OK, you are in the market to buy a new flashlight and are sick and tired of all the cheapies you have purchased over the years that break when dropped, cease to turn on because of a bad switch or even require heavy, expensive lantern type batteries that never seem to last as long as you think they should. Well, simply put, buy this flashlight! It is just as well built as described and should last a lifetime. You can drop it from three feet and walk away with a functioning flashlight. Reminds me of the all metal ones from when I was a kid that lasted forever, only this one is made even better.Confused by the number of lumens like me? I've saw lumen outputs range from 27 to over 500 when doing my flashlight research.I have no way of comparing all of those outputs but the168 lumen, 2 D-cell version Magliite I purchased from Amazon seems to be just the right amount of light for long range but low and wide enough for walking your dog. Can't decide between the 2 D-cell or the 3 D-cell? This really took me awhile to decide on but I think I made the right choice. The 2-cell is hefty but manageable for kids and women yet sturdy, powerful and compact enough to satisfy any man who does not need to have it function as a club. Here are the likes:The adjustable rotating beam size which goes from concentrated spot to very wide halo type beam which can light up a whole yard or sidewalk. I never had that feature before and I actually use it every time I go outside in the dark by simply rotating the bezel which can move in either direction. The fact that it is an economical LED as in it uses ten percent of the power compared to an ordinary bulb. Do you think your old non-LED flashlight would last for seven hours at full brightness like this one? And when you finally need new batteries they are easy to purchase and inexpensive. The solid feel and functionality of the on/off button which allows you to flash the light for just a quick burst or to signal if you need help by depressing slightly and releasing. For always on without holding just depress it until it clicks and it will stay in fixed on mode. And last but not least it is American made... yes really.Downsides?None so far. I saw that a few reviewers said the batteries were hard to remove or leaked. Well, I hate to tell you this but it's the fault of the batteries and not the flashlight. Use reputable brands and not junk market ones.If I encounter any negatives over time as that is the real judge, I'll update my review. Conclusion: Wait for the best Amazon price and Buy IT!

After stopping on the side of the highway at night to help someone who'd just had a vehicular mishap, it occurred to me later that stopping to help a random stranger at night could potentially be risky in some cases. Equally so, it might be risky to be the person who had to pull over and, say, change a tire. With that in mind, I decided to get an upgrade to the small Maglite penlight I'd had in my glovebox til then. This is the light I chose as a replacement. Here's why you should get it:- Maglite has a great reputation for a good reason- Very very bright- LED bulb, much brighter and more efficient than the last generation of Maglites- Doesn't get super hot in use like some competing brands(such as Streamlite)- It's supposed to be water resistant(I haven't tested this, but it seals very tightly and contains a rubber o-ring. I believe it would be waterproof in the majority of likely use cases)- Solid aluminum constructionThat brightness really is quite pleasing; its not like some older big flashlights where you see the light output and feel disappointment at how little light such a big light puts out. You can adjust the focus on the light by twisting the lens end.The switch has a very nice on-off click, very positive so you know just by feel that you activated the switch. No silly gimmicks like variable brightness or strobe mode, which can be confusing. This is a light for emergencies, you don't want to have to muck about with things like that. This light really has such an amazing feel in the hand! Light knurling where you'd hold it, so it doesn't slip out of your hand if it's wet, but not so aggressive as to cut into your hand. Very solid and reassuring. 2 D-cell batteries is the perfect amount of weight, it is not fatiguing to carry around, but it enough to feel good in the hand. If you went to help some less-than-well-intentioned stranger and were forced into a self-defense situation, you could give 'em a whack with this and 1), the light wouldn't break, and 2), the other person's head probably would. Better to carry around a well-made light than an actual weapon, it isn't for attacking people with, but I'd definitely rather have this in my hand in a tight spot than a penlight or worse, just my phone as a flashlight. One final point: from my own experience, the big C and D-cell batteries seem to hold up better sitting in a cold glovebox than the little AA and AAA batteries do.It's a great light, and fits perfectly in the glovebox. Highly recommended

