First thing to say is I am a beginner. Never even used one of these, let alone owned and set one up and I have to say that if you're debating whether or not you want to give it a try then you should do it as they are brilliant!Package arrived all as described with a Sandisk Micro SD card with Noobs installed to make set up nice and easy. However I bought the Pi for the specific purpose of running LMS (see below) and had done some research before it arrived. This research led me to a website called Max2Play where you can download an image for free to burn to an SD card to be used for Pi installation instead of the Noobs image supplied. Using this method, everything can be done from a browser on you laptop meaning you don't need the Pi connected to a monitor or have a keyboard connected. You simply need to connect the PI to your network via ethernet (for initial set up, wifi comes later in the process) then open the admin page in a browser on your laptop/tablet etc. From here I could install LMS, Kodi, input wifi settings etc. All very simple and straight forward. The only issue I had is for set up I couldn't get it to connect via ethernet homeplugs for some reason but with a direct ethernet cable to the router it was fine. Google Max2play to find the website. Please note, the following paragraph is based on internet research along with trial and error and will only be of interest to those interested in using the Pi for LMSI bought this for a specific reason and that is to run Logitech Media Server (LMS) for the purposes of streaming my music files to Squeezeboxes around the house. As LMS users with a Qnap Nas maybe aware, there are some security issues with using LMS installed on a Qnap so Qnap have removed it as an official package for their NAS units. There are work arounds but it is suggested the best thing is to remove LMS from Qnap NAS units completely and run it on a Pi instead. To be clear, the security issue is not with LMS itself but with SSOTS which is a programme the Qnap's installs alongside LMS in order to make it work. The Raspberry Pi doesn't need SSOTS for LMS so eliminates the security issue. I have the Pi now set up running LMS 7.9, music files still stored on the Qnap and all seems to be running fine so far. An easy work around to those security issues and all for well under £50!

I use Linux on my desktop and laptop and wanted a small pc to hook up to my TV in the lounge. I already had a wireless keyboard with integral touchpad, one of those electric plug sockets that directs your internet signal through the mains, so all I needed to buy was the Raspberry Pi.I bought the kit to get a case, the SD card with software on and a proper power adapter.I got my wife to fit the bits together, no real problems, just be firm when pressing the circuit board into the case, it gives a solid click sound when done correctly.Attach all the cables, set the TV to the HDMI channel and switch on the Pi at the mains socket. Mine went straight through and installed Raspbian, the books seem to suggest that you might be given the option of installing other operating systems but I must have missed something. The whole process of installation took maybe 10 minutes, and .....I think it is really good, a fully working computer with Linux for about 50 pounds.Later on I bought another 16gb SD card, class 10, formatted it, added Noobs and put that card into the Pi and installed Raspian and some Kodi specific operating systems, the details of doing that are in the Raspberry Pi Foundation support pages. Two small grumbles, the case is a bit light so the stiffness of the HDMI cable moves the case, there are metal cases available, and it seems that with the Pi 3 you have to "pull" the SD card out with your finger nail, whereas the P i2 had a spring loaded eject mechanism, a backward step in my opinion, as my nails are very brittle, hence me putting a number of operating systems on one card and selecting which one I want on boot up.Oh, one more minor grumble, how do you switch it on? I have the TV on and the Pi off, select the HDMI channel on the TV, then switch the Pi on, it then starts everytime, if I switch the Pi on first and then switch on the TV then the Pi does not find the TV, it may be unique to my TV.What projects do I think I might do, well I could learn some programming on raspbian, I want to make a PVR on Kodi, I want to make a clock that runs at 12 times faster than normal time to use with my model railway for running a scheduled service, and maybe even run the trains from the Pi.

Bought this mini computer as my main PC replacement after years of Apple Macbook use. I've changed career path and now life on a budget as I work on reinventing myself and needed a new computer because my 9 yr old macbook was giving out on me. I realized that 95% of the time I use a computer for word processing and to surf the web a little. I also have never used Linux before. I have always wanted to get away from Windows and Apple and try Linux, but in the past I didn't feel like I was up for the challenge. The Raspberry Pi3 is a great product because it gives you hardware and software solution so that you don't have to worry about compatibility messes and you can boot strait up and start using the computer!I use the Raspbian OS from the Noobs as my OS. I use FocusWriter for writing (a text editor), then Geany (text editor) and LibreOffice (word processor) for editing. I use Chromium for the web. I also use Pandoc for turning markdown text files into HTML and PDFs. And have found that getting my favorite fonts on my Pi to be a snap: Office Code Pro for writing on the screen and Courier Prime for printing onto paper. I'm super impressed with this little computer. I've never thought about a computer being "cute" -- but this one is. Love it! Beware though, you can't just hook up speakers or headphones and expect to get sound out of your Pi. At least didn't work for me. I'm guessing that you need some kind of sound card or something. Doesn't bother me because I don't need sound on my writing computer. I use my wife's Macbook for youtube and Netflixs :) Also, I should add that for browsing the web this ISN'T the computer to use if you want to have loads of tabs open!!! Get 5 Tabs up on Chromium is about as far as you want to go. You throw 10 Tabs open and that's about as much as this thing will handle before starting to choke. I'm guessing it's a RAM thing.

