The Health and Safety Executive published a document HSG57 which gives very specific guidance on how to ensure workplace seating is safe and suitable for everyone. They give this advice regarding footrests: Any worker who cannot easily place their feet flat on the ground, when using the seat adjusted to the correct working height, needs a footrest. This should be large enough to allow for foot movement. Adjustable footrests of a selection of heights are preferred. Free-standing footrests should not be so light that they move accidentally. When assembled this Kensington Solesaver footrest is 983 grams - not what you'd describe as excessively light, but also not dramatically heavy.Fortunately it doesn't move underfoot because it contacts the floor with four half-round rubber feet each with a circumference of 3cm - these grip both hard floors and carpet.I think this footrest complies with the sizing guidance in HSG57, being large enough to allow for foot movement. At its maximum depth you have 34cm of surface to rest your feet on and a maximum width of 35cm. Practically speaking this means you feel able to move your feet around quite a bit while you sit at your desk and don't feel confined to a particular position. The Solesaver can be adjusted to three different heights, or you might describe this as three different angles - the front edge is always 4.5cm high - and by changing the way that the bar holding the two back feet is plugged in to the main unit you get an angle of 10, 15 or 20 degrees, which equates to a back edge of 10cm, 12cm or 14.5cm.As I say, the Solesaver is made of two main pieces of plastic - the footplate and the adjustable bar. It has a usefully textured pattern on the top surface to grip your shoes or bare feet, and the underside is made strong by having a raised square grid which is practical but not particularly nice to look at. Of course you don't look at the underside when you use it so that doesn't matter. My only negative comment is that the bar that plugs into the main unit is pretty much silent at the lowest height setting, but at the two higher settings it creaks audibly when you move your feet around. This could easily be remedied by either gluing it in place, which seems a little unwise, or maybe applying some oil, which also comes with some risks and might not even work. In a busy office you're not going to hear this noise, and indeed your footrest might not creak like mine, but in a silent office you might hear it.In summary this is a well made footrest, it's usefully adjustable, nice and big, and makes sitting at my desk more comfortable so I'm very happy with it.The Solesaver is supplied in a sensibly sized cardboard box and the instructions are a good size and easy to understand. Unfortunately the height adjustable bar is wrapped in bubblewrap and while this is only 7 grams it is a piece of single-use plastic that could easily have been avoided.

When you open the box, there were two pieces of paper inside - one with multiple hands printed within another, and another sheet showing very simple instructions on assembly – unfortunately too simple. There are two settings you can change - the height and the tilt. The height is supposed to match your handspan, and you measure it using the handprints. According to this, you need the highest setting if you’re only 5'7”, so I'm not convinced this is an accurate scale. Having worked out the height setting you need, you then need to work out how to set it; I searched for videos on youtube. Eventually I realised that the nuts and bolts in the middle of the sides at the bottom were the means of adjustment.I had great difficulty getting my hands in to do the adjustment, as it’s a very confined space, and I had to ask my daughter to help as her hands are a lot smaller than mine (not that mine are that big for a man).It took her about 15 minutes of work (and a few expletives) to get both sets of nuts and bolts to the right setting. Having done this, I realised that there wasn’t much difference between the min and max heights, so I'm not sure it was worth the hassle. The tilt action is locked/unlocked using the foot pedal on the front, so this can move without you intending it to (contrast with the pain needed to adjust the height). The pad on top of the footrest adds to the comfort, though it's not actually fixed to the footrest - it almost 'slots' on top but doesn't actually fix. This shouldn't be too much of an issue with day to day use, but got in the way a little bit during the assembly process. The footrest itself is quite bulky and would be a good addition to a deeper desk, but is quite comfortable to use.Overall, it provides good support when you’re using it, but it really should be easier to assemble.