I love this thing. As long as I can remember, my dad has kept every vehicle in the family stocked with one of these. When I first started driving and he was walking me through the car, he gets to this flashlight and tells me it's one of the most important emergency features in the car.Let's start with the obvious: It's bright. Like, really bright. It will light up the room, the road, the entire car. It's got a powerful beam and it means business. Now let's get to the part that kinda freaked me out when it was explained to me. It makes for a great defense. You can blind someone if you need an extra second or to make them stop advancing. This sucker is definitely bright enough to make someone pause. It's also heavy, but not so heavy it's unwieldy. In short, it makes for a great club. As a teenager, I didn't want to think about that. And for the most part, I didn't. The flashlight's there when I need it, you check the batteries when you change the registration in the glove box, NBD.So why did I buy a new one? Like I said, I've had one of these in my car for a long time, so why another? Well, three weeks ago, my dog takes up the habit of going nuts at 3 AM. I get up, walk the house, don't find anything, but it's still not a comfortable feeling to walk the house at night, waiting in the dark for the next light to come on. So before I go back to bed, I brave the garage and grab the Maglite from my car. The next night, she goes nuts and I grab the Maglite before I do my walk.Totally different experience. I'm not sneaking around my own house, scared to turn on a light in case there really is someone there. I have a beam powerful enough to be a low-powered lightsaber that lights up every room and every corner without needing the lightswitch. I can see EVERYTHING. And if someone had been there, I've got a couple pounds of "don't mess with me" in my hands to defend myself and my cowardly dog.So I bought a new flashlight for the car, to replace the one I stole for my nightstand. And I'm planning on buying another one soon, any time a friend moves into a house on her own.

This is a seriously powerful flashlight, but...You knew the but was coming. There's one strange part to it that I don't like. I should say we bought this for our 11 year old son. He does a lot of camping in the summer and is always needing a flashlight for something. A few weeks ago, our house is well within the city limits, but we still get a few critters in our yard. One of neighbors built an old shed years ago and never got around to putting any foundation under it. It sits on cinderblocks. I let our dogs out to use the bathroom. Our little dachshund started barking like crazy. This flashlight was the only one I saw. So I turned it on and headed out. The light is very bright and has a good coverage range as well, but there's a black dot in the middle of the light. I shouldn't say "black dot" since that's vague. It's more like a circle in the middle of the light that you can't see. As I walked towards our dog, I kept the light aimed in front of me. I couldn't see the shed at all due to this black area. Then I heard something running. Moved the light slightly and could see the shed fine, but now couldn't see beside the shed. Long story short, it was a groundhog. I continued having this problem with this flashlight, but it doesn't seem to bother our son so I'll just go back to using my Maglite which is the basic, standard one that is less than half the size of this one.I almost went with five stars, but my wife also said she's noticed the black area in the lighted area. It's very good on batteries. We've had it for about a half a year now. The batteries have yet to need to be changed. I would say it's used a moderate amount of time. I know our son has taken it camping at least 5 times, but don't know how much he uses it.I would still recommend it despite that dead area I'm seeing in its light, but only if you can stand having that one black area in your light. It probably wouldn't be so noticeable if it wasn't right in the middle of the lighted area which is most likely what you're trying to look at.

The 3 D-cell LED Maglite in digital camo finish is a great flashlight. Workmanship and material quality is outstanding for a budget D-cell flashlight (the flashlight is made in the USA). The design is well conceived, well executed and intuitive. The digital camo design -- it looks pixelated -- is very cool looking and appears to be wear resistant; this is an attractive flashlight and the product photo does not do it justice.Although the outdated packaging suggested that my flashlight was a previous (2nd) generation version, the flashlight is actually the latest (3rd) generation as can be determined by the Cree XP-E LED mounted on a green PCB and clearly labeled "484".The upgraded LED gives the flashlight a throw of 364 meters at 131 lumens according to newer Maglite packaging. With three good D-cell alkalines, battery life should be about 79 hours according to the updated packaging (tested under ANSI rules). That's well over three days of continuous usage. The flashlight is built solidly and is a formidable club when filled with three alkaline batteries. The price is very reasonable for such a high quality flashlight. In fact, the price is lower than many Chinese-made products of lower quality.Getting the milled aluminum end cap on the flashlight can be tricky because the interior spring is very strong. Maglite installed such a strong string in order to keep the heavy batteries in place so that the flashlight doesn't flicker off through the bumps that occur under normal use.The attractive Maglite 3-D Cell LED flashlight in the camo finish is an outstanding product at a great price.

