Hi.I own a canon eos 10D camera, with 28-80 and 70-210 lens.and to complete therange I needed a wide angle lens. Most canon Ef lens available are too expensiveBut I hve read that it is possible to convert a EFs 18-55 to fit the 10D.Hence the purchas of a Canon EF s 18-55mm f3.5-4.5 USM lens. The back of the lens protrudes beyond the mounting ring and prevents mounting the lens in anything other tham the 300D and the 20D camers. As the lens is plastic, and the lens mount is removable.I decided to have a go at removing the extension,4 phillips screws and two very small.removing the mounting ring enabled me to ascess the situation, and it seemed a fairly simple operation to remove the extension, usinga Deram abrasive wheel.making sure to cut right back to to the contact line.then cleaning the surface, and removing all rough edges.I reassembled the lens, then came the testing point. To try the lens in the Camera.IT WORKED!!.on all settings, taking some very good photographs. So I now have a complete range of lens's from 18mm to 210.all USM,to cover everything I need to take.I would be pleased to help anybody who wishes to go allong the same path.having now purched a small lathe, making the conversion easyer and more professional.WARNING THIS CONVERSION IS ONLY SUITABLE FOR THE 10D CAMERA.AND not SUITABLE FOR FULL FRAME 35mm ,AND OTHER DIGITAL CAMERS.TO DO SO WILL!!.DAMAGE THE CAMERA THE MIRROR OR LENS.Read full review...

After many years of use, my original 18-55 (non IS) had started to fall apart! I had heard that the new IS 18-55mm produced better results than the original, but I was rather surprised at just how good this lens is! I was all set to spend far more money than I did on an 'L' series lens (many times the cost of this one) and had visited a shop to try one out on my body (300d). 100 ASA and every aperture, distance and focal length I could shoot at, and off I went with over a hundred RAW images. The results were good, but I just couldn't justify the high price. For under £80 I just had to give the 18-55 USM IS a try - and I am very glad I did. I still had the pictures from the 'L' series lens on my computer, and direct comparison at 100% showed the difference to be very small, and in some cases not in favor of the 'L' series!! CA on this lens is much lower than the old 18-55,and much of the time was hard to spot. The auto-focus is quick and most of the time is spot on. The IS works very well, giving a couple of extra stops to play with. I now leave the IS on all the time as it's battery draw seems vary small.Yes the 'L'series has a wider aperture, has internal focusing, sealed against dust, has less CA in the corners - but it is MANY times the price.Read full review...

I have given this lens a 5 star rating for value for money. It can take excellent photographs and if you critically test this lens against digital compact cameras, it wins hands down.An ideal lens to get anyone started, or 95% of anyone else for that matter. The focus is really fast with the Ultrasonic motor and it is very light weight. It is not a professional lens by any means, but then it does not cost £400 which is the lowest you will have to spend if you have specialist needs in this zoom range. Most zooms are better in the middle of the range and this lens is very good here.I have used this lens to A4 size prints and have had several comments that "They are the best photos I have ever seen" so there you are.The downside is that handling is difficult as the lens is so 'free'that a gust of wind can blow it off focus in manuall focus mode. Also using a polaroid filter, which is esential for high quality landscapes and holidays, is difficult due to the rotation of the lens when focussing.Summary: - Excellent value for money that will cover 95% of anyones needs. If you want to significantly improve on this lens you need to spend between £350 to £700Read full review...

I needed a general purpose lens, capable of Landscape and general imaging.Price was a constraint. I noted Canon make a number of lens's which are well outside my price range, and examined a number of reviews on the internet.I decided to take a chance on the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens. It was not without some critical reviews on the web, but I believe Canon optics to be very capable of holding there own. I also believe a good photograph is the result of a partnership between the Photographer and the constraints of his equipment. As a General purpose lens, this one does well on most requirements. Images are Pin-sharp, typical of Canons modern lens's.I would be happy to recommend this optic as part of a collection of other lens's. It cant do everything, but that said, its very useable in the areas I require it to be.I am not a huge fan of the plastic casings offered by Canon on lens's in this price range, but the mechanics of it are up to the mark and the optics are very good. It wont make a bad Photographer a better one, but if you use this lens as a reliable and capable general purpose lens, it does what it says on the tin.RecommendedRead full review...