I was impressed by the sheer size of this. Plenty of room to move your feet around. Fits under any normal size desk with room to spare. I was baffled by the assembly instructions, which are int he form of the ubiquitous three-step diagram. There is a hand chart - presumably this correlates to your foot size. I worked out that the aim was to adjust the footrest so that the relevant matching colour informs you when you have the rest at just the right height for your specifications. It took a while for it to dawn that one is meant to unscrew the bolts - and mind the rubber 'rawlplugs' underneath them - all of which fell out with a clatter. I then re-screwed the bolts back on,having pulled it out the two sections so the right colour appears as the marker. I could not understand how this worked but I am sure someone with a smaller hand than me would have had a higher footrest, to make up for the presumed lesser height. Thing is, I am small boned (narrow wrist and ankle; smallish feet for my taller-than-average-height) yet I have long legs, so should it not actually be slightly lower? Oh well, if you have a mathematical bent, you can do the calculations adjust it to a tee, or just experiment until it feels right for you.I have been suffering from a lower back ache so I was interested to see if this would help it, as I have suspected my office chair might be the cause, because my feet don't touch the ground properly as it has a backwards tilt (designed to be a lounge chair). After a week, it is too early to tell, but I am optimistic this will improve my posture at my desk and alleviate the nagging pain, by the act of raising my legs. We all know the comfort of resting one's feet on a bar.Yet another fabulous good quality product from Kensington.

The Kensington adjustable ergonomic footrest is I found the ideal solution for ensuring good posture and a comfortable seating position when working at my desk at home (or at work of course!). Alongside my ergonomic chair it has fulfilled an important part of my health and safety requirements in my home office, contributing to meeting the Display Screen Equipment (DSE) requirements.Of particular benefit is the adjustability of the footrest, both vertically in height and also with its 15 degree angle which allows enough flexibility to adjust to my needs. It has a neat smart fit guide to give you a starter for 10 in setting the height, by measuring the size of your hand and colour coding it (see photo),that then corresponds to the height markings on the footrest. It’s only a starting point as it really depends on how long your legs are! To adjust the height you need to loosen the two plastic knobs on either side (not too much though or the nut falls off on the other side...) and then pull up the footrest, which then reveals the colour coding, once you’ve chosen your height, just tighten accordingly. The angle adjustment took a bit of working out, as rather counter intuitively you press the pedal up from underneath to move it and down to lock it in place, but now I know how it works it’s fine and I found I could lock it in a variety of positions to meet my needs. The unit itself is robustly made. It’s a nice weight for stability and the rubber mat is removable for cleaning purposes. It also has rubber feet to prevent slipping on floor surfaces.Overall good product and worth the investment to ensure safe working at your home or office desk. Its 2 year guarantee means you can buy with confidence.

Not much to say, what you see is what you get. I have a great adjustable chair but something just didn't feel right having my feet flat on the ground. This footrest is a super bargain for the comfort it adds to your desk time.It basically has 3 adjustable settings. You can remove the piece that adjusts the height for lowest setting or you can move it to the back slow for amid setting. I alternatae between mid setting and removing the piece depending on how I'm tilting my chair. The only gripes I have but is that it's obviously made for footwear. I don't wear shoes indoors (I use this at home) because why on earth would you walk around wihtt your dirty shoes indoors.. I never understood that about UK /Ire :) So I kind of have to wear slippers which I don't normally wear but it's alright with just socks. Just not super comfortable. Also, the piece you remove to get lowest setting isn't exactly small so when you remove it's a bit of clutter.Anyhow I still give it 5/5 because I wasalready aware that it was meant for footwear and I think there's a version that is smooth with textile that cost more.As for durability, time will tell but who cares? It costs peanuts. I imagine as long as you don't kick it it'll last for years.I recommend this to ANYONE who sits at a desk frequently or infrequently. It's simply too cheap and great of a product to NOT purchase. In fact, I just had an idea. Found an old big textile mousepad that I taped onto it and voila. Comfort for you people in nations who don't wear shoes indoors :)

Firstly, my previous setup was having my feet rest on a flat little plastic step, like the sort you have to reach a high shelf. It is about eight inches high. This meant that my feet rested flat on it while my ankle was at 45 degrees. This puts strain on the joint and tendons and I was told by my podiatrist that I needed to change to something angled. Then this product came along, so I snapped it up.The design and aesthetics are pretty industrial/office, nothing fancy. The rubber surface is quite strong-smelling but this goes after a couple of days. Setup was easy, I followed the guide and adjusted my surroundings to make everything as comfortable as possible.I decided to lcok it in my favourite position rather than have it free-moving, which I found to be annoying. I've set it up so I have two settings for when I'm sitting up (work) or slouching (gaming). My unit has a small amount of creaking when I put my full weight on it (i.e. wriggling in my chair to get comfy) but in normal use it's silent.I no longer have the ache in my ankles after an hour or so, so clearly it's doing the job.£40 may seem like a lot for a footrest (something you could knock up from some bits of wood), but the adjustability, stability and build quality mean it's worth the money.Four foottastic stars.UPDATE: three months later this is still working perfectly, I hope to get at least a year out of it.

