The new Pi is quite an exciting product to use. I had already installed and used the latest version of the operating system, Raspbian Debian Buster, on an SD card and used that on my Pi 3 Model B+, so when I switched the 4B on with that same SD card I was astonished with how fast I arrived at the desktop. Even the splash screen appeared and vanished so quickly it couldn't register in my eyes. I'd heard that SD card read speed had been improved, but this was amazing. The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is certainly more powerful, faster, and adds features that the Pi community have been asking for - true Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0 ports,Faster Ram - while retaining as much backwards compatibility as possible so that existing educational and experimental kits can still be used.Because of the increased speed, memory and connectivity the Pi 4B becomes quite an interesting little desktop computer, with a huge range of office, image-processing, video editing and music software available for download. As with previous models the Pi Foundation has found ways to cram more onto the board, which means moving some ports and support chips around, so the 3rd-party add-on market will be adapting their products - new cases, PSUs, cooling solutions etc. In particular, heatsinks for the previous models of the Raspberry Pi are not fully compatible with this edition, either not covering the full surface area, or not making proper contact because of surrounding obstructions, so I've had to order a new set with a long wait for delivery.[ Edit: I now have heatsinks for the 4 major hotspots on the board, and with these in place even a Pi-Fan can keep the 4B running at a reasonable temperature. Be advised that the official case for the 4B has no ventilation, so it runs hot at 75c even when idle unless you keep the lid off. Now back to my review. ]The retro-gaming community are excited too, and clamouring for their favourite emulation software to be adapted to work with the added memory and processing power. All this being said, the Model 4B is still being worked on and tweaked (the firmware can be updated to further refine the board's operating capabilities), so it may take a little while before your favourite thing to do with a Pi is up-and-running, but it isn't as if those things appeared overnight with the previous models.Oh, and Some Assembly Required.

After owning every previous version of the Pi, I intentionally put off buying this model as I didn't think I really needed to upgrade. But after taking the plunge, I can honestly say that it's well worth opting for a 4B if your intentions with it are as wide as what it has to offer. So the desktop experience is much the same as previous models, but you can really feel the extra processing power when it comes to using CAD type software and any other unusually intensive applications. This also leads me on to the next point, which i feel will be understood by most users.Using it as a basis for a media player or games console makes it feel as though it's fulfilling its true destiny. As a lover of video games from the 80s to the early naughties, this is the epitome of cheap but effective gaming using retropie. In my experience so far, it will easily handle anything from Atari to PS1 without breaking a sweat. Its limits so far seem to be up to and including Dreamcast, but we're talking tens of thousands of games here over the years that are fully playable. Some titles on Dreamcast need some tweaking, but anything from PS1 and under has been a joy to play.As a basis for a media player, it doesn't take an IT expert to stream perfect quality video without a hint of stuttering. If you're looking at it as your first Pi, I would recommend it 110% as it will do more than you would expect in so many ways. If your only aim is to learn Python and make some cool projects, the older models will work fine for this. But for what they cost, I'll be using the 4B unless I absolutely need something like a Zero just from a form factor perspective. To easily handle so so many different uses and to teach kids of all ages to do something more creative than play games on their phones, it really can't be beaten. I only wish that these were available when I was a kid! Perfect for long summers when the weather is a wash out and teach them something that could quite easily lead to a very good career in a number of fields! As an electrical engineer myself, I can't think of anything I've ever bought for so little that has provided so many hours, weeks and years of entertainment. Hats off to you Raspberry Pi Foundation!

Be aware that you may not get the latest (2020) version. If the description states 2019 or doesn't mention 2020 or doesn't show the 2020 version in pictures, then assume that what is being sold is the original version. The original (2019) version had a minor problem when using certain non-Pi4 PSUs and the potential damage to a transistor (switch) if the SD card was not inserted properly (missed the SD slot). The newer version that was released in February 2020 solved these problems. The 2020 version looks exactly the same with the same markings on the board except that the HDMI sockets normally have an orange top. On the reverse, the transistor has been moved from the side of the SD socket to behind it.Other than that, the Pi4 I received works fine (I have it set up as a standalone Kodi box using LebreElec). This is my first experience of the Raspberry Pi world and I'm greatly impressed! The Pi is a very versatile 'dumb' computer. It has no Operating System that is stored internally. Instead the OS (RaspianOS) image is loaded onto the SD card and the Pi boots up and runs from there. One consequence of this is that it's easy for program makers to create an image tailored for a specific use if required. Just load the image onto an SD card, pop it in and you can have a standalone box. LibreELEC is an example of this. Inserting a LibreELEC loaded SD card will give you a standalone box that instantly opens into Kodi when switched on and all you need is to connect the box to an HDMI TV / monitor for instant Kodi use. In fact, the Pi 4B works well with Kodi as the Pi has a 4K HD output an audio by-pass which allows it to be connected via the HDMI cable to a suitable amplifier to get full surround sound. This is way better than those TX type boxes that run on Android and rarely seem to work properly.I have since bought a couple more Pi 4s, but from the original Pi dealer sites to ensure I get the 2020 version.