Oozing with nostalgic anticipation I unboxed the starter kit, and within 30 minutes (for a little fiddling around with some additional software from RetroPie), I had set up my very own retro games console, brilliant! It's true, with Raspberry Pi the possibilities are endless, but why add the extra cost of a starter kit? For me there are 2 key factors:1. Protect Your Pi! - Having the Pi sitting out in the open will expose it to dust, not to mention handling the device bare can in rare scenarios expose it to static damage, a worry I was none too keen on having. Luckily this solution offers a protective plastic case that can be assembled in minutes, a look and feel that's both robust and funky (I went with the white/red version)and accessibility to the key inputs on the Pi, including the ability to change the memory card without taking it out of the case.2. Affordability - The Raspberry Pi is around £30 on its own (at the time of writing this review), so for around an extra £16 I received:a) A durable housing to protect my Pi.b) A high speed Micro 16gb memory card.c) An SD card adapter (you put the micro SD in this to make it compatible with larger standard size SD card readers)d) A number of foreign plug socket adopters (for the geeks like me who like to travel with their technology).I browsed around for 15 minutes (until the anticipation of getting my Pi ordered took over) and I couldn't find a cheaper, high quality solution when purchasing the above components (or similar) separately on Amazon. So whatever you are doing with the Pi, remotely feeding your pets, making robots to take over the world... Or like me, getting a blast from the past with a retro games console... Be sure to consider the official starter kit, no regrets here!5/5 Stars

After years of service, my Super Nintendo squeaked its last squawk and the sound chip died. Consequently, it only plays games up to when the sound's supposed to start... that's pretty much before anything shows on the screen for most games. So, I did some research and came across this bundle of joy. It arrived in cute, but effective, little packaging and the whole thing was much smaller than I'd imagined. The case clips together around the Raspberry Pi 3 easily and fits perfectly.Although this versatile little machine has many, many uses and possibilities, you may have guessed what my plan was: RetroPie. With extremely limited knowledge of the inner workings of a computer, the internet was my friend and I set about downloading the latest image of RetroPie from their website and burning it to the micro SD card provided with this purchase. The raspberry emblazoned SD converter slot thingy works nicely and the whole process was relatively simple with step by step guides available online. I then set about backing up not only my SNES collection, but my original PlayStation collection too! I plugged my PS4 controller in and off I went. Works beautifully and I've recently dipped my toe into Linux Lake to attempt minor customisations and hopefully learn something while I'm at it.I am extremely happy with my purchase and if, like me, you're thinking of compiling all your old games into one miniature little box, then this is for you. I can't speak much for other uses of the Raspberry Pi 3, but I've read great things! Oh! I almost forgot the power lead. It works well and comes with an adaptable plug, so you can it travelling around the world if you wish. Don't forget the different slidey plug attachments though!

For anyone who hasn't heard of Raspberry Pi, I highly recommend looking up youtube and doing a quick search as the capabilities of this little peice of kit is vast!Initially I ordered this so I can have Kodi in my bedroom but after looking around the net I found you can turn this little box into a retro games console but also have Kodi at the same time!! Sold! The starter kit kind of ticked all the boxes for me as its pretty much good to go from the box for a Kodi set-up alone. Although I must add, you require an HDMI cable and probably a keyboard to do so. I never actually used the power lead as an old android phone lead did the job and it got power from my Xbox one USB port. When the kit arrived I removed NOOBS from the supplied SD card, flashed retropie to the card, uploaded a couple of roms then set-up Kodi. It's all very much straight forward where there are plenty tutorials/videos on the net to help. There is also a large community to help out as well, where I found 9 times out of 10 the question you want answered has been asked before.Once Kodi was installed, I downloaded the remote app (iPhone) and followed another guide to set it up, phone is now the Kodi remote! For retropie I had an old Xbox 360 wired controller which is picked up by the Pi once plugged in, so easy! For anyone wanting to go with the retropie setup, you will require a PC to get the SD card flashed with retropie and also to add roms (unless you buy a card pre loaded with it all and then it definitely is plug and play).I must stress that I am no IT guru and still managed to get this thing setup with very little issues. I supervised my kids (4 & 6yrs) putting the Pi together as well!!

