If survival horror is your bag then Shadows of the Damned is not for you. This is pure, manic, unashamedly grotesque gunplay with shout outs to horror staples from all over the world. With visual references to works such as Cannibal Holocaust, it's not for the light of heart or stomach. If, however, you love everything Hellbound and don't mind getting bloodstains on your Sunday best, then you're in for an amusing, splatterific ride.Shadows of the Damned sees the player loping around the Underworld, with its protagonist in search of his lost love who has been kidnapped by a rather narked Devil who is fed up with losing his demon army to an arrogant, tattoo-riddled lout who has a talking gun. While sympathy is in short supply (she is a vapid, underdeveloped non-entity, he is... an arrogant, tattoo-riddled lout) kicking down the demons' door and giving them Hell makes for a satisfying shooter, although there are no true scares. Mild panic arrises when the player is shrouded in "Darkness" which drains away at one's soul before making for the health bar, but finding sources of light to re-illuminate the area is rarely a challenge. When taking things at a stroll, your companion Johnsson (essentially Wheatley from Portal 2 but in the shape of a floating skull) fills the silence with quips and anecdotes which are, for the most part, mildly entertaining. It's a shooter. It's a mindless, bloody shooter set in Hell. It has snappy dialogue and some brilliant Boss level set pieces. It doesn't ask for emotional investment, or even an ounce of intelligence. It just asks you pull the trigger and enjoy.

Shadows of the damned is a strange title. It is heavily inspired by cult horror comedy movies and it shows through. If you are a fan of movies like 'The Evil Dead' then no doubt you will enjoy the atmosphere and humour. How much you enjoy the game will probably depend on your liking for that type of genre mixed with if you have enjoyed the unusual titles from Suda before (Killer 7, No More Heroes).Stylistically the game is fantastic, a wonderfully over the top and cool world. The graphics are good but nothing to write home about. The humour and story are very much up to taste. There is a lot of juvenile humour, gratuitous nudity and violence so if that isn't your thing then perhaps it's not the game for you.The problems for the game come in the amount of content and some gameplay problems. The gameplay is okay but really if you played Resident Evil 4 then you pretty much know what you are getting. Although the aiming doesn't feel quite as tight as that game. However it features the same mix of good scenes and bosses. At around 10hours the game is of a quite good length however there is no multiplayer, no co-op, no new game plus and no chapter select. So unless you like replaying games on harder difficulties you may find yourself feeling a little short changed. If you like stylized games, Horror comedy, the unusal grasshopper manufacture products and doing multiple playthroughs then you will likely enjoy SotD greatly. If not then well perhaps it isn't the game for you.

Felt compelled to post because this game is getting an undeservedly bad rap, mainly due to misinformed expectations. Above everything else this is a Grasshopper game, the niche Japanese studio resposible for bringing Travis Touchdown and the Heaven's Smiles to our screens in the demented No More Heroes and Killer7 respectively. Suda 51, creative director of Grasshopper is a fierce individualist, fuelled by a punk aesthetic. Also a true postmodernist, he creates games that critique gamers and games themselves.Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil 4 produced this game and Shadow's pulses with his tight gunplay, but if anything this is a parody of Resi4. At one point,Hotspur has to solve a typically inane Resi4 style logic puzzle to get through a blocked door. 'I f**king hate puzzles!' he quips. You feel that Grasshopper have given Mikami a platform to take an affectionate swipe at his own legacy, and he relishes the opportunity.Akira Yamaoka of Silent Hill is responsible for the foley and the score, and it's one of the best I've heard this year. Blasting from a decent Dolby 5:1 system it's genuinely unsettling and really quickens the pulse during the frenetic battles. It's also very funny, Yamaoka often dropping audio completely juxtaposed to what's happening onscreen.Shadow's is infused with the spirit of grindhouse cinema and if you enjoyed Robert Rodriguez's modern foray Planet Terror, you will find plenty to enjoy in this guilty pleasure. Go Grasshopper!