The EF-S 18-55mm USM is the standard kit lens with the EOS 400D. With cropped sensor digital cameras (EOS 400D, 350D, 40D and 30D) this translates into a 35mm equivalent of 29-88mm. This range of focal lengths makes the lens ideal for portraits, architectural shots and, to a lesser extent, landscape photography. On the positive side, image quality is excellent particularly between 25-45mm and f5.6-f11.0. As with most Canon USM lenses, auto focus is rapid, accurate and virtually silent. This lens scored 77% in a recent ‘What Digital Camera’ test, a score that compares very favourably with many more expensive lenses. The negatives really need to be to be seen in the context of this lens’ price point.Build quality is certainly not up to the standard of Canon’s L series (obviously) or their mid-range consumer lenses. The plastic mount and lack of ‘torque’ in the zoom betray the budget nature of the lens. However, the money has clearly been spent on the glass which, in my book, is what matters in a starter lens.As a versatile and very capable budget lens the EF-S 18-55mm takes some beating, I don’t think you’ll regret buying one!Read full review...

This lens just about the same size and weight as the older 18-55mm lens. The coating is different and gives holding the lens a better grip. The performance of this lens is far superior to the old lens, images are sharper and to me have more depth and colour. The IS system works very effectively to reduce camera shake and can also keep the IS going automatically if you are panning. I could not really get better than 3 stops advantage over a non-IS lens, not the Canon quoted 4 stops. This is not really noticeable in real life, so I would not define it as a minus point to the lens. Build quality is good for the price range even though it is a plastic build and mount, this is never going to be a pro lens and it is built to a price. It is however a very good investment if you want a cheap lens kit which covers a large range if you buy with the 55-250mm IS lens.Overall, top marks to Canon for an excellent lens. For picture quality verus price this lens will be a winner. Just make sure you take care of the original lens and not drop it like I did!Read full review...

This lens is very hard to criticise. Image quality is high, the range 18-55 is useful and IMO it's very good value for money. The mount is plastic but as I dedicate this lens to one camera body and a 55-250 STM to another, wear and tear of the lens mount is not an issue. It's weight is low - only 205gms as is the 55-250 (375gms) and when these lenses plus entry level bodies are used in combination the image quality is superior to using a single superzoom of 18-250 range. The non rotating front lens element is a major convenience improvement over it's non - STM predecessor - enabling polariser filters to be used without the risk of rotating during focussing.I've discovered on review sites that at 55mm the lens is sharper than the earlier lenses - I've yet to test this - but results so far seem to suggest all is well. The manual focussing ring is a little too loose but seems to work fine. Unable to comment on durability - but if it turns out to be as good as the 8 year old 18-55mm IS lens it is replacing then I shall be well pleased.Read full review...

I have a non IS version of this lens and was quite happy with the results, and if careful it will give good results on general pictures. I was a little disappointed with landscapes and tend to use my nifty 50 (50mm F1.8).I have just got the IS version and although I have not done any landscapes yet the other pictures I have taken are very sharp and have no shake at all.I did a little test and took a picture of a clock at max zoom both with IS and the IS turned off without flash and the difference is very marked. I held my camera as steady as I could with the IS off and took the picture f5.6 at 1/6 sec the result was not my best. Then I took the same picture with the IS on and what a difference really quite sharp and took no effort at holding the shot. All in all for the price this is a lens worth getting the IS makes all the difference. I was a little reluctant to get the IS considering it to be for woose,s who can,t hold a camera steady but I am sold on them now well worth the money.Read full review...

Anyone thinking of buying this lens don’t hesitate go for it. It will be a very handy addition to your kit; I use it on my Canon EOS 30D. Although it is classed as an amateur lens its performance and results are excellent. One of the key points, and what we all want from a lens is clear sharp results. Another benefit of the lens is its weight, or rather lack of it, nice and light.I’ve tried the lens on a live shoot with great results. The IS (Image Stabiliser) really does work. As for price it is a bargain, compared to its big brother the Canon 17-55 IS 2.8 Hundreds of ££££££s less.It will be a great filler lens, until I can afford the semi pro version.Negatives. None really. Plastic body?Maybe, but can’t complain for the price.Overall Great little lens, with a good wide-angle zoom range, that produces nice clear sharp images, at a very affordable price.Read full review...

