I bought this to replace the stock cooler for the i7 9700f that came in my prebuilt. The product was packaged beautifully, with a small box for mounting hardware, thermal paste and a few other accessories in the top. There was a large box containing the cooler itself in the bottom. (edited)The installation took about 2 hours (mind you, I am new at upgrading computers)  and would have taken a lot less time if I had realized initially that the back panel of my PC case was removable and had a cutout allowing me to access the rear of my motherboard.Noctua provides very well written and clear instructions for how to mount this cooler. In the box, you will find instructions for both Intel and AMD platforms. If you're building a system and you know what you're doing, it'll probably take no more than 10-15 minutes for you to put this cooler in. If you're swapping a cooler like me and have no clue what to do, you'll get by with the instructions in 1-2 hours, maybe faster. (edited)As for noise, when my system is idling, I don't hear this cooler at all. At full load, it ramps up to about 1200RPM, but the noise level remains minimal and it is certainly a huge improvement over my original cooler. Sound tests show it peaking at around 30 decibels, whereas my old cooler would top out around 55.The performance of this cooler is beyond anything I could have expected. My CPU used to idle at around 55C and would heat up to 88+ with my old stock cooler. Thanks to the NHU 12 S I am now seeing idle temps at 33C and peak temps no higher than 55. Overall , my system feels much more stable thanks to this upgrade.Lastly, this cooler is absolutely gorgeous. I've made a few upgrades since purchasing my prebuilt and I think it really pulls them all together. I did make the mistake of not measuring the inside of my case, however, and I failed to account for the raised position of the body of the cooler over the CPU. The heatsink has a couple of protrusions on the top of it which have prevented me from being able to place the glass panel back onto my case once I finished swapping coolers. My case is 19.61" x 7.28" x 16.57", so if your case has a similar width 7.28", you might want to consider buying the smaller NHU 9S cooler.

If you need to ask what this is or what it’s for then you probably don’t need it! But for those that are interested, this thing is brilliant! Yes, for an air cooler it’s a bit on the pricey side but the performance is outstanding. I run a Ryzen 3600 processor at stock speeds with (until I installed the Noctua) the supplied Wraith cooler. The Wraith was okay, idling at 43ish and hitting mid 80’s under load but it was noisy. When the fan ramped up I found it distractingly noisy in my home office.Replacing it with the Noctua U12S has seen that drop to 37 idle and 66 but much more importantly (to me at least) it’s much much quieter than the wraith. Even setting the CPU fan profile for low volume the temperature only increases to 70.I don’t really overclock (in my experience it’s not really worth the hassle) but I can imagine this being perfect for those that do.Physically it’s tall but not particularly wide. As such it doesn’t obstruct RAM slots and fit well in my Fractal Design Define 7 Compact. As a bonus, the fitting was super simple. I’m normally a bit nervous about fitting coolers but this is honestly the simplest I’ve ever attempted and much easier than the stock Wraith (and that isn’t exactly daunting). Plus Noctua seem pretty good at planning for future compatibility, so unless Intel or AMD go wildly different in the future I expect it will be good for years. This thing is brilliant. It comes supplied with everything you need to fit modern Intel and AMD sockets and also has a handy screwdriver, it performs brilliantly and is doormouse quiet. Yes you can get (quite a bit) cheaper coolers, it’s not far off AIO money and the D15 is an alternative (and one that I thought about) but given the extra cost and size (and that it does overhang RAM slots) given how well it performs the U12S was the right choice for me.I don’t often give stuff five stars but this deserves it.

