Dark Messiah attemtps to merge semi RPG with FPS-style gameplay and successfully creates an new type of game. Most of my gaming time is taken up by my passion for Guild Wars, in fact most of my time is taken up by Guild Wars! It's about the only game that could have pulled me away from Battlefield 2, which I did play for quite a bit, but got drawn back to GW, which I have been playing solidly for over a year now, as well as run my Guild site and small community. You may think that GW and Battlefield 2 (and games of it's ilk) have nothing in common, and until now that would have been true. Let me introduce you to Dark Messiah - part of the Might and Magic series.I know nothing at all about the MM series so I won't go into that here, rather I'll just tell you about the Dark Messiah game itself. The game is in First Person perspective, one connection it has to other FPS games, although as it has no guns etc, it's not really a first person shooter, more of a first person melee or combat game. It's set in a fantasy world, where their advertising blurb tells you don't play as a warrior, or a wizard or an assassin - play as them all! As you follow the exploits of Sareth in the single player storyline you will learn new skills and get new items/weapons which will enable you to become proficient in a specific area or jack-of-all-trades. It's a skill 'tree' if you like, where if you choose one particular branch, you may be weaker on another. The storyline itself gives you the role playing aspect, and what holds this up apart from other similar games is that it uses Valve's Source engine. For those of you who have played Halflife 2 will know how good that is - infact it's even better because it's an 'enhanced' version to boot. What this means is that the whole 'world' you play in will be very interactive, pick up barrels and throw them at enemies, move boxes around to get at hidden items and so on.In what basically amounts to a seperate game (but within the same scenario), there is also an online multiplayer aspect for up to 32 players. This is where it becomes more like an FPS game similar to BF2 etc (although without tanks and planes!). There are 5 classes to choose from: Warrior which is your basic soldier, fastest on the field and most powerful when it comes to dealing direct damage as well as taking it; Priestess can be considered the medic of the group with her healing and protective skills; Assassin with his ability to cloak (looks like the Predator!) and stealth attributes can be considered your covert ops specialist; Ranger can also use stealth and ranged attacks (sniper maybe?); and the wizard has been compared to artillery with area of effect attacks etc. The online aspect of the game has been developed independently of the single player game (by an English company!) so should be a good indication that it will play well not just look nice.Gameplay modes include your standard deathmatch and team deathmatch but also introduces the Crusader mode, where you start off in the middle map of five and depending on whether you win or lose, you will go either forwards or backwards onto the next map until you hopefully reach the enemies stronghold and conquer it to win. Another aspect of gameplay that is similar to BF2 is the use of various spawnpoints and the map on which to select them as well as change you class.During the campaigns you will earn new skills and become more powerful with better weapons etc, and these will be saved over all the maps until the campaign has finished, when it will be reset - sort of an xp save type of thing. Should you switch to another class mid-battle, you will start that class from scratch but will keep any skills learnt on subsequent changes. Skills that can be gained vary depending on the class but include things like better stealth, zoom attack when using a bow, shield blocking and so on.Technically, the game ran fine on my low/medium spec system, with both an ATI Radeon 128 Mb 9600 All-in-Wonder card, and now on my nVidia 128 Mb 6600GT, although the video setting will need to be low to medium unless you have a reasonably new card, this is especially important with the Texture setting which can be found in the Advanced section of the video settings. The game itself has fairly slow loading times, but nowhere near as bad as BF2, in fact I would say they aren't too bad at all. During gameplay I only came across one bug which happened during a cutscene so didn't affect the game at all. The game ran very smoothly on my mediocre system and is a joy to play - it is a genuinely refreshing take on the RPG/FPS scene. So, if you fancy a bit of swordplay (and be honest, which of you guys didn't have a sword and shield when they were kids!?) in an FPS setting, then this may be right up your street. One word of warning - as the graphics are so good, as well as the physics of the game, there is a lot of dismemberment and decapitation to be seen, as well as various methods of stabbings and impalements. If you're interested in this sort of blood and gore, check out the demo which is out now on Fileplanet and other good sources. The game is out now in standard and limited Collector's Editions.

