When this game was first released, it was hailed as something of a revolution. Four recreated cities that the player had total freedom to drive around as he/she saw fit. This freedom to venture, taking whatever path and driving style you liked, was something very different from all the linear predicatability of many games at that time.The graphics are pretty enough and the game is simple to pick up with the difficulty gradually increasing at a reasonable pace. This game and series is arguably the grandfather to the modern GTA games, but with significantly less violence and being rather more serious!The plot is good, loosely based on the old 70s movie of the same name.Indeed the opening cut scene is more or less straight out of that movie. You play an undercover cop who has to infiltrate a pretty rough mob, doing various different missions for them, while you work to bring them down. You have some freedom of which missions you want to do, often having to select a "path" to follow, which will take you on different missions, giving the game some decent reply value.The driving and physics are fun, you can knock over obstacles and flying down the hills of San Francisco is always fun! Pedestrians expertly dodge your car as it hurtles towards them, so no blood and gore GTA fans I'm afraid! The cops are somewhat homicidal, seemingly content to crash into your vehicle as hard and as often as it takes until they've "wrecked" your car but the chases are still good and quite exhilarating, even with the old AI, as you try to evade the cops, only to bump into them again later. There are also some fun little side missions to keep you entertained and these have a score board so you can compete with buddies.This game is mega cheap now, and it's a game every driving enthusiast should have played once in their life.