I needed a new cooler for my ASUS Z390 TUF-Gaming Plus WIFI ATX motherboard since I lost the mounting plates for previous cooler (switched from AMD to Intel CPU). I heard the Noctua fans were really quiet and like everyone else I really can't stand that brown color. The backplate for the classic EVO 212 was too tall for my case (Elite 430)- again typical problems with EVO 212 just being such an awkward size for so many systems. Thought I'd give this a try because it looks awesome and have heard good things, and the price seemed reasonable. Not only did the NH-U12S backplate fit just fine, it was far easier to install than the D92 I had previously. It fits perfectly and the instructions were fairly straight forward, with lots of guides online to help guide me.The fan is remarkably quiet I honestly thought my previous fans were quiet but I'm going to be replacing every fan in my system now with Noctua (if I can find black) or something similar. It keeps the CPU very cool and even when it picks up at full RPM its very quiet - and I'm not even using the like adapter PWM switch it came with (which allegedly makes it even quieter).Honestly this CPU cooler looks awesome and works awesome and was almost a joy to install (took me a while, but half of that was figuring out how to use the thermal paste LOL - twist the black cap - use pliers (carefully) if you need better grip). Only complaint is that I wish it came with a second fan so I could have the push / pull arranagement - it does come with the extra clip though so you can easily attach another fan - I just want all black instead of the antique signature brown lol)5/5 would buy again. Looks almost apple-esque if you add a matching all black push fan.

I was running an NZXT M22 Kraken liquid-cooled system on my ROG Strix motherboard with i5-8600k chip and RTX 2060. Not overclocked, playing games like Apex Legends, DOTA 2, COD Warzone, and Black Desert. I was seeing temperatures at idle, no load around 30 to 35 degrees C. After playing any one of these games for about 30 minutes, temps would exceed 80 and even go above 90 while in-game. Everyone said "try re-seating your thermal paste, reset your bios to default" etc. Did both of those things with little to no changes; thermal paste was Kryonaut grizzly by the way. So I start looking at Noctua air coolers. Considered getting the NH-D15 (the incredibly large 140mm cooler)but was concerned about fitment on the MB around the RAM sets. Found the NH-U12S in sexy black. Kudos to all the previous folks that wrote positive reviews about it, because I placed nearly all my faith in those reviews. Ordered it, and could not be happier. Temperature at idle is now high 20s; gaming under load for over an hour produced temps never exceeding 67. And because it runs cooler, the fans in my tower don't kick into overdrive, making gaming a quieter, more pleasant experience. These are the pros.Cons: a big, black heat sink with a black fan on it will never be aesthetically pleasing like the floating, color-changing lights that a liquid-pump can provide. But to me, looks come second when it comes to performance and longevity. Well worth the price, easy to install and I would recommend it to anyone suffering heat issues.

Not really anything to dislike, though I did struggle a bit getting all the screws to catch at the same time during the initial install.Once I solved that, my 10600K idles in the mid to low 30s, mid-high 60s under load, and I couldn't get it hotter than that except using a stress test, even when I tried. The AI overclocking algorithm on my Asus MB thinks I've got a custom water loop. For $70 it's an absolute bargain. I also purchased a second fan that I don't need, and haven't installed yet, but it was so inexpensive I figured just to do it.It's audible, but just barely if the room is otherwise dead quiet at 100%, in a p600s anyway. At a more reasonable fan speed for when idle or lightly loaded, there is no noise whatsoever. With this there is absolutely no need for an AIO water cooler (much less a custom loop), unless you have a unique use case or are literally getting that strictly for aesthetics. I have to admit they do look better to be sure.I can't recommend this in any stronger terms, unless you've got a CPU that just makes too much heat. Then look at the double tower version. But with a TDP of 170, those are few and far between. Just be a bit careful getting the screws aligned right during the initial installation. My disability may have at least been partially responsible for that, as I was building in bed in my lap, not on a flat table.Just buy it!KevyKevTPA

