Wow! I don't have much experience with macro, but wanted to try it out without spending too much money. So I found these Kenko AC close-up lenses on Amazon. I figured it should be similar to the Raynox DCR-150 (which get good reviews) as they are both achromatic close-up lenses with a similar diopter (5 for the Kenko vs 4.8 for the Raynox). For whatever reason, the Kenko 52mm AC No.5 model is the cheapest achromatic close-up lens available ( under $24 Canadian with free shipping from Japan)! I am using this with my Olympus 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R lens which has a 58mm filter thread so I am using a 58-52mm step down ring to attach it to my lens. It works fine with no vignetting at any focal length! As for the lens itself, it seems well made and is fairly heavy. As far as I can tell it doesn't have any lens coatings and it doesn't come with lens caps - just a vinyl pouch to store it in (but for $24 I am not complaining). It does have front 52mm filter threads. As for performance, this is my first attempt at macro, but it seems pretty good. It seems pretty sharp to me. It is difficult to focus as it has a very shallow depth of field with macro. With my 40-150mm lens I can get it to focus on an object that is about 15 cm to 19cm from the front of the lens. You can change the magnification by zooming the lens. At maximum 150mm zoom I can capture about 23 mm wide (as you can see in the photo of the ruler which is in cm). As my Olympus EM10 Mark ii has a micro-four thirds sensor which is about 17mm wide, the magnification is about 0.74 so it is not true 1:1 macro. It is very hard to hand hold at full zoom as just slight movements affect the focus. The picture of the ladybug is at maximum zoom 150mm (max magnification - the lady bug is pretty tiny). The last picture is a 100% crop from the picture of the ladybug to show the details captured - the depth of field is really shallow and this is at F11.