Like many people it seems, I had immense problems with stability. However, one e-mail to Ubisoft support, and everything got sorted out. My PC was a little over minimum requirements, but not much, and I had regular crashes. Once I disconnected my broadband and turned off all background applications the game ran perfectly on medium graphics, sound etc. This is the first time I have actually had to switch everything off on the PC for a game, so I was a little surprised, but it did sort things out.As for single player gameplay, it's pleasantly good. Not quite perhaps fully balanced: mages at high levels are very powerful (once their mana is capable of regeneration at speed.I'd also suggest that lightning when cast with an adrenaline effect [targeted chain lightning which kills all non-bosses] may be a little too powerful, especially compared to other spells of a similar level); fighters are perhaps the best choice (although they are extremely vulnerable to poison, especially from zombies, and there is no spell available to cure that, just potions, which need to be carefully horded). Some bosses are very tough for fighters though, but many are optional fights anyway. The downsides are for stealth, which doesn't work very well in the single player game (the game is so linear in places that there is no chance to sneak at all) and archery (powerful, but only once you get used to the arc of an arrow. Probably best taken as a supplement for fighters). Both of the latter two options suffer slightly from the fact that whereas the fighter gets weapons dealing more damage as the game progresses, assassins and archers instead get weapons which cause low damage, but with special effects such as poisoning or freezing. These can be fun, but of limited utility against multiple enemies, especially as scripting sometimes means that the game is designed for multiple enemies to appear behind you as well as in front. The plot is generic and not especially exciting, although it works adequately for the game. To be honest, it could have been heavily fleshed out and could have been much more exciting (there are suggestions of illicit demon worship, corruption, alchemical experiments and all sorts of other buts and pieces). From this perspective the Necromancer level is very good: lots of books and carvings around to read explaining their background. Such a pity that wasn't carried through elsewhere. The plot carries you along, but I never really felt that I was immersed in the world, as one does in some other games (Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines springs to mind), and the one place where there is any element of choice seems lacking in that regard.

As I've never been a FPS player before, I was slightly nervous of starting something like this. However, the game sucked me right in and I'm glad for it.This game's biggest strength is its variety in combat. I opted for a mage build the first time I played through and I was pleasantly surprised to find that one of the most powerful weapons in the game is not a +5 vorpal sword. It's actually a rock. That's right. Any random rock lying around on the floor (+ telekinesis spell, ideally). I initially started off with garden spades, but I found that rocks tended to give the ooomph that I needed. Roll forward to the end game (Hard mode) and I was happily flinging bricks at the Big Bad and all was well.As has been mentioned in previous reviews, lots of emphasis is placed on being able to kick enemies off of ledges and into well-placed spikes etc etc. Rather than being a bad thing, I ignored the convenience of it all and loved this little mechanic. Besides, it's not as if the enemy AI lines up and waits to be kicked off of the cliff. They are pretty smart and scary critters in general and I had my backside handed to me very often. One drawback some give is that the game is very linear. It's obviously not Skyrim. However, I think that the game's still a well-paced action story and I spent MUCH more time squealing and hiding from Orcs than I did griping about the lack of exploration. Another advantage for me was that there's no experience points system for combat. There are 'skill' points awarded for quests and bosses, yes, but grinding is optional. Then again, the combat is so fun that I have never sneaked past the enemies yet.The storyline quality is highly subjective. I thought that it was adequate for the job and it meshed well with the gameplay. The Big Bad has an awesome voice actor too. Moreover, I really enjoyed the soundtrack and all of the sounds in the game. The music's incredibly atmospheric and is a pleasure to take in.One drawback to this game is that it's fairly short and can be completed within a few days. This is also subjective though as I immediately started anew with a different build and had equal enjoyment the second time around. Additionally, there could be some more variety in the enemies that appear in the game. Given the Lore of the series, I was hoping for some more interesting monsters to tangle with. Also, I did have a couple of catastrophic PC-crunching bugs in the game's release version. These were a pain, but updates fixed those, I'm pretty confident. Yes, there are of course other small graphical issues etc, however, the overall experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

