NEW COMMENTS:When I don't sleep well, I have a short temper. I didn't sleep well, last night. So, when my LED Minimag didn't stay on, this morning; I lost my temper and slammed the flashlight against a desk, hard enough to dent the edge of the desk and scare my Lab out of a perfectly good squirrel dream. I decided to strip the flashlight for parts, and in the process I discovered that the battery compartment "cap" (on the butt end) was not tight. After tightening that cap, the flashlight worked like new. Here are two new comments about this product:1. Make sure the end cap is screwed on tightly (but you already knew that).2. Don't whack the flashlight against expensive furniture (it's bad for the furniture and scares dogs).Maglite,I apologize for doubting the durability of this little flashight; and I take back the nasty things I said when I thought mine had failed. This thing is TOUGH (just not idiot-proof)!ORIGINAL REVIEW:Love the gray color, size and light weight. I think this 2 cell puts out as bright a light as my 3 cell. I presume the batteries in the 3 cell might last a little longer, but it is an awkward size to carry on my belt. Anyway, this little 2 cell LED model is great!I don't remember the Amazon description saying anything about a selector "switch" that allows you to choose full power beam, reduced (battery saving) beam, steady flashing light, or a flashing SOS (3 shorts, 3 longs, 3 shorts). When I read that on the packaging, I couldn't find a "switch". Just by accident, I found that by turning the light off and back on changes the setting. The reduced beam is plenty bright for most needs and is supposed to extend the battery life significantly. I presume all these 2 cell LED Mini Mags have that feature, but maybe it was just mine. If they all DO have that feature, Amazon should surely say so, because it is a great selling point.I see some reviewers try to compare Maglites to other brands; but some of the other brands they mention cost triple what I paid for this little Mini Mag gem. In this price range, I don't think you can beat it. Buy several, because they make welcome gifts (just ask my daughter, ha).

I previously used an original Maglite Mini with a third-party LED retrofitted (before "hacking" was popular...). That lasted around 15 years until I dropped it and the LED module broke. When looking for a replacement I found that Maglite has caught up and now makes these LED versions of the Mini. Overall I would recommend getting one of these over the original style Maglite Mini.Pros:- Very high brightness - startling contrast even to my previous Maglite with retrofitted LED. On the high power mode you can easily see the way ahead in pitch black - tested up a hill on a night walk the other day. I find the reduced power mode is plenty just for going out for an early morning run where there are no streetlamps.- Flexible - various power modes, including flashing (might be useful as a bike light maybe?) and SOS (?!) Next time I'm stranded on a dessert Island I'll be sure to use that one. In all seriousness it's probably useful if you're into mountaineering or something.- Battery life - I have used it on reduced power for probably~ 2-3 hours in total and about 1 hour on full power so far, and no sign of the batteries flagging.Cons- I found that it can switch itself between modes all by itself. My guess is, because the switching is done by turning power off and on again quickly, that a slightly loose contact might be enough to trigger the switch (e.g. if the batteries rattle in the compartment). I found that ensuring you turn the lens much further than needed - an extra half turn or so - is enough to prevent this. Just enough of a nuisance to drop a star for me.- As with other Maglites, the claim is that rotating the lens focuses the beam. Since LEDs are already very directional, this doesn't really achieve anything. It's not a drawback, as there's nothing wrong with the focus in my view, but it's not an advantage as stated either.SummaryI would recommend this torch and am only dropping the one star as Maglite makes exceptional quality torches and so this has just a little bit of room for improvement in the switching - otherwise it's perfect.

