Introduction:I bought NHL 10 to make the step up from NHL 08. The two years difference makes the price of the game not too excessive and a well thought out purchase considering what is in the game. How I play these types of games:I am not an avid NHL fan, but I would be if I had ESPN TV. I am an avid Soccer/Football guy, I play, watch and breath Football. In my football and other team oriented games I play and team up with friends and create a team in the game to challenge for the highest place. We do not create our 22 players to the greatest standards, but leave them competitive enough to earn a decent position. This allows us to play tactically and work in a team.CreationZone:The Creation Zone allows you to edit/create your players (unlimited amount for what I can tell)to place in any team you like in the future (using the Team Movement option). You can also create a team, but this is extremely limited as you can not put them into the General Manager Mode (which gives the most manager interaction), which is a little dissapointing. Generally the Player Create function gives you a fair amount of options when it comes to making the player's face, but enough to give the general look of a player (not as good as PES2010 for example). This version allows you to put in a custom City and Country which is a plus. The Gameplay Itself:Okay on to the good part. The gameplay is almost perfect in most areas.- It allows us to lock on to certain positions in the team so we can play where we wish (where our players are), just like in previous versions.- The player movement is fluid, there is a solid sense of inertia and what your pressing on your controller.- The 360 passing is an excellent addition allowing us to perfectly slot a pass through two defenders. Although this takes getting used to.- The semi-360 shooting is exceptional as always with NHL games.- The players now position themselves much better than previous versions, looking for open space and following your tactics to a tee.- The small gaps where you annoy opposing players was a must from NHL 08 and I am glad to see it in NHL 10. This allows you to start fights or just aggrivate other players, these can also result in penalties which is just brilliant.- The play up against the boards is another excellent feature and is something ive seen a lot in real life hockey. It is fairly solid, although in the tutorial it is easy to poke check the puck out of the player but in the game it is MUCH harder.- The First Person fight system is okay, takes getting used to, they may perhaps improve on this in the next few years.- The general sense of toughness and speed are shown well.- The player can now grab the puck out of the air and place it on the floor which is excellent!- The player can (if you time it right) shoot, pass or clear the puck from the air! Conclusion:This game is a must have, especially if the price drops. It really makes me wish that the football games like Pro Evo and Fifa follow suit and create the immersion I feel in the NHL games. I feel the control system in the latest NHL series should be placed in to football games to give us more control over our player's shooting, passing, tackling... the list goes on. Therefore this game is a definate 5 star.

It was once said that EA couldn't possibly improve on it's near perfect release of NHL 09, but on playing this game, I can't help but think that they've done it again, with two key inclusions to this year's release. Before going into those features however, let me first say that this release is everything that NHL 09 is and more. The realism of this game is so incredibly impressive, that it must have one of, if not the most complex game engines out there. The physics are perfect, and you actually feel like you're at a game with the amazingly well cued commentary and the atmosphere created by the artificial crowd. One of the features new to this release is the board play, an integral aspect to the game of ice hockey.Although it's surprising that this hasn't been included before, it definately completes the realism of the experience. It works surprisingly well, and although it happens a tiny bittoo often in my opinion, it can't be argued that it doesn't happen as much in a real gme of hockey. The second new feature is one on one first person fighting. After a bit of hitting each other, the option to 'drop gloves' pops up, and if you accept, you are thrown into first person mode using the analogue stick to successfully give your opponent a bashing. This can be very tricky to master: you use an analogue stick to move yourself and your opponent about, and your right to hit them. You often lose these bouts, and earn the player a five minute major, so it can get annoying after a few times, especially in the 'Be a Pro' mode.My favourite feature of any sports game is the section EA have named 'Be a Pro'. You create yourself in the game and do your best to get into the NHL and rise to the top. It's a lot of fun in NHL 10, but you'll be very careful to avoid penalties after a while due to the frustration of sitting watching the game. However, this is once again realistic as it must be very frustrating for real NHL players to not be on the ice. Needless to say, EA has done a great job this year of making 'Be a Pro' an exciting experience.Overall, the major question is: is it worth spending the money on a slightly improved game of which I already have? In all honesty, my answer is yes. Once seeing the board play and other new features in effect, you won't be able to go back to the old game so easily. A definate purchase for any sports fan or gamer, this game rates very highly in my books.

NHL 10 is the latest in a very long line stretching back around three consoles and 16 years or so in Ice Hockey games.Thankfully, they have never lost the sense of realism. The game modes are great and give you the sense of a hockey match. The crowd is very detailed and you even have "glass banging" fans that makes the atmosphere. It sounds and looks very real.On the Ice your movement is real and the physics of the skating is real. There are three modes of control the classic (which I use) the new dynamic controls which uses the analog stick to move and shoot and various things like lifting the stick, calling for the shot etc. You can be very tactical in defence and really control the style your team uses. When a fight breaks out you are placed in first person and have a good range of controls to make the fight interesting, it is not easy to win however! The Be a Pro mode is GREAT. You can create your player and customise with a variety of helmets, skates, gloves and even stick tape in the colour of your choice. On the Ice you can either pick a team to play on or enter the draft and see what happens. I have gone into the minors of New York Rangers and you must work your way up the ranks. You have to do line changes, call for a change to come back on and serve penalties in the penalty box. Your coach gives you feedback on your game after each shift. I enjoy the goalkeeper mode also but find it tricky to learn!Overall this is an awesome simulation of Ice Hockey that I highly recommend.

