The Panasonic Freeview Play recorder is a compact set which has a glossy black design which would suit any room. It doesn't draw the eye towards it and it doesn't have a distracting blue light when it is turned on. The instructions are clear and setting it up was simple with the supplied HDMI cable. With the recorder connected to wifi, Freeview Play catch up can be used; using the video menu on the remote you can select a channel and browse through the past 7 days of television from a variety of channel networks. This has given us the opportunity to watch series which we haven't been able to watch before, unless we watched it on a laptop and connected it to the TV to enjoy it in comfort on a larger screen. Before we connected the recorder we had to put up with the TV sets own Freeview display menu which didn't even update most of time and simply looked blank so we couldn't find out what was on at all, let alone find out what wad on later, so we relied on checking online TV listings. All in the past now. Up to two programmes can be selected for recording at the same time which is very handy; can save a few arguments! The recorder remote can stop, pause, pause live TV and Play, skip chapters, forward and rewind live TV. Perfect when entertaining children and ensuring you don't miss a programme which may clash with another event as you can set the recorder on timer. I'm often unable to watch certain baking and cookery programmes during the day or at busy weekends. So the record function has been really beneficial and allows me to have an evening of catching up on my favourite programmes, one after the other if I wish. Programmes can be recorded as a single show, or as a series. This has been handy to record children's TV episodes from a channel targeting older kids, so my children can watch selected programmes. There is also a manual skip function, to rewind 10 seconds or skip forward 60 seconds. I use this function if I have just lost my attention in a programme due to using my iPad, or answering the door, especially if I have forgotten to simply press pause on recorded programmes. Use the USB port to link up other media, such as a camera to view photos on the larger TV screen, or even a video. I take lots of home videos, so it delights my young children to see "their own show" on the screen. It is a breeze to have a glance through the channels, see what is on later, or what was on yesterday whilst not completely dropping out of a programme as you will still see it in the top right hand corner of the TV Guide menu screen. I am rather impressed by how it has transformed our TV viewing experience for the entire family.

We were sent one of these boxes for the purpose of reviewing it, and have been enjoying the wide range of features available. Freeview Play is a great concept as there are no monthly charges, yet you have the flexibility of recording tv, pausing & rewinding live tv, and watching a large amount of content from the past 7 days right from the tv guide. You can browse everything on BBC iPlayer, ITV on demand and All 4 too, and you get access to around a dozen HD channels as long as your TV supports it. The box was really to easy to set up, you just hook it up to your TV via HDMI, plug in the power cable, and hook up the arial cables - one in from your antennae and one out to your TV.It walks you through setup step by step which is easy to follow. We've found the software on the box to be a little clunky but I think this is just a case of getting used to it, it isn't the easiest user interface in the world for a lot of the functions, but saying that it seems to work well and it has loads of features that we have found missing from our previous PVR box. This includes being able to specify start & end times for recordings, being able to watch DLNA content from our network (and it respects our playlist order too which our TV does not), and the ability to watch recordings from the box on my iPad over the network is great too. The remote has dedicated Freeview Play and Netflix buttons, which are really handy to jump directly to all your on demand content. One negative for the box is that a lot of functions are restricted if you are currently recording onto the HDD. This includes the basic settings page and also watching content over your network, which is a bit irritating. I'm not sure why this restriction is in place; perhaps it is down to the processing power of the box. Overall though, we have been impressed by the box. The tv guide itself is easy to use, it looks really smart on our shelf, and the quality of the recordings and the functionality of the box is fantastic.

