I absolutely love pastelmat. I am a primarily a pet portrait artist but I also paint wildlife and I like to achieve a realistic portrayal.I started painting with pastels on standard pastel papers but found that I was quite limited on how many layers could be applied before the tooth of the paper was full.I then came across pastelmat and thought I would give it a try. It took a bit of getting used to as it was so different than anything else I had used. Blending is easy after the first layer. The first layer can be blended in but it is harder work than the subsequent layers but once done it's easy. Adding fine detail too is a dream, especially when using pastel pencils. Erasing is not too difficult, but if the pastel has been blended in I found the best way was to loosen the area first with a brush. Some pigment may be left although this isn't a problem as new layers can be painted on the top.The best thing about pastelmat is that there is very little dust produced and a spray fixative is not necessary at all.I haven't tried it yet, but you can also block in with water, alcohol or turps. Also I wanted to clean a small piece that I used for experimenting, instead of using a new piece. So I ran it under the tap, scrubbed it with washing up liquid, rinsed off and let it dry. Perfect.

Absolutely love this paper. It's cheaper to buy the pads rather than the paper singly and I prefer the light blue paper to any other colour and is the one I mostly use (as in the attached photos of my drawings). I am also a real novice at painting. I taught myself to draw (with step-by-step guides) just over a year ago and when I got better decided to go a stage further and use a few basic watercolours to liven them up a bit more but was absolutely hopeless with them. I then went onto different types of pastels using different makes of pastel paper. This make of paper is definitely the best for me. The pastels I use go on so smoothly and are easy to erase with a putty eraser when you make a mistake (which I frequently do).I used a normal eraser once which permanently marked the paper so it is a real learning curve for me. Great paper though (and a little heavier than the Canson Mi-Teintes paper).Edit: I actually used the 18cm x 24cm size on the two pictures but bought both types.

This paper is held in high esteem by many pastel artists, so I felt obliged to shell out and buy some to see what all the fuss was about!Firstly, the paper is thick and heavy. A really nice weight to work with, giving confidence as you make your strike on the page. The surface itself has a very light sanded texture, and this accepts the pastel very well. It seems to allow layer after layer with no problem, allowing colours to look fresh and bright on top of others, while blending, though more of an effort than on some papers, is controlled and effective. The colours in this set (#1) are very nice. Not too bright or vivid, allowing a great natural tone as a starting point for your work.Be mindful that this is single sided paper,so there’s no chance for a second attempt on the other side of the sheet! So yes, it’s expensive, and I won’t be using it for practice or sketching, but I will be putting this to good use for my more serious efforts. I’d recommend you try some.

My first time trying out pastel pencils, preferred medium is watercolour. I like this mat. Immediately, the mat starts grabbing anything that will stick to it. Especially fluff! Keep your work area very clean. The bits are hard to get off once gripped onto the surface.I wanted the colour in the middle of the pad, of course. I pulled that page out but the top layers fell off. So I put what I was not using into a plastic pouch wallet type thing. This keeps the fluff bunnies off the mat too. The boards are a good thickness and quality. I did notice a couple of very small blemishes, like tiny white bubbles that had popped and dried on each sheet. I don’t think that anyone but the artist would notice them. They are so small they get lost inside the work. Light pressure and lots of layers seem to be giving me very good results. I have no other experience with papers or mats so cant say anything on how it compares with other grounds.

I have read so many reviews stating that this is simply one of the best papers to use for pastel and after having used it I completely agree. Those little pads you get free with a set of pastels or the generic pastel paper have nothing on this. As a first time pastel user I can say there is a huge difference in the type and quality of paper you use. I had a very first try on the free pad I got with a set of pastels and it looked awful. I couldn't blend very well or layer and I was starting to fear the money I'd spent on the fancy pastel pencils was going to be wasted. Then I tried this stunning paper. If you want your pastels to go on smoothly, blend well and be able to build up multiple layers, then do not scrimp on your paper. Use this!Note - I did not buy from Amazon though, I shopped around and got it for about half the price direct from an art supply shop. Well worth the money!

I was given a sheet of this paper to try by a friend, I use coloured pencils when drawing and was happy working on Bristol board or Canford black, so using a coloured paper was a new experience let alone one with all that tooth!I draw wild animals and need to have some kind of outlines in place (placement of features etc) it is very unforgiving for incorrect pencil makes an eraser of pretty redundant. But, for the layers and layers of pencil to achieve fur, wow......it eats coloured pencils.... In a good and bad way..... You can revisit details and top them up.... Again and again, but I got through over half of a polychromas white on one drawing......I will be purchasing my own paper after the trial......I still loved it.

