This is by far the best RPG I have ever played (the original is a close second though)... and I've played Morrowind. It almost feels like an action-adventure, cause it's low on boring stats, focusing instead on an interesting story with characters that you actually care about. Instead of crawling around across endless valleys and plains, you jog through beautiful landscapes and setlements. The people you talk to are actually interesting and the dialogue is believable and personal, unlike Morrowind or Neverwinter Nights where you can only select the same old drawn-out descriptions that no person would ever give you in a conversation or you’re told to “go to the south end of the room” (which islike a few meters away). In Gothic at one point I was given a letter from someone by another person I knew, who handed it over saying: “I’m sorry I opened it, I was too curious… I didn’t really understand any of it, though.”I was amazed! Any other game would’ve just pulled something like “I have a letter for you from ***. Here it is.”While I enjoyed playing Morrowind, I didn’t find any location genuinely interesting, every time just another city with people to get assignments from. In Gothic the places really feel like somewhere that would be interesting to explore… and they’re all very different.Big things actually happen in Gothic from the second you start. I’ve seen people go to war, defend a castle under siege, try to negotiate peace… and lots of other things, but I don’t want to spoil it for you. I’ve played through quite a lot of Morrowind and the most I’ve done is get a job running errands. Neverwinter Nights I didn’t even play more than the demo cause I couldn’t stand the abysmal dialogue and I didn’t really like the controls either. The controls are another thing that work in favour of Gothic. It’s quite different from most games and it takes a little getting used to but when you do it’s excellent. The combat system is especially good. Instead of boring *click* - *click* - *click* (with 99% chance of not hitting anything) ad nauseam, you can actually control the swing of your blade through clever timing and use of the arrow keys.. and you have to time your blocks carefully as well… by far the most fun combat system I’ve come across.Of course, no game is perfect and this one is no exception. I wouldn’t say it’s too hard at the beginning - you just need to pick your battles wisely - but I do agree that the game becomes a bit too easy towards the end. It would also have been nice to have a little bit more freedom of choice when it comes to classes. In the original game you could train to be both a mage and a warrior but in this game it was either or… although there is one warrior class that can do a few spells. It's also not as big as Morrowind, but that can be considered a good thing because you spend less time just trying to get somewhere and besides... for all its scale Morrowind isn't half as epic as Gothic. There's so much more going on.What it lacks in scale and class-choice it more than makes up for in depth, character and style... a truly grand game.

My brother bought the first in the series a while ago and I was transfixed by it. I love RPGs and the original was one that ticked every box - good graphics (for the time, at least), huge world to explore, everything interactive, loads of AI characters, great fun, lots of sub quests; and best of all, you could choose what path to follow, be it magician or warrior. As a result, my brother and I were on tenterhooks waiting for the release of this game, and we were highly frustrated by the continuous delay of the release date. Once we finally got it, we settled down to play. The first thing that I noticed was the improvement in graphics, far smoother than the original. Not the greatest, sure, but still good. Secondly, I noticed that despite the blurb on the back of the packet advising you that you do not need to be familiar with the original game to enjoy this, it is clearly modelled on the first game and I think you will be at a disadvantage if you come into this without having played the original Gothic. The Zelda series, for example, are RPGs which you can play completely independent of one another, but you do need to know the first game to fully enjoy this.Overall, I really enjoyed this game. The world of Khorinis is far more interactive than in the first game as you can do far more (you can learn alchemy and smithing, for example), and there are far more sub quests. I have about 30 hours of gameplay on it, and I still have not completed all the subquests. However, there are a couple of disappointments. Firstly, the combat system has not been upgraded; you are still stuck with the same couple of combos from the first Gothic. Secondly, the game to begin with is quite boring as it does take a while for you to get good enough to do anything. And thirdly, whilst in the first game you could constantly chop and change your guild (I started off in the Guards, then moved into the Mercenaries and finally I became a Water Magician), there are only three guilds to choose from in this game (mercenary, fire magician or paladin) and you cannot change once you have made your choice, which you make very early in the game. Hence, specific subquests for magicians are only available to magicians, for example. However, despite this, I still thoroughly enjoyed the game. The ending is a slight let-down as it is quite clear that it is just an intermediary between Gothic and the soon-to-be-released Gothic III, and the end boss isn't even the hardest character you fight in the game. But, do not let my slight nitpicking put you off - this game is hugely enjoyable, especially if you have played the original Gothic (not least because you get the chance to go back to the Prison Colony that is the setting for the first game), and it is highly diverting.I awarded it 4 stars overall because I think the end is a bit too anticlimactic and also because of the unfortunate rigidity of the Guild system, but in terms of fun this is definitely 5 stars - if you do buy this game, then be prepared to sacrifice a lot of your life to it because the game play is highly addictive.