The Panasonic HDD Recorder with Freeview Play is a compact unit in a sleek black design. It arrived ready to be installed with an HDMI cable supplied and even supplied batteries to go in the remote control. All I had to do was follow the very easy instructions to connect the HDMI cable to the unit and my television, run the ariel cable through the unit and we were ready to go. Once the unit was turned on it took a few minutes to set up the channels, which it does automatically, and it was then picture ready. The first great thing about this recorder is that we can record up to two programmes at the same time - we often find that the things we want to watch clash with each other so this is great. We can also pause and rewind live tv. The other great thing is that by connecting to our wifi network we can also make use of Freeview Play which is Freeview's catch up service. We can watch shows and programmes that have already been aired in the last 7 days even if we hadn't set them to record, and there is such a vast selection of channels on Freeview that we can always find something good to watch. It also has the capabilities to connect to our Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts, and although we haven't tried that yet it means that this little box has sorted all of our entertainment needs by turning our TV into a smart TV. It was easy to install, easy to set up, easy to browse the tv guide, easy to record and easy to use Freeview Play. We are thrilled with our HDD recorder and can't ever imagine not having it!

1. I receive most of my television programmes from the Winter Hill transmitter. Therefore the region for BBC1 and BBC2 is North West and they appear as channels 1 and 2 respectively. However. I can also receive BBC1 Wales and BBC2 Wales which appear as channels 800 and 801 respectively but the signal is not as strong and sometimes I cannot receive them at all. I therefore always set programmes to record from the North West but sometimes, for Series Timer Recording, the first episode is recorded on BBC North West and subsequent episodes are then set to record on BBC Wales. This would be a problem if the signal is not strong enough when the programme is due to record. 2.After a Series Timer Recording has been recorded and the following episode is more than a week later, it appears at the end of the Timer Recording list with "No Data" in the Schedule. I would have thought that, after waiting until the recording date falls within a week, the recorder would automatically set it to the correct date and time and then record it in due course. 3. When trying to record PBS America on channel 91 there are several peculiarities regarding which program is set to record. Perhaps the "fault" is with the channel. 4. Sometimes the POWER LED/Remote control signal indicator flashes continuously and the only way I have been able to stop it is by switching the recorder off and back again at the mains. 5. I cannot make sense of the figures displayed for the time remaining.

I have the previous model to this one, the DMR-HWT230EB but with a 1Tb hard drive which has given me excellent service but I decided to buy the latest model, albeit with a 500 Gb hard drive and to relegate the older model to my bedroom to replace a disastrous Sagemcom PVR. The Sagecom hardly ever displayed a full program guide with huge chunks of the guide missing, a common fault so I believe. A bad purchase. It was also extremely difficult to update. The latest model has Freeview Play which is a boon to have. I also like the updated menu systems. There is nothing wrong with the previous model but the new menu's look nicer. It came preinstalled with the latest software updates. There is one aspect of the new one which shows slight cost cutting. On my original model the front display shows the name of the program that you are watching. Panasonic have omitted this on the latest model and just show a tiny green light to show the unit is on plus two tiny red lights when recording. A retrograde step in my opinion.I also like the fact that on both models the software updates are carried out automatically at 3AM although this can be amended if required. I purchased the new model direct from Panasonic as a refurbished unit with a one year warranty for £99.99 some £83 approx. cheaper than a brand new unit. Although it is a refurbished unit it looks brand new. I could not be happier with it and can thoroughly recommend it.Read full review...

I wanted to give five stars the only thing is that it's slightly complicated at first,Only compared to the previous freeview recorder,,Which was a more expensive Sony,I didn't read instructions,Sort of worked it out as I went along (as usual),I actually ordered the box for my mum and I had to show her round the box which was a bit difficult at times,She is now quite pleased with it,The boxes we had in the past had a better TV guide and was very pleased with the media player,Plays both mp4 and mkv files and you can transfer files and store to the box,The box has a very sharp picture compared to olderBoxes we owned,One thing I'm not too keen on is that if you copy from USB card files to box it stores them somewhere else rather than with your tv recordings which is fine for me but, wasn't so easy to explain to mum,The box as a bit more going on than were used to but all in all would recommend it as a media player and freeview recorder but haven't used it with WiFi,And I did fined it a bit awkward to cancel a recording it's not that straight forward,Hope I have helped and I wouldn't want to put anyone off from buying one at all,It's the best box we have had and I would buy one for my self but maybe a 1TB version,As value that depends on how long it lasts before mum needs a new one,The last box lasted 3 maybe 4 years that's not long enough,Expect longer with a bit of luck,OK.....Read full review...