For the price of the lens it is very good. Very light, but therefore potentially not very durable all plastic construction including mount I have found the IS feature makes about two focal stops difference which can be useful.Good as a kit lens or an starter lens if like me you have tranfered from film SLR to Digital recentely and need the wide angle equivalent of your older full frame lenses. It is the equivalent of a 29 mm the next canon lens available with a wide range is alot more expensive.I have found that the smaller front lens aperature doesn't let as much light in as my older 28-200mm sigma lens which had a 72mm filter ring. The 18-55mm only has a 58mm filter ring, but this is a very common filter ring size for canon and so the upside is that filters are much cheaper. Will give more detail after a full test this weekend.MatthewRead full review...

It the kit lens and it really does perform really well, simply a great lens extremely versatile good build some people have said it feel a little cheap or plastic do not listen to them this is the lens I use to film and shoot commercial video tours and you can hammer nails with it all day and it works. One of the best things about this lens is that it works really well with a wide angle digital king pro 0.7x and to get a propose built lens that can do the same will cost you silly money. I broke my last lens(massive impact)and had to use my more expensive lenses it was a nightmare shoot, I could not get this lens off ebay fast enough.Simply great lens and cheap enough to replace to you can take more risks out in the field, the low cost does NOT reflect the excellent quality of this brilliantly priced lens.Read full review...

A good basic starter lens thats suited to most short range / Panoramic / Wide angle / Portrait situations. Light & easy to carry around all day. Despite what a lot of the professional reviews say the average amateur photographer will be more than happy with the results produced by efs range of Canon lenses.Budget lenses are quite simply an affordable solution for the average photographer starting off or on a tight budget. It should be remembered that as you go up the range you're looking at between £350 & £550 for intermediate lens solutions, then when you get to the L end of the spectrum your looking at £1000'sThe Efs range should see most beginners through their first year or two when they can decide whether to upgrade or not.I suspect most would be happy to keep what they've got.Read full review...

Much better than the non-IS kit lens, but strong barrel distortions at 18mm and high vignetting at 18mm at f/3.5. Flimsy construction. The review which prompted me to buy this lens over the non-IS version stated: "There were a few moments when I considered not to publish the results due to 'political correctness' because to date it was a quite absurd thought that such a cheap, or better 'affordable', lens can perform this good and I'm sure that some will not believe the findings even though they're supported by the published field images. Anyway, the resolution capabilities of the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is nothing short of amazing. This is also surprising regarding the rather small changes in the optical design compared to the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II."

Canon speaks for itself in terms of quality and reliability. The 18-55 could almost be described as an all-purpose lense. Great for wide-angle outdoor shots, and quick enough for in-door evening shots. There is a quicker version of this lens but speed comes at a premium cost.It is no suprise that Canon package this lens with the lower-end digital SLR camera, as it makes an excellent starter lens. The pictures are crisp with no 'noise', and although more expensive than the Sigma equivalent, I feel the extra cost is well worth it.I will be shooting a friend's wedding soon and decided to purchase this lens because of it's durability and flexibility when taking group photos.I do not feel thatanyone would be disapointed with this lens.

I have had different Canon SLR cameras over many years, including the old film SLRs and then changing to digital. They have always been superbe cameras to work with and in my opinion their lenses are among the best that I have ever used. I now use a modest 450 on my many European travels but I spoilt my standard 18-55 lens while doing a photo shoot at Nice. I quickly bought a s/h lens on e.bay from a brilliant seller and didn't realise how much I had missed my little Canon 450 and it's simple to use 18=50 lens...so portable but much greater and more efficient than it's size would suggest. So thankyou Canon for a brilliant little camera...and lens unit, and thankyou to that super efficient seller !!Jean-Paul Antoine...Guitarman.