Starting off I wasn't sure I was going to like this game - basically plays more or less like an FPS with some RPG elements (skills to choose between, a reasonable variety of different bits of equipment to find and use appropriately). Starting off with just some daggers and having some tough early fights before you really get the hang of things didn't help, but soon you get the hang of parrying and thrusting at the right times, and retreating to cover your flanks when attacked by multiple opponents. After a while it becomes second nature, and you can really appreciate something a bit new - as having to mainly focus on melee combat was a nice change from the virtually unlimited amounts of gun based FPS games, although spells and archery avoid this becoming too limiting, but it is more action filled and involving than most RPG tends to be.The graphics are excellent, but even more than that the levels/areas of the game have a lot of variety, and some of the vistas you come out to see are really impressive looking. I also found the big fights much more exhilarating than say HL2, especially when confronted with big monsters like cyclops (~4m high) at point blank range, rather than sniping with rockets from cover. The thing that really brought me into the game was the chase across the rooftops, which is really well designed as you can chase and jump and climb at full speed. The storyline is not massively original, but it is very well done - in particular Xana is an engaging character (and also a good way of guiding you through the levels without being too ham fisted about it). There are a few decisions to make during the plot, but they don't really affect much during the game itself, only the final cutscene really is changed (and then only part of it). The skill system gives some amount of flexibility in how you go about the game - essentially you can be a thief/fighter, mage/fighter, or specialist fighter, but it isn't particularly deep. Most of the levels have alternative ways of going about getting past each challenge, so although the storyline and your objectives are fairly linear, the levels don't feel quite so constrained as many games of the genre.I can really think of no major negatives for this game, except for the somewhat limited replay value - you might want to see each ending, or maybe going back and trying out a radically different skillset once or twice, but unless the multiplayer is worthwhile and still popular enough (I haven't tried it), it isn't something you are going to come back to very often. Given the current price I doubt that is much of an issue though.

Dark Messiah is an extremely fun action game. If you have played before any of the Might and Magic games, be prepared that this game is not a RPG though it has several RPG elements like skills and inventory. The game uses Source engine - the same that made Half-Life 2 one of the best games of all times (so far) and the game feels somewhat similar to Half-Life 2, not Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, how many have compared it. Dark Messiah delivers pure action! What I love most in the game is the combat which is the best I have seen in any game so far. Player can kill the enemies in dozen ways including swordfighting, backstabbing with daggers, burning with direct damage spells, kick on spikes, freeze them and disintegrate into pieces, with Telekinesis spell grab them and send to the Moon, etc. In Dark Messiah during one game I was heavily using sword, bow and several direct damage spells at the same time, which makes the game so much fun. And there are enemies on whom certain attack works the best - for example, sword fighting against any melee enemies, archery against zombies. The storyline of Dark Messiah is rather simple - if you have watched the last amazing trailer, you already pretty much know what will happen there. There are several unexpected turns of events though that you might find very surprising - for an action game it fits perfectly. The graphics are really nice, as you could expect it from a game that uses Source engine. I was playing the game on medium settings and yet I was amazed by the beauty of dungeons (though a bit straightforward) and the detail the developers have put into them. The character models are well designed as well though it made me smile that one of the main characters Leanna wears a miniskirt, and sounds so totally naive girl! Meanwhile Xana is a real succub character, you will love her dialogues.Voice acting in the game is simply superb, I really cant add anything to it - it really feels that the voices were recorded by professional actors, like in Half-Life 2. The game soundtrack is amazing as well though I wish they used some themes a bit more - the same combat soundtrack in the end of the game really started to feel a little repetitive but that is a minor thing. While I was experiencing no tech problems with the game, I know some gamers have so I would strongly advise to install any patches up-to-date before trying the game, though I had absolutely no need for one. The game demo gives a good example what the game is about, even if it shows so little. Dark Messiah is one of the best games I have played so far.

