Opulence comes to mind when you first open the box and look at the pen. The presentation box is nice and everything is simple and neat. It has a warranty booklet, and it is a limited warranty of 2 years. However, the pen feels robust and looks lavish. The pen itself is lovely to behold. I guess the weight comes from the 18-carat gold parts on the pen. It has this very nice balance, I have a very old Parker gold pen; that had some weight to it, but this surpasses it.The nice thing about this pen is that it writes just like any other ballpoint pen, as the internal refill is a quinkflow. The Duofold weighs 29 grams, so it is a weighty pen. But it is well balanced and feels solid and robust. My first use with the pen was comfortable and flowed very well. It is a nice pen and you can write and use with ease. So, the pen itself is lovely. As what the pen information states it is a work of craftsmanship. You can tell by the look of the pen that it is hand built and put together meticulously. From the turning of the top to retract the ink nib to the weight and removing of the nib. They have put emphasis on the ease of use and change of cartridge. They probably have someone poor soul checking these pens to ensure they exacting to the specification they must adhere to. I know most put would shun and show a blind eye to a pen at this price range. I believe this pen is aimed at the higher market, so, it is not everyone's cup of tea. Most of us now live in a digital age and I tend to use a tablet or laptop. I only use a pen on the odd occasions and mainly to sign documents. So, in a digital age a pen like this is pointless. However, for special occasions this is ideal, however you wouldn't want to keep this pen on a wedding guest book as I doubt the first person who signs it would leave this pen behind :)However, I guess you can keep the pen in your suit pocket for signing documents and writing your will. It's a tricky line to step. It is expensive for a pen and then again you wont leave this lying around and let your son take it school. It is a pen for special occasions only. So, it will have limited day-to-day use. At this price you would only use this on occasions where you deem it useful, most of the time the pen will stay in it's presentation box.

A handsome ballpoint pen from Parker (a division of Newell Rubbermaid, the US consumer products group) that complements their original 1921 Duofold fountain pen, which is still in production. It has a quality look with a casing made from resin (their website says Precious resin) that allows for the Duofold name and logo to be precisely laser cut into it.Twist the metal top half a turn and it softly locks into place with the ballpoint appearing. How does it write -- perfectly, especially on thick paper and it's also flexible enough for drawing. Unfortunately there is no reference to how much can be written with one cartridge. The pen, of course, comes in a luxury box.Pull open the top two flaps to reveal a black card with a top of the pen logo printed in varnish and some copy about Duofold pens in gold ink. Remove this to find the pen and a very slim forty-eight page instruction/warrantee book in multiple languages. I found this the weakest part of the overall package because it's set in ridiculously small type (for those who know about this sort of thing I think it's 3.5 point) and probably unreadable except in daylight. If you are called Parker you'll have a neat looking fabric covered box with your name in gold on the top to leave in a conspicuous place in your office or home. This is an expensive ballpoint (the fountain pen more so) but its obvious quality means, with several refills, it should last for years. I expect it sells more as a corporate gift rather than an individual buy.

So, what do you do with a £385 pen?You touch it - it's got a nice weight, and fits well in the hand; the twist of the top reveals the nib with a satisfying but gentle click. The metal outer casing has a nice, ribbed feel. You look at it - it comes in an impressive presentation box that's fun to open (this pen has 'I don't really know you but wanted to get you something nice as a retirement gift' written all over it) but not a practical carrying case so you don't damage the exterior. It definitely looks the business - an impressive pen to sign important docs with a flourish (if that's your thing), or leave casually at your desk so people can admire it from afar. You replace the cartridge at 1% of the price.Yes, this £385 pen has an ink cartridge you can replace for under four quid on amazon. So is this pen a sheep in wolf's clothing? Depends how you think about it. If this is a gift - it's spot on. If for you, a pen's all about the feel in the hand, then again, this is a good buy. But if you want to splash out on a lovely pen to write that first novel, or sign those divorce papers, and want to feel a real connection to the paper, then bear in mind that you'll words will be in the same ink as the majority of Parker's ballpoints, and you could save yourself a bundle of cash by picking something further down Parker's pecking order. The irony of typing a review for a pen hits home here.