This is a great recorder with easy navigation and a clean friendly menu system. I would highly recommend this as I now have 2.There are a few things to be aware of if you are looking to use some of the additions which come with the recorder. If you are planning to use an external usb HDD to copy your TV recordings onto so you do not use up all of the player’s disc space, you have to register with your player. This wipes all data from the usb HDD and it will only work on this player. If you want to use it on another player, you have to register it to that one and again it wipes the usb HDD clean and is now only usable on that one.Should you want to use the usb HDD as an additional backup drive for your computer, unfortunately, it will not work and is now only fit for using with the Panasonic recorder as your computer does not see the usb HDD any longer (even if it is cleared and formatted). If you have a usb HDD with recordings on (such as backup films and TV episodes) it can be plugged into the device and you can watch those on your TV. This does not require any registering etc. However, the player does not appear to play older versions of AVI’s. Some backed dvd’s from over 10 years ago will not play. With the addition of Freeview, Amazon Prime, Netflix and Yuotube this is a good purchase.

On first glances the HDD box looks great and would fit in well with any modern room setup. I like that everything you needed for set up is in the box ready to go (including a HDMI cable and batteries for the remote control). Installing the HHD box is easy - there are easy to follow prompts on the screen throughout the set up process. Connecting to the Internet is also easier than I expected and I think it's great that you can look back through the last 7 days of programmes and watch any that you may have missed. Because the box has twin tuners you can watch one channel whilst recording another one - perfect for families like ours when we all like different programmes or are out when our favourites are on.It is easy to record a programme and you can set the box to record a whole series so you can be sure you won't miss any episodes. With a huge 500GB storage there is plenty of room for recordings. I would highly recommend the box to anyone, even my dad who has little experience with technology found the box easy to use and navigate. He could find the channels and programmes he likes, pause, play, fast forward and record something without help.

I found this to be a very smart lightweight box with a very stylish remote which I was pleasantly surprised by, the remote is slimline and sits comfortably in your hand. As with the remote the box itself is also smart looking in the black gloss effect, the only issue I found when setting up was the relatively short HDMI lead, this isn't an issue in itself if situated next to the TV. Once plugged in, it's easy to set up, I found that I did need to follow the instructions provided as I went along, but I believe everyone should do that any way to get the best out of any equipment. The instructions also hold the (very short) TV codes to programme into the remote so you can control the TV as well as the Panasonic from one remote. For me, it's a cheaper way to turn my TV into a smart TV without buying a new one. I love that I have my Netflix and Amazon Prime connected now, we can surf youtube and connect to social media if we so wish but at this stage, I've chosen not to. Finally, what are added benefits with this box is that I can record 2 programmes at once whilst watching a different channel and I can pause live TV - always a bonus.

Got this as a Christmas Present to replace my ageing and increasingly unreliable Humax. Easy to set up and, once you have mastered the instructions, easy to tune and set recordings up. The VIERA connectivity also meant that it instantly connected up with my Panasonic TV, Blu-Ray player and sound bar. Really excellent picture and sound marred at the start by the occasional jump from 16:9 picture to 4:3 during playback - hopefully all settings now correct. If not Panasonic will be hearing from me ! Easily connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable and HomePlug. I have also still to try to connect other media to it (via USB etc). The remote control button placing could have been thought out a little better as well.I have not worked out the Chapter thing yet, but the main Bad Thing about it is that it does not have a proper variable speed fast forward or rewind (like the Sky or Humax boxes). This for me is a real shame and a colossal oversight that ought to be put right in future boxes. For this, only 4 stars. But ultimately the main thing I guess is the outstanding recording quality pictures and sound. Terrific.

