I've owned MagLites all my life and have experimented with smaller LED torches, however just dont find that they feel as secure as the trusty olé MagLite! The Maglites are functional as they either take AAA, AA, C or D size batteries and luckily these batteries are readily available! These batteries especially the larger batteries add quiet a lot of weight to the torch alone and do make the torch much much heavier than anything else I own. However this weight is a quality that non other can reproduce! The aluminium that Mag entrust is of aircraft quality and I have had not one issue with corrosion or failure of the threads or body parts. The latest Mag I purchased is the 2D Incandescent in Gray, and the standard bulb was the first thing to be thrown (not even kept as a spare!) thats how bad the light output is. These were replaced with the NiteIze LED upgrade bulbs, the 1Watt as the main light and the poorer performance bulb as the spare in the tail cap. The Maglite now has slightly better performance, 'slightly being' whiter light with possibly 20% more distance but still suffers the black hole issue with the reflector as you adjust. The LED upgrade gives you about 3 times more battery life and is just a good all round upgrade compared to the incandescent bulb, I have even tried other bulbs that promise 'whiter' light to no avail! The torch still has the generic rubber switch, I wish Maglite would change this to a metal switch like on the tailcap's on a Led Lenser, the rubber eventually perishes and I have to constantly nourish it with silicone spray to stop it drying out. Otherwise the button assembly is bomb proof and I have never had any issues with it ever. The threads and fitting of the head (reflector) and the tail-cap, both have large rubber gaskets and very well machined threads. From factory there seems to be a 'bee spit's' worth of lubrication, so I wipe that off and put on a good quality PTFE based grease on the threads and some silicone spray on the gaskets to condition them. I find that there is a better water resistance created when I do this to my Mag's.Overall, the product is presented flawlessly. The Mag's anodizing (both exterior and interior on all parts) is beautiful and exterior kerneling is perfect. I wish that MagLite Industries would come out with optional accessories like a window breaker bezel or tail cap and some better optics that hug the bulb better that would reduce the 'black hole' issue, also a tempered glass / UV filtered bulb glass in the head. Some of these options or upgrades would make a Maglite more personalised and sentimental.Otherwise the Maglite is something that you buy once and just maintain it for years, keep it clean and serviceable and keep an eye on your batteries that they're not leaking and it will look after you when its needed!

Maglite have been around for over 35 years now and still going relatively strong. The use of LED bulbs in their torches is very welcome! However their late implementation of this technology has most probably meant that Maglite lost part of its market-share. The competiton is stiff, with booming Chinese manufacturers producing very bright and cheap Cree LED torches (Ultrafire, Trustfire .... imitations of the market leader in quality "Surefire") Yet there is no doubt that Maglite uses far superior quality aluminium. Manufacturers using even superior materials than Maglite sell for over twice the price. Now to the Maglite S3D016. This torch is enormous, measuring nearly 13 inches or 32cm in length, with 13cm grip circumference and weighing up to nearly 800 grams(batteries included)! So I guess you get the idea when I say "dual purpose" in the title. This makes for a great self defence torch light. So having one in your car, just in case, is not a bad idea. I do not want to promote or condone violence by any means, so let's call that great deterrent :)Please note that this is not the LED version, which can be found here :

It seems that there aren't any reviews for this size of Maglite - all reviews are for the 6D cell club... I mean torch. This is the 3D cell light and is significantly shorter bodied, making it much more practical for portable lighting purposes. Mine was bought as a replacement for my previous Maglite (a word to the wise; ALWAYS check your batteries are in good condition & change them at least every 12 months if the flashlight doesn't get used often. Leaking batteries will kill a Maglite stone dead). As an everyday torch it's hard to beat. Sturdy and bright, with an adjustable beam this is pretty much all you'll need. Are there brighter lights on the market?Yes; but you can get LED Maglites for a similar price and LED upgrades for existing Maglite users. Are there better made flashlights? Perhaps, but I haven't found one yet...

Amazing value. I think this was the best price anywhere, shipped from Germany and received in 3 days. Genuine, and with a 10 year guarantee (not that you’ll need it). I bought this 3 ‘D’ Battery version to replace my 31 year old 2 ‘D’ Battery version that served me exceptionally well until the Duracell batteries leaked inside it due to a year of no use (always check the batteries regularly, I’ve learned the hard way that they either swell and can’t be removed or leak and destroy your torch). Anyway the new one is brilliant (as expected by the brand) but I can highly recommend upgrading it by swapping the bulb for an LED one. What an amazing transformation, literally blinding! You won’t believe how much better it is with an LED bulb!