This Kensington SoleMate Plus Foot Rest looks and feels well made being mostly of rubber/plastic construction. Included in the pack is a quick start guide which uses the size of your hands as a guide to achieving the correct ergonomic setup. The leaflet also contains warranty registration and UK support details. The unit stands on non-slip rubber feet and features a knob at either end of it which you unscrew to adjust to the right height, adjustment is via a colour coded and the right adjustment is determined by the colour scale for your hand size.Once understood I found this system actually works quite well and once the knobs are locked into place they keep their position. You can also adjust the tilt of the platform and lock it via a foot operated catch - again, a handy feature which works well and the tilt angle is maintained once set.Other features I like are that the footplate dimensions are generous both in width and depth and the unit doesn't slide around or squeak - it feels strong and substantial. In my experience, there's no doubt this footrest does make prolonged periods at a PC more comfortable, obviously, you have to adjust other items such as your desk, keyboard and screen to the optimum position to get the most benefit. In summary, this foot rest, is well designed/constructed and feels as though it should last plus the price is reasonable - I like it a lot.

I’m reviewing the SoleSaver here, the cheapest product variant under one heading and not to be confused with the other ‘sole’/’soul’ puns that Kensington have employed for the more expensive versions. And I think the SoleSaver is probably all you need- the other options do appear to be more luxurious, but the SoleSaver does its job perfectly well. As a simple adjustable footstool to help your posture, arguably you don’t really need anything else.It may look a bit dull, to put it kindly, but if it’s going to be hidden under your desk all day does that really matter? And equally, adjusting it from one height to another height is a touch on the primitive side (but smart in its own way in my opinion)but with a couple of attempts at the height and position you’re very likely to find your ideal sitting position without too much fuss. It’s a well constructed, sturdy bit of plastic with rubber feet that provide excellent grip. The horizontal lines on the top give plenty of grip for normal shoes, and even for slippers. You don’t really realise how much of a difference one of these will make until you use one for a day and then think about how much comfier your legs feel. Highly recommended, both as a product type in general and this simple-but-effective SoleSaver one in particular.

I received the SoleMate Plus footrest, which enables height adjustment as well as the ability to change the angle of the platform for maximum comfort. It is a large item but fits comfortably under my desk; the large platform size means I can move my feet without needing to compromise. The footrest is fully assembled but you need to adjust two settings to suit your needs, which is easier said than done. Firstly, measure your hand to establish your colour, which you then use to adjust the height. This is the bit I found trickiest as the mechanism was stiff and didn’t want to move. Once at the correct height, two bolts are tightened to hold it securely in place. The other adjustment is the angle of the platform, which has a foot pedal to release or lock into place. I am leaving this unlocked to allow me to move my feet forwards and back whilst at my desk.Build quality is acceptable and, once adjusted, there should be no need to alter anything other than the angle, so the fact that adjustments are tricky doesn’t really matter in the long-term.I can already feel my posture improving and the strain has been eased from my lower back. It makes sitting at my desk a much more comfortable experience.

Kensington SoleMate Plus - Adjustable Ergonomic Foot Rest - Black (K52789WW)Our bodies aren't really designed for sitting for prolonged periods, so doing so can lead to a host of health problems. You may find a foot rest helpful if the fixed height work station or desk you use is too high for you and leaves your feet dangling off your seat. The foot rest will support the feet so your knees are just above your hips as well as tilting your feet towards you slightly. This is a nice large foot rest, so it supports the whole food and you can move your feet around across the surface. The surface is quite grippy, so your feet don't slip. There are rubber grips on the bottom so it does not slip even on shiny surfaces. The angle of tilt is fully adjustable on an arc.It is quite creaky - it makes a noise every time you move your feet around. And it is large (see the dimensions in the listing), so needs quite a bit of clearance under your desk. The instructions are barely comprehensible, consisting of diagrams that perhaps the person who drew them understood but I'm not sure I do!For sale at the time of writing this review at £31.50.