Purchased a pair of Pi 4s to run a domestic network service set (mainly DNS and DHCP, taking over from my router). using the Pi 4 and a copy of PiHole (caching DNS / sink) it is possible to block advertising from your entire home network (including PC, TV, tablets, smartphones, etc. Fabulously easy to set up for the task.Positives1. Remarkably powerful computer-on a board for a competitive price2. Compact and unobtrusive (different layout means you will need a Pi4-specific case, but plenty available)3. Addition of Gigabit Ethernet makes a huge difference in network performance4. Two USB-3 ports means super-fast storage easily added with connected SSD5. Vast library of projects, software, robotics and addons remain compatible and fun to experiment with5. Dual 4K monitor capability via pair of microHDMI ports brings serious Home Theatre potentialNegatives1. Runs much hotter than earlier models and will throttle when it gets warm. No cooling provided - it really needed to have shipped with (optional) heatsinks2. Prices starting to creep up for more powerful models - by the time you add micro-SD, case, etc, it can get expensiveSum-UpThe Pi remains one of the most popular hobbyist, single-board computers for a good reason. Powerful, flexible, reasonably easy to set up and use and with lots of available support, are lots of fun, too. You do need good cooling with this one, though.

This raspberry Pi is brilliant but do you really need it?If I was buying a Pi to use as a desktop computer this is the one I'd get, but I don't to use it as a desktop and so far all the projects I've used it for run just as well on much lower powered PI's at about a third the price. There is still an upside in my mind to this powerful device even though I don't need it as a desktop PC. Where it shines is that because the graphical interface works so much faster and even work on the command line gets fast results its great to use to create projects that can then be transferred with a quick swap of the micro SD card to a less well speced and cheaper Pi.Now if the price drops and it would need todrop a lot then I'll start buying more to use with other projects but currently there is nothing I actually need the power for. However this is still a brilliant board to start Raspberry Pi projects because its easy to plug in a standard keyboard and mouse while still having room for USB keys and hard drives. The 5GHz wireless and Ethernet port are other bonuses and if you get started with NOOBS you can be up and running with a full graphical interface in a couple of minutes.

The 4B version of the Raspberry Pi is an excellent improvement because of the much improved processor and the improved bus speed with genuine USB 3 sockets and genuine 1Gbit network socket. There are plenty of Linux distribution images ready for it and a few genuine 64 bit ones such as Ubuntu. A true linux geek would be happy to use this as an everyday workstation with a decent high resolution screen providing a desktop environment ( KDE is the one I would recommend). Meanwhile it retains the general purpose input output interface which makes it so attractive as a control device for robotics and other functions.Increased power supply wattage allows the USB 3 sockets to supply power to devices which do not have external power supplies so very large capacity storage devices are now also fast enough to make 1 Tbyte or more of external storage practical. The use of an SD card as a boot device and system root is probably an anomaly and I suspect (hope?) that firmware updates will soon allow direct booting from USB 3 devices. For the time being it is possible to transfer most of the functionality away from the SD card if you have the expertise.Read full review...

Retro Gaming has arrived!!! Get that RetroPie and have yourselve a slice of the good life. This baby is awesome! So clean cut, and efficient. Look into a nice fan-equipped case and you can overclock this bad boy very, very safely and quite easily. Instructions on over - clocking can be found in the official Raspberry Pi MagPie magazine! I've emulated the SNES (very amazingly, I may add!) , the Dreamcast, and even the PS1 thus far! An absolute must have Retro gaming solution! Pays for itself almost immediately. Super tip: Hit the forums for advice on how to handle emulation 'issues.' Everything can be worked out! Even that glitch in Sheep Raider for the PS1, hahaha. Reddit can be your friend!Take it slow, be patient, and remember, nothing good comes with ease. There will be lots of trial and error in getting the emulation systems working top-notch, but be patient! I'm optimistic as to the durability! Time will tell. I'll make sure to update if it breaks my heart. Happy gaming! May there be peace all throughout the world.

This is my first RPi and I am very happy with it. Although a few weeks after this purchase they released the 8gb version, I would have still bought this because I don't think RAM is an issue for most use cases. This mini-computer can run browser sessions with multiple tabs open and videos very well. I am running Ubuntu 20.04 server which doesn't have the 3D-hardware acceleration which makes video playback less smooth and uses more CPU than needed. This however isn't a problem with Raspberr Pi OS. This device runs hot! however with my passive metal heatsink case, the temperatures are kept ~45-57degC most of the time and quiet. This device draws a lot of current for its size hence the heat.I haven't tried 4k video playback but 1080p 60fps is not smooth (probably due to the 3D-acceleration issue eventhough I did try it on RPi OS and the issue was still there), you can try this at Twitch. Overall I think this is a good device for a quiet home entertainment system come room heater :D.