I've owned a mag-lite of just about every size for at least 20 years. They're tough, powerful, and lets face it the ability to focus and un-focus the light is what makes them the go-to for just about anyone that needs a reliable flashlight. Problem always was the bulbs would burn out, and if you accidentally turned it on it would die pretty quickly. This new LED mag-lite is every bit the mag-lite I've always known, except it's insanely bright and the battery's last insane amounts of time. How bright? Well I don't have the optical instruments to be able to accurately compare. But I do have a coleman LED rechargeable spotlight that I'm quite fond of, and while the beam isn't quite as wide as that one (2" wide lens,vs 3 leds and a 6" lens), it will project every bit as far.The light is typical LED bluish (super white?), which does cast shadows differently than a conventional bulb. I've not really had a problem but your mileage may vary. I've handled my friends streamlight LED flashlight, and while that's a very nice light I can't see why it costs so much. I suppose it has a size and weight advantage. But this is every bit as bright, and cheap. Still has that heavy, significant, could use as a blunt object weapon-feel mag-lites have always had too. Plus made in america, and serviceable, and comes with a lifetime warranty. I bought the red one and the annodizing has yet to show any scratches or blemishes and looks quite attractive.

The real deal… these LED Maglite flashlights are just the best I have seen and or used. I have four, perhaps five of the 3-4 cell older ones, and I am giving them to the kids and the local goodwill. These are so much better in brightness, and use of batteries, that the older ones are no longer worth putting batteries in. Maglite's have always been expensive, but if you need one or more they are the only one to trust for civilian jobs. Chores around the place at night and in the car, this is it, the real deal. I have two Camo ones and a silver gray one. I'm ordering another pair of black ones. The good news here is that a three cell will far outlast a six cell old one. More light, less weight, longer battery life, what's not to like about that? LED is the way to go, the bulbs Thomas Edison invented worked well for 100+ years, but it is time now, it would seem, for flashlights to move into the current age. My old Maglite's still work fine, from 5 to 20 years old. Would still use them, but for this new LED version. An improvement of such magnitude that it just renders the older ones a place on the antique shelf. In the life of the flashlight, I suppose the savings in D cells alone would pay for the upgrade, perhaps even more. Something to think about as well as the need for fewer spares on hand. As expected, just a very nice flashlight.

I absolutely love this flashlight! It has a powerful light which is adjustable for how wide you want the circle of light. Now let get to the part about it's self defense uses...I am 55 year old disabled person with limited movement and other ailments which I won't get into. My wife and I were being harrased by a 22 year neighbor, who was obviously drunk or under the influence of some drugs. Anyways, the harrassment started as verbal,it quickly became physical with the young man attacking me in my own home! You put me in some kind of WWE wrestling hold, broke my ring finger (which is still crooked now) and proceed to beat me. I had the Mag-light Flashlignt in my hand (luckily because my ring finger of my left was broken).I proceed to hit my neighbor several times in the head with the flashlight & he droped like a sack of potatoes! He was out for a few seconds, but he was so drunk and /or under the influence of something, that he didn't feel a thing! Anyways, our neighbor was arrested for assault and will probably spend months in jail. Not bad for a 55 year old man, defending his wife and self! Anyways, I love this flashlight itmis obviously sturdy and besides providing a great light, it is a pretty darn good self weapon! Thanks, Mag-Light!

These lights are just right. They have a great beam pattern when focused and out throw all my other flashlights except for my Fenix TK70 (expected). There are no circuit boards (modes) to fail over time and 80 hours life since it's a direct drive eliminating circuit board inefficiency when in use and a well selected LED that allows the drain of the batteries to be extremely efficient. It is nice white color light rather than that greenish or blueish tint we see a lot of now days. White light is so logical for looking at all things in the dark. For long power outages I tail stand 2 of these in opposite ends of my living room and I have enough light to read a book and enjoy myself for 80 hours!Camping weekends I take one of these 3d led Maglites and a smaller less intense light for smaller applications which is the perfect combo. its a really comfortable thing to know your flashlight will be intensely bright the whole weekend even if you forgot to shut it off and it ran it the whole weekend long 24 hours a day! I did battery run down tests with one of my Maglite 3D LEDs and I got the full 80 hours of bright light and then another 30 hours of usable less bright light there after with quality alkalines. These are a must have for everyone.

I received this order at noon today or just before noon to be exact.I was greatly surprised due to the speed considering that this is an international delivery and only last Saturday night I tracked it and it is still in the US.I have not opened it yet I plan to check it out this evening. It looks very nice and while I have not tried it yet based on my previous Maglite flashlight I think this one would also be as excellent if not better since this one is LED and would be brighter than one with a krypton bulb.I give only four stars because the length is not 14.72 inches as specified when I measured it.Anyway I was really delighted by the speed of the delivery and hope this would always be so with Amazon considering the hefty price I paid.Well, after testing it and using for sometime I give it 5 stars because it has the brightness, the heft, toughness(I had dropped it unintentionally) and the good looks.I developed a fetish for flashlights as a result and would surely buy more of this kind in the future and even now considering to upgrade my 5d to LED.I would buy now if I had the funds but putting it off for now because of the hefty price especially the LED converter kit.

