I have owned the 2AA Mini Maglite for 17 years and it hasn't really let me down. The only time it hasn't performed was when I depended on it on a trip to India when the tiny halogen bulb blew; in India it was then and probably is now next to impossible to find a replacement - however the spare bulb in the heel is an excellent feature and came to the rescue. I was on tenterhooks though as if that one went then I'd be stuck; it didn't. It's true that a conventional bulb can blow in any torch but a normal incandescent bulb can be found in most places where this cannot. The other weak aspect of this size and type of bulb is that they seem to soot up and the brightness dimishes after a few months,or weeks if you use it a great deal. I have replaced more bulbs for this reason than complete failure. The fact is though that without this kind of very small bulb this size and type of torch wouldn't be available except it is now possible to buy an LED upgrade which I understand doesn't compromise brightness but offers much longer battery - and bulb - life. This comes at a price but worth it to my mind. It is also possible to buy the Maglite with this upgrade already fitted. The beam can be focussed from flood to spot by rotating the reflector unit.Another feature rarely mentioned is that by removing (unscrewing) the reflector unit the torch will stand on its heel and become a 'candle'. This is true with many of the Maglite models and I used it to excellent effect in a restaurant in Northern India when the power failed. The whole of the small restaurant was adequately illuminated by the 'candle', everyone being able to move around safely by its light - a remarkable performance. I understand this candle feature is not available with the LED upgrade. Generally I have to say I prefer and use a head torch, the Fenix HP10, the Petzl Myo XP or RXP, but for a reliable, rugged, conventional small torch the Maglite cannot be bettered, in my opinion. Also there are times a head torch is not too convenient, though not many, and the mini-maglite is light, compact and mostly very dependable. I truly can imagine this little torch will outlive me!

I have a few silly passions and the maglite line of flashlights is one of them. Though I like them all, the mini maglite is my all time favorite and in my possession right now are probably five of them in assorted colors. Brilliant feats of engineering design don't come along all that often but this light would be one of them.....This functions as a standard flashlight that can cast a wider or narrower beam depending on how you turn the front piece, and the beam is a bright soft light. In a blackout, you can fully unscrew the front piece and invert it on the bottom of the flashlight thereby creating a hands free stand and the flashlight functions a bit like a candle (without the risk of catching surroundings on fire). The back end of the flashlight stores a spare bulb (such a smart touch).Long before there was an amazon or amazon reviews, I was waxing poetic about these flashlights and they are as well made today as they were then. Solid aluminum construction and good rubber seals all around. For a photographer I think this is a must have item. I keep one in my camera bag at all times. If I am hunting around in the dark they help me find my way. If I want to shoot a "painting with light" image they are often my go to light both because they are bright enough and soft enough to help create a pleasing night image with just a hint of light. With proper care these flashlights will last years. Replacement bulbs are readily available. The thing that causes me to ultimately toss one of these away is when the glass cover over the bulb gets too hazy from wear to be useful. But this takes a long long long time.BOTTOM LINE: I can't sing the praises of these maglites highly enough. Great for everyone, but photographers should always have one on hand.

Update: I was too harsh when I wrote the original review. In fact, I bought two more to have handy in case of power failures. If you use a flashlight for work, say plumbing or cabling in darkish areas, the lack of a single button is a pain; for a reliable light that keeps the batteries fresh a long time, this is a good buy.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Good, solid little flashlight, and very bright. Just be aware that there is no button; you must rotate the head to turn it on, meaning you need two hands. This is NOT the flashlight to keep by your bed at night, because if you hear a sound and have to reach for protection and the light, you will be fumbling to turn this on. Yes, it is possible, with practice, to turn it on with one hand--if your hand is large and strong enough (but not too large!).Another situation: If you are out walking in the evening and a car starts coming towards you, a button to turn on the light quickly is much better than fumbling around trying to twist the head.Of course if your hand is sweaty or you have put on some lotion and suddenly need a light, again, you need two hands, and even then, you are fumbling. On a postive note: One way to measure a flashlight's quality is by how well it preserves batteries when not in use. This is almost as good as its D cell siblings, and much better than any other AA flashlight that I've used. Batteries stay fresh in this a long, long time.

