The characters of the DC universe (particularly Superman and Batman) have been staple parts of my cultural iconography growing up. When the first Mortal Kombat game came out I was hooked (at the impressionable young age of eleven) by the photorealistic gaudily clad characters with their magical powers and mythical backstories. I marvelled at the supernatural martial arts prowess of the characters that seemed so much more appealing to me than those of the Street Fighter universe and, yes, I may as well admit that the unrelenting violence and brutality appealed to me as well. When an older and (presumably)wiser version of me found out about this game it was like a focus group had created a game just to appeal to me personally!A fortnight ago I finally caved and bought myself an X Box 360 and this was the first game I ever put into it.As this was my first foray into the world of HD gaming I was mightily impressed how alive the respective characters and worlds of the two coliding universes with colour and texture. The DC Universe that had never escaped the 2 dimensional world of comics, expect in films and TV was given a new field of depth and realism. Batman's cape looks leathery and shiny while his armour really looks like a sophisticated fibre weave of some sort. Superman's cape looks as regal and velvety as you'd expect, The Flash's costume has the foam rubbery texture of the suit in the 90's TV series and Green Lantern's costume looks so amazing on so many levels I hope a similar design concept is used in the upcoming GL film. Similarly the visual world of Mortal Kombat has gained a septh that transcends the pixels and blocky polygons of my youth and the game gives a real depth to the look of the characters and their costumes. Liu Kang actually has a recognisable face rather than just being a slightly photoshopped Bruce Lee with long hair, Jax's uniform and cybernetic arms are loaded with hi-tech detail, the ninjas who have been identical in all but colour for so long now have very different costumes of different fabric and texture and Sonya Blade is... bouncy!Environments are beautifully rendered too, with Superman's crystaline Fortress of Solitude being my favourite by far but the cemeraty from the Mortal Kombat universe is suitably creepy and atmospheric. There's far more to the game than looks, though. Combat (or rather Kombat) is as brutal and savage as you'd expect and the Unreal engine does a great job of creating the illusion that these are actually superhuman beings knocking the livign daylights out of each other. As with all Mortal Kombat games, the mechanics of gameplay are fairly similar and once you've got the nuances of the combos and special moves committed to muscle memory then you can pretty much gain mastery of any character.MK vs DCU offers two main gameplay modes, an arcade mode and a story mode. Story Mode is of moderate length and allows you to choos ethe side of either the MK or Dc universe, playing out the story from the points of view of all your favourite characters. Sure, the plot is tenuous at times but has that charming comic book zaniness that makes any loopholes (or downright silliness) forgiveable. All the characters from both universes pretty much behave as you might expect and the characterisations are pretty much spot on.Arcade Mode does exactly what it says on the tin and is handy for when you just fancy an hour of frenzied button bashing action. The difficulty levels are adaptive and strike just the right balance between beign challenging and a pain in the bottom. Arcade mode will also permit you to perform fatalities of which each character has two (with DC superheroes using non-fatal finishing moves called Heroic Brutalities). Finishing moves may lack the explicit gore and bloodlust of previous Mortal Kombat games but all are fun to watch and appropriate to the characters (the Joker's are an absolute peach!).Taking the game online adds a whole new dimension but BEWARE! the mechanics of MK gameplay are such that the special moves and combos can be exploited and you will inevitably coem across one trick ponies who will happily do taht same, tedious, unblockable teleport punch move over and over and over and over again. It seems that to many winning at the expense of sapping all the fun out of the game is perfectly acceptable. All told this is a really solid fighting game that should appeal to all fans of the genre but it's MK and DC fans that will take the most pleasure from this. My only regret is that the game lacks the plethora of unlockable content (costumes, new characters etc.) usually associated with Mortal Kombat games.

The story is well done, the choice of fighters is limited when comparing the older Mortal Kombat games but for me i thought it was right for the story of the game. There really is only one bad point about it, that is extras. there is nothing to unlock other than the two boss characters at the end of each story. this gives the game some what of a simple presentation about it. extra characters for vs modes and actual different costumes would have added that little bit to make this seem like a well stocked game. Otherwise though you are given the main characters that you would have mainly played with from both sides MK and DC and an interesting story that flows with action.the characters great and so much fun to fight with especially the likes of the joker, the flash, subzero and many others. the game can be addictive if you admire the concept. to put it in simple terms this is a great playable movie.. just a shame there were no speacial features.

This was one of the best capcom vs video games ever, the capcom characters that you were use to were as they were suppose to be plus you have the additional dc characters. I personally hate the way superman and captain marvel are but I love the joker, they did an excellent job of making him act like we expect the joker to act including stopping in the middle of a fight to shake your hand, with a joy buzzer of course. Fun play

I had never played a Mortal Kombat game before in my life and after seeing this one on a Bleep Bloop review I knew I had to have it. It's so much fun allowing you to use all the superheroes and their awesome abilities. My personal favourite has to be Superman; heat vision, ice breath, awesome cape. What more is there to say?