I have always wanted a Raspberry Pi the day they first appeared on the market. I received this last week and I used it for Retropie games. It was all new to me as I have never used anything like it before but all went so smoothly.I had to install Retropie twice as the first time it didn't work and I tried and tried and tried to get it going but was struggling.I then checked my memory card and flash drive I used and the memory card was not good enough so I used a bigger and faster one and it was fine.I have now got a little gaming device and can play all the games from yesteryear with the roms from certain sites.I was over the moon to see I could play the Sega Master System games and reallybrings back memories of my kids playing them in the 80's and that is if they could get daddy off of it lol.I installed Raspbian when I first had it, Raspbian is a version of Linux built specifically for the Raspberry Pi and it is fantastic.Rather much like windows which is what I have always used but easy enough to get the hang of. I was amazed at the speed really for such a tiny thing and only 5 volts power supply. This was a good kit and I can see it is not a Chinese rip off as the power supply is not cheap and the case is so easy to snap together. Can easily be taken to bits and put together again over and over and no ill effects. I have ordered heat sinks for it but I don't think it will be necessary it was just for precaution.I fully recommend this to anyone but now back to outrun.

The Raspberry Pi 3 micro computer is a powerhouse that can run a number of different programs which include a basic circa 1980's style OS, retro pie (a retro gaming platform) and home media streamer Kodi although not all at the same time. The package comes with a Micro USB power supply with a number of different attachments to cover almost any requirements, a Micro SD card and adapter ready for installing whatever system you a wanting and a multi part case to house your brand new Raspberry Pi 3.The Pi itself has built in Wi-Fi capabilities as well as an Ethernet network port for direct connection to a router or network switch, 4x USB 2.0 ports for connecting game pads, keyboards and Mice or any number of other USB devices add in to this the HDMI port for connecting up to modern monitors and TV's . The multi core ARM processor works well and has no problems dealing with anything that I've thrown at it so far and the same can be said for the built in graphics. The case that comes with this particular package is made of read and white plastic and forms a good protective shell around the Pi even with the sides removed, a good feature of this case is the removable white plastic sections which allows for extra ventilation and heat dissipation as well as access to some of the GPIO pins (depending on that it is you are trying to attach). All in all this is a great little starter package and I would recommend it to anyone who is starting out with a Raspberry Pi project.

I bought this out of curiosity just to see what the tech would do as I heard a lot of my friends who had purchased the Pi for various projects, all successful projects I might add. once I received the kit I was impressed with the build quality and the speed of the Pi once I had installed the OS I started exploring various OS I stopped at Retropi and have decided to build a arcade machine I'm very excited as I will be looking to actually build a complete arcade machine and have all the arcade buttons and joystick kit for 2 players.once I start my project I will upload pictures of my progress.I have tried a few arcade roms with the Retro pi and these are amazing using the Xbox 360 controller and a wireless receiver which worked without any flaws.mapping the keys is easy and once done you have the ability to catalogue your collection of roms with a description and images.I'm also thinking of getting another Pi 3 for my children to make a robot this should be a good educational activity for the kids to enjoy and learn from.I have also tried the Pi as a media centre and this was exceptionally fast when playing back movies from a NAS drive I found the device did not heat up and was very reliable no freezing at all.overall I would recommend the Rasberry Pi 3 to anyone if you have that streak in you to try and build something this is the product to start with.

I bought this kit to set up RetroPie and it works flawlessly. This is the Pi 3 Model B.It comes with:*4 USB ports*WiFi*Bluetooth*16GB micro SD card with adapter*Power Supply Cable*Pi Model B Circuit board*Case for the Pi*Official Raspberry Pi logo engraved/printed on everythingYou may want to purchase:*a USB SD Card reader (if you plan on connecting the SD card to your computer if there is no SD slot)*Keyboard*HDMI cableI bought 2 of these and they are both working great. When you initially start up it has pre-loaded a NOOBS system to allow you to setup and install some linux systems. If you're wanting to set up RetroPie I would recommend NOT using the NOOBS system to install Raspbian.I would instead format the SD card and pre-load it with the RetroPie img file. On one of my Pi's I installed Raspbian and then RetroPie on top of it. I had nothing but problems and issues with controllers and config files. On the other Pi I formatted the SD card and installed the img file and everything worked great. So I reformatted the original Pi and used the RetroPie img on it and it's working perfect now as well. This is a solid kit with very durably made parts, and it looks pretty sleek as well with the nice white and pinkish red.