I have a flashlight problem, but the Mini Maglite isn't it. I just have way too many flashlights because I like always having one close at hand. My husband also loves flashlights, which means we have too many twice-over, but on the bright side, it also means we can't judge each other for our addiction.Maglites are nifty. They're tough and they feel great in the hand. They put out a lot of light, and you can adjust the beam's width. The twist-on switch means it'll never turn on by accident by being bumped and leave you with dead batteries. They include a spare bulb in the tail cap. You can twist the top all the way off, then set it wide end down and use it as a stand for the flashlight in "candle mode".I usually buy the holster pack.I don't always walk around with a flashlight on my belt, but when I need to, I have that option. It holds the flashlight snugly enough that it won't fall out, so it doesn't need a flap and you can access it quickly with one hand. The holster is pretty rugged and only starts to fray after years of use.My only complaint about these is that they're not as bright as the newer LED versions. It wouldn't be hard to convince me to buy some new Maglites, but the LED versions don't come in purple. But then, these are plenty bright enough, so maybe it's for the best that they're not giving me too easy an excuse to upgrade.

Classic Maglites. I know some people will ding these because they are not as bright as LED versions-when they bought an incandescent penlight in the first place. These are as bright as any small flashlight using Xenon tech gets.As much as I am a Mag-fan, I must mention that unlike any other flashlights I have ever owned, I have had TWO of these over the years where the battery furthest in swells and is impossible for me to remove it.Anyhoo, I needed a new bulb for an old 2-AA pen light. For the above price it made sense to just use the extra battery that comes with all Maglights and have TWO Maglite pen lights for maybe a Dollar or so more than the 2-pack of bulbs would cost while waiting for a deal on Xenon replacements.Bonus round: This kit came with a lanyard,a pocket pen clip and three colored lenses, none of which I have never had a use for, but setting the lenses aside in a small plastic case, just in case, I am using the Hexagonal rubber auxiliary lens holder on the light end to prevent this from rolling.Gotta say that mini bulbs like these -not Maglite in particular, but for autos or whatever always seem to be proportionately stupid expensive across the board.Yeah, there are better, more modern tech flashlights and not merely referring to LEDs, but the old school, old trusty standards have their own functional appeal.

I see Maglite Mini Mags for around $10 all of the time. They are handy little flashlights. This model was the older incandecent bulb type flashlight. They are OK, but if your have ever experienced an LED flashlight, it hard to be happy with the old style bulb. I was able to pick up my Blue Mini Mag for $7.50, shipping included. I added a Terralux TLE-20 LED upgrade for $13. So I now have $20 into it. Now it has a nice bright white light, about 28 Lumens, and the battery life is extended by six times. I figure over time the Terralux LED upgrade will pay for itself in saving on batteries. If I was looking for a new Mini Mag, I would probably just buy the newer LED version of the flashlight.I see them on sale for around $20. In my opinion the older incandecent Mini Mags benefit greatly from the LED upgrade, thus I only gave it 4 stars. But I am very happy with my upgraded version, and would recommend the upgrade if you already own an older Mini Mag. It is useful when I get up in the middle of the night, and wander around the house. I still have my bigger 4 D cell Maglite with an LED upgrade for outside duty, it is much brighter and has a much longer throw. But the Mini Mag is just fine for inside the house, and any close range task. I just love the Blue anodized color of my Maglite Mini Mag flashlight.

My Father was a career member of the RCMP. He introduced me to Mag Lite flashlights when I was still a teen. He carried one on duty most of his career and my Mom still has it for use around the house.I have about a dozen Mag Lites, not including these ones I bought, in several different sizes and ages. When I was a younger man I worked a lot of personal and site security jobs. I once dropped a Mag Lite down a stair well; it fell over three stories and even stayed lit. I trust them and use them all the time. I carry one on my person any time I am out of the house.I bought these to take over from some older Mini Mags I own (like the one I every day carry). There is nothing at all wrong with those older ones; they are still going strong. I just wanted to see if the new tech and Xenon bulbs made a difference. They sure do. Excellent brightness and the same quality and durability of craftsmanship I expect of these excellent lights. My only regret: I only had the spare cash to buy the three I did. I should have bought half a dozen or more.Highly recommended by me.

Don't let the small size of this flashlight fool you. It is indeed a well made, sturdy instrument capable of providing lumination the same as one twice its size. I live in a studio apartment and due to the coming hurricane and having no flashlight looked for one to best serve my purposes. I needed something to handle all necessary tasks in case of bad situations as well as being handy day to day. This instrument is compact and with a simple twist of the head can go from a wide flood beam to a bright direct spotlight. And it actually can be reassembled simply to display the same light as a lit candle. Everything this item says it does it does and all only on 2 AA batteries. For me battery life was very good.I can't recommend this flashlight enough. If I were to loose power in my apartment it would provide all the light necessary to move around, do things and even read. It is that strong. And for walking outside in the dark, changing a tire etc. it does the work of a much bigger and bulkier flashlight. Great investment at a great price.

