I had been 'humming and hawing' over getting these for ages as I had gotten into the habit of replacing all of my kitchen gadgets, but I decided against it as the simple glass (and somewhat dirt-cheap and recycled) salt and pepper grinders/mills I had been using were functioning perfectly, but this all changed last week when one of them broke. Having already done my 'research' and settled on getting these Kuhn Rikon ones, I gleefully decided to order one of the red ones to see what it was like.As always, it arrived super-quickly thanks to Amazon Prime, so I excitedly opened the package to see what the grinder was like, so without further ado, let's get on with the review!>>>>WHAT'S IN THE BOX?Er...What box? If you're expecting these to arrive in some fancy retail packaging, you're in for a bit of a let-down. My one arrived in one of Amazon's jiffy bags wrapped in a cellophane bag and with a carboard tag tied to it with an elastic band. I guess in terms of plastic pollution this is a good thing, eh?>>>>FIRST IMPRESSIONS?It's a little difficult to give a first impression on something which has just got a single purpose, but in terms of build quality and the quality of the grinder mechanism, it was love at first sight.>>>>FILL 'ER UP!As this comes with nothing much in the way of instructions, I was initially confused as to how to fill it with salt. There's nothing in the way of a bit that unscrews as is normally the case with salt/pepper mills, so it was with some delight that I pulled open the 'chute' on the side of the grinder and realised that this was how to fill it up! Within seconds I had a box of sea salt crystals and was gleefully filling up the grinder.>>>>RATCHET AND CRANKOh. My. GOODNESS, these things are fun! In addition to how kooky they look, they're equally kooky to use. Instead of the usual twisting mechanism that 99% of salt & pepper mills have, the mechanism on these comprises of a lever which you push forwards and pull backwards that turns the grinder. You can adjust the coarseness of the salt/pepper by turning the dial in the recess at the bottom of the gadget and then throw the lever forwards and backwards. The amount of salt/pepper that comes out while enthusiastically throwing the lever is impressive and the effort required to do so is minimal.>>>>SUMMING UPThese are absolutely fantastic salt/pepper/spice grinders with a great, kooky design and bold looks, which are surprisingly fun and tactile to use. I can't vouch for their longevity yet so the jury's still out, but I have no reason to believe that they're not going to last. There's one thing for sure though - you bring these out during a dinner party or when friends are around, and they're going to be a talking point.

this was going to be good as I had seen reviews elsewhere plus I have other Kuhn Rikon gadgets and whatnots that have served me well over the years, well most of them. I have terrible problems grasping, keeping hold of stuff, always dropping everything on the floor it seems, having arthitic hands and wrists. With swollen joints you need stuff you can hang on to. This is one such product. The Ratchet system is a doddle, so easy, and I seem to get more ground pepper quickly than with my previous modern whizzkid of a grinder. The ceramic grinder part seems the same as was in my previous set so how long it will wear my be some time. My old grinder did not pack up because of the grinder element but the fact that it fell to pieces with so much use.I have not given this 5 stars because it is made of plastic and if I am clumsy enough to drop it, fear that it will break, with luck it should bounce a few times before doing so. I bought the red one, not because I particularly like this shade of read but because being RED it means I can locate it quickly, and with that in mind I leave the grinder with its knob standing erect. It has no cover for the bottom of the grinder so just make sure that whereever you plonk it down has a suitable surface.

Excellent product, effectively and easily grinds salt or pepper. Particularly easy to use if you have small or arthritic hands that make using the twist-turn grinders difficult to use. Easy to fill via pull-out spout. Had this for over a year now and it still seems very sturdy. Very pleased with this product.

Have had my eye on this for a long time, and wanted it in black. First saw it on QVC, but black version is always out of stock (only available in red). Saw one on eBay, so bought it. Very happy with my purchase. Easy to fill, and the grinding mechanism works a dream. A great, quality piece of kit. Thank you.

This is my third one of these grinders.... they are just so good! Every other one I've tried get blocked very quickly and are very difficult to clean. This is just so easy to load (drop front drawer) and is even easier to use! Great for black peppercorns, sea salt, dried chilli. I love it!

This grinder is so easy to use, I love it, it’s easy to fill via the door on the side, it’s easy to adjust the coarseness of the pepper via the dial on the bottom, and even on the fineness setting it is easy to grind with the ratchet lever on the top. What’s to fault?

Absolutely excellent product, easy to use, easy to re-fill, different grinding grades - really good for people who struggle to turn a normal grinder. Will be purchasing another one for salt when my Salt Grinder bites the dust.

Love these! Have went through many salt and pepper mills and you get what you pay for. Considered Le Creuset but after reading reviews decided on these while on offer. Look good, quality and hold a good quantity too.

A great addition to my kitchen. Easy to fill and great to use. I’ve put a mix of spices in which I use regularly when I’m roasting veg. It’s really easy to use and I’ll buy another for a different blend of herbs

Yes great as I am unable to twist as my old grinder is too stiff, this is just a back and forward motion which is fine. I also like the adjustment for course or fine so very pleased

It doesn't look the best being plastic but what a great mechanism, this will grind very hard himalayan salt exactly as you'd like it. Simple design but well thought out.

So easy to use. The best salt and pepper mills we have ever had. Beats electric ones by far. Would highly recommend.