The batteries leaked in both my old mini maglites, so I decided to get a replacement, and the upgrade to the LED version seemed worthwhile. Amazon was by far the cheapest place for this (mine was £14.81 with free delivery) and arrived very promptly, well before the delivery estimate.Comparing the LED torch to my old version a few things are obvious. Firstly the LED version is significantly longer, 168mm vs 145mm (~7/8" longer for those who don't like metric units). The extra length is split between a longer body, and the torch head itself being significantly longer. The tail cap on the old version had an inset for clipping to a lanyard or key ring - this is gone on the LED version, not that I had personally used it. Checking out my old extras for the torch, despite being longer it still balances nicely in a nite-ize headband. The rubber end for adding coloured lenses also still fits, though seems ever so slightly looser.Torch operation seems a little fiddly to get the different flashing modes by rotating the head back and forth multiple times. At first I couldn't seem to get it to switch off from the flashing modes, but you get used to it quickly, and in reality I'll not normally use those. The automatic SOS flash mode (...---...) seems a nice addition though hopefully rarely needed - I guess the point is the way you switch modes means you couldn't actually flash a morse code of your own. If you want to be able to do that stick with the old halogen torch. It feels as rugged as my old maglite, but I'll reserve judgment on that until I've abused it for a few years and found if the mechanism for the various modes still works. Finally the free belt attachment - I reckon it was designed for the old torch, seems ever so slightly short to me. It is just a simple loop, no Velcro or studs involved, so must be threaded on to a belt rather than clipped over.

lately in the last few years i had been a flashlight hoarder collecting all kind of LED flashlights. last week i ordered this unit and got it yesterday.pros:-- the product finish quality is at the top(beautifully done)-- brightness: the 77 lumen printed on the wrapper seems to be misleading. it is closer to 120 or more-- the use of 2 standard AA batteries. plenty of it and cheaply available at most stores. unlike those cr123,14500, or 186500 which take a few weeks for the online order out of usa to arrive.-- a belt-able holster. a cheap one but better than nothing.CONS:-- the multifunction switch on the head for twisting is a junk technology that does not work more often than it does.i wonder how a US quality made product end-up with such a bad function into this product. maybe MAG is not what i used to think anymore after seeing this multifunction switch on a MAG product. i would have given it the most stars this website allowed if it were to offer simple on/off switch that work reliably.-- another miss that i can not believe it came from MAG is the focusing of the light does not work. in any way i twist the head the light seems to be in flood mode all the time, might as well omit focus beam out from the product info would be much more accurate.UPDATE: 9/9/2012 this flashlight has given me a big hassle in the last few days. twisting and turning the head part to just get it to turn on/of will not do the job. often i keep rotating the head counter-clockwise until the head part drop out from the body part and yet it does not turn on and sometime if i get it turn on and trying to turn it off by twisting and turning it clockwise. it will not turn off until the head part is tighten-up and can no longer be turn any more.

Well, here I am wring a review of a flashlight, giving you the idea that I have too much free time on my hands.But. This is a great flashlight. Not too big and not too little, although I was a little bit surprised about how big it was (they were) when I got it in the mail. But no free lunch. You want a bright light, which this is, in a fairly small package that you can carry around, then you need the bigger size for the batteries. It is VERY bright and in the dark if you flash it in the distance it works just like a big, powerful flashlight. Great. And about carrying it, fit comes with a very niche case for the belt. I live in Thailand and feed and help dogs in the night so people don't pay me too much attention and so I can hug the dogs.I put the flashlight in my mouth and use my two hands to help the dogs, for example checking for ticks in their ears. It is so bright. Speaking of that, I had to HUNT on the Internet for how to adjust the brightness. Here it is. Twist it open once for super bright, twist it closed and then open again quickly for not so bright (the dogs like this one better), and do it again and again for two other modes, SOS and flash on and off I think it is, but I never use them.If you would like to help us with the dogs, please visit DogAidThailand on Facebook. Sorry about asking for help, but we sure could use it. Enjoy this flashlight. I have a red and a black one (I put tape on the end--not the end end but toward the end of the flashlight where you put the batteries in) so it does not hurt my mouth)and I am going to try to get the blue one the next time someone flies to Thailand.

I think these LED lights are great. They provide exceptional light, as compared to standard bulbs. I can light up things nearly all the way across an acre of land, and can totally flood closer areas with bright light. It is amazing that such lighting power comes out of such a small unit. I can't imagine needing the larger size for general use around a house or modest-sized property. Also, the light is very white, not yellow like traditional bulbs. To me, the whiteness of these LED bulbs is much more appealing, and is easier on the eyes.Mine has been lightly used, so I do not know how well the bulb will peform once it begins to burn out (if it does). But,I will gladly replace the bulb or buy another one of these lights if that ever becomes a problem. They work that well. The metal housing is tough as nails, and it's small enough to go anywhere. The only complaint I have is the different light setting that are activated by turning the light on/off repeatedly. For example, if you turn the light on, then off, and back on quickly, it goes to a dimmer setting. Do it again, and it goes to a flashing setting. This can be annoying when you just want some light quickly, but accidentally twist the top when trying to use the unit.Other than that, I love this LED flashlight, and strongly prefer it over normal bulbed lights of similar size.