I've purchased new Rpi4 after Odroid-C2 and Rpi3 to try using it as a general desktop PC.I've installed Raspbian with Mate desktop, and I am very impressed. New Rpi4 CPU is about twice as fast as Rpi3, and with more RAM and USB3 storage it feels lot more responsive. It can be used to learn programming and lots of different applications, playing videos or Kodi media server - everything I've tried worked well, and support via community is excellent !I've also tried installing Manjaro Linux for 64 bit experience, and it works well.Don't expect that it will match the speed of a modern laptop or desktop PC, but thats not what Rpi4 is designed for,and considering the price it represents excellent value for money.Note that in a few minutes of use it becomes very hot, so it does need a cooling - I bought passive metal casing which is noise-free and seems to be sufficient.Read full review...

Excellent single-board computer. I have used it for both work and play. The new Raspberry Pi 4 just keeps better with better hardware and software. The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is, physically, almost identical to Pi 3 Model B+, but the hardware has been updated in several ways, such as a more powerful CPU, and more RAM (if needed). As the chips can become very hot, heatsinks or/and fans are needed to keep your Raspberry Pi going and to get better performance as highlighted in recent studies. What I like with Raspberry Pi is the community, it has strong community support, so if you having issues you'll more likely to find the answers from the Internet. You don't need to re-inventing the wheel. The new Raspberry PI OS is also a nice upgrade from the old Raspbian OS. The Raspberry Pi can be a fun device for both adults and children.

- Previous versions of the Raspberry Pi were limited by their power supplies and the relatively small amount of memory available. This one, especially with 4 GB, is much closer to a laptop or desktop computer.- This newer model power supplies come with a USB-C connector to deliver more power, and the video outputs use micro-HDMI connectors. Better to use a high-quality micro-HDMI to HDMI cable.- This 4B model is still limited to four USB ports, but two of those are now USB 3.0 ports. To conserve ports - Bluetooth keyboard / Mouse can be used.- Ability to output 4K video at 60 Hz- Dual-monitor support- To Sum-up the Raspberry Pi 4B is an amazing value which is a viable alternative to laptop or desktop machines for home or office computing.- Highly recommend bundling this with a case, wireless keyboard/mouse.

I actually do use this as a desktop computer. I watch youtube, netflix, hulu and Disney plus. And I edit photos. These features do not work out of the box. Youtube does once you get your operating system of choice installed.Any word document software's and media players will need to be installed. If your a tinkering type of person and looking for a hobby board to set up the way you'd like. This is a great device. If your plans are to stream like me. I highly recommend a cooling solution because the pi4 runs very hot.If your new to this type board. The Raspberry pi forums are extremely helpful. My raspberry pi 4 out performs my older HP15 laptop with Ubuntu linux on it.As far as speed, usb transfer speed and the basic opening and closing of files. With the Raspian operating system on the pi 4.

I took the plunge and bought my first Raspberry Pi, which I intended to use as a DNS server using Pi Hole. This model has an upgraded processor and 4GB. This was probably overkill for a fairly basic DNS server. It is easily connected thanks to USB-C power, two micro-HDMI, two USB 2, two USB 3 and gigabit ethernet. It also has wi-fi and Bluetooth built in.After setting it up as my DNS server, I decided to push it a bit further by hooking it up to my TV and installing Plex and Kodi.I can happily stream 4K videos online while running my DNS server in the background without any trouble whatsoever. I don't doubt I could push it even further if I wanted to!All in all, this is a very impressive bit of kit.It delivers a lot of power for such a small price tag and tiny physical size.

I'm using this pi to run Pi-hole, and to also act as a server for realtime weather station data. The computer itself is an amusing, pleasing, cute little thing that has performance approximating a good phone from 4-5 years ago. That is remarkable given its rock-bottom price, reliability and capabilities.A good friend of mine has a 3D printer, and fabbed up a nice little case for it. It stays cool enough without a fan, though I did buy a heatsink set for it, and that helped with what I felt was a bit of excessive CPU and bridge temperature. I have had zero failures, though I'm not super-impressed with Debian, something I was happy to get away from (Ubuntu, its better-known scion). The OS runs fine but took some fiddling. I put xfce on it and that makes it bearable.

I had a 3b+ that I used as a PiHole DNS server and the the host for my 12TB external drive for use as a NAS. I was running a clean install of Buster on that unit.Couldn't have been an easier transition. Swapped MicroSD cards and was done. No update, nothing. My router even kept the same static IP for it.This one is so much faster! My complaint was how long file transfers were taking. That USB2.0 on the 3b+ not only hindered my harddrive performance, but also my network performance. Just did a file test and was transferring at 880Mbps; I was only hitting in the upper 100's with my 3b+.I run this headless so I can't really say much about anything else. I even notice the PiHole dashboard is more responsive.Great upgrade!