Compared to modern high output LED lights the reliable old Maglite hasn't aged well. The output from the incandescent bulb isn't great and the batteries run down pretty quickly. The reason I got this, though, was to put in my car. It's plenty bright for poking around in the dark and if you have any kind of emergencies. Plus with its size and weight it makes a convenient weapon, should the need arise. If you're looking for something with high output and long runtime look elsewhere. If you're like me and already have 2 or 3 of these in the house and just want an everyday beater of a flashlight, you can't beat the Maglite.

The flashlight itself is wonderful - big and heavy. However, there was a "jack" next to the on / off button. I don't think it affects the use, but it felt a bit sour. In the ad there were 98 lumens but when the lamp comes, it turns out to be 45 lumens. Fixed it with lamp replacement (300 lumens cree / joint). SUMMARY: If you think it's okay but a product that can have "a little scratches in the paint" and is prepared and think it's fun to threaten the stuff, then this is a good solution. Otherwise not. A plus for the transportation which was exemplary. I'll probably return ... Cancer. R

Maglite's are the best built flashlights around. Always have been but it's not the brightest kid on the block. If you want a strong well build flashlight that will last a lifetime you can't beat maglite. They are waterproof in normal use and will stand up to just about any kind of abuse they might get even in the toughest of environments. About the only way to kill a maglite is to use cheap Chinese batteries that leak. About the only flashlight that is better is the Maglite LED.

I don't know, I may be sold on the whole Maglite mystique but I am very happy with this unit. I suspect at least one other person is very happy with it as well. This being a replacement for a stolen flashlight from my car. I have had a few reasons to call customer support for various flashlights made by Maglite. They have been very good about returns and replacement of damaged product. I have purchased many Maglite products as gifts. I highly recommend Maglite products.

This as with all the other Maglite products I have bought over the last 30+ years this works great.I like the white light in the LED, better than the yellowish cast that conventional incandescent bulbs give off. This will last longer from what I have been told about LEDs.Very fast shipping from the seller. This is great to see an "American Company" compete in the market place with which I hope is an all parts made in the USA.

Great flashlight. bought a mount kit aswell and mounted the flashlight in my truck. MAGLITES are almost indestructable. dropped my dads mag into lake michigan a few years back doing some salmon fishing off the pier. It bounced off the concrete from about 5 feet and bounced right into the lake, light still on. came back the next day and some guy was pulling it out. when he got it to the surface the light was still on.

A bad battery ruined my favorite red Maglite. Disaster when you are looking for red so you can find your flashlight because the black certainly doesnt stand out. I was searching diligently locally for a red one with no luck, but of course Amazon had it. Now I have my RED Maglite and all is right with the world again. By the way, I love Mags because even if I drop them or the horse steps on them they still work.

I absolutely love Maglites, and have had one in my home ever since I was a boy. They're sturdy, hearty, long lasting, and don't guzzle the amps out of the 3 D-cell batteries it requires. This one was a replacement to one that had a battery burst inside it, and the acids burned out the button's circuitry. Here's hoping this one last just as long. You won't be disappointed with this flashlight.

I paired this with a 700 lumen "head" I also purchased from amazon, works great, the pic doesnt do the blue justice, its a maglite, what can I say?I've personally bought one and put it through a torture test,1. Ran over it with a couple vehicles2. Froze it solid down to 20F for three days3. Dropped it off a 2 story bldg.4. caught it on fire.GReat light!

Wonderful quality!! Old batteries corroded the Maglite which my boyfriend has had for a very long time. This is exactly the one and it's wonderful. I have even dropped it on the cement from elbow height and it didn't flinch (Shhhh!). LED's bother my eyes so I love this incandescent light which can be focused from flood-like light to a spot light. Great buy!

Cannot remember how many MAGLights I purchased through the years, but I've bought 2 this year alone! These flashlights have never failed me. The aluminum construction is solid and it's extremely easy to adjust the beam diameter (by rotating the head). Recommend purchasing the ASXX367 Accessory Pack for the black rubberized head protector "anti-roll device."