A fantastic paper for pastels, colour pencil and watercolour! This has a very light sandpaper texture to it which grabs the pencil beautifully. This is a work in progress piece demonstrating a technique I use, as you can see the paper holds watercolour brilliantly with no warping, I use this as my base layer before working in details with colour pencils. Multiple layers go down with ease with no degredation the the papers surface, even after watercolour. Another great thing about this paper is its ability to allow adding light on top of dark which can be a problem with other, smoother papers. A fabulous paper to work with all round, I would highly recommend this!

Having just received a delivery of my first ever pastel pencils I initially tried them on multi media paper and struggled to get the pastel to stick to it, I was limited to layering. So whilst I initially thought that Pastelmat was expensive I ordered some to try.And WOW absolutely blown away by it. The Pastelmat holds the pastel and you get much less dust than multi media paper. You can lay layer upon layer of pastel down and the pastels just seem to stick to the paper. This was only my second ever pastel drawing, but I think I am totally sold on the medium and I am now ordering more of this product. You have to try it if you draw with pastels.

This is my first time using this paper having only just started drawing with pastels. I was frustrated at not being able to get detail or layer without the texture of the paper showing on pastel paper so I thought I would try pastel Mat. It's a bit pricey for me but having done two drawings on it now, I won't hesitate to buy again. The paper is card like and robust. The pastels glide on and blend wonderfully once a few light layers are placed on it. Detail is easy to achieve too. It comes in lots of lovely colours too. I've not tried polychromos on it yet but the pan pastels and Carbothello pencils are a joy to use on this.

Love this paper. I had been using a smaller pad in assorted colours, and actually ordered this larger, all white one by accident. However, i have decided that i do like it after all. Depends on what you're drawing.... If i was using a lot of white, i'd prefer a coloured pad. The surface is fantastic for pastel use. I use both soft pastels and pastel pencils. I have no problem blending with fingers, there is no abrasion to the skin at all and dust isn't particularly a problem compared to pastel paper. If in doubt i'd recommend trying it, you may be pleasantly surprised at just how good this surface is.

I really should have read the measurements properly as these are quite small. Somewhere around A5 size. But still great.I have only used the Pastelmat board before so I was pleasantly surprised by the thickness of the sheets. Unfortunately one piece has a scratch on it but it's not the seller's fault and I am quite sure that Pan Pastels will cover it, just about. The dark colours are lovely and the one piece I have used was a joy, just like the Pastelmat board I have previously used. There's something about the surface that makes me want to paint. If you aren't using Pastelmat you are missing out.

Thought I'd give this paper a go as I've been experementing with pastels at life drawing class and the "normal" pastel paper is hard to make the pastels adhere. This pastelmat is great - it grabs the pigment (although this means you have to stick a lot more on) and the colours on it are very vivid (not always the best for body tones but actually workable). It is harder work to blend the colours on the surface but the results are very interesting. The pastels don't drop off the page and I have not needed to spray fixative on (yet - I may try it when I'm actually happy with the work).

Pastelmat was recommended to me by an artist friend, so I thought that I would give it a go. I'm very pleased that I did. There is a nice choice of colours & sizes. As a dedicated pastel artist I'm always looking for new ideas. I found the surface really good to work on, what I like about pastels is being able to build up layers of colour, and although the surface feels smoothish to the touch it actually holds several layers of colour therefore giving a good finish and depth. I would highly recommend this to other 'pastelists'.

Very good quality paper with a lovely fine tooth on it. It takes the pigment very well and makes blending easy. An absolute delight to work with. I was a bit sceptical at first because of the higher price tag, but it is worth it. I've previously bought a different pastel paper from an arts shop. A3 for £15.99 and the quality was awful. I've bought the A4 paper this time, but I probably will purchase the larger paper next. Also super fast delivery, which got delivered the following day and I am not a prime member! Fantastic :-)

I bought an A5 pad of this paper direct from Saa on a recommendation from a fellow artist friend. Not only is fabulous for pastel but great for my polychromos. Decided to get A4 size with different colours to the A5 pad. Arrived when expected. The downside in ordering paper pads from Amazon is they always arrive bent. I don't think it is the packing, but the pad is never flat. I always have to put a heavy object on top to flatten it. It gets very frustrating. Greater care should take place somewhere along the supply chain.!!!