Shadows of the Damned is an action video game developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and published by Electronic Arts for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles. The game follows the story of Garcia Hotspur, a Mexican demon hunter who goes to the City of the Damned to battle its evils in order to save his true love.If your looking for a shooter with plenty of action and plenty of violence then look no further, this is one bloodthirsty ride into hell literally, the game has a great story from beginning to end, plenty of shooting and some puzzle elements, the game is third person, there is plenty of humour, lots of vulgar dialogue and nudity and tons of sick gore and violence so if that sort of thing is not for you be warned, the graphics are pretty decent for an old 360 game and it still great go back too and play now, plentiful achievements to earn to boost your game score, the boss fights are insane on this game and are unforgettable, there is many cool and original elements of gameplay here that you wont have seen before and some that are familiar but on a whole this is a gem of a game worth digging back up!!Look out for the EVIL DEAD inspired stage in the cabin, its great. You get plenty great weapons, plenty ammo if your on easy, but be careful the harder settings pose a challenge.

This game is one of the most unique and entertaining games that I have ever come across. It's action packed from start to finish with many quirky jokes from the programmers and level designers for the keen eye to find. Although your choice of weapons seems very limited at the start of the game (you can get 4), each weapon evolves several times over the course of the game to give bizzare variations of the previous version of the gun. The gameplay itself always gives off new and fun ways to play the different sections of the game and you will never be bored from any limited gameplay like you can in most other games. There are several references other games and films such as a scene where you re-enact part of the film "Evil Dead".This is sure to give a chuckle to anyone over the age of 18 who are able to appreciate such an amazing game which unfortunately did not get anywhere near as much publicity as it should have.

A great game with game play reminiscent of Resident Evil 4, with a spontaneous arcade spin to the feel. The game reeks of the Suda 51 mad humour, with an extra abundance of cock references and puns throughout, giving the game entertaining spin to what most gamers are accustomed to.Much of the game is astounding with great presentation, level design, enemies to fight, and a knock back to how boss battles should be done. Most players should manage the game at about 7 hours game time and really enjoy their time with it, however some may find issues with side scrolling shooter sections and the total lack of replay options. The game is soo worth getting for it's unique feel, and the first play through will be highly enjoyable, however it leaves me with a tear in my eye due to the lack of a level select or any motivation of repeated play through.

I have debated whether to give this game a 4-star or 5-star review. I have to go with 5 stars. This is one of the most diverse games I have played, not to mention HILARIOUS!!!! If you like nasty, sexual humor, plus killing demons, then this is definitely the game for you. There are even stages of the game which have the feel of atari and other beginning systems games. The rest of the game has modern graphics. It has fairly easy game play, as far as progressing through the game, with only a few spots that need practice for achievement. The plot line is a little eh, which is one reason I debated with 4 stars. However, the diversity and humor just completely wash out the mediocre plot.Definitely worth the money and time!!

Now, firstly, this game DOES have some flaws. Having played through three times (as achievements for difficulty do NOT stack) certain parts of the game drove me mental. There are certain parts that just seem to go on forever and I also found the story slightly confusing and pointless in places.BUT what made me give this 5 stars was the art style, the character design, the voice acting and just the amount of fun I had playing it really..The smutty jokes aren't really as bad as I thought..sometimes I rolled my eyes but It's nothing worse than I see or hear every day on TV or from that friend I don't really like..SO BUY IT!Enjoy yourself!

Just picked this up the other day, and to tell you the truth, the only problem I have with it is the number of loading screens and how long it takes to load, other than that, this is a fantastic bit of fun if you're just looking for a good monster shooter. The humor is fantastic (depends on you taste), the puzzle mechanics are clever, and the story is incredibly cheesy! I would highly recommend this!

This game is pretty simple but is really funny and engaging!!!You'll love G and Johnson at first sight!Grafically is not a miracle, but it's better than a lot of bigger titles! So I recommend it if you would like to spend some time in Hell killing demons and Dark Angels!

The game itself was interesting, but I would call the game play dull and sometimes frustrating with the aiming. However it is ultimately rewarding but it's not a game you'd want to play a second time. I suggest people take a look at reviews of this game on youtube.

Great and fun game that deserved much more praise than it got, great 3rd person shooter for those who like a nice and fun story, along with a joyous and over the top humour. Too short though
