I picked this up mostly for the purposes of seeing how Maglite's traditional line has adapted in the face of competitors from folks like Streamlight and Surefire. Is it competitive with similarly sized modern flashlights? The answer is...yes, it is. Flashlight is big and bright, and really is mostly useful for poor visibility conditions as well as darkness, as the product description shows someone in adverse weather conditions with it. There really is no need for it to be THIS bright for most purposes, but it's great for what it is and has the traditional maglite quality feel. The glaring problem is that it uses D-cells. Why is this a problem? Lithium D-cell options are more rare than an honest congressman.I can only imagine that the reason why D-cells have persisted is because of "legacy" sort of devices like Maglite and folks just use akalines for them. Beyond the longevity issues, Akaline batteries of course run the risk of bursting as they age. So if you have this in your go-bag or something, and it's been untouched for a long period of time, who knows what the inside of the casing will look like.Maglite needs to figure out options other than D-cells for this, or it needs to talk the major manufacturers into making lithium D-cells.

Rural outdoors nightly use.I needed a tough 500+ lumen unit for distance illumination with Eco Mode to stretch the batteries. The ML300LX fits that role and survived several one meter drops to concrete. Good for occasional users.Experience:Downside is you have to rapidly cycle the switch by clicking it three times to enter Eco mode or click again to "off" and start over cycling back again through "High" "Medium" then trying again to stop at "Eco." Otherwise it's easier to just leave it on High and run the batteries (Duracell alkaline) down within an estimated one total hour of use. That is because the LED on high rapidly drains only two D batteries down from 1.6V to 1.47V (each)and the unit begins to dim and not cycle into Eco Mode, leaving you with just a low-illumination High setting that gradually dims out. In short it wastes batteries that might otherwise power an incandescent lamp or lower-lumened LED for longer.Add another battery and settle at on/off-only 160 lumens for a listed 80 hours and you have the bigger 3D LED Maglite choice.Still the ML300LX LED 2-Cell D unit is a solid offering for those who must have 500 lumens and may only use the flashlight sparingly.

It's a good flashlight. The two D cells give plenty of power for a bright beam, and the Maglite engineering makes for an easy twist-to-focus operation. I have D-cell and AA-cell Maglites at home and in the cars. I like the company's products. They are sturdy, and they work well, and they last forever. You may find the multiple modes in this flashlight useful. The factory default option is all I expect to use: one click of the thumb switch = high power; <click-click> = medium intensity; <click-click-click> = low intensity for longest battery life. Having turned it on with your choice of a single, double or triple click, you just need one click to turn it off.You can reset the modes to some other pattern than the factory default. For example, you can opt to have a strobe light, or a single bright pulse, among the actions. The instructions are provided, and it would not take long to adjust the modes... but I'll be honest, I will never remember HOW to switch modes, and I'm not going to keep the instructions by the flashlight to remind me. I suppose if I ever do want this Maglite to be a strobe, I'll look it up online.

Ok so I own many different flashlights from the $5 variety to over $100, this new Maglite is a big improvement over earlier models. First, it is very bright, lumens aside (since it is hard to believe some manufacturer claims) this is the brightest flashlight I own, just a little better than the Pelican 7060 which has a slightly better focused beam. The good thing is you can adjust the beam width, it is significantly better pattern than earlier Maglite models which didn't have smooth spill, and it faster to adjust, but not quite as smooth of spill as some $20 models I have which have a lens of sorts and wider pattern adjustments. But this is very good. Add to that this uses regular D cells and you really can't go wrong for about $50.The new grip looks cool, not sure it is AS grippy as the older knurled pattern, though this comes in either.

i bought a bunch of medium priced flashlights about 2 years ago, at places like home depot/lowes/costco. EVERY ONE OF THEM have failed by now.I guess there is only one way to guarantee you have a flashlight available if you need one, you have to NOT cheap out. So i bought this maglight. I have another maglight from 6 years ago that is still working, so....this one is a little thinner metal than my old one, but i guess that is ok...easier to carry

The solid Mags of yesteryear are no more. These are definitely lighter. For some reason the "laser-cut" parabolic beam achieved by the older generations, upon focusing the Mag cannot be achieved by this unit.It focuses into an awkward shape, with a secondary outer glow.Otherwise, its bright and works as a sturdy flashlight.Note: This review is for the Matte Black Mag with the rough, tactile grip.Cheers yall & happy shopping.

A torch. More like stellar fusion I'd say.I've never had a flashlight in my life that was too bright....But dang, I own one now. This thing is definitely bright in close quarters. I'd say perfect for outdoors or in larger areas. It appears durable and rugged. As good as any Maglite product should be.I'm guessing I will have this flashlight for many tears to come. It's a perfect general use size.

This flashlight seems to be very well built, and I like the feel better than the older 2-cell incandescent I have. Nicer grip. And the amount of light it throws is truly amazing. Which probably is thanks to LED technology, not the flashlight itself, but the whole package is excellent. I have not tried the different modes yet; will probably just leave it in the big bright mode.

The new LED Maglite is brighter than the origional Maglite. I converted 2 older Maglites to LED ( a 3D and a 3C) and those don't hold a candle to the new generation of LED lights. If you don't need a EDC the Maglight is as good as those high dollar, weird battery, imported lights.

Yes it expensive, but this thing is awesome for a D-cell flashlight. My company requires us to carry D-cell flashlights. I’m sure you could get all the features this has in a AA but if you need something bigger this is the one to have. I love the tactical setting on it!!!

As always, with MagLite, a well made light. It is bright enough, on the economy setting, actually only appearing just slightly dimmer than the medium setting. It seem slightly smaller, and lighter than the original Maglite, buy it is still a heavy duty product.

Maglite stepped up to the 21st century and made an even better, brighter flashlight. Feels lighter and tougher than before and like I said, it's far brighter than ever. I'll be buying a few more. Is it worth the money? So far it is but time will tell.

Bright, solid and well sized torch. Slightly shorter than the standard LED version of the Maglite it has a fetching matt finish on it, but is about twice as bright as the normal version. I got it at a good price, I note they are more expensive now.

Best torch in my life. Very nice grip, very sturdy, has a good of a weight (on the heavy side). Light levels are perfect. Used occasionally for about 10 minutes every few days and I haven't had to change the batteries yet since Christmas.

Awesome light. I feel bad that I purchased it for my bug out bag, and feel that it is too nice for just emergency use. Going to keep it closer to hand. Wish it were a little less expensive, but clearly, you get what you pay for.