I have been using Maglites for years. My first one was given to me when I was about 6yrs old and I still have it. Solid as a rock and even better when I upgraded the original bulb in it.Now as for this Maglite, this is my newest one. The 3-cell flashlight is a big upgrade in terms of longevity on hours of light that can be used. It's super bright, and I can see a minimum of 300ft ahead of me. I can see much further, but that 300ft is where my vision really needs to matter. The Maglite isn't too heavy and is still well balanced with one-handed use. It works well tucked up against my shoulder or stuffed in a crevice when I can't hold it for whatever reason.I also made a magnet holder device and it works perfectly with the metal body of my new Maglite. As for water resistance, again this flashlight is second to none. I haven't gotten this one wet, but I know from past experience that I have nothing to worry about. The flashlight will survive the harshest storms and the worst dust bowls and just keep on trekking thru as if nothing ever happened. This is another Maglite that I will keep until I die!

Ok, I only paid $19.86 for this flashlight with free shipping. It is strongly built by a company known for long-term durability. Sometimes you have to wonder if Mag-lite is selling a flashlight that is also a club or a club that is also a flashlight. Hopefully it will be as durable as previous models I've owned. The first time I turned it on at night I was amazed at the light output--and flabbergasted by the big black hole in the center of the illumination. It took me a second to figure out that by turning the head that you could adjust the beam. The narrower the beam the less obvious the mysterious black hole. At the most narrow focus the black hole disappears.I use this light at night to check out our property before letting our three dogs out to do their business.More than once I have been alerted to critters (raccoons, possums, coyotes, rats, armadillos, etc.) by their beedy little eyes reflecting back at me. Avoiding a major battle before bedtime has been advantgeous to the dogs, the wildlife, and to my wife and I.

Yesterday, July 24 my home town experienced a severe tropical-like thunderstorm that caused electricity failure inside homes in the area for an hour. I immediately went for my Maglite flashlight as it has never failed me having relied on illumination from it for three years for various occurrences of darkness inside and out of my home. I used the Maglite LED 3-Cell D Flashlight for illumination last night in my kitchen area by placing it light side up (illuminated the ceiling of my kitchen)on the counter pointed at the kitchen ceiling tiles and it provided light that was less than regular lighting, but surely enough to see everything in the kitchen very well as if low lights were on all around the kitchen area.Maglite is a good workhorse unit and I have just now had an opportunity to test it thoroughly and it passes with flying colors. Batteries that I installed in the unit have lasted approximately 3 years, I highly recommend this unit it will not fail you in an emergency or when needed...

It's like the old maglites, but brighter and more energy efficient. LED is the superior technology, and Mag-Lite is a great brand. The two together is exactly what I wanted for a heavy-duty flashlight. Emphasis on "heavy," as this thing weighs a good bit.If you don't care what color your flashlight is, make sure you check all the colors. Some of them are cheaper than others. The red one was cheapest for me, so I went for that. I also like a non-black maglite because then I can see it better in the dark, when I will need to be able to find it most.A lot of people will tell you to buy this or that cheapo LED light, because it has 750 lumens or 1200 lumens, but they forget that part of a flashlight is the amount of light it makes, and the other part is the optics/focusing ability of the light. Mag-Lite LED flashlights get a solid number of lumens, but what they also bring to the party is a focusing lens/mirror system that makes your light much, much more flexible in its application.

I've had the traditional bulb verion of this flashlight for years, and its still working great, but I needed another one for an upcoming camping trip so decided to upgrade to this newer LED version. It has that same look and feel as the classic, with solid heft and build. But the light discharged by the LED bulb is amazingly whiter and brighter than the traditional version - the dramatic improvement is a real real to upgrade in my opinion. I am going to assume that the battery life will be far better too, and I will update the review when I get a real world sense of that. One thing that is interesting is that I looked into "upgrade kits" to update my old one to a new LED bulb. But the difference in price between the kit and just buying an entirely new LED flashlight was only $6. I'm all for reusing and recycling, but for that little of a difference, it just didn't make sense to go the upgrade route. One additional item to note is that the flashlight does not come with batteries.