To be honest, I always took a much greater interest in the multiplayer portion of Dark Messiah rather than its single player brethren. Developed by Kuju Entertainment, the company responsible for helping develop the EyeToy games for the PS2, the multiplayer mode for Call of Duty: Finest Hour, and Battalion Wars for the Nintendo Gamecube, the multiplayer mode of Dark Messiah encompasses a unique style of gameplay in a fantasy setting. The game splits between 2 factions, the Humans and the Undead. Each faction allows 5 playable classes, the Assassin, the Priestess, the Mage, the Archer, and the Warrior. The only difference between the Humans and the Undead is their physical appearance; otherwise, they are essentially the same. Now the question is, how does the multiplayer stack up?Pretty nicely, and I wont stop there.Despite some slight conflicts of class balance, the multiplayer portion of the game leads as an excellent and worthy contender of popular multiplayer first person shooters. To begin with, the Assassin is a very fast paced and fun-to-play class. In fact, all classes are extremely fun to play, and it will only get better as Kuju decides what should be done to help make the game even better. (And they do, their commitment to the Open Beta was extraordinary, as far as updates and forum responses go). The Warrior is a tanker lovers dream, being able to negate any spells and absorbing the most damage with its Reinforced Armor. Surprisingly, the Warriors attacks are powerful as well. The Priestess is most likely the main concern of many balance critics. With her instant self-heal ability and an armor buff that lowers any kind of damage, the Priestess can take on any class and win. I havent even mentioned the insane range of her Corrupt ability and the Bramble spell that slows ALL players to a crawl. Kuju Entertainment obviously decided that Priestesses should do more than just supporting other classes. The Mage is insanely powerful as well, but only in late levels. Finally, the Archer is a class that rewards those with practice; arrows not only take time to reach the target, but they also arc as well. However, 1 fully charged shot deals 56 damage; 2 shots will kill the player. In conclusion, the multiplayer portion of Dark Messiah is anything but the norm. It features a retrospective view of the modern first person shooter with 5 totally different playable classes. The game delivers tons of different tactical strategies, and will only get better as Kuju Entertainment continues to please its fans with updates and additions to the game.

I'm new to the Might and Magic world. I've never really noticed the games within the world until now so not an expert on the lore involved throughout the games but that didn't stop me from enjoying Dark Messiah.Plot: You are Sareth. A disciple of a mage named Phenrig with an uncertain past. You are tasked with finding a magical artefact called The Skull of Shadows. A little later in to your quest, you meet a woman called Leanna who then goes on to play a fairly large part in the rest of the game.It found the plot disappointing to be honest. Although you can see there is a great plot waiting to happen, you're only told the bare minimum of plot details. It has such a great foundation but failed to build on it.As there's still a basic role-playing game (RPG) background to the game, you can choose between a mage, rogue or warrior depending on your play style. While not giving you a huge amount to choose from, there's still enough for everyone.Graphics: Dark Messiah is a very pretty game. It's run on an enhanced version of the Source engine from Valve. From swimming through water to perching on a cliff, everything around you is incredibly detailed especially when you have the settings maxed out.Game play: Dark Messiah is a first person RPG. You level by completing objects rather then killing enemies through 12 levels. You then use your skill points from levelling to learn new spells and attacks.Nearly everything you can see is destructible and it's up to you to learn how you can use this to your advantage. This gives you the option to either go the usual way using the hack n slash method to get your enemies down or to use the environment to kill your enemies more tactically.Lifespan: For what the game could have been, I found it quite short. It took me around 15 hours to finish off but when I think about the extra depth I felt was needed in the plot section, they could of easily fleshed everything out that bit more and the game could of only been better.Although I personally didn't play with the multiplayer side of things, the option is there. You can battle with up to 32 players either as an assassin, warrior, priest, mage or archer. Other then if you want to take it online, there is no other replayability factor to Dark Messiah.Overall: Although not an amazing game, it's a solid one that's worth giving a go. If they had of fleshed it out a bit more then I would say play it now but seeing they haven't, only find some time for it if you have nothing else to play.

I have been able to play both the singleplayer demo and multiplayer beta extensively and not only is the singleplayer the most immersive and visceral melee combat I have ever played, but possibly the best use yet of the source engine.Physics are used effectively to give you an advantage in combat situations and quickly despatch foes, rather than rely on a possibly lengthy one on one combat. The joys involved in kicking an enemy to their death, be it into an abyss a fire or onto spikes could possibly not be entirely legal or moral, but they still raise a smile on my face every time they happen. As for multiplayer the beta was well balanced and each class was both fun and effective to play as.Experience points earnt through combat, capturing objectives, healing and other useful actions can be invested in gaining extra skills and abilities, or simply improving those you already have. They can instantly be reinvested as the whim takes you, switching points from the electrical tree to the fire tree as a mage for example. It's all about making sure you invest points wisely early on so you can level up at a sensible pace. But don't let the issues of having top level up when you join a server put you off. Within 20-30 minutes you can be level 5-6 easily with practice and the crusades allow you to level up over a series of maps for a long period of time, so join the right server and you should reach max level long before the crusade ends and points are reset. Don't worry if you join mid way through, it's always possible still to level up (the first level or 2 are achieved very quickly). As for the gameplay style it is rather like the battlefield series, with capture points/spawns dotted evenly over a map, with both teams aiming to take and hold the majority and drive the enemy back. the ability for assassins to take on the disguise of an enemy soldier or become invisible allows for captures behind the current frontline objectives to put the enemy on a backfoot, so games tend not to get too stagnant as there is always a way to advance. All in all this game is a must have purchase as far as I'm concerned, and coming from a gamer who previously claimed he despised all RPGs is saying something. It may not have the depth of WoW or the range of singleplayer missions as Oblivion, but what it does provide is a wonderful fantasy FPS with RPG elements and a new benchmark in melee combat along with a very solid and rewarding multiplayer experience.

