this lens is ideal and punches way above its pricepoint.

For the money(~£400) this is a fantastic lens. I've owned the sigma 30mm, Sony 18-70mm, and Sony 35mm alongside the stock lens. For photography on an a6300 this lens is as sharp as the 30mm,whilst being smaller and more portable. Auto focus is almost as fast as a Sony lens and certainly never an issue. For video, OSS helps significantly in my experience, but the image quality is still fantastic,i imagine this would be even better on an A6500.Overall this is a great portrait lens and strongly recommended on a apsc lens.

This is the third lens in the Sigma Trio of lenses for the Canon M Mount rated at F1.4 and as such produces wonderful images. I have been using this lens for some of my filming for my YouTube channel Roving Chestnut and it has worked well for normal daytime filming, low light filming and Slo Motion filming. I have also used this lens on both the Canon EOS M50 and Canon EOS M6 mk2. The results I have been getting make my filming look the best it has ever been!

The lens with its 56mm focal length is suitable for portaiture work on MFT Cameras (112mm full frame equivalent). Sharpness is very good wide open all over the frame, with only litte chromatic abberations and vignetting. This is probably due to the smaller image circle required by MFT (Lens actually constructed for APS-C). Build quality is really good, too. Definitely recommended.

This is my first dalliance into the world of fixed focal length prime lenses. Purchased for my A6000 mirrorless camera. It is great quality. Metal body with a large rubber focus ring which is very tactile. Paired it with the Gobe NDX filter. Cannot wait to take this to Paris and see what I can capture.

Best portrait lens for APSC by far, the best way in my opinion of getting into portrait photography with a quality lens on a budget.

4.2.2019

Fantastic lens. Optically very sharp with no ca. The focus is good, not great, but better than sigma 30 1.4.

love this lens, works like a dream on the a6400, this combo is almost as good as the full frame a7iii.
