This is a very old game with the origins going back to Windows 95. It therefore shouldn't surprise anyone that the graphics are very blocky by today's standards even being restricted to 640x480. You might therefore think it's time to pass on this game and look at something else but on that count you'd be wrong. What saves this game is the huge support available from certain web sites (just search for it) to make it run quite stable on XP platforms. You can also add a huge number of extra scenarios too. However, if your current PC is fairly modern (64 bit dual core etc) then I'd strongly recommend acquiring an older 32 bit system (plus decent amount of RAM & half decent graphics card). If you don't have a spare system lying around then it's surprising what can be found in skips or the local landfill site! The 2nd recommendation is to print the manual and take time out to read it although astonishingly the manual is not even included with the budget release of the game (it can be downloaded from certain sites as suggested).Whilst the graphics may be limited, there's lots of fun to be had from seeing your opponents ships ripped apart from incoming shells, turrets disabled, fires raging from the superstructure and occasionally a lucky shot to the magazine with spectacular results (albeit nothing quite as dramatic as the Hood going down). A single well aimed salvo from the big ships can take out a destroyer with just one hit whilst the battleships can take a lot of punishment before you get to see them sinkHistorical realism seems very good too although, as is the point of games such as this, being able to change the outcome is the fun part.

I bought "Fighting Steel" when it first came out and thought it was a marvelous game then and it still is. This is a marvelous game to get into naval wargamin. It does have its quirks though in crashing and such but apart from this I would recommend it to anyone interested in this hobby.