I remember my first Maglite, what a beauty. Such a sleek hardbody, with just a touch of curves, those were the days. With her big, bright eye and willingness to be turned on, it only took a couple of AA's to keep her happy, sigh. Back in the summer of '79 we traveled together, worked together and really bonded, telling each other we'd be together forever.I've been with many other since, up to and including Big Bertha, the 5 D cell model and they're always there for me.This is the new version of that first love and I've got to say, it's a spunky little trollop. It's much the same, except that her eye is even brighter and she doesn't ask for those AA's as often. One night when we were all alone together, she showed me a couple of new tricks. She screamed "Turn me on twice, quickly" and the sensual look in her eye let me know she had reduced power and could go on like this almost forever. Then she said, "I want you to do it three times in a row" and what a shock that was. She started an energetic blinking that had me quivering right down to my toes!Needless to say, I do love this young one even more than the original, nothing sags and no crows feet. But all of my Maglite's have always been there for me and some guys are always looking for one that's younger or will stay turned on longer.

This is my third LED Maglite. My family and friends keep sneaking off with them because they're so useful and bright. I keep my LED Maglite in my messenger bag at all times. I like to be prepared, and this flashlight is very compact. The flashlight casing is 100% aluminum. It definitely feels solid, and can survive a nasty drop or two... or six... or twenty. The lens is slightly recessed and is plastic, but it hasn't cracked on me yet. The LED itself isn't replaceable like other non-LED Maglite bulbs - but LEDs last thousands of hours longer than traditional bulbs. I wouldn't worry about needing to replace it. If there's a problem, Maglite provides a limited lifetime warranty. The beam is surprisingly powerful.I've been able to see things more than 150 feet away with ease with this little flashlight. I haven't had a need/opportunity to test it at longer distances, but it can allegedly cast light up to about 300 feet. There are also four modes - high-power beam, low-power beam, strobe, and SOS. I haven't really needed the last two modes, but I find myself switching between high and low-power on a regular basis, depending on what I'm doing.Bottom Line:-Extremely durable.-Extremely bright, especially considering it's small size.-Four different modes.-Limited Lifetime Warranty.

This is a fantastic flashlight. I think it's actually a better choice for around the house than the expensive super-bright "tactical" types. The bright setting on this one is plenty bright, and the low setting is there if you want it. The battery life is 10 hours on the high setting and 30 hours on the low setting. The super-bright flashlights run through batteries in just a few hours and/or require weird battery types. That's why this one is perfect - plenty bright, great battery life, rugged, it's just going to work when you pull it out of the drawer even if the battery is a little low. Do watch out for battery leakage which will wreck it.You switch modes by turning it off and on quickly,so it's possible to change modes accidentally which can be confusing. I don't have a problem with it, but after 1 minute in my toddlers hand's, it was in blink mode. The Amazon product info for some of the colors is mixed up, blending in info from other Maglite AAs. Maglite could help us out here with clearly different names for the different AA models. Anyway, this model: has a hole in the tail for a string, has 4 modes (high, low, blink, SOS), does not have a spare bulb in the tail. It's more expensive than the incandescent AA, but cheaper than the "pro" AA.

I can't understand why people have issues with this flashlight??If you don't understand LED technology then I can see why people might think it's faulty as the batteries start to run out of juice.Using Zinc carbon batteries or rechargeables is NOT a good idea, yet people still insist on doing so and then complain when the thing has problems! The basic problem being that most people see "AA battery" in the shops and think they're all the same!! Never wondered why the same brand comes in two different coloured packs? What people don't understand is that only Alkaline batteries can hold full voltage under load.Anyway...... Great little flashlight, I have the "nite ize" head strap for this and use it a lot around the house/garden/garage.Batteries last several days of constant 24 hour use, compared to just 8(ish) hours for the standard bulb version.Great to keep in the car too, although I actually have the 2D LED maglite in my glove box, it could also be used in self defence in extreme circumstances without getting into the sort of trouble "Darren Day" experienced here in the UK.It's very directional, it's like having your own hollywood search light on a misty evening :D

