This evening I had the very great pleasure of refereeing my two little relatives (aged 8 and 5) as they tackled this jigsaw 'as a team'. They've had it for about a year now. I know that for a fact, because it was me that bought it for them. I also know that the combination of a four year old who was then only just starting out in the world of jigsaws, plus a seven year old who was intent on sticking every piece in before her sister even knew what day it was proved a somewhat combustible combination. I knew that the eldest puzzler had been very happily doing this on her own over this past year but the two girls had not, so far as I was aware, attemped it together since 'That Time Last Year'; And 'That Time Last Year'was not pretty, really it wasn't.This is a really nice jigsaw, very bright in colour and with an extremely dynamic design. It may have left the factory with delusions of being a 'shaped floor puzzle', but around here it takes its chances on a table-top like every other jigsaw. We're talking about a finished article that measures 42 cm by 51.5 cm, so why it should ever have been putting on any of these 'floor puzzle' airs and graces I'm not quite sure. The individual pieces are large and very sturdy and the curved aspect to the edge pieces gives this puzzle an extra element of the mysterious. The bits don't all fit together perfectly, in that they don't all match up to their neighbours the way most jigsaw pieces would do, but that simply makes for a greater test.I was intrigued by the advice on the back of the box, which very enthusiastically suggests ways in which an adult may share the thrill of generally being in the same room as this jigsaw with the child or children concerned. This equates to a game of 'Twenty Questions', which is apparently intended to develop a youngster's observational skills. Actually, when I read through all the questions I was a little worried that my two young friends might get the impression they were actually in the middle of a severe interrogation. One minute they're trying to find the missing bit of some pirate's pink feather duster and the next they're getting the full Herr Flick treatment. Fortunately, my two associates completely blanked me after only the first couple of questions when it became apparent that the answers were glaringly obvious and that I was just making myself look foolish.Having been prepared for any number of tantrums, arguments and monumental sulks as the two girls joined forces to defeat this puzzle, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they really were able to work as a team. The five year old was very much the star of the show though, being handed the pieces one by one by her sister. It was quite fascinating to witness this dynamic, as well as being a source of great relief to me that I didn't have to get involved and make the pair of them walk the nearest plank.

I bought this about thirty months ago for our first daughterwhen she was three and a half. My second daughter has justdiscovered the puzzle and I realised I hadn't reviewed it, soI thought I'd do it now.It is a great puzzle; both my daughters have a fascination withpirates and this was / is just the job. There is so much goingon, both on and around the ship, that each time it comes out ofits box there's always something to talk and laugh about. The age guide (I think) is pretty meaningless; my first daughtercould do this with a little bit of help at 3 1/2; my second daughterneeds more help, but still really enjoys the puzzle. The print quality is great, the quality and thickness of the cardhas stood the test of time (with a bit of "don't force it" etc. fromme) and I particularly like the wavy outline of the puzzle, 1: becauseit goes with the nautical theme, and 2: because the children can'tjust zoom in on the flat edges and get the frame in first (which iswhat we usually do!).So; if you've a 3+ year old who likes puzzles and pirates, do give thisyour consideration.

I bought this puzzle as a Christmas gift for a nearly 5 year old boy who loves pirates! He was thrilled with it, and did it straight away with a bit of help from his mum. Second time he did it on his own and he was patient for 45 minutes while doing it! Pieces are very good, nicely shaped, not to small, not too big, colors are bright and beautiful and picture is so full of details, you can talk about it a lot when finished. I would recommend it to everyone! Excellent puzzle for an excellent price!

This is a bit fiddly to make and it was a bit too easy to do damage during the actual making process. Can't complain though as it is a good price for what it is (an afternoons entertainment) and we had a good time building it. The final ship looked great and our little pirate captain was very happy with her accomplishment. She sailed the shelf seas for perhaps a week before being reshaped beyond repair by little land lubbers and now resides in Davey Jones's locker (the recycling center).

My children are 3 and 6 years old, they love doing this puzzle; however, it is essential that I 'help' them with doing this as it is to many pieces for them to do on their own. I don't 'take over' and insert pieces for them; however, I often have to find pieces that I know will fit and offer it to them and tell them to find where to put this next one. They have many years of 'growth' still available in this puzzle. As for all Orchard jigsaw puzzles, the pieces are strong and robust.

Bought this for my 4 year old and he absolutely loved it. The picture is great and it’s great having the poster too. Nearly every piece has something fun going on. I was worried that 100 pieces would be too many for him but he managed it with no problems. Held his attention beautifully with plenty of heart warming giggles along the way.A couple of the pieces show signs of fraying straight out of the box, but I hope that it will last well as this puzzle is sure to get lots of use.

I brought this puzzle as part of my Son's 4th birthday present. I know the recommended age is 6-9 years, but my Son loves puzzles & every other puzzle he has he can do all by himself which doesn't give us much opportunity to do one together. We spent more time on this puzzle, putting it together and as there is so much going on in the puzzle we were able to talk about everything he could see. The back of the box even has some good question ideas for you to ask - makes it more fun!

Lovely colourful, good quality Jigsaw puzzle. My 5 year old has really got into puzzles and she loved doing this one. Every piece has an image on it and is unique (she has a few where all the pieces are a block colour for example) and although this did present a welcome challenge for her being so big, she loved doing it and was able to complete it with only a small amount of direction ("why don't you find all the boat or sail pieces first"). Would highly recommend this!

This is a really fun product. There is lots of humour hidden within the image too, such as text written on boards and walls in the picture. 100 pieces is about right for my six-year-old. It's a challenge but it's not too much so as to become boring. My complaint to Orchard Toys would be that the labelling across the top front of the box obscures some of the image so when constructing the jigsaw there is a section that is not visible.

I have bought this to send abroad - it will not be received for 4/5 weeks so cannot yet give a review of the reaction of the recipient. However, I was really pleased to read on the box that not only is it a jigsaw but also educational in that the child can play games - such as "find a bird" etc. A lot of info on pirate ships, and a large poster to pin to the wall. I am delighted with it and I just know it will give much pleasure.

I bought this for my 4 year old granddaughter. It was her first 100 piece jigsaw and she loved it. We completed it together (just a little help from me). It does come with a large picture/poster of the completed puzzle for you to follow as you work on it. There is a lot of detail in the picture if you want to play looking for certain items. I did think it was quite pricey but it is a lovely puzzle and I would recommend it.

Bought for my 4-year-old son for Christmas. I was worried it would be a bit advanced for him but he can do most of the puzzle with very little help by finding the colours that go together (i.e. green for the octopus etc). As usual Orchard puzzles are great, we love the picture and the colours are vibrant. It also came with a really nice poster (same picture as the puzzle) which we put in our son's room.

Piecing puzzles together entertains all ages, but the Pirate Ship puzzle goes that little bit further for children, adding to their enjoyment and allowing them to develop their skills at the same time. It's ideal for older children to do themselves and for parents to help the younger ones, particularly as there are various items to look for in the picture once the puzzle is complete. Highly recommended.

I bought this for my nephew's 4th birthday, he's previously completed other 100 piece puzzles but this one was more challenging and he used the helpful guide picture to help him complete. The puzzle is much better quality than other brands and there are lots of characters doing interesting things which we talked about. I would definitely buy more orchard puzzles in the future.

This puzzle is great - i bought it for my children when they were 4 and we (parents) had to do it. A year later it is easier and they can do it with little help. It has a great design (as all Orchard Toys the graphics are great)., lots of details and the children are learning to describe what they see and to comment on the different parts of the ship. A great buy!