I am writing this only a couple hours after installation, If I find any issues I will update.I installed the cooler in under 15 minutes, instructions are very simple and are very easy to follow, the only thing needed for installation on AM4 is the backplate. On a Ryzen 5 3600 paired with a GTX 1070, with stock cooler (I believe it is the Wraith Stealth) after about an hour of gameplay on COD: MW was average around 70 Celsius with a peak of 78With this cooler, after about an hour on the same game, temperatures averaged around 45-50 Celsius with a high of 53.If you are on an AM4 platform and are upgrading from the stock cooler and have not changed from the stock thermal solution,be very wary removing the cooler from the motherboard.Twice I have pulled the processor clean out of the motherboard (on 2 completely different systems) whilst staying attached to the cooler, and both times I bent some processor pins, but careful straightening with a small flathead, some serious precision and patience, and both of them were fine.Overall: Great cooler, dropped 20-25 degrees from stock cooler, relatively inexpensive, all black aesthetics are beautiful in my build, fits inside my case very well (Corsair iCue 220T RGB), very easy installation for AM4 (unsure on intel), no noticeable sound difference to me, but sound is not something I am particularly focused on10/10 would recommend

I was looking for a replacement cooler for my AMD Wraith Stealth cooler that came with my 3700x. Although it looked cool with the RGB, it was very loud (surprisingly) and had some serious coil whine when changing speeds based on usage. It was average for cooling power. After researching air and water cooling solutions I decided to go for this Noctua as it was less expensive at $70 compared to the The beefier DH-15 ($95). I didn’t think the power was warranted for the 3700x.I found this model in all-black which I felt fit the case aesthetic very nicely in my build.Very easy to install as the instructions are simple, and packaged very nicely in a way that follows the instructions. The fan is SILENT even under heavy load - it is extremely impressive.Night and day difference from the wraith stealth. Temperatures are controlled perfectly. The only thing left in my case that makes noise is the case intake fans from Fractal that came with my Meshify-C. I’m considering swapping them out for Noctua somewhere down the line!Another nice benefit of this model is that you can buy another fan to sit opposite the standard one, to make a push/pull configuration and effectively match the performance of the DH-15 I’d imagine. This flexibility is nice for the future if needed.

I bought it to cool my R7 3800x. The cooler that came with the CPU was beautiful but loud and during gaming I saw it going up to 75 degrees or so with PBO enabled. After buying the Noctua I used just the push configuration at first and saw temperatures not higher than 71 degrees while heavy gaming with PBO which is a good improvement in my opinion. Just bought the second fan for the push/pull configuration and I see an improvement of 2 to 3 degrees which is not amazing but not bad either. I just wanted to maximize the cooler’s potential and why not. Now temps are mostly mid to high 60’s while heavy gaming so no complains there. AMD CPUs are known to be very sensitive to temperature and it shows,I can tell my frequencies are considerably higher now compared to the stock cooler that it came with. Also the cooler is dead silent. Noctua makes easy to upgrade to the second fan, the box comes with extra wires and 4 thick anti-vibration pads which are needed in case you want to install a second fan. The installation was easy and the quality seems great so far. No regrets buying this, my 3800x is happy. Planning in upgrading to a R7 5800x and maybe I will write an update.

Well I just updated my PC with a Asus b450 gaming MB, Ryzen gen3 3600, G Skill rgb 32gb ram. The stock AMD cooler that came with the chip works ok but was running at 60 celcius and close to 75 under some stressful gaming. It actualy reached 80 a few times while playing Metro Excodus and my CPU alarm went off which I have set for that number. Now with the new cooler I am running at 45 no load and 65 under load, a pretty significant drop in temperatures. Also with the ability of the Asus AI Suite 3 I was able to adjust all of my fans including CPU fan which are all set on silent and I can barely hear anything, and temp's on CPU are still low, amazing. Installation was ok, pretty straightforward. The cooler itself looks very nice and fits with my black and gray theme with nice craftsmanship on it's construction. The packaging is bar none to any other cooler I have ever bought. Quality is through and through on this product and it's ability for future proof ability and a 6 year warranty it's worth the extra money to me. Very satisfied with my purchase.