This tiny MagLite is a fantastic addition to my car's glove box. It's easily as bright as I expected it to be, and I like being able to select different modes. The full power is nice when you absolutely need all the light this little light can muster (which is a lot) but if all you need is to see a bit of trail in front of you at night walking through the park while taking Fido for a walk, the 25% power extends the battery life a ton while still getting the job done.I deducted one star because I don't think there's much of a need for the flashing light mode or the SOS mode, and the way you change modes (turning the head from on to off and back on again quickly) is imprecise and doesn't always change the mode, leaving you sitting there turning your light on and off like a doofus.Overall, it is the fantastic quality and durability you expect from MagLite, and a powerhouse of a little 2 AA cell light. The included carrier is handy, and the only drawback is the mode changing process. I'd reccommend this to anyone. Fantastic product.

I bought this LED maglite for work. The holster works perfectly so I have this light at my side whenever I need it. I work in an auto repair shop and it's so handy to have this light whenever I need to light up something whether in the engine compartment or under the dash. Much more convenient to use than a full-sized flashlight (I used to use a Makita flashlight, but this is much more useable and convenient.) Good battery life as I've been using it for well over a month with the same batteries in it. I may try using some Sanyo Eneloops to see if there is a falloff in light output; if not, that would be the way to go.*** UPDATE ***Eneloops work fine in this flashlight and is able to deliver the current needed to keep it bright. However, after just over 3 years of ownership, it seems the twist switch is going bad as it sometimes is a bit flaky. Sometimes it will be bright, the next time it's dim, but if you turn it off and then on again, it works fine. Hopefully, Maglite's "lifetime" warranty will still apply.

I've been carrying MagLites for a number of years and have been glad to have them. This new generation of LED lights have all the great characteristics of the originals with the incandescent bulbs, but with the reliability and lower current drain of the LED. The unit is all heavy aluminum and is strong enough to run over with your car and live. It has a high setting and a low. In addition it has a flash mode and another that flashes SOS in Morse code. The high setting will light deer at almost 100 yards away in one of my fields. I often use the low for cloe up to avoid being dazzled by the high.It uses two common AA batteries for power and mine need replacement only every few months. Of course,if you use it more often you will go through more batteries. It doesn't have provision to use rechargeables.I would highly recommend this flashlight to anyone who has need of this type. I learned a long time ago that a little extra cash now for a quality product will pay back many times over later on.

I finally got around to trying to rehab several of my old flashlights. I had a MiniMag I was going to order a new LED for but figured out it would cost almost as much as a new one so I just ordered this and tossed the old one. With the LED it is way better than the old Mini. It lights up my back yard or the inside of a large church when the lights are off. I assume battery life will be ok but I won't assume water resistance and I have not put it to the test so I only gave 3 stars. My old MagLites were virtually waterproof and would stay lit under a couple feet of water. Hopefully this is the same. LED tech has done a lot for the flashlight industry and the old Mini doesn't come close to this new one.MagLite was always a very good product - I used these and Streetlight in the fire service with no issues ever - and this remains so. It's not as bright or piercing as my Fenix LD22 but it was also about $40 cheaper then the Fenix. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one of these if I needed one.

I now have 4 LED torches - this one and 3 LED Lensers (2 A5's and a P7). Even the tiniest of them, the A5, which is not much bigger than my little finger and runs off a single AA battery is brighter even than my a D cell Maglite. The 2 AA LED Maglite is incomparable to the old bulb version and massively more powerful even than the 2 D cell (bulb). In fact I think it's just as bright as the Lenser P7 which surprised me. The build quality is decent but not really in the same league as the P7 which is a much chunkier, hardier beast, but at less than half the price I am not complaining. In fact, unless you really need a Pro level torch like the P7 I'd not bother and buy this Maglite instead becauseyou get as much light and most of the build quality for half the price plus some potentially useful features like the automatic flash SOS option which could be useful for walkers who find themselves in difficulty.