I'd always wanted to dabble in a bit of homebrew computing with a Raspberry Pi. Now the Model 3 is out, I figured it was time to pick up a kit that would allow me to make the ultimate retro games machine. Having spent a small fortune on old kit, having a tiny little box that you can plug a Playstation controller (or just about any other USB controller) seemed like a good idea, and the Pi 3 has plenty of bang for your buck. The starter desktop kit comes with a case (fits OK, but lid doesn't quite close 'flush' for some reason, minor annoyance but not noticeable most of the time) along with the Pi itself, and a micro SD card with OS so you can really get up and running very quickly.I chose to buy a separate SD card for mine, so that I could flash it with RetroPie (which was ludicrously easy to do once you've got an appropriate SD card prep application, available freely on the internet for most OS).The kit just works and now I'm wondering what else I can use it for. Currently investigating writing some sort of dual-mode boot for it so that I can choose between media centre roles and gaming roles. If your kids are into homebrew computing and want something really fantastic to get them started, this is definitely a win also.

Firstly, let me say that this bundle contains every piece of hardware that you need to get going with the Raspberry Pi.The Raspberry Pi is a small, fully functional computer the size of a credit card. The included MircoSD card comes pre-installed with Raspbian OS, which will have you up and running in 5 minutes. Now the difficult part....in order to install any additional software on the Raspberry Pi, you would need to start coding, which may put off some people as it did with me for a long time (even though I have an IT degree). There are plenty of tutorials online to assist you with your project, but if you run into any problems, frustration may become a reality. For me,I wanted to install Plex Media Server on the Raspberry Pi, which I was able to get running within an hour. The problem I ran into was mounting external hard drives, in particular with an external network drive, which refused to auto mount on boot.I eventually returned the item as it wouldn't do what I wanted it to do, but the product, the quality, is very good.I would recommend to anyone looking for a basic computer or someone who is looking to learn about programming languages.

Initially I was a bit disappointed as it didn't need any tinkering to make it work!I think this is the first time I have setup a device without any issues.Unwrap, board in SD in, close case, plug in input device (I used my k400) turn on and it gives you a selection of OS' to install. They install and that's it!I am used to spending a day or three trying to solve initial issues so it odd but welcome change of pace!I would say I'd skip the charger as it's just a regular micro USB and will even run off my anker portable power brick/battery/charger thing.I happened to have a micro usb cable plugged in to the my media centre which powers the Pi just fine. But it's still a great price and I doubt it would be cheaper to buy Pi+microSD+case. Now I just need to find something to do with it!You can pug and play a wired PS3 controller so had a go on some old snes games. But might get a little screen and turn it to a weather station which would be good as I'd actually use it in the morning as I just don't have enough time to play the ever increasing mountain of games I have in the backlog.

Really good product for a wide range of applications. I bought this to play around with Retropie and Kodi Media Centre. The kit comes in rather plain boxes and with limited instructions, but all that can be found on the net very easily. The case is sturdy and solidly built and hold the Pie securely, but has limited ventilation, which depending on the apps you are running can mean the pie runs hot. Under Retropie I have found it to get very hot when using emulators from the Playstation one era, but this was solved by removing one of the side covers on the case. The connections such USB, power and HDMI are all very tight and are great at holding the cables in,but if you are changing the connections regularly you could possibly damage them, they are that tight. This is why I only gave it four stars, would have given 4.5 but you can't :DKodi on the pie works really well as a media centre. I have most of my media on a NAS system and this plays everything I thrown at it without a hitch. Overall I am very happy with the product even to the point I bought two of them.

I bought one of these after reading about RetroPie. I can't believe I've waited this long to get involved with the Raspberry Pi, it's an amazing piece of kit, so much so that 3 days after purchasing the first one I bought another which I plan to use for some home automation and general messing about with. This starter kit is a great bundle. The official case may be a bit boring but it's sturdy and well made (the white is way cooler than the black, I have both)The official charger is rated 5.1V and 2.5A so you get good solid performance from the Pi.The SD card however isn't anything amazing. On both orders I received an Integral Class 10 16GB,it does the job nicely and I haven't noticed any performance problems but I'm not sure how much I trust it. If you're buying this for RetroPie or any other use whereby you expect the Pi to remain in use for long periods of time, I'd recommend creating a backup image just to be sure and grabbing a few extra cards. All in all great device, great price and this kit is the ideal way to get started.