I'm currently about 8-10 hours into the game, and really quite enjoying this. I've had precisely one crash during that time, and am otherwise running the game at maximum detail levels with the v1.2 patch. I was expecting much, much worse given the levels of complaints I'm seeing here, although I have opted not to convert the installation to a Steam title. Regardless, stability isn't a problem, although the level loading times are a little on the long side.At high detail levels, the visuals are really quite impressive (you'll need an nVidia 7000-series video card with 512mb of on-board memeory, though), with large, airy level designs and nicely detailed other characters - especially noticeable if you use 16x anisotropic filtering.Although this isn't an RPG title, there are a few pseudo-RPG elements where you can tailor your character's abilities, allowing you to boost your combat (strength, weapons techniques), magical (use of spells), or stealthy abilities (picking locks, walking quietly etc.).The storyline is pretty much your standard ancient-imprisoned-evil-guy-makes-a-comeback, and is nothing spectacular, but the heavy emphasis on the environment is. As you move around, you can bludgeon, stab, kick, shove, impale, electrocute, and burn your enemies. And there's a few more. Kicking someone into a fire sets them ablaze; firing lightning into water spreads the blast, you can pick up and throw things, and generally, mayhem rules when the fights start. Then there's the environmental traps to play with. It's difficult, though, and will keep you wondering what else you can try, and you generally don't feel that frustrated if you die since you can try something new next time. For the budget price, this is pretty good fun, and I recommend it.

Ok I've rated this game based on the demo at the moment it's just downloading via steam. I got the DVD home and it wouldn't even read, but there's a solution not just to this problem but also to the problems faced by people trying to get hold of the latest patch for the retail version ... for those of us with a high speed internet connection at least.1. Create a steam account and install steam.2. Click on the my games tab.3. Click the "activate a product on steam" button.4. Skip past the first couple of pages in the dialog that pops up and type in the serial code from the back of the game manual when prompted for the product code.5.Click next and follow the instructions.Steam will then download and install the latest version of the game. The reason this game freezes for some on highest detail settings is that the textures on those settings are too big to fit in to your graphics card all at once. As a result the game has to pause each time you move your head to load new textures in to the card (especially on larger scenes). This stuttering will be more marked on AGP based sysytems. Lower the texture size settings to medium for a 128mb graphics card (about the same quality as the highest setting in oblivion, slightly better with steam's graphical tweaks) or low for a 64mb or lower graphics card and you shouldn't have any problems (but don't quote me on that!).I managed to max out all other settings on the demo using my old ATI 9800 pro/AMD 2600+/1Gb RAM system and it ran flawlessly and looked superb.Though I'm looking forwards to seeing how it will run on my new nVidia 7600GT ;-) It should be better (I hope) even with nVidia's rubbish texture filtering and AA...!

A much anticipated game, having played the demo I was hooked. You will see that many people who purchased this game have had huge problems getting it to run. I am pleased (if not too smug) that for once I did not experience any technical problems at all: the game loaded and played with only 1 glitch. The combat system is different and quite fun, but it soon descends into frantic random button pushing without even the skill required of a console beat-em-up. The character development is fairly limited, because the skill trees are quite shallow. The plot is about as interesting as these hackneyed swords & sorcery games get. Most of the fun I had involved using the rope arrows (just like Thief)to get to otherwise inaccessible places to find the 'secret' areas. It is a pity that the game feels as if it was rushed out before it was properly finished, as there are significant bugs (which would require spoilers to explain, so I shan't).All things considered, it's another on-the-rails , by the numbers FPS, with just enough innovation and a few puzzles to make it a bit different. If you're prepared to take a chance that it's actually going to work on your rig, it's worth the discounted price it's now selling for.I haven't played the multiplayer, but the reports I've seen suggest that there are problems with the balance of class abilities, and the only way you will have any success is to be part of a clan with good team tactics.