If you spend a lot of time at a desk, it’s very important that your posture is correct, otherwise enormous stress is putt on your back.A good, comfortable chair is essential, but so too is a sturdy footrest. The Kensington SoleMate plus Adjustable Ergonomic Foot Rest gives excellent support. It is bigger than I expected, with plenty of room for the feet. It is adjustable for height and for angle. Setting the angle is simple, just lift the lever on the front with your toes move the footplate to the required angle and press the lever back down.Setting the height, however, is not easy. The platform is kept in place by two bolts, which are loosened and tightened by two large plastic wing nuts; one on each side.To adjust the height you must loosen both bolts, slide the platform up, “click by click”, until the right height is reached and then re-tighten the bolts. This is difficult and time-consuming. Fortunately, this is a one-off task. However, having gone through the setup process, this is a very good footrest. I found I was sitting back in my chair with my back and thighs well supported.

The Kensington brand is still probably associated with the computer security lock system that bears it's name, by most people, but the company has been part of ACCO Brands – the office products manufacturer - for many years and produces quite a wide range different items these days. This Kensington SoleSaver foot rest is a clever design, consisting of a foot platform, an adjustable stand and four non-slip feet. The SoleSaver tilt angle is adjustable by correctly fitting stand so you can easily set the correct option for your personal comfort – three settings allow you to vary the angle at either 10, 15 or 20 degrees. This is a well-made foot rest that can help reduce the discomfort brought about by regularly sitting at a desk – or even in your armchair at home.Currently under fifteen pounds from Amazon this is a good value and nicely made product that is suitable for either home or office use. However many related items share the same Amazon product page and reviews for all are grouped together – check carefully for reviews referring to the one you are considering purchasing!

Very good quality if a little fiddly to initially set up.The only downside is the top falls off if you’re not careful. This sounds extreme but isn’t really as this is only an issue during the initial setup. You get some guidelines on height settings and a cardboard guide for height between thigh and desk/tray. My hands seem to not be the shape Kensington expected as I managed between my various fingers to apparently be 3 different settings - it’s just a guide really. To change height, loosen the two bolts and give a positive pull/push and then tighten - very easy.Compared to a competing product i’ve Tried, the ease at which you can set this to tilt or be fixed, by just flicking the switch at the front is superb. The other product requires a lot of effort on hands and knees to do the same. This also has fantastic rubber feet - they’re big and grippy - which means they won’t fall out and they keep the foot rest in place. All in all a really good foot rest that aside from a slight fiddle initially is very comfortable to use and robust.

The product arrived in a cardboard box with a page of instructions. These are almost entirely visual, I guess to avoid the hassle of having to translate them into a dozen different languages. I didn't find them very easy to understand, although with a bit of trial and error I got there eventually. The footrest is basically a flat grey plastic platform with legs and rubber feet. By adjusting the positioning of the legs you can tilt it at various angles. A so-called SmartFit chart purports to show the correct placement of the footrest's legs according to the size of your hands, a concept I am a bit dubious about. In any event, a bit of experimenting should reveal the best, most comfortable configuration for you.I've been using this footrest for about a month now and I do find it helps with my posture when working at the computer. The rubber feet are effective at stopping it slipping around. I am not sure how robust it will prove in the long term but I have had no problems with anything breaking so far. Four stars from me.

I have used the foot rest at my place of work. The foot rest arrives well packaged in a protective box. There is a set up guide which took me a few minutes to understand how this relates to the foot rest and its set-up. What you have is a setting to 1] adjust the foot rest height and then a 2] second setting to adjust the angle of the foot rest that your feet will rest at. This took me a few minutes to reconcile but then understood the settings. Perhaps a manufacturer video here on set-up would prove useful. I did note that the plastic mat on the foot rest smells 'plastiky' initially when first being put into use, this soon wore off. The rubber mat is non-slip and I found this in usage to be practical.I am over all pleased with the construction of the foot rest and the quality of the build and materials used. This will get used 5 days a week for around 46 weeks per year, so its a well used and appreciated. I note the manufacturer limited guarantee is for 2 years.