This box has finally enabled me to get rid of the Virgin Box & being tied to their monthly line rental, and is better in many respects but not all.Things I like:Very extensive catch up TV, a TV recorder and streaming media player all in 1 box.Decent set of HD channels with excellent HD qualityRemote controls my LG telly, meaning only 1 remote needed for everythingBuilt in wi-fi works wellQuicker operation than Virgin box (still a bit clunky in places)4K playback (when I eventually switch to 4K)And the not so good:Freeview SD quality is poor - especially compared to Virgin boxthis is not Panasonic's fault - it's Freeview terrestrial who have crammed in over 80 channels across a tiny bandwidth(apparently FreeSat is better at SD than Freeview terrestrial)Fortunately having a decent set of HD channels means I don't have so much need for the SD channels.Overall though I think it's worth keeping over Virgin - its got more features, is better in many respects & no more tie in to silly monthly line rental charges...

Needed a new PVR after my Humax became just too unreliable. It missed some timed recordings and the soundtrack broke up on some others so something new was needed. Got this to go with excellent Panasonic Smart TV, Blu-Ray DVD player and Sound Bar as really pleased with those. This appears to have everything I need plus Freeview Play. Not sure exactly how often I'll need this but it's there when I want it. Just getting used to the player now - truly excellent picture and sound quality and relatively easy to programme once you get used to it. The VIERA link also means all my equipment mow ties in together. One of two slight glitches: I recorded a film and the picture kept slipping out of 16:9 format into 4:3 - I hope this is only a one-off as the settings look OK.Panasonic may be hearing from me otherwise. And the recorded program starts to play if you select it to look at the content - a minor irritation but this should have been thought through and a program should only start if you select Play or OK etc. So far, so good.

The main reason for purchasing this was to record programmes to watch back at later time. It has been excellent for this purpose. You can set it up to record single programmes or whole series and it does this brilliantly and without any hassle at all. If the broadcast time of the programme changes it adjusts it's timing accordingly. It can also record 2 programmes at the same time which has often proved handy. Another useful feature is that when watching back a programme containing adverts one or two clicks on the "skip to next chapter" button takes you straight to the next part of the programme (it's amazing how much time this can save). We now record almost everything we want to watch on this and then watch it back later when convenient.I have used it on occasion for catch up TV on Freeview Play and iPlayer and it has worked well for this also. I wouldn't want to be without this machine now as it has made catching all programmes we want to watch simple - whatever ungodly or inconvenient hour they might be on.

I'm so impressed by this recorder - I'm not a very techy person, but I found it really easy to set up. It comes with an HDMI cable so I didn't have to get hold of one separately, and it's even supplied with batteries for the remote! The box is very slim and neat, and it took me just a few minutes to hook it up to my TV. The instruction booklet is really comprehensive but also very easy to understand, and I had the TV channels up and running in next to no time. I was expecting to find it more complicated to get the WIFI set up on it, but even that only took me a few minutes. I love how easy it is to record programmes, and it's so handy to be able to pause and rewind live TV.I'm also looking forward to being able to watch my favourite Netflix shows on it. There are a few other little tricks that I'm looking forward to using, like ability to hook a camera up to the box and display photos on your TV. Great little box, I'd definitely recommend it!

I very much like the ease of use of the 'smart' features, which give easy access to Amazon film and Netflix. Catchup TV is simplicity itself to use, as is recording and pausing live TV. There are a some features I miss: There is no mute button on the remote, you have to lower the volume manually. There are two different up and down arrow controls which both seem to do the same thing, move between channels, on the tv and in the guide, however, there is no 'page up/down' button in the guide, so to move from one page to the next you have to press either of the two arrow keys 10 or 15 times In the guide you can't 'bagsy', in other words choose a programme starting in an hour, and have the player switch automatically or remind you. It would also be handy to have an option to increase the font size in the guide, from an accessibility standpoint, I would say that's a serious omission. Overall, however, I'm very happy with my purchase.