Having read the other review I thought I would leave one myself.I've had absolutely no issues with my game freezing, just pure gaming fun. It is quite simply one of the best sports games money can buy. Realistic graphics, realistic gameplay, absolutely addictive too. This game has been improved in all aspects. When a netminder you now have a greater array of movements you can pull off to make that all important save. An outskater has a greater level of detail within movement too. One rather big change to the game is the 1st person fighting which can take a bit of getting used to, but it works and I like it.When carrying out the Dynasty mode, you are also now scored points for how well you do as a GM.So no longer is it just about how well you do on the ice, you also have to look at your scouts and coaches off the ice and upgrade them as you go along.Be A Pro mode is once again a superb selling point. Adding to the success of the 09 version, where you now can play a prospects game before the season starts so you determine where you will be drafted.A huge array of unlockable bonus items such as hockey equipment and also attribute boosters are in the game too.Quite simply I love it! Well done EA Sports for yet another superb outing for the NHL series

Even though I am English, I love ice hockey. In fact I have been watching ice hockey since I was a small lad. Equally I have been playing ice hockey games since 1994. As someone with my background, this game to me is incredible, as the title suggests.Even though NHL 09 first brought realism to the game franchise, NHL 10 steps it up a gear. The gameplay is so realistic: you can now actually attack and pass the puck around properly to set up an attack in the end zone.Fighting is first person. Whilst the concept is good, there is work to be done. For me, I'd like an option for the entire game for blood to be shown. But nonetheless, if you mess your opponent up real nice, bruising and small cuts will become visible.Be a GM and Be a Pro are excellently presented and are extremely addictive. The hits you can dish out are big and painful...so that can only be great!Overall, this is a must have game. Whether you are an ice hockey fan or not, this game will please everyone! No game is perfect; every game has some glitches and NHL ensures they are at a minimum. Not perfect, but definitely incredible.

This game is really good. I haven't played the previous games in PS (only in PC) but the controls seem intuitive and easy to learn. The game modes offer you several different ways to play the game according to your mood or preferences. As soon as I tried be a pro I was locked in front of the TV for hours. Playing as yourself is great and you can also be a goalie which feels great and realistic enough because you're allowed to make spectacular saves and have large control over your goalie. If you like the NHL and haven't tried any game before this one give it a go, you're going to enjoy it for sure. Since I'm not familiar with previous PS games for this franchise I'm not sure if the improvements from last year's game are really that significant but,for a first timer in the PS system...this is a great game!

I've normally been a fan of the 2k hockey games but after reading all the reviews I decided to give this one a go.I'm not the world's biggest hockey fan so that's probably why I found the game so difficult to start off with. But after persevering with it, it turned out to be a really good game. The graphics are fantastic likewise with the game engine and there's a hell of a lot of teams to chose from! I still find the passing slightly difficult but I'm sure I'll get used to it in time.If you're a big fan of hockey or just fancy trying something different I'd definitely recommend this game.

EA went for gradual evolution over massive changes this year and for the most part the game is better for it. Fantastic game, the most realistic sports sim available in my opinion. My only gripe would be the introduction of a new store for the game, allowing the purchase of "upgrades" for both online and offline play. In a world pushing for ultra realism, do we really need a stick that gives +5 to shooting or a helmet that gives +3 to face-offs? At £40 for the game, are you not getting enough of our money EA?

I am a huge fan of the NHL series and when this one came out i had to buy it....and i wasnt disappointed with it. i love the fact that be a pro mode was more advanced than 09 but they also kept some of the things in 09 that i loved such as GM Mode and BAP mode. I love the fact that fighting is now more realistic and you pick your fights instead of fighting some randomer! Overall in love this game....if you looking for a good hockey game to get you into it then this is it! would reccomend to anyone

Bought NHL10 for my husband's birthday - and he's loved playing it. Far better than he expected. The last time he played hockey was about 3 years ago on PS2. He says this is so much better. The graphics are excellent, and it's great to be able to be an individual player and move up through the ranks from rookie to Stanley Cup. I debated whether to get this or the Wii motion plus NHL2K10 game. This is great as an individual, I think the Wii game will be good in a more social situation.

Having not played any hockey game in ages - I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was one of the best multiplayers I've ever played! Ice Hockey is a great game for end to end gameplay. You have 3 main roles - passing, shooting and kicking the crap out of the other side! Penalty shoot-outs - actually couldn't watch when my mate was taking his shots! So in conclusion. You really can't go wrong with this game now that it has come down in price. A real gem!

Having been a fan of the NHL series back to the mega drive days the lack of a "speed burst" button takes a little getting used to. Once mastered though the game plays far more realistically and makes you think about creating scoring chances. As usual for an EA game the presentation is excellent. Well worth buying if you like your sports games.

Really a nice one, EA Sports! This years NHL is not the usual yearly roster update, but a nice step ahead in the series.I really like the first person fights and the better Be A Pro-Mode.The only problem is the loooong loading time of several features like the Be A Pro-Shop.

14.9.2010

I previously owned NHL 07 and previous versions on the PC. NHL 10 is such an upgrade from 07, including better graphics, board play, checking, goalies, fights. Being able to drop the gloves after the play has finished is great fun, especially when playing against friends!

15.10.2009

A Brilliant game allround. Slight improvements made on last years game, but in fairness you can't really improve a game that much that won countless awards last year for it's gameplay.I would recommend this game to anyone who's a NHL fan and loves the games