All in all great cooler. At first I didn't believe all the hype about Noctua but I think I'm going to be a loyal customer now. I was looking to replace the stock cooler on my Ryzen 5 3600 as it was just running a bit too hot with the stock cooler getting to 70c+ and staying there after an hour or two of gameplay or heavy work load. The install of this cooler was extremely simple compared to some of the beefy tower coolers I bought in the past. After the install the ryzen 5 3600 doesnt go past 60c underload if it does its quick put back to 50c range within seconds. The fan is extremely quiet and feels very high quality. The build of the cooler is solid. However I did bend one of the fins by accident (my fault I think though as the fan clips were putting up a fight) nothing major though. I'm glad noctua finally made an all black cooler it looks great in my build. They give you everything you need (thermal paste, etc) for the install. You will need the AM4 original backplate that came with your mobo however.

Easy to install on AM4 and fits the same backplate that comes with 3600x. Add the spacers (box contents clearly shows bits for each platform) and brackets then screw cooler to brackets. Hardest part was removing old stock cooler, it was stuck to the CPU and so needed some clockwise ‘wiggle’.Clears the RAM easily enough. There is no overhang to the RAM slots. Reduced temperatures in 3600x by about 20c. Stock settings (auto) with stock cooler I was getting 85c+ so I undervolted (1.25v) and locked at 4.2GHz which reduced temps. Installed this, and went back to auto and now I have my 4.2GHz all cores in cinbench but with single core boosting to 4.4Ghz in games and temps around 67c.I kept the GPU in for install but would be much easier without, especially adding the clip for the fan on the GPU side.Great cooler. Very pleased. Much quieter than the stock 3600x cooler.

I knew I only wanted one brand to sit atop my beautiful now CPU and it had to be Noctua.I did buy a second fan for it. Half for peace of mind, half for the symmetrical look. I like that it has no RGB, no plastic and no gimmicks. Very straight forward to install, and I had never installed an aftermarket cooler before. Came with its own thermal paste, which I expected, but you never do really know, so that was nice. Also comes with a screw driver just in case, and parts for AMD and Intel mounts.I did personally have trouble getting one of the two mount screws to grab into the bracket, but it did eventually go in after some nervous cursing. It's not to sharp, the black coating is perfect in every spot and it is a beast.I'm glad they finally make black coolers, and keep the rest of the gimmicks away. I just wish they made ever so slightly shorter coolers.

Unboxing was a pleasant experience. Noctua really put attention to detail in the way they pack things together and give you lots of extra bits in case that you need them. In my case I used the included AM4 backplate with my motherboard and installation was really easy. Took me 5 minutes in total, remove the old Wraith stock cooler, clean paste, reapply paste and screw in new cooler. It has really improved the temperatures from my ryzen 2600, with the stock cooler I was around 70-75 when under load. Now it barely goes above 60 when similar loads, but the best feature and the main reason I bought this cooler is the silence. When idling the fan is whisper quiet, and even when under load the sound is quite manageable.Overall really happy with my purchase :) I can highly recommend it.

I LOVE this Noctua fan. First of all, they were so prompt shipping my cooler. It was shipped out same day I ordered it, and arrived about a week ahead of quoted date. It came from Austria to Washington in about 2 days. Secondly, they included a super helpful screw driver for tightening down the CPU cooler. I wound up using that screw driver on virtually every other component in my build. Thirdly, that CPU cooler is keeping my Ryzen 9 3950x with 16 cores well under 70° under load. I’ve also complimented my case with 2 140mm 3000rpm fans in the front, 2 in the top, and a 120mm 2000rpm fan in the back. I will recommend Noctua to literally anyone I talk to about doing a build.Hopefully in the future they add more colors than just black, given the stock brown is horrendous.

This heat sink and all involved parts feel very premium -- no sharp corners on the metal and everything fits securely in place. My spec list is:CPU - Ryzen 5 3600MoBo - MSI B450 TomahawkRAM - 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200 MHzPSU - Corsair CX Series 550 Watt 80 Plus BronzeStorage - Sabrent 512GB Rocket SSDI was using the AMD stock cooler that came with the Ryzen 3600. My idle CPU temp was around 60-65 C. Now with this new cooler, I'm idling around 45 C and about 72 C under load. Safe to say this has been a great investment. This product also does come with thermal paste. I ended up buying a different kind so I'm not sure how well the included thermal paste works.