We've had a series of mag-lites over the years and have used them for home repairs in dark places (under the house, under the kitchen sink, in the attic), barn chores, car breakdowns, investigating strange noises in the house in the wee hours, and even once when we lost the house keys in the grass at night (the bright light made the keys reflect and we found them!). They're inexpensive, reliable, water-resistant, small enough to keep in a coat pocket, and run on AA batteries. They're perfect for so many jobs, and are so durable. Once in a while we lose one or give one to someone who doesn't return it, but I don't think we've ever broken one.I bought this M2A016 MAGLITE to replace one we lost, and it's every bit as good as the previous ones. The light is bright and long-lasting, and the beam can be focused down to a small area when needed. But the main reason I'm giving this light 5 stars is because it's made in the USA. We try to support American businesses when we can, and I was happy to find that this model is made here.

The main reason to get this torch is to get a bright light in a fairly small and light package. The Maglite Mini Mag AA is not much larger than 2 AA batteries in length and delivers considerably more light than the single AA version I have replaced. It comes with a nylon belt holster which may or not be usefull to you; mine lives in a laptop bag and having a torch with you as you travel is always useful. As with most all maglites you can use the light as a spotlight with varying degrees of light; but new to me was the ability to or remove the head completely and slot the torch body into it and thereby gaining a candlelight. The torch has various bulb modes including reduced brightness,a flashing light and SOS morse code the latter two for me seem like gimics; but because there is no button accessing these getting access to them is rather hit and miss by pressing the lampshroud in to change the mode; a button on the side or end cap which have been simpler.

The old style incandescent AA maglites are excellent, classic lights, but the beam pattern sucks.I highly recommend taking some fine grit sandpaper to the plastic lens to make it opaque. Since it's only a 14 lumen light, and used mostly in close quarters, you'll appreciate the smooth beam pattern much more, and no longer a need to focus the reflector. Just remove the lens first as to not scratch the anodizing.I also carry the AA LED Pro+, which doesn't need this treatment, but is often too bright for paperwork in the field, even on low.Don't use alkaline batteries in a Maglite unless an emergency. I've ruined countless lights over the years to leaking batteries; have salvaged some, but now use Eneloop or similar rechargeables that won't leak and have more consistent output. Plus you'll save enough money in the long run to buy a friend a Maglite. They make great gifts.

After a power outage, my grandmother needed a new hand-sized flashlight and I knew a mini Maglite such as this would be durable and easy for her to use in the dark. The design is sturdy, so it will endure wear and tear that would break most plastic flashlights while the mechanism for unscrewing the top is less likely to wear out than a switch or button. The “candle function” involves fully unscrewing the top and using it as a base for the handle, so that the bulb glows like a candle flame. In the event of a blackout, it can be used for lighting if you need to read over instructions for a circuit-breaker, look up the local power authority’s phone number, or simply read to pass the time. The mini Maglite offers great value for its cost and my grandmother immediately decided to use it in favor of the cheap plastic flashlight on which she’d been relying.

I greatly prefer this flashlight’s incandescent light to most other’s bright blueish LED blare. While not as bright as an LED flashlight, this flashlight is much easier on the eye and plenty bright for finding things in darkened places. I was happy to see that the batteries were included, but disappointed that no strap was thrown in, although a strap hole is present at the top of the flashlight. The light’s focus is easily adjusted by twisting the top, and the whole flashlight becomes a helper when the lights go out by converting the head of the lamp into its base. Strangely, there is no on/off click switch, but a turn of the head provides the same function.I love the feel of incandescent light and hope to replace all my flashlights with these in the coming days. I hope you found this short review helpful.

Ok...maglite needs to step up game to compete with brightness of CREE lights, but maglite is a solid built flashlight with great dependability. For house or car the pocket size is great to keep by bedside or in glovebox. This bundle kit makes an awesome gift set at a good price point and value you know you can count on.One word or caution...check your batteries every 6 months. It's not bad in the D cell, but when a battery goes bad in the pocket flashlights, it's damn near impossible to get open much less get the battery out. I just tossed one of these that was 30 years old because I could not get the end screwed off with vise grips. So this is a replacement, but I bought a second for a gift for my teen daughter that just started driving and will be off to college next year. Great light for dorm room

These are extremely handy flashlights, both for their size and for their brightness, with only 2 AA cells. The small holster that comes with them is also a plus, because you'll always know where the flashlight is when you need it (if you can remember to put it back in it's holster and not leave it on top of the refrigerator, under the cat, or behind the stove. I've always been impressed with how bright these small flashlights are and, living in a salty environment like Hawaii, how well the flashlights resist corrosion. Definitely convenient to keep in the car, in a knapsack, in a kitchen drawer, or in a first aid kit. We now own 7 of them, and they are each use at one time or another. Sturdy, reliable, excellent illumiation, and great to have on hand or keep in a pocket during power failures.