In Dark Messiah, players will take the role of Sareth, who has been trained in magic and melee to eventually fight the titular character and save the land from his grubby clutches. In addition to fighter and spellcaster classes, players can also choose to be an assassin, and they'll unlock skills and equipment through combat.According to Ubisoft, gameplay takes place across twelve levels and involves over forty weapons, and contains a "deep and engaging fantasy storyline," with hints of plot twists and various surprises along the way. Tony Kee, Ubisoft VP of Marketing, boasts, "Dark Messiah of Might & Magic brings a new genre to gaming.Never before has the world seen a first-person action game set in a fantasy universe as compelling as the Might & Magic world. Not only will fans of the Might & Magic franchise be amazed by the direction we have gone with the game, but fans of the action genre will be blown away by the power of the Source Engine from Valve used in such an incredible and fantastical setting. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic will become the master of both worlds."Ubisoft also tells us that Dark Messiah will include a fully realized, class-based multiplayer mode for up to 32 players, from deathmatch to an intriguing "Evolution" mode in which the player will gain experience and new equipment across dynamic online campaigns.

I have experienced the fun of this game first hand after having completed the (admittedly short) demo, released earlier this month, many times now. This game really does look superb and cool in so many ways, I just hope that there is enough variation to the levels and storyline to keep things interesting throughout the whole game. The demo features an introductory level then a main challenge on a precarious cliff-face setting. Here you get skill points and can choose to specialise in fighting, stealth etc as in the full game. There are only 8 or so enemies here (each can be a challenge), but it is fun to kill them over in lots of different ways, by kicking over a cliff or onto spikes, setting off traps, backstabbing, setting on fire - there are numerous possibilities apart from the standard hack-n-slash.There are no race or aesthetic character choices avaialable, though. The game plays like a more linear, action-oriented version of Oblivion, with swimming, jumping and climbing of utmost importance. There are limited equipment choices but the focus of the RPG element seems to be the skill tree, which seems logical enough. The combat moves and effects, and physics, are particularly impressive. This is a promising game that could be great if it strengthens the equipment/character system and turns out to have more variation in gameplay.

After a 4 hour download i managed to get a demo of this and i can tell you now this game is amazing. The game world is extremely well detailed, in physics and graphics, but the real power of this game is how you play it.Any way you want. You can go in, swords swinging, and try to hack everyone to bits. You can use bows and spells to take out enimies at a distance. You can wait and set an ambush and kick enimies of a cliff when they try to catch you.You can find an alternate route and bypass enemies altogether.Or you can use the enviroment itself to assist you, like setting a barrel on fire and kicking it at your attacker. And if you choose the first option you won't be disappointed.Instead of the usual "click the button as fast as you can till the enemy stops moving" you have to time your attacks, move around, and think of ways to defeat them, while the enemy is doing the same. With all the different ways of going through the level and the advanced A.I. you will play this game over and over and never be bored. If i could give this 6 stars i would. Try the demo and i think you'd agree.

I've encountered one crash so far in this game, so I guess if you're unlucky with your choice of hardware that it can be a problem. But for me it's been great fun all the way. Anyone who bashes this game because it doesn't have enough RPG elements have just been misinformed. I love RPG games, but this is first of all an action game. It's actually a great action game. The best since when Duke Nuke'em 3d came out. Why? Because it has a good focus on thinking new when it comes to weapons...only this takes it much further when it comes to combat. You have lots and LOTS of ways to kill your enemies in this game..and that for me is a lot of fun. The story doesn't have to be GREAT when a game is THIS entertaining in its action.Just remember one thing..play it at HARD, not normal difficulty. Hard is..well at least to an experienced gamer, normal. It's not a perfect game, but when it's this fun to play..it really doesn't matter to me. It's also the first game that makes the wizards more aggressive and not just wizards who pulls back in a fight to throw his magic. I'm really impressed with this game.