Just a quick few words on this as I really have to get back to playing it immediately! Certainly the most immersive and realistic RPG on the market today. Beats Morrowind into second place as the NPC's in this have a realistic schedule - ie:they go to sleep, go to the pub, work etc - you can sleep in beds, cook your own food, make your own potions, forge your own weapons, get a job etc. The graphics generally may not be as pretty as Morrowind, but the textures out in the wilderness, ambient sounds and truly breathtaking panoramic views and sky/stars/day/night cycle are equal to if not better than those in Morrowind. Just make sure you have a decent video card with 64 but preferably 128 MB RAM on it.The one downside in my opinion is the voice acting though. For some bizzarre reason they decided to use either heavy southern drawls or pulled some guys out East Compton/the Bronx and it sort of sounds slightly out of place. However, you get used to it after a while and sometimes its quite amusing actually, so its no real problem. On the upside, absolutely ALL the dialogue in the entire game is SPOKEN and theres lots of it! Much better than trawling through reams of dull text (Morrowind). So if you're deciding on Gothic II or Morrowind, I would go for Gothic II. Although Morrowind is an excellent game in its own right, Gothic II just has a slight edge because of the ultra-realism and sheer joy that it brings! Buy it and kiss goodbye to your boring 'real life' for at least a month or two. (Oh go on, you know your pen-pushing desk-jockeying 9-5 lifestyle is boring as hell anyway!) Oh and one last thing - the combat system is BRILLIANT! stomps all over Morrowind or any other RPG and eats it for breakfast - much more skill involved as you actually get visibly better as you increase in skill in-game but also you as a player can improve your skill just by practicing a lot, so in theory you could defeat a pretty tough monster like a troll at a relatively low level if you are quick on your feet, learn how to block, and use some crafty tactics. And theres even a 'fight club' in the game! What more could you want!Right, I'm off!

This is so good! I am a big fan of role playing games having tried Arx Fatalis, Devine Divinity, Marrowind, Neverwinter Nights, and this is, one of the best role playing games, I have ever palyed! Want some good-points/bad-points??? Hey you! Here you are!....+ Lovely world that will remain lovely, even after the graphics are out of date. (Gothic 1 still has a beutifull world, despite its 1999 graphics, its just good map design.)+ Excellent npc interaction system, Listen to npc's talk to each other in the taverns, let npc's take you to your destination, choose if you want to be pollite or rude, you get a lot of freedom in what you want to say. (the communication system is like fallout or monkey island 1+2)+ Really good enemy AI,monsters often pose a threatening stance to scare you away, wolves howl for other wolves to gang up on you, Some enemy's may stop chasing you if they encounter somthing they prefere more. IE rats and dead flesh, Wolves and sheep.+ Every single line of diolouge is spoken audio. No wonder there are 3 CD's!+ Extremely interactive world with the ability to cook food, chop wood, smelt weapons and mine ore, if you choose to do so.+ Numerous ways to achive the quests in the game. Great for replay value!+ A usable 1st person option this time round.+ Plot continues from the 1st gothic title.....+ .....but you don't need to have played gothic to understand it!+ Faster loading time than gothic 1......- ..... but it's still annoying waiting that long for maps to load.- Still has the clipping problems that Gothic 1 had. (To the same level as marrowind. It's slight but I consider jerking around if your walking on a fence a clipping problem)- Even with full reccomended specifications, you cannot achive full view distance with highest resolution.- Can be unforgiving if you don't use your common sence...- Ouch! How many times did I die?! Very hard, even for seasoned gamers.Although I do have to say that the bad points are very much minor things and did not distract from the game for me. Want a percentage? Hey you! Here you are!.... 92% (thats from me!)

Be warned, this is not a game for the feint hearted; starting is hard and everything you meet can be a real challenge for you in the beginning. But persevere, this is not a game that hands you hero status on a platter - you have to earn it and the rewards for your hard work are worth it.The game is graphically rich and while perhaps not as expansive in terms of landmass as say Morrowind, it manages to give a similar feel. The ability to move between interiors and exteriors without tedious loading of new sections also adds to the feel of a more interactive and real environment. This is further enhanced by the fact that when it gets dark people go to bed and they object if you start wandering round their house or looking in their property, also certain creatures are only seen during the hours of darkness/daylight.While the plot could be said to be fairly stereotypical it doesn't deprive you of enjoyment because of it, the enemies come in a reasonable variety and each have their own particular quirks in behaviour - it is advisable to pay attention to these so future encounters can go more easily. The controls are adequate, once you learn to use them they feel reasonably intuitive though the inventory system is cumbersome and can be awkward to use in the middle of crisis moments.I initially had some problems with the graphics but thanks to a responsive and helpful online community I was able to run the game without any difficulties and without rolling back my DirectX version to 8.1 or changing my graphic drivers to earlier versions.Overall this is an immensely enjoyable game that has enough replay value to try the different career paths and subsequent plots. If you like rpg games then I would no hesitation in highly recommending it.