Parker has long had a reputation for quality, precision and reliability, and when it comes to writing implements this Duofold ballpoint pen is truly top of its class. Design, quality and useability are everything and this pen ticks all the boxes for me. I didn't know quite what to expect from such an expensive ballpoint pen, but my expectations were high and I have not been disappointed. Although a little on the weighty side, it is perfectly balanced and a pleasure to hold and use. It sits comfortably in the hand and writes smoothly and effortlessly gliding over the page. The design on the barrel is the trademark chevron in black and gold, and at the price this pen would make an excellent presentation piece or special occasion gift.I feel the design is more likely to appear to men, but that's just my personal opinion. However, at the end of the day despite its many merits, this is after all just a ballpoint pen! I had hoped for such an expensive item it would have been made in the UK, but was disappointed to find on unscrewing it - the word France, which in no way detracts from the quality by the way. If anyone is interested as to what 'ruthenium' is, it is a rare transition metal belonging to the platinium group of metals which was discovered in 1844.

I'm conflicted with this pen. It's undoubtedly a high quality product as this is evident from the moment you open it - it comes in a well packaged box and when you open the top flap to reveal a black card with a logo printed in varnish and gold printed text in gold ink.Underneath this is the pen and a small (almost 50 page) manual. For a pen. To be fair, it also does mention the warranty too.Getting the pen out and it feels amazing - the balance is perfect and it's well presented with a lovely finish and a deep engraving that adds a great finishing touch. In use, it's brilliant and flows freely and is comfortable to use for long periods. So why conflicted?Simply down to the price - I tend use cheap pens that cost a fraction of the price and work almost as well. They are not flashy or special but they do what they are designed too. This pen is something special and while it is absolutely ideal for a special or commemorative gift, it's hard to recommend for daily use - unless money is no object. It's highly recommended for a pen as it's one of the best out there, but looses a star simply for the cost.

This classic black Parker pen is one which continues Parker's proud tradition of producing top quality pens to suit all. This particular pen is extremely well presented (and for the price you would expect it to be!). It comes in a presentation box and also includes an authenticity certificate. As for the pen itself, it's quite plain and lacks the ornate designs of some of Parker's finer offerings. That said this classic design will appeal to a certain marker I'm sure. The solid gold nib is what really raises the price here, it's difficult to tell that it's solid gold without being told that it is.It does however write beautifully and given that is the main function of a pen you can't really ask for much more in that sense.Clearly this isn't the "take to work" type of pen but would make a perfect gift for an extra special occasion and in that sense I highly recommend this pen!

First of all the pen comes in an elegant box with the Queens and Prince of Wales warrant on the side. Once you open it the pen is displayed with a description of Parkers history and the quality of the Dunfold pen. The pen is beautiful and has a perfect weight to it, you can tell that it has been crafted with class and style. The action to reveal the nib is smooth by turning the top of the pen. The nib its self is 18 carat solid gold and has a beautiful writing quality. It is so nice to write with. I found I enjoyed write cards and letters with it. This pen is all about quality and it feels like it.

The best ballpoint pen I have ever written with. Perfectly balanced, beautifully finished with 18-carat solid gold nib. Expensively packaged. It is certainly aimed at the never to be used gift market. This is its beauty, great present for that person your want to reward, you know its expensive upon receipt and of course we all know that it is overpriced in terms of its functionality, but that's not the point, as a gift it is worth the price.

Vintage design and colour combined with todays materials and manufacturing standards. Very fine pen! The Amazon price (a little below UKP 100) was unparallelled.

A pen with a smooth writing feel. I have purchased this 65% off price in Japan.I got it! Thanks amazon.co.uk.

A quality of manufacture which gives a great comfort of writing. A bit heavy for a "Ruthenium" finish.