There aren't a lot of games which are that fun to play. The morrowind series is probably one of the only other really decent Adventure, Role Playing Game around.Gothic 2 but JoWood Studios, is set in a Medieval landscape. You have a very high control over How the environment looks in detail wise. You can choose from a wide range of weapons and magical spells to guide you through those difficult battles!Unlike most games where you can easily defeat an opponent just by slashing it once or twice with a sword, Gothic 2 requires you to use plan how to win! Some monsters will require you to take down a lot of their HP by long-ranch projectiles since they will have a very high attack if they attack you.The game requires you to constantly be on the move during battle, nothing like just standing still and thinking you will win easily... no, no, no... You must constantly keep trying to evade attacks and flank them, so you have a higher chance of becoming the victor, rather than the monster.I won't go into how the story is, because it will only spoil it for you! All I can say is that this is another really great Adventure, Role Playing Game! You will never get tired of it, since each time you play there will always be something new for you to do!It is challenging, but then we need to be challenged otherwise we get bored easily. If you ever have around £20 - £40 available, and can't think of anything to buy. Then you should consider buying this! (If you haven't already).

This game is really an eyecatcher. Impressing with it amazing graphics, you will be glued in front of your computer. Fans of the first part(and of the genre) will def. love this one, though you will need a fast computer. A P3/AMD Athlon should be minimum for great fun.I played the german version ;-) 4 months ago and I loved it. It's sometimes difficult, especially in the beginning since your character is really weak. But once you learn the first magic, get proper equipment and learn the tricks during fights, the challenge will be different compared to the start of the game. With lots of different ways to solve this game *** as a magican, dragon-slayer, archer, town guard etc.*** it's very flexible, challenging, impressive and epic. It will get a classic, I PROMISE. The magic looks great, I can just recommend to learn as much as possible. The NPCs are realistic and have their very own schedule with different behavior. And: if you do something illegal during the night, you might be able to stay out of trouble ;).....It's very real!!

This game can be described as THE BEST I have played.Warning: once you start playing this then you may not want to get back to work or college and you should think about good excuses for your girlfriend..... Simply this game is amazing with the envirnoment it creates and literally takes you an another world. This world is full of adventure and you hold your own destiny and fight your way to your own salvage and those of man againest the orcs.....But this game will be incomplete to you if you haven't played the first part which actually creates the story and gothic 2 is advancement on it...also once you have played it do wait for the next part of this amazing sequeal in may.One tip for the newplayers from me is that keep saving the game whenever you come to a situation that gives you choice for what you want to do.....now hey dont waste any more time reading this review but get your hands on the game....good luck

I bought this game after hearing good things about it, I wasnt let down!.The graphics are good (although a fast p.c is needed to make the most of them) and the sound effects are great (ambient sounds birds singing, wolf howls and townsfolk chatting in the local taverns). The plot is the usual swords and dragons thing and the characters seem to have strange American accents? but dont let that put you off.I have been playing the game for a few days now and so far i'm enjoying it a lot and after a few false starts!(you will die a lot at the start) i'm really getting in to it.A lot has been said about this game having a few bugs in it but as i say been playing for a few days and had no problemsyet!,So if you like a good role playing game and enjoyed games like Morrowind The elder scrolls give this one a whirl?(and i belive its out on the cheap labels now so what you got to lose?).

This game is much like a good book - once begun it is very very difficult to stop playing. I played solidly in every spare moment I had for a week before I finished it.G2 is sufficiently difficult all the way through to keep you challenged. The storyline is traditional (with a few twists and turns), but good. The voice acting is a little samey, but still manages to beat most other games easily.Morrowind was good, but its sequels got tedious. This is MUCH better. I'm starting my second character choice now.Mwhahahahahaha!

This game is the first gothic I play so I can't compare it with the last game.I think this is a very good game and it has an exellent story. You doesn't only go on with your game but you can gain experience, armor and weapons as you go on.I like very much these game types so I liked the game very much. But if it had better graphics it could have been the best game I have ever played.I just say the game was very good and I think it would be a good choice to buy.

Simply amazing. I can't really add anything to all the good reviews this game has had, other than mention the fact that the add-on Night of the Raven addresses many of the flaws mentioned. I know a game has to be evaluated by its own merits, but Gothic2 is simply sooo good I had to mention it. Buy it; even with its shortcomings it will be a game to later fondly remember, and as I said, the add-on will make you feel obligated to repeat the experience.
